With more than 80 million records sold worldwide, Shakira is the best-selling female Latin artist ever. She’s been nominated for six Grammys and has won 11 Latin Grammys, giving her a Guinness World Record. By nearly all accounts, she’s one of the biggest stars on the planet. But within her decades-long career, there’s one album that set her up for massive global fame and in many ways, predicted it all: 1998’s Dónde Están los Ladrones?
Dónde Están los Ladrones? is an eclectic pop album with a rock edge that broke Shakira into the U.

Elvis Costello doesn’t speak Spanish, but on at least one occasion, he’s dreamt in it.
Back in 2018, the television writer David Simon had reached out to him about transforming “This Year’s Girl,” the prickling cut from his pivotal 1978 LP This Year’s Model, into a duet for the second season of The Deuce. The thought of reworking a classic might have unnerved a less adventurous artist, but Costello, ever the shapeshifter, was intrigued. He and his frequent collaborator, the Grammy-winning Argentinean producer Sebastian Krys, dug into the...

It’s been nearly five months since a wave of austerity measures, proposed by Chilean President Sebastián Piñera, sent Chile spiraling into civil unrest. Outside the grounds of the 60th annual Viña del Mar International Song Festival on Monday night — the longest-running music festival in Latin America — up to 800 protesters demanded justice for human rights violations committed by Chilean police and military during the 2019 protests — including but not limited to murder, rape, and torture.

Eat your heart out, Sara Bareilles: Francisca Valenzuela has released a Spanish-language ballad fit for Broadway, titled “Flotando.” It is the latest single from her upcoming fourth LP, and her first in five years, La Fortaleza.
In “Flotando,” which means “Floating,” Valenzuela sings ecstatically of finding, at long last, a higher love. Filmed inside a vacant theater, the video follows a besotted singer-songwriter as she drops in and out of reality. In one frame, she’s flanked by make-up artists; and in the next, she’s cuddling her dream lover atop a grand piano.

Written by the legendary Chilean folk singer Víctor Jara, the 1971 song, “El Derecho de Vivir en Paz,” or “The Right to Live in Peace,” was originally dedicated to Vietnamese communist leader Ho Chi Minh, as the United States waged war in Vietnam. By 1973, Chile, too, would be at war; following a military coup that overthrew socialist president Salvador Allende, General Augusto Pinochet would assume power until 1990. By Pinochet’s orders, Jara was held prisoner in a football stadium, where along with thousands of other civilians, he was tortured and murdered by soldiers.

Francisca Valenzuela is not just a singer-songwriter; she is her own producer, a published poet, and founder of the feminist music collective and festival, Ruidosa. But now, with the release of her steely new track, “Héroe,” she is Joan of Arc, Wonder Woman, and Xena Warrior Princess — all rolled into one.
“I’m going straight for the fire,” she sings, “The moment has come/I will be my hero.”
A shape-shifting union between synth-pop and reggaeton, “Héroe” is the lead single off her upcoming fourth LP, La Fortaleza. Out this fall via Sony Latin,...

Ximena Sariñana is out of touch. She’s not making Pepsi commercials for international markets, nor is she stoking political debates via Instagram. She’s not making a trendy sound like “Chicano Soul” — in fact, she doesn’t even know what that is. She’s not a Grammy darling, nor someone who rakes in many Pazz & Jop votes among music critics.
That’s not to call her irrelevant, though. Sariñana’s been in the public eye since she was nine years old, when she was cast in a small role in Hasta Morir,...

Chilean-American indie-pop star Francisca Valenzuela teams up with L.A.-based producer Alexmaax, A.K.A. Max Hershenow of electronic duo Ms Mr, in the spellbinding new dance track, “0y1.” This marks Hershenow’s debut under his new solo moniker.
An umbral reflection on digital love, “0y1” is the first of several songs that Valenzuela and Hershenow produced during their three years of friendship between Chile and the United States. Valenzuela’s nimble voice glides over a pulsating house beat, softened by a delicate skip and shuffle of garage. The...

The Chilean-American singer, songwriter and activist Francisca Valenzuela has released a sumptuous new video for her latest single, “Ya No Se Trata de Ti” — or in English, “It’s No Longer About You.” The track is the second release off her forthcoming untitled album, due in 2019.
Both fizzy and tastefully salacious, Valenzuela’s previous single “Tómame” is a bubblegum pop paean to sexual liberty — a declaration of independence on behalf of her body. Yet in the new, more downtempo “Ya No Se Trata de Ti,” Valenzuela seeks the same kind of freedom for her heart.
