Let's Talk About Bombastic Bag Man, The Deepest Cut In The Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Trailer
Just about a year after the first look teaser dropped, Sony has finally released a proper trailer for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse." As expected, the latest preview for the highly-anticipated follow-up to the 2018 sensation "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" features a ton of Spideys that are sure to be recognizable to many True Believers out there. But out of the numerous spider-themed heroes both highlighted and hiding in the background, one, in particular, stood out each time he appeared onscreen. Of course, we're talking about the Bombastic Bag-Man!
Though his suit is slightly different that the version we're used to from the pages of Marvel Comics, it's impossible to mistake this incarnation of the friendly neighborhood web-slinger. I mean, it's hard to miss Spider-Man wearing a paper bag over his head. However, despite the fact that this version of the fan-favorite character is often played for laughs, Peter Parker's Bag-Man Spidersona...

Well, the newest look at "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" certainly has some very interesting footage for fans to dissect. Seriously, those shots of all the Spidersonas together in what appears to be some sort of middle ground between multiverses look incredible, and we are certain that the actual animation to bring these characters to life will be stunning.
This multiverse middle ground doesn't just have the potential to look cool. "Into the Spider-Verse" proved that it was possible to travel between dimensions, with a couple of previously-obscure characters ushering in this important, multi-franchise-spanning plot point. With the waters now properly tested, it looks like "Across the Spider-Verse" will be taking advantage of all the creative opportunities involved in a multiverse concept, including just how many crazy characters can get their big-screen debut.
We have already known some of the "new" Spidersonas that will be appearing in the film -- Jessica Drew,...

For the uninitiated, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) is a skilled marksman and an ex-villain turned Avenger; his ally is Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a rich girl-turned-superhero. But that doesn’t even graze the surface of their backstory. It’s been a long time since there’s been any movement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, we haven’t had any new McU stuff in a year and half. But now WandaVision’s launch looms, and we just got our first look at the “Loki” series that’s coming to Disney+ next year.
“Loki” will follow the title character, played once again by Tom Hiddleston, from when he escaped the clutches of the Avengers with the Tesseract during the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” As we expected after we saw that movie, Loki will use the Space Stone to explore this new alternate timeline that has been created thanks to the Avengers’ time travel shenanigans.
But beyond that, we don’t know much. And at first watch the trailer doesn’t seem to give us much in the way of new information. The trailer is...

We all know Batman’s origin story. When his parents were gunned down by a mugger, Bruce Wayne dedicated his life to becoming a superhero so he could prevent tragedies like this one from happening again. But imagine if there had been a superhero around that alley that night who was able to save Bruce’s parents. He’d never have become Batman, right? Well, that’s actually what happened in, of all places, a Spider-Man comic.
In 1996’s The Amazing Spider-Man #411, from writer Tom DeFalco and penciller Mark Bagley, Ben Reilly’s Spider-Man – yes, this was part of the Clone Saga – is able to intervene when he witnesses a mugging taking place. The mugger puts a frightened family – consisting of a mother, father and son – at gunpoint to get at the woman’s pearl necklace. Thankfully, Reilly is able to web up the thief’s hands and sock him...

If you went to refill your Diet Coke early in “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” you may have missed the long-awaited cinematic debut of Alison Blaire, aka Dazzler — one of the most kicked-around characters in the X-Men universe of outcasts.
Almost from the beginning, Marvel had big-screen ambitions for Dazzler. But like so many cinematic dreams, Dazzler’s have been repeatedly dashed, leading to makeshift makeovers, dark trips down industry side alleys, and coulda-been-a-contender moments in the makeup mirror. But Dazzler’s failure as a movie star — both in the comics and in real life — has fueled some of the most compelling-yet-forgotten Marvel stories of the 1980s.
I learned about Dazzler in 1985, at the age of 10, though a comic book purchased at a 7-Eleven in the San Fernando Valley. She was jarringly different than every other character, living on a neon edge between fame and Dirk Diggler’s life in the second half of “Boogie Knights.

