In naming Spotlight one of the best ensembles of 2016, we said, “Tom McCarthy’s procedural moves with the precision of a fine timepiece. Rarely does one find a film where all is tune, from the pacing, writing, direction and acting. Highlighting the heroic work of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, the group is headed by Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) who risks life long friendships to get the story right. His team includes Mike Rezendes (played by a compulsive Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Caroll (Brian d’Arcy James). Encouraged by a Boston outsider, editor Marty Baron (Live Schreiber), the team undertakes a long-term investigation of abuses in the Catholic Church. In the mix are the lawyers on both sides, played by Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup. Rightfully overshadowing that other journalism docudrama, James Vanderbilt’s incompetent Truth, the difference here amongst many things is perhaps access:...

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.
Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

If you've ever noticed a sexual tension between Downton Abbey characters Mary Crawley and Tom Branson, then it's just you.
Michelle Dockery has dismissed the chances of Mary ending up with her brother-in-law Tom by the end of the series, telling Digital Spy and others that any chemistry was purely accidental (but we're still hoping she's throwing us off the scent).
6 spoiler-free teasers for Downton Abbey's series 6 premiere
When asked if Tom and Mary might become an item, she said: "Absolutely not! We need to get rid of that rumour, he is very much her brother and always will be."
The actress also said that Mary will be focused on fixing herself rather than jumping into another relationship.
"With Mary it feels like this year she's struggling more with herself than relationships," she said.
"What I wanted was for the character to be content and happy in herself because...

The cast of Downton Abbey have kicked off filming for the final ever episode of the ITV drama that has taken the world by storm.
The sixth and final series of the period drama from Julian Fellowes will air in the autumn, so in the lead-up to our fond farewell to the Crawleys and the Granthams, here is a list of everything we know so far.
Downton Abbey: Why it had to end after its 6th series
When will the final episode air and be set?
There are no precise dates yet, but the final ever episode of Downton Abbey will be its Christmas special, so the likelihood is it will be broadcast on Christmas Day as with previous years.
The eight-part final series and its Christmas special will take place in 1925, the year of John Logie Baird's first TV with greyscale images and The Great Gatsby. The finale...

In a strange way, Sunday’s Downton Abbey finale brought Season 5 full circle, as the Crawleys’ annual Christmas vacation — this time to visit Rose’s hellish new in-laws at Brancaster Castle — nearly went down in flames. (Remember that? Honestly, Edith…)

I've never been so happy to see the back of a character on Downton, and there have been a lot of real duds on this show. Sybil aside, Branson has truly terrible taste in women.

Edith's crestfallen expression when Mary tells her says it all -- the illegal abortionist was probably the most exciting place Rosamund has ever taken her. Judging from how often word “reinvention” itself came up among the cast members. “There’s big social change in this season,” Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, told BuzzFeed. “You can tell by the clothes, it’s very, very modern. And Mary really embraces those changes. Reinvention is a good word.” That spirit of renewal is perhaps nowhere more apparent than within the character of Lady Mary herself. “It’s the new Mary,” she said. “Because she’s through...

Downton Abbey had a disappointing fourth season. While its 12 Emmy nominations—including one for Outstanding Drama Series and one for Michelle Dockery for Outstanding Lead Actress—suggest otherwise, many complained of lackluster storylines that fell flat compared to previous seasons.
Looking ahead to the show’s fifth season, however, Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith), Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates), Allen Leech (Tom Branson), Gareth Neame (executive producer, Downton Abbey), and Rebecca Eaton (executive producer, Masterpiece) spoke at the Television Critics Association, addressing season-four criticism and what fans can look forward to in season five.

The world doesn't stop turning, even at "Downton Abbey."
The venerable estate may still keep to many of the old ways, but as ever-correct butler Carson (Jim Carter) intones in this 20-second teaser for Season 5, "I feel a shaking of the ground I stand on."
Change has already come to the Abbey, and began moving at a faster pace last season as Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and brother-in-law Tom Branson (Allen Leech) began a mission to modernize the estate's farming practices.
But as Carson says, even more change is coming, so what might we expect in the next season of "Downton Abbey"? There are new characters, of course, including the Dowager Countess' new maid (Sue Johnston), art historian Simon Bricker (Richard E. Grant), and Lady Anstruther (Anna Chancellor), who was Jimmy's former employer.
There will be new romances, or at least, continuation of previous ones. Lady Mary will likely choose betwen her two suitors,...

[Spoiler alert for Sunday's Downton Abbey!]
On the season finale of Downton Abbey, one important question is left up in the air — who will be Lady Mary’s new love.
Both of her main suitors — Charles Blake and Tony Gillingham — reiterated their intentions toward Mary. And plot-wise, viewers learned Charles is going to inherit a baronetcy, something that would seem to suggest that Charles is in the lead. (We all know how Mary can be.) But Mary wound up depriving viewers of a romantic moment when she told both men she still wasn’t ready. (Fair enough: Nothing is going to top the romance of this season finale anyway.

