Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez star in "Lila & Eve," the "Thelma & Louise"-esque drama-thriller from director Charles Stone III, which also features Shea Whigham, Julius Tennon, Ron Caldwell, and Aml Ameen in front of the camera. The story follows Lila (Davis), a grief-stricken mother reeling from her son’s murder, who attends a support group where she meets Eve (Lopez), who urges her to take matters into her own hands to track down her son’s killers. They pair then embark on a journey of sweet revenge. ChickFlick Productions and JuVee Productions are producers on the film - JuVee Productions is Viola...

Day of the Mother: Stone’s Flighty Revenge Thriller Favors Laughs
There’s a certain degree of entertainment to be gleaned from director Charles Stone III’s latest feature, Lila & Eve, from first time screenwriter Pat Gilfallan, though unfortunately in the form of unintentional comedy. Derided as a camp after its late premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, it’s Stone’s first directorial feature in over a decade (he’s been working in television since the 2004 Bernie Mac headlined Mr 3000, including the widely discussed TLC Lifetime film CrazySexyCool), and most likely won’t garner much favorable attention. Bearing the familiar turns we’ve become accustomed to in the limited subgenre of female driven revenge films, Gilfallan peppers his scenario with bits of illogical instances and eventually neuters the shock value of his big twist well before the third act begins. And even though this robs the film of its sleazy,...

I didn't attend the Sundance Film Festival this year, so I haven't seen this yet (it made its world premiere there in January). But it's definitely been high on my "curiosity" list, and it's good to finally see what it's going to look, sound and feel like - at least as much as a trailer can give. Here's the penultimate list of films selected to screen at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival (2015), the Sundance Institute announced today: the out-of-competition Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections, as well as the selections for a new Special Events section and participants for two panels. Of note, with respect to this blog's interests, titles I could immediately identify that we've been following include: the "Thelma & Louise"-esque "Lila & Eve" from director Charles Stone III, which stars Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez, and are joined by Shea Whigham, Julius Tennon, Ron Caldwell, Aml Ameen; Director Stanley Nelson's feature-length...

Last year’s slate of seventeen Narrative Premieres (excluding secret screenings of Boyhood and Nymphomaniac: Vol. I) refreshingly included works from first time filmmakers. I hadn’t seen it coming but Little Accidents and The One I Love were included among the likes of Calvary, Frank and Love is Strange. 2015 will be a true we Swanberg family affair with Joe Swanberg joining wife Kris (Unexpected) with a feature as well in Digging for Fire. James Ponsoldt is officially four for four with Sundance — his latest End of the Tour should be a slam dunk for the Eccles. Sticking to the numbers game… we’ll have a lovely bedfellow pairings of Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s already announced The Stanford Prison Experiment which is going to be mentioned in many loglines alongside Michael Almereyda’s Experimenter - about the Milgram experiment. Among the filmmaking duos we were expecting, we find Mississippi Grind...

Festival top brass have revealed a high-profile roster of out-of-competition Premieres and Documentary Premieres entries featuring many returning heroes, as well as a new Special Events section and panel participants including George Lucas.
Justin Kelly’s I Am Michael is likely to become a major talking point and stars James Franco and Zachary Quinto in the true tale of activist and Young Gay America co-founder Michael Glatze, who renounced his homosexuality and became a Christian pastor. The Exchange handles international rights.
James Ponsoldt’s David Foster Wallace film End Of The Tour (pictured, photo by Jakob Ihre) starring Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel makes the cut — Fortitude International is the international sales agent — as does the latest from the newly prolific Noah Baumbach, whose Mistress America stars his Frances Ha and Greenberg muse Greta Gerwig and arrives three months after the Toronto premiere of While We’re Young.

The Sundance Institute effectively filled out its slate for the 2015 Sundance Film Festival with the announcement of the always star-friendly premieres category. It's also where many former Sundance filmmakers bring their second, third and even fourth films back to the fest. This year the category features 16 world premieres and almost all of them are from Sundance alumni, including Ryan Fleck ("Half Nelson"), Noah Baumbach ("The Squid and the Whale"), Joe Swanberg ("VHS"), Jared Hess ("Napoleon Dynamite"), James Ponsoldt ("The Spectacular Now"), Michael Almereyda (2000's "Hamlet"), Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives"), Benson Lee ("Miss Monday"), Leslye Headland ("Bachelorette"), and Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman ("American Splendor"). Some of the intriguing titles include Paul Weitz's "Grandma" with Lily Tomlin and Laverne Cox, Ryan Fleck and Anna Bowden's "Mississippi Grind" with Ryan Reynolds and Sienna Miller, Garcia's "Last Days in the Desert" featuring Ewan McGregor as Jesus, Charles Stone III's "Lila...

Amarok Productions is tackling the tough subject of how violence is robbing the innocence of our youth in its current short film entitled The Painter. Written and directed by Kevin Cooper, The Painter’s poignant anti-violence film can be seen at UrbanWorld Film Festival on September 20th 5 p.m. and September 21st at Noon at AMC 34th Street 14.
Cooper partnered with non-profit organizations (Ucan and Youth Guidance) to include children from high risk areas in the filmmaking process. “It was inspiring working with these children…a film about the violence with the help of victims,” says Cooper.
Ron Caldwell (“Flight”) stars in the film and will be in attendance at UrbanWorld.
A boy, barely 12-years-old, lives in a world where violence surrounds him. His sole means of survival is to escape the violence outside by creating art. He is alone – abandoned for as long as he can remember. He begins...