Ever since Thanos showed up in the mid-credits of the first Avengers movie, there was one scenario that most comic book fans knew was going to one day happen: Captain America was going to at one point lift Thor’s hammer Mjolnir and bash Thanos’ stupid face with it. Until Hela broke Mjolnir in Thor: Ragnarok. Then we all went, “Oh, never mind, I guess,” and thought about what could have been.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was the best superhero film in a very long time, shaking up the increasingly repetitive superhero origin story with a barrage of psychedelic imagery, snappy dialogue and real heart. It’s gone on to be a box office success and an award winner, too, recently picking up a richly deserved Best Animated Feature Oscar.
Of course, with success like this comes opportunity, with Sony eager to capitalize on the film via several spinoffs. We’ve already heard confirmation of a sequel to the movie, as well as rumors about Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Man Noir films, but now we’re hearing from a trusted source that there’s going to be a fully fledged John Mulaney-voiced Spider-Ham TV show, too.
A clue as to what this might look like comes on the Spider-Verse home video release, which features the Spider-Ham mini-movie Caught in a Ham. The short...

There is much to celebrate about “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”: groundbreaking inclusion, a ’90s hip-hop soundtrack, Kathryn Hahn’s neurotic villain. But the arguable breakout star of the film is Peter Porker, aka Spider-Ham, voiced by John Mulaney.
The prolific comedy writer, stand-up, and rising animation star (see “Big Mouth”) charms as one of the more oddball Spider-folk to enter the storyline of lead Miles Morales. Porker is a crime-fighting pig whose day job is as photographer for his hometown paper, the Daily Beagle.
He’s also a throwback to the classic Warner Bros. cartoon character Porky Pig. He wafts through the air whenever a freshly baked pie is cooling and wields a wooden mallet to take on bad guys.
His unlikely popularity already has producers Amy Pascal and Avi Arad mulling over a possible standalone film. Variety caught up with Mulaney to get his pitch for that project.

Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham arrives in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Here's a look at the character's bizarre history.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stars not only beloved web-slinger Peter Parker, but various alternate-universe versions of the Spider-Man concept. Obviously, the protagonist is Miles Morales – originally Parker’s successor in the Ultimate Universe – but he’s joined by other wall-crawlers. All of them are widely different, such as a hard-boiled crime-fighter from the 1930s, a superhero alternative to Parker’s doomed girlfriend, a schoolgirl with an arachnid-based robot, and a cartoon pig.
Of Spider-Man’s heroic knockoffs, almost all of them come from the last decade. Spider-Man Noir first showed up in 2009, Miles in 2011, and both Spider-Gwen and Peni Parker in 2014. Spider-Ham, on the other hand, has been around for 35 years! Holy crap, has it really been that long?

Ah yes, a superhero story you can sink your teeth into. When Venom claws its way into theaters this weekend, it’ll mark the biggest moment yet for one of the most infamous villains that Marvel’s Spider-Man has ever faced. Tom Hardy is Eddie Brock, a down-on-his-luck journalist who fuses with a symbiotic alien entity to become the long-tongued, sharp-toothed, shape-shifting title character. Directed by Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer, the movie is set outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe of which Spidey himself is now a part, giving the character...

Further to his upcoming appearance in the animated feature "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse", check out the origins of "Peter Porker, The Spectacular Spider-Ham", a 'super-swine' debuting in Star Comics' one-shot "Marvel Tails" #1 (1983):
Created by Tom DeFalco and Mark Armstrong, the pig parody of Marvel Comics' "Spider-Man", debuted in "Marvel Tails", followed by the 17 issue series "Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham", written by Steve Skeates.

"After dousing her head with water and activating the dryer, May accidentally irradiated herself, and in a fit of delusion, bit Peter, who then found himself transformed into an anthropomorphic swine much like May Porker herself.

