The most impressive spectacle film of the summer hasn’t cost hundreds of millions of dollars nor has it employed state-of-the-art CGI to invent bizarre new worlds and fantastical creatures. It’s Sara Dosa’s documentary “Fire of Love,” an overwhelming visceral experience culled together from live and breathtaking footage filmed at active volcanos by daredevil volcanologists who tragically died decades ago.
“Fire of Love” tells the story of Katia and Maurice Krafft, who fell in love over their shared love of volcanoes and dedicated their entire lives to getting up close and personal with magma flows, acid lakes and other natural phenomena that boggle and terrify the mind — and the body doesn’t much care for them either; you can literally see the flesh peeling off of Maurice’s leg after he idly stands in boiling mud.

The Writers Guild of America East is accusing NBC News of union-busting.
The organization has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board accusing NBCUniversal of undermining the union that was in place at the now shut-down Peacock Productions, an in-house non-fiction production unit. Wgae wants the collective bargaining agreement that applied to Peacock Productions to remain in place at a new production operation NBC News unveiled earlier this year.
“This cynical maneuver is intended to bust the union, to continue the company’s years-long effort to reject its employees’ decision to be part of the Wgae and to bargaining collectively on critical workplace issues,” said Lowell Peterson, executive director of WGA East, in a prepared statement. “Freelance employees creating nonfiction programs must be covered by the Wgae collective bargaining agreement, which was the product of years of struggle by freelance writer-producers and which protects their interests and reflects...

“The Rookie” is on the rise. The Nathan Fillion ABC drama grew its Nielsen TV rating last night, benefitting again from its “American Idol” lead-in.
Led by “60 Minutes,” CBS had the most overall audience members on Sunday, but ABC controlled the key demo. NBC again ended up in a tie with Telemundo among adults ages 18-49. Both NBC and Telemundo are owned by NBCUniversal, which is under the Comcast umbrella.
ABC was first in ratings with a 1.1 rating/6 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in total viewers with an average of 6.1 million, according to preliminary numbers. Following a rerun, “American Idol” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. put up a 1.3/7 and 7.2 million viewers. At 10, “The Rookie” received a 0.8/4 and 5.1 million viewers.

Goodbye, Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), hello ratings boost. Thursday’s “Grey’s Anatomy” grew 18% in TV ratings as the show revealed the fan-favorite’s fate.
The sendoff saw “Grey’s” add 300,000 overall audience members from last week’s hour, which was part of another crossover with “Station 19.”
ABC was first in ratings with a 1.0 rating/5 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in total viewers with an average of 5.4 million, according to preliminary numbers. “Station 19” at 8 p.m. posted a 1.0 and 6.1 million viewers. “Grey’s Anatomy” at 9 landed a 1.3 and 6.3 million viewers. At 10, “A Million Little Things” had a 0.6 and 3.7 million viewers.

Tragedy averted, but not without a casualty. Nik Wallenda successfully traversed the 1,800-foot-long tightrope stretched across the Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua, but ABC was the one hurting Wednesday night. In its 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. time slot, “Volcano Live With Nik Wallenda” ranked last among the Big 4 broadcast networks — CBS, NBC, Fox and ABC — in all 10 of the demos that anyone really cares about, according to Nielsen’s Live + Same Day official-national ratings. Those 10 demos include: adults (0.4 rating), men (0.4) and women 18-34 (0.5); adults (0.7), men (0.6) and women 18-49 (0.8); adults (1.0), men (0.9) and women 25-54 (1.1); and total viewers (4.2 million). As you can tell, women of all ages were more drawn to the stunt than men. Things heated up Wednesday with ABC’s special Volcano Live! with Nik Wallenda, but compared with Wallenda’s walk last year above Times Square, the daredevil’s high-wire act over the active Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua had less sizzle. Last night’s two-hour broadcast was down a tenth in the ratings from the earlier special, earning a 0.7 in the adults 18-49 demographic and netting 4.17 million viewers. The walk led to the steady return of Stumptown.
On Fox, The Masked Singer saw a one-tenth boost from last week and topped the night ratings-wise, unveiling the person behind the singing Taco. The Masked Singer led into Lego Masters, which held steady from last week. The pair helped the network finish No. 1 in the demo overall.
NBC’s Chicago trio was down across the board after last week’s crossover event but still gave NBC the crown as the night’s most watched network.

