More than 250 artists, including Billie Eilish, Green Day, Sia and Cyndi Lauper, signed a letter Thursday urging the Senate Commerce Committee to support a bill that would reform the ticketing system for live events.
The Fans First Act, which was initially introduced in December by Sens. John Cornyn, Amy Klobuchar, Marsha Blackburn, Peter Welch, Roger Wicker and Ben Ray Lujan, aims to address flaws in the current live event ticketing system. The bill hopes to increase transparency in ticket sales, protect consumers from fake or overpriced tickets, and hold those who engage in illegal ticket sale practices accountable.
“As artists and members of the music community, we rely on touring for our livelihood, and we value music fans above all else,” the letter said in part. “We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate...

Diplo has written and produced hits for everyone from Beyoncé to Justin Bieber, Madonna to Britney Spears. That’s in addition to releasing chart-topping music under his own name and through an ever-growing list of collaborative projects with names like Major Lazer, Jack Ü, Silk City and LSD.
But for his next sonic adventure, Diplo, 44, dons a stetson and returns to the rustic landscape of his 2020 release, Diplo Presents Thomas Wesley, Chapter 1: Snake Oil. The sequel, Diplo Presents Thomas Wesley: Chapter 2 — Swamp Savant (out April 28 on Columbia), sees the superstar DJ once more adopt his western persona Thomas Wesley and team up with some of the biggest names in country and hip-hop for a new brand of Americana.
The first single, “Wasted,” features Kodak Black and Zoe Wetzel. The second, “Use Me (Brutal Hearts),” lured Sturgill Simpson (singing as “Johnny Blue Skies”) out of hiding after a five-year absence.

One of the newest additions to Warner Music Group’s roster of artists — taking a spot alongside names like Ed Sheeran, Madonna, Coldplay and Camilla Cabello — is a bundle of code. It’s under contract to release 20 albums this year.
The creator of the algorithm is sound startup Endel, which uses artificial intelligence to make personalized audio tracks aimed at boosting people’s mood or productivity. Endel launched a little over a year ago in Europe, then became one of the up-and-coming companies chosen for Techstars Music’s startup accelerator program in 2018. Two months ago,...

Dancehall king Sean Paul and reggaeton royal J Balvin released visuals for their latest track, “Contra La Pared,” which means “Against the Wall.” The duo had previously joined forces on the 2017 Major Lazer song “Buscando Huellas.”
In the Tainy-produced reggaeton-hall track, Balvin calls to mind an old Spanish nursery rhyme in the chorus, in which he tells a demanding lover that she has his back against the wall: “Cúcara, mácara, dique fue,” he sings, “Ya me tiene’ contra la pared.” Between playful verses in Patois, Paul sings the chorus in Spanish as well,...

Funk icon Chaka Khan belted her recent single “Like Sugar” on Wednesday’s Ellen.
The singer recruited a quartet of breakdancers for the track — a fitting touch for a song about a “funky, funky groove.” “It’s like sugar, so sweet/Good enough to eat,” she sang over a thick bassline and dense rhythm track. “When I feel the funk, I give in/Get up on yo feet.”
“Like Sugar” appears on Chaka Khan’s recently issued 12th LP, Hello Happiness, her first album since 2007’s Funk This. Producer Switch,...

We have the first trailer for Max Minghella’s debut as a writer-director, Teen Spirit, and I am here for it. I mean, I have questions, for sure. Like, why is the marketing push so heavily focussed on the fact that Elle Fanning will be singing covers of very mainstream pop hits? Is that a thing the world has been clamoring for? And if this is a spin on Cinderella, does that make Rebecca Hall the fairy godmother? Also, I have this (probably totally misbegotten) idea that debut films from writer-directors are intensely personal, so why is Minghella’s first film a retelling of Cinderella in which Elle Fanning sings a lot of covers of mainstream pop hits? I would like to sit down and talk to him about that for seven to twelve hours.
All of that aside, from the trailer this looks like pretty much my platonic ideal of a film,...

Marshmello. Skrillex. Dillon Francis. DJ Diesel?! The 7-foot-1 Hall of Famer could be the next big (literally) DJ in the music industry ... so says Diplo, who tells TMZ Sports, Shaquille O'Neal has what it takes to be a legit force in Edm. "He's great, Shaq Diesel, man. He's killin' it right now. Very heavy music," Diplo says. The Major Lazer contributor says he's been working with the NBA legend on a few "great records" ... and...

It’s been nearly a year since Diplo released his last Ep, California, but that’s not to say the super-producer hasn’t kept himself busy. He started co-hosting the SiriusXM radio show “Diplo’s Revolution” with fellow DJ Dillon Francis and Major Lazer bandmates Jillionaire and Walshy Fire. He also toured Africa (with Major Lazer), collaborating with local musicians along the way for a mixtape that incorporated Afropop and dance music.

Sundance is mostly known for movie premiers and film deals, but among the sea of actors, industry folk and free booze (not necessarily in that order), Robert Redford’s legendary festival also dances into the wee hours of the night thanks to the wealth of music options available.
Here are 10 performances that caught our eye — and ear — at the 2019 edition of Sundance.
1. Kathryn Gallagher: A star of Netflix’s “You” and the forthcoming “Jagged Little Pill Musical,” Gallagher performed at the Montage on the opening night of Sundance with a set of moody sad songs that culminated in a jam with Parkland High school shooting survivors. To think that humanity and harmony could come together in a room full of ski parkas and snow boots was one of those truly meaningful moment at Sundance.

Was Fyre Festival, in all of its disastrous non-glory, the millennial Woodstock? Sort of!
In the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, Brittany Spanos, David Browne and Andy Greene join host Brian Hiatt to break down the utter mess that was Fyre, as chronicled in documentaries on both Hulu and Netflix. It was, in theory, a music festival — with Blink-182 and Major Lazer, among others, booked to perform — but no one involved, from the organizers to the attendees, seemed to care very much about the actual performances.

In 2017, director Chris Smith was wrapping up Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond, his documentary on Jim Carrey’s transformation into Andy Kaufman for Man on the Moon, when he added a simple line to “a bunch of half-baked ideas” he had written down: Fyre Festival. Organizers of the inaugural luxurious music festival, set to take place over two weekends in the Bahamas in 2017, promised attendees exquisite villas, hangs with supermodels and a lineup featuring Blink-182, Major Lazer, G.O.O.D. Music and Disclosure, among many high-profile acts.

Mø dropped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform her Forever Neverland track “Blur.” The Danish pop star’s tour begins tonight. Mø and her band performed “Blur” in front of a large moon that was backlit by a red light. It matched the song’s opening lyrics: “Under the bad, bad moon tonight/Baby you should trust me.” From there, she danced and belted in front of the moon orb for an alluringly menacing performance.

Elle Fanning enters a singing competition and battles for the chance at pop career in the new trailer for Teen Spirit.

The music business is finishing 2018 with a spring in its step. Thanks to the growth of streaming services such as Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Music, the record industry has witnessed another 12 months of prosperity — suggesting that its post-Napster-era recovery is sustainable (for the time being, at least).
Meanwhile, the live-music industry has soared to record revenues once again, proving that, even in an era awash with people glued to Fortnite, Instagram and Netflix, the power of songs and artistry remains something Joe Public will shell out for.