Once known primarily as the founding father of Spider-Man, Hulk, Doctor Strange, the Fantastic Four and so many other great Marvel characters, Stan Lee is now considered the undisputed king of cameos.
From Captain America: Civil War and The Defenders to this year’s Thor: Ragnarok, not a Marvel project goes by without some cute nod to the all-around industry legend – be it in the form of a well-placed poster or actual appearance. And you’ll be pleased to know that Stan Lee has already gone ahead and filmed cameos for five upcoming McU movies: Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled sequel, Avengers 4, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Black Panther, and the forthcoming Ragnarok, which is said to include Lee’s funniest stinger to date.
It makes sense, too, given all of those named projects are simmering in various stages of development. In fact, the only notable absentee is Captain Marvel,...

This review contains minor spoilers.
To say Justice League has been lukewarm over the past year would be the kind way of saying it hasn’t lived up to its usual standards. As sad as it is to admit, it’s a one hundred-percent accurate assessment. However, with all the recent changes in creative teams, one would hope that it’s the catalyst the series needs to get back on track. Does Justice League #23 deliver, though?
In this one-shot issue titled “Fear Itself,” Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern Jessica Cruz take on an extremist anti-terror group led by Black Shield. You can imagine how it could become a tale about how the League isn’t actually making the world safe from terrorism by stopping the military team. Yet, this isn’t the main focus here, as the storyline becomes all about Jessica and her dealing with fear. And this is where the issue derails itself.
For anyone who’s been reading Justice League for the past year, you’re undoubtedly aware of Jessica and how out of place she feels, constantly questioning her place on the team and being in awe of the other heroes. While it was endearing at first, it’s become annoying now. Surely, after 3 issues with the group, she shouldn’t be overwhelmed by the whole occasion every couple of pages, right? Frankly, it’s sloppy writing and editing by keeping her as the directionless puppy of the team. She’s a relative newbie, yes, but her reactions have become akin to the “oh my” in the Fifty Shades trilogy: overused and tedious. Where’s the character development?

Tom DeFalco’s story itself is okay. It’s not bad, but it’s far from sensational. As mentioned above, the premise of the anti-terrorist group could’ve led to an interesting angle and debate, but it became Jessica instead. Also, we’ve yet to see the Justice League take on a formidable opponent in Rebirth and the trend continues here with Black Shield and his goons. When you put together DC’s greatest heroes, you expect them to do battle against the mightiest villains – not some two-bit thugs. Sure, the threats and stakes remain high, but the antagonists aren’t convincing enough.
Tom Derenick takes hold of the pencils here, and I must admit that I’m left uninspired by his efforts. It’s reminiscent of the early stages of Rebirth where the artwork appears rushed, rough and unfinished. The characters’ faces change facial structure from panel to panel and the whole process looks sloppy from beginning to end. When you consider the quality of the artwork in Batman, Nightwing or Superman and then come to back to this, you can’t help but feel cheated.
Unfortunately, much like the rest of this series so far, Justice League #23 doesn’t do much to stand out from the pack. There’s a severe need for an injection of fresh creativity in this title as the stories continue to be bland. It’s a flagship book for DC, so we really expect much more from it. Quite frankly, this is simply not good enough.

Every college freshman learns about price elasticity in Economics 101. Price elasticity simply means that consumers will be more accepting of price changes for some products than for others. And as I’ve been watching the CW’s new Riverdale television series, I’m translating this economic concept to Geek Culture. Specifically, I’m mesmerized how some fans embrace changes to pop culture properties with a Geek Culture Elasticity and others just can’t embrace changes.
Long-time Archie fans – he is, after all, celebrating his 75th anniversary this year – are wrapping their heads around this latest television incarnation. The new Riverdale show is a steamy and creepy manifestation of beloved characters that ostensibly represent Americana. Unlike their traditional comic counterparts, these versions of the characters were driven by dark and base motivations that are a part of real people (albeit gorgeous and glamorous versions of real people).
I really liked the show.