It was a down night for some and a steady night for others.
Over on NBC, Chicago Med slipped two-tenths to a season low tying 1.0 rating.
The veteran series delivered 8.3 million total viewers, but it easily led the night in that metric.
Chicago Fire was also on the down side, losing a tenth week-to-week, coming down to 8.2 million viewers and a 1.1 rating.
Chicago P.D. slipped from last week's crossover to 7.1 million viewers and a 1.0 rating.
However, these numbers are on par with the show's non-crossover average.
#OneChicago remains a viable option for NBC, and all three shows have been renewed until 2023.
Fox's The Masked Singer bounced back from last week's season low, garnering 6.7 million viewers and and a 1.8 rating.
It may not be as strong as it once was, but it was the loudest show in the demo on Wednesday night.
Lego Masters followed with a steady 3 million viewers and a 1.0 rating.

Daredevil Nik Wallenda took on the active Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua this evening in an ABC special, Volcano Live! As the title suggests, the highwire walker attempted an 1,800-foot walk over the active volcano. Wallenda is part of the seventh generation of the wire-walking family, whose outrageous stunts have brought fame and tragedy to the family. This latest feat marked Nik’s longest and highest highwire walk ever attempted, as he tried to become the first person to walk across the volcano. But in the course of the task, some viewers were left angry by a certain feature of the stunt. *** Spoiler Alert: Do Not Read Further If You Have Not Yet Seen The Show ***

Wallenda successfully completed ABC’s “Volcano Live!” walk on Wednesday night, with the 1,800-foot-long journey on a one-inch cable clocking in at 31 minutes, 21 seconds. The pace was a hair slower than the 25-30 minutes he predicted during our discussion.

NBC News plans to shutter its non-fiction unit Peacock Productions, which has created series, documentaries and specials for broadcast and cable outlets since its launch in 2007.
The unit created projects such as The Disappearance of Crystal Rogers for Oxygen and a Discovery Channel special about Nik Wallenda’s high-wire crossing of Little River Gorge.
An NBC News spokesperson said that the production unit will be closed effective on March 2.
“NBC News is shifting its documentary strategy to an entirely new model, consistent with industry trends, and unfortunately the existing operation is no longer viable,” the spokesperson said. “We are working with affected employees to help find positions around NBCUniversal.”
The documentary business has shifted significantly since the unit was launched, particularly with the rise of streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. A source said that 32 employees will be affected, between Peacock Productions and MSNBC’s longform unit, as well as a group of freelancers.

ABC is doubling down on its commitment to live, tentpole television.
The aim, said ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke at the Television Critics Assn. winter press tour on Wednesday, is for the network to present at least one live or big tentpole event every month. That includes the Oscars next month, a live episode of “The Conners,” “Highwire Live with Nik Wallenda,” the NFL draft, and a new installation of “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” in successive months.
“We love the strategy we’ve adopted now of at least one monthly tentpole event,” said Burke, adding that the network is considering continuing to event-ize its existing franchises and properties. “It’s a combination of looking for new properties that feel like they can thrive on broadcast… [and taking] programs that already exist and event-izing those.”
She also confirmed that the Oscars will again be host-less this year.

ABC’s mini-golf competition “Holey Moley” reached 10 million multi-platform viewers in the three days following its debut last week, the network said Wednesday.
The number builds on the 4.8 million same-day viewers who tuned into the episode the night of the reality competition show’s debut, and factors in a rerun of the episode on Sunday after the Nik Wallenda stunt show “Highwire Live.”
The rollout of “Holey Moley” has largely been a success for ABC, with the debut ranking as one of the most-watched new series premieres of the summer season. The network’s reboots of the classic gameshows “Press Your Luck” and “Card Sharks” have similarly performed well.

ABC easily won Sunday night — all without a net! Highwire Live in Times Square with Nik Wallenda had audiences sitting at the edge of their seat as they watched circus troupe members Nik Wallenda and Lijana Wallenda walk the highwire 25 stories above street level across New York City’s Time Square. Highwire Live in Times Square With Nik Wallenda averaged 5.3 million total viewers and a 0.8 demo rating across its two-hour run, easily leading the night in both measures and leading ABC to an easy Sunday win. (Read recap.)
The handiest comparison I have is that Nik Wallenda’s June 2013 Grand Canyon walk averaged 8.5 million total viewers on a Sunday evening for Discovery.
Over on CBS, The Good Fight Episodes 3 and 4 (3.7 mil/0.3, 3.6 mil/0.3) matched last week’s double pump of broadcast-tv encores.
Elsewhere, The CW’s Burden of Truth (471K/0.1) was steady week-to-week…. Among NBC’s trifecta of reruns, America’s Got Talent placed No.

