Sales agency Taskovski Films has picked up “The Landscape and the Fury,” directed by Nicole Vögele, which will have its world premiere in the international competition at Visions du Réel.
The documentary, produced by Aline Schmid of Beauvoir Films, was shot on the Bosnian-Croatian border, which is also the outer border for the European Union. The film unveils the struggle of refugees navigating this treacherous terrain, where mines from the Balkan War lurk in the soil and political borders define lives. The refugees are brutally chased across the border out of the EU into the darkness of the woods. In Ravnice, the villagers know of the fate that awaits these refugees; they were once in their shoes. They provide them with a moment of respite and safety in the old school building, far away from official camps and NGOs.
Taskovski previously worked with Schmid and Vögele on their film “Closing Time.

It’s been eight years since twin brother directing duo Ramon and Silvan Zürcher’s “The Strange Little Cat” caught the eye of audiences around the world, playing at major festivals in Turkey, India, Argentina, Portugal and beyond. The pair has finally returned, this time to Berlin, where their second feature of a trilogy on human togetherness, “The Girl and the Spider,” screens in the Encounters section.
Spread out across six small apartments and the micro-community which resides there, “The Girl and the Spider” turns primarily on Lisa, moving out, and her roommate Mara, left behind. As furniture is disassembled and reassembled, painting touched up and possessions divided, the future of several relationships hang in the balance as emotions swing to opposite extremes and loyalties are established and broken.

Before Telluride, before Venice, before Tiff, there is the last great festival of the summer season: the Locarno Film Festival, a singular Swiss event that typically features a strong mix of fest favorites from Sundance and Cannes, along with their own batch of returning favorites.
This year’s lineup is no exception, including films from Quentin Tarantino, Asif Kapadia, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, and rising stars Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe that have premiered elsewhere, along with new films from Valérie Donzelli, Fabrice Du Welz, and Boris Lojkine.
The 72nd edition of the festival marks the first for incoming artistic director Lili Hinstein, who has taken over from Carlo Chatrian, who served as artistic director of Locarno since 2013 and now returns to the Berlinale. Hinstin is the 13th artistic director of the Locarno Festival since it was founded in 1946 and is only the event’s second female chief.

The Sundance Institute rounded out the lineup for the 2019 Sundance Film Festival by unveiling its New Frontier section, which “spotlights work at the dynamic crossroads of film, art and technology.”
While the feature, short-film and indie episodic lineups tend to attract most of the press at Sundance, New Frontier consistently hosts the festival’s most dynamic and innovative work, spanning a wide range of interactive, emerging technology and installation-based projects that encompass Vr, Ar, mixed reality (Mr) and AI.
No section of the festival changes more from year to year than New Frontier, as reflected in the recent decision to expand to two venues — New Frontier at The Ray and the neighboring New Frontier Central, including a dedicated Vr Cinema — where the projects will be viewable during the duration of the festival, accompanied by panels and other special events.
