Renowned for her acting prowess, Angelina Jolie almost portrayed the historical figure Cleopatra in a film, which was ultimately canceled. Following the disastrous reception of Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1963 film, numerous filmmakers have expressed interest in bringing their vision of the Egyptian queen to the screen.

Brian Helgeland has been discussing his script for Sony’s aborted take on Cleopatra which was set to star Angelina Jolie…
Cleopatra is one of those iconic figures that Hollywood seems perpetually interested in bringing to the screen again, even if the vast majority of these projects never seem to get anywhere.
One of the other nearly-ran Cleopatra projects was set to feature Angelina Jolie back in 2011. Writer and director Brian Helgeland has been chatting about his time on the project as the first writer to get a crack at the script. According to the director of Payback and A Knight’s Tale, it would have included some surprising events, apparently rooted in history:
“I was the very first writer on Cleopatra when it was being developed for Angelina Jolie to star in, which was almost made,” Helgeland said in an interview with Inverse.

Hollywood has been trying to get another Cleopatra movie off the ground for quite some time, and one of those iterations was set to star Angelina Jolie as the iconic Egyptian Queen.
Brian Helgeland was the first writer to take a stab at Angelina Jolie’s Cleopatra movie, and he shared a few details while talking with Inverse. “I was the very first writer on Cleopatra when it was being developed for Angelina Jolie to star in, which was almost made,” Helgeland said. “I don’t have anything to do with the current version unless they call me and want to use my draft.“
Helgeland continued, saying the movie “had elements of a political thriller with assassinations and sex,” but at its heart, it was an epic split between Cleopatra’s love affairs with Caesar and Mark Antony. “Lots of true events surprised me when I was writing it. For example,...

Angelina Jolie’s scrapped “Cleopatra” movie was part romance epic and part “political thriller with assassinations and sex,” according to the movie’s original screenwriter Brian Helgeland. The Oscar-winning actor was set to play the Egyptian queen in a tentpole for Sony Pictures that once courted director David Fincher to helm. It never got off the ground.
“I was the very first writer on ‘Cleopatra’ when it was being developed for Angelina Jolie to star in, which was almost made,” Helgeland said in an interview with Inverse. “It had elements of a political thriller with assassinations and sex, but it’s an epic that’s divided between her love affairs with Caesar and Marc Antony. Long live Queen Cleopatra, even if her film adaptations have been plagued for more than half a century.
After Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1963 “Cleopatra” starring Elizabeth Taylor made history as one of the biggest box office disasters ever, a long-gestating adaptation was set with Angelina Jolie attached to star (and directors like David Fincher and Ang Lee being attached at different times). “A Knight’s Tale” and “Man on Fire” writer Brian Helgeland wrote the script, and while the film was “almost made,” it eventually fell by the wayside.
Now, Helgeland is recalling the details of the scrapped project in a new interview with Inverse. “I was the very first writer on ‘Cleopatra’ when it was being developed for Angelina Jolie to star in, which was almost made,” Helgeland said. “It had elements of a political thriller with assassinations and sex, but it’s an epic that’s divided between her...

There’s never been a better time to be a Star Wars fan in terms of quantity. There’s more Star Wars on screen and on the page now than ever before in the franchise’s history. From Disney+ series to video games to The High Republic books and Marvel comics, you can experience new adventures in the galaxy far, far away pretty much any way you want it right now. If Lucasfilm were able to get some movies off the ground, we’d be able to say that the franchise is firing on all cylinders.
Whether or not we finally do get some new Star Wars on the big screen in the years to come, the future of the franchise is still very bright, thanks to TV series like The Mandalorian, which has already expanded across multiple spinoffs full of Original Trilogy nostalgia and exciting new characters. In fact,...

After Dune: Part Two, Denis Villeneuve will potentially make Dune Messiah, but won’t continue making further entries, the director has said.
After a lengthy delay, director Denis Villeneuve’s much-anticipated Dune: Part Two is only a month away. And as the sci-fi follow-up to 2021’s Dune readies for release, Villeneuve has talked about his interest in making a third film – an adaptation of novelist Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah – and how he’s happy to end his involvement in the saga there.
Herbert’s operatic space fantasy continued for five further novels after the seminal Dune, published in 1965, while his son Brian and other authors continued the narrative in a string of other books after he author’s passing in 1986. But while there’s a veritable sea of books and stories to draw from in future movies, Villeneuve seemed content to move onto other projects after the completion of Dune Messiah.

Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve hints at Dune 3 (Photo Credit – wikimedia/IMDb)
We are just a few weeks away from the release of Dune: Part Two. It’s a Denis Villeneuve directorial that stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Lea Seydoux, Dave Bautista, Austin Butler, and Stellan Skarsgard. Based on author Frank Herbert’s Dune book series, Denis has turned his first book into two movies, the first one released in 2021.
The trailer and promos of Dune: Part Two have stirred enough curiosity among the audience to see what Timothee’s character, Paul Atreides, will do to avenge what happened to his family. We all know the second film will end on a cliffhanger, naturally making way for the third Dune film. Dune 3 will be based on Herbert’s sequel to his first book, Dune Messiah. In an interview, Denis hinted that the threequel is indeed happening,...

Taika Waititi might not be down for the count, but he's definitely been in a slump lately. Since taking home an Oscar for his efforts on his polarizing WWII dramedy "Jojo Rabbit" (a film I'm willing to go to bat for), the multi-hyphenate got a middling, bordering on hostile response to his return to the "Thor" movies with "Thor: Love and Thunder" (a film I'm ... less willing to go to bat for) and an even harsher reaction to his true story sports comedy "Next Goal Wins". Recently, Waititi admitted to The Hollywood Reporter he's been feeling "a bit fatigued by working on those big films, studio films," which is why he plans to cleanse his palate by working on something smaller next.
However, when he finally does return to the big-budget arena, he might just take a crack at one of the biggest franchises out there -- "Star Wars." Waititi...