As part of a push for more live event programming, ABC on Sunday night hosted the latest bit of highwire daredevilry by Nik Wallenda, joined by his sister Lijana, who traversed opposite directions along a 1,300 foot-long tightrope raised 25 stories above Times Square.
Adding to the innate tension of the unprecedented proceedings — besides the fact that Nik would need to step over his crouched sister, and swap harness clips, as they met up midway — was the fact that Nik’s troupe had experienced quite a scare two years ago. In February 2017, all eight of them fell from a highwire while practicing a human pyramid act.

Cakewalk: Nik Wallenda and his sister Lijana successfully traversed a 1,300-foot tightrope walk Sunday night — 25 stories above New York City’s Times Square — for ABC’s “Highwire Live in Times Square With Nik Wallenda.”
Their shared cable was just 3/4” thick, or about the size of a quarter. Nik and Lijana, who wore safety harnesses, crossed each other in the middle. He stepped over her, making for a (particularly) tense moment — especially considering Nik had to temporarily unhook Lijana’s harness for the bypass.
Nik and Lijana were both mic’d up and able to communicate with each other the whole time. Lijana, who started and finished later than Nik, did a bit of singing to pass the time — and presumably to calm the nerves.

Famous tightrope walker Nik Wallenda admits he's nervous for his upcoming stunt above Times Square ... but the nerves are reserved for his sister's welfare, as she joins him for the first time since her near-fatal accident. The daredevil came on "TMZ Live" Friday ahead of Sunday's tightrope walk, 25 stories above the bustling streets of the Big Apple ... and Nik told us why his biggest concern for the never-before-attempted stunt is focusing too much on Lijana's comeback attempt.

Nik Wallenda doesn’t want to die during ABC special “Highwire Live,” but that’s not actually why he is okay with wearing a harness — this time.
On Sunday, Wallenda and his sister Lijana will walk a 1,300 foot-long tightrope, 25-stories atop New York City’s Times Square. They’ll meet around the middle and pass each other going in opposite directions.
The wire is just 3/4” in diameter, about the size of a quarter. If all goes well, they’ll both be safely on a solid surface in about “20-30 minutes,” he said.

For this stunt, Nik and Lijana Wallenda will both be wearing safety harnesses, something Nik normally detests. He famously became very frustrated by having to wear a harness for his 2012 highwire walk over Niagara Falls, which also aired on ABC. The...

Michael Strahan, ABC’s Good Morning America co-anchor and host of The $100,000 Pyramid, will host Highwire Live in Times Square with Nik Wallenda, along with co-host Erin Andrews.
The duo will be live from New York’s Times Square as Nik Wallenda and his sister, Lijana, seventh-generation members of the Wallenda family circus troupe, return to the highwire for a never-before-attempted walk of approximately 1,300 feet long and 25 stories above street level.
Highwire Live in Times Square with Nik Wallenda will air as a live two-hour televised event on Sunday, June 23 (8-10 Pm Et). The walk marks Lijana Wallenda’s first highwire walk since the 2017 accident where she, along with four others, tragically fell 30 feet off a tightrope during a rehearsal.
“So many factors are involved in an event of this magnitude, but it will all come down to the moment when Nik and Lijana step onto the highwire and we’re covering every second live,...

Nik Wallenda and his sister, Lijana, seventh-generation members of the Wallenda family highwire act, will attempt a walk of approximately 1,300 feet long and 25 stories above street level across New York City’s iconic Times Square.
The daredevil stunt will take place on Sunday, June 23 and be televised live by ABC as Highwire Live in Times Square with Nik Wallenda as a two-hour event. The walk marks Lijana Wallenda’s first highwire stunt since a 2017 accident where she, along with four others, fell 30 feet off a tightrope during a rehearsal.
Nik Wallenda has done several of these televised stunts, including walking blindfolded between two skyscraper towers in Chicago in 2014 and a 2013 walk across the Colorado River Gorge. He was also the first person to walk across Niagara Falls in 2012.
The Wallendas don’t always make it. In 2017, five members of the troupe were involved in an accident while working without a net as an eight-person pyramid.

ABC will work without a net — literally — with a live special on the heels of the NBA Finals.
The network will air a live special on June 23 featuring high-wire walker Nik Wallenda and his sister, Lijana. The special, Highwire Live in Times Square, will have brother and sister attempting to cross Times Square simultaneously from 25 stories up. The two-hour special is set to air June 23, a week after a potential Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