Downton Abbey finished its fourth season last night, all full of secrets and romances and vengeance-murders and jazz music. Oh, Downton: The show where nothing really changes. (Seriously: When will Daisy get a promotion?) Lady Mary finds herself in much of the same position she found herself in during season one: Which of her suitors suits her best? There's Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen), the dapper aristocrat Mary's known forever, and Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden), the secretly wealthy government official who initially rubs Mary the wrong way. Vulture's Amanda Dobbins and Margaret Lyons debate the respective merits of these two love interests.Amanda: Margaret! We are here today to argue about Lady Mary’s romantic interests, since we have very different opinions on the matter. You like Anthony Gillingham. I do not understand why. Could you please explain? Margaret: I feel like I should just paste a picture of his face here.

Rose has her big coming out in London and lands the Crawley's in the middle of a royal affair in Downton Abbey’s season 4 finale.
Eight months after the events of last week’s episode, the episode picked up with Edith (Laura Carmichael) already having given birth to her baby. The entire Crawley family is in London for Rose’s big day, and Rose (Lily James) kicks off her coming out party early with a disastrous visit to a nightclub with Madeleine Allsopp. At the nightclub, Rose befriends Freda Dudley Ward, the mistress of the Prince of Wales. After laughing about a letter Freda has in her purse, Freda notices that it is missing and accuses Rose of stealing the letter. In fact, it was Mr. Sampson, the man who cheated the men at Downton out of their small fortunes at cards.

"Downton Abbey" goes "Ocean's Eleven" in a ridiculous (but kind of fun) plotline during "the season" in London, while hopefully Anna and Bates can finally start moving on.
Upstairs
The Crawleys are in London, including Cora's mother and brother, for Lady Rose's presentation to society. While there, Rose is keeping company with Freda Dudley Ward, who in real life was the mistress to the Prince of Wales, just like here on "Downton." The prince is Edward VIII, son of George V and uncle to the present-day Queen Elizabeth II.
There's a whole heist storyline, as Freda's love letter from the prince is stolen from her handbag by the nefarious card cheat Sampson. Robert's Eleven swing into action to get the letter back, with Bates emerging as the big hero when he manages to swipe the letter from Sampson's overcoat and all is safe with the British monarchy (for now).

I don't want to say the Christmas episode of "Downton Abbey" was much ado about nothing, as there really wasn't much ado at all. This was a relatively staid ending to a fairly low-key season, and even the significant twists either happened off-screen or, thanks to our stiff-upper-lip Brits, barely registered. Admittedly, that doesn't mean nothing happened. There were a few notable guest appearances (Paul Giamatti for the win!) and there are clearly big plot lines brewing for next season. Well, maybe. The biggest storyline was Edith's, though initially we had every reason to believe this one was going to be wrapped up and shoved under the carpet as yet another dirty little Crawley secret. Though some of Edith's scenes of self-discovery were ploddingly on the nose ("We should make more scenes! We should let it all out! Hint, hint!"), at least we were given some idea of how she...

"Downton Abbey's" fourth season has been highlighted by the beginnings of a fight -- albeit an exceedingly polite one -- for Lady Mary's heart. She's not quite ready to move on, but Mary has been enjoying the attention from both Lord Anthony Gillingham (Tom Cullen) and Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden).
Mary hasn't chosen one of her strapping suitors just yet, but which side are you on? Some "Downton" cast members make their choices in the above video.
Lesley Nicol is on Team Gillingham, while Allen Leech and Laura Carmichael agree with Zap2it that Blake has tension with Mary and he challenges her the way Matthew did. Leech adds that Evelyn Napier might also be an Ok choice, to which we say -- shhh, you be quiet, Allen Leech.
Phyllis Logan puts another vote in the Team Blake column, while Hugh Bonneville says he can't possibly choose between them...

Anthony Gillingham vs. Charles Blake: Find out which lucky guy will win Mary’s heart in Season 5!
Downton Abbey‘s fourth season hasn’t even finished airing in the U.S., but Season 5 is already being filmed across the pond, and it looks like Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) has finally chosen between her potential suitors! Michelle was recently spotted shooting a kissing scene with a very familiar face, which might surprise some viewers.

It’s Anthony “Tony” Gillingham! Yes, Michelle was seen filming alongside Tom Cullen, and things got pretty dramatic. Needless to say, Mabel Lane Fox is not happy about these new shots.
Dressed in an exquisite blue coat, Michelle planted a passionate kiss on Tom, before quickly turning around, seeming upset about something.

Warning: "Downton Abbey" Season 4 has not finished airing in the United States, but the show has started filming Season 5 in the U.K. Do not keep reading if you don't want to know anything about Sunday's (Feb. 23) season finale.
Pictures have made their way online (via the Daily Mail) of Michelle Dockery and Tom Cullen filming a scene for "Downton's" fifth season, production for which just got underway. In the scene, Dockery's Lady Mary Crawley can be seen kissing Cullen's Lord Anthony Gillingham outside a building meant to represent the Grand Hotel in Liverpool.
Does this mean Lady Mary has made her choice?
As Season 4 winds down, Mary is caught between two men, the besotted Gillingham and the more prickly (but still besotted because -- it's Lady Mary) Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden). She doesn't make a choice in the fourth-season finale, but perhaps these pictures indicate that Mary has chosen...

Only one more episode after this week, "Downton Abbey" fans. How do you think everything will wrap up?
Upstairs
Mary's "desire of suitors" is back, enjoying the fun of the spring bazaar at the estate and, of course, fawning all over the most eligible bachelorette in York. Lord Gillingham has ended his engagement to Mabel and it seems he and Charles Blake are committed to trying to win Mary's heart. She's very upfront with them about not being ready yet and they're very respectful of one another, so it's fun to watch the three of them (as Lord Grantham calls them, "a menage") traipsing around the carnival.
Do you hope she chooses one of them in the finale next week? Or is this a storyline you'd like to see play out in Season 5?
Speaking of romances, Tom Branson has yet again encountered Sarah Bunting. She's a perfect fit for him -- she's political,...

The hate-romance between Lady Mary and Charles Blake this season has been as tiresome as it’s been obvious. Like an unlikable version of Matthew, Blake (Julian Oveden) has burst onto the scene as an aggressor building schoolyard chemistry even as both he and Mary proclaim their distaste for each other. It’s a repetition of the formula that makes sense for the character (apparently Mary has a type), but it’s been poor service for anyone hoping that the estate would prove to be a genuine focus. Here we are a brief time after Matthew’s death, and Mary has a gaggle of suitors. Because — what other story could there be for a well-bred woman of the 20th century? Fortunately, with the help of some ailing pigs, we’ve seen a new side from Blake. Or, at the very least, we’ve seen that he has a take-command brand of expertise. He...

Plus, Edith arrives at a heartbreaking solution to her growing problem.
Lady Mary… covered in mud… cooking and dining in the servants’ quarters?! On the latest "Downton Abbey," things take a rather hopeless turn for Lady Edith, while Lady Mary impresses Charles Blake by wading through pig poop (really).
Upstairs
Lord Grantham is largely absent from this episode, as he leaves for America to help his brother-in-law Harold through the Teapot Dome scandal. He takes Thomas with him as his valet because Lady Mary asks him to.
Why? Because Mrs. Hughes doesn't think Bates should be away from Anna with her (and their marriage) in such a fragile state, so Mrs. Hughes tells Mary what happened to Anna so that Mary will help out.
Mary is, of course, horrified at the news and very kind to Bates, telling him it wasn't his fault. She also urges Anna to go to the authorities but respects Anna's wishes to leave it be. Anna also has her own crying-in-the-hallway scene that is just as heartbreaking as Bates' scene last week.

"Downton Abbey" has added quite a few new faces for Season 4, including three handsome fellows in the form of (from left) Julian Ovenden, Tom Cullen and Gary Carr. The three are gracing the inside of the February issue of Vogue, where each spills a small tidbit about his time on "Downton."
Cullen, on refining his natural Wales accent to that of a British aristocrat: "I pretend to be my English grandmother. She's so posh her jaw doesn't move when she speaks."
Ovenden, on the contentious relationship between Charles Blake and Lady Mary: "He stays in the house, which is awkward, but they discover things about each other that are perhaps less different."
Carr, on his character possibly encountering racism: "As a black man in the twenties, he's already a celebrity. He doesn't have such a chip on his shoulder. He's wearing tails and sharp suits. It's really great."

The Feb. 2 episode of Downton Abbey introduced a new man to Lady Mary’s circle, Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden). Mary thought he’d be staying at Downton as he completes a report on how family estates can be saved, while he’s actually there to determine what effect their demise would have on the food source. Neither one seems to think much of the other now, but that could change. “I immediately take a very strong dislike to Lady Mary partly, I think, because we’re very similar — quite alpha personalities,” Ovenden says of Blake. “I see her as someone living in the past,...

Lady Isobel and Lady Violet went head to head while Edith found out she's pregnant and Rose had a dalliance with the black jazz singer in Downton Abbey.
Evelyn Napier (Brendan Patricks) has returned to Downton with a new man, Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden), in tow. Charles reveals to Mary (Michelle Dockery) that the duo are not there to study and preserve old estates, but to study how the fall of English aristocracy will impact food supply. Mary is furious and thus Charles and Mary find themselves at odds.
Edith (Laura Carmichael) receives a note from her doctor informing her that she is pregnant. The father, Michael Gregson, is nowhere to be found, and Edith could find herself an unwed mother. In other family drama, Lady Violet (Maggie Smith) and Mrs. Crawley (Penelope Wilton) had a verbal spat after the Dowager Countess accused the boy gardener, John, of stealing things from her study.

It's Lord Grantham's birthday this week on "Downton Abbey" and Lady Rose, the resident party girl of the manor, has taken it upon herself to plan a party for him -- which means the return of cute bandleader Jack Ross (guest star Gary Carr).

The birthday party goes off without a hitch, though Rose's hiring of Jack Ross' band to play for the evening certainly raises a few eyebrows. Jack Ross