No one knows when Taika Waititi‘s “Star Wars” movie will come out, but it’s still in the Lucasfilm pipeline. And outside of being in development, the only thing known about it is that it’ll come after Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni, and James Mangold‘s upcoming films hit theaters first. What Waititi and co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns have in store for “Star Wars” fans is anyone’s guess, but Variety reports that Waititi teased his film on the red carpet of his latest film with his trademark humor.

Slade’s previous work has received critical acclaim, with his first feature “Hard Candy” winning the jury and audience first prize at the 2005 Sitges Film Festival of Horror, before being acquired by Lionsgate out of Sundance. He also shown a flare for studio-driven and franchise films, such as Summit’s “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “30 Days of Night” for Sony. Natalie Portman told GQ magazine that she’s open to returning to the “Star Wars” franchise, 18 years after “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” served as her exit from the long-running space saga. Portman starred in all three of George Lucas’ prequel films as Padmé Amidala, who wins the heart of Anakin Skywalker.
“I have no information on this,” Portman said when a fan floated the idea of her coming back to the franchise. “No one’s ever asked me to return, but I’m open to it.”
Portman’s Padmé died in labor after giving birth to Luke and Leia in “Revenge of the Sith,” but the “Star Wars” franchise has a history of bringing back long-presumed dead characters (see “Phantom Menace” villain Darth Maul popping back up in “Solo.”).

In November of 2017, just prior to the release of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," it was announced that director Rian Johnson, working with his creative collaborator Ram Bergman, would immediately begin work on three new "Star Wars" feature films, set entirely apart from the Skywalker-centric story already being explored. The actual story or content of this mysterious new trilogy was not revealed, although Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy expressed enthusiasm, saying that Johnson was "a creative force, and watching him craft 'The Last Jedi' from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career."
In May 2020, it was likewise announced that Taika Waititi, the director of "Jojo Rabbit" and an episode of "The Mandalorian," was also going to be co-writing and directing his own "Star Wars" feature film with award-winning "1917" and "Last Night in Soho" screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking to Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the Oscar-nominated writer behind films such as 1917, Last Night In Soho and last year’s Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne starrer The Good Nurse. We sit down with the Scottish talent to talk about how she collaborates with big directors like Sam Mendes and Edgar Wright, her new outfit Great Company and why she plans to pay it forward.
If you’re unfamiliar with the word gallus, you haven’t met Krysty Wilson-Cairns. The Scottish writer uses the colloquial term to describe herself when reflecting on how she got work experience on the popular long-running Scottish detective series Taggart, which was shooting in her Glasgow neighborhood the summer she turned 15.
“I had somewhere I had to be,” recalls Wilson-Cairns.

Have a yen for the music, style and glamour of ’60s Swinging London? Edgar Wright’s hybrid time capsule / music extravaganza / horror thriller is an audiovisual delight from one end to the other. Young women from different decades seek to conquer London by different means — they meet as soul twins in a ghost world, where bloodsoaked murders haunt their dreams. Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy are the psychic twins; stars Rita Tushingham, Terence Stamp and the late Diana Rigg bring the authenticity. Soho can boast the most creatively ‘alive’ visuals of 2021.

During the 2022 Power Women Summit panel “Inside the Writer’s Room: Telling Stories That Matter” on Tuesday, moderator Carla Renata asked the group about their advice for breaking into film and television screenwriting.
“Ozark” screenwriter Ning Zhou emphasized that “everyone has a different path,” citing herself as an example. She knows many screenwriters who studied the craft and business in college, but she had a less traditional start in the field by switching gears mid-career.

“I’m someone that prefers to react to what’s in front of me, rather than going out with an aspiration or ambition of what I could play,” reveals Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne in our recent webchat. He plays serial killer Charles Cullin in “The Good Nurse,” which made its Netflix debut on October 26. “This script arrived in my hands six years ago and I knew [director Tobias Lindholm‘s] work. When I read the script it had the label of true crime, but as it unraveled it seemed almost genre-less. It refused to be boxed.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“Write what you know” — the age-old advice to aspiring writers has long been debated by distinguished wordsmiths and creative minds. Kazuo Ishiguro, writer of the 2022 British drama “Living,” has said the phrase “is the most stupid thing I’ve heard. … It’s the reverse of firing the imagination and potential of writers.” Does similar thinking still govern the studio heads who greenlight movies, the consumers who watch them and especially the awards voters who nominate them?
Maybe that explains why, in an industry dominated by white men, women are struggling to be recognized in the Oscars’ screenplay categories. While the Academy continues its pursuit of inclusion, women artists and filmmakers are still fighting to have their contributions seen. Multiple women may land in the directing race this year, but the screenplay categories are in dire need of improvement. In 2014, the year #OscarsSoWhite was born, none of the writing nominees in either category was a woman.

‘The Good Nurse’ Star Eddie Redmayne Found Humanity in the Inhumane for the Netflix True Crime Drama
Click here to read the full article.
In Tobias Lindholm’s Netflix drama The Good Nurse, Eddie Redmayne plays real-life serial killer Charlie Cullen, who at first seems like a sweet, docile hospital nurse until it’s revealed over the course of the film that he’s been stealthily killing perhaps hundreds of patients — for no apparent reason. Fellow Oscar winner Jessica Chastain stars as Cullen’s colleague Amy Loughren, who discovers Cullen’s crimes and fights a corrupt medical system to expose him.
Loughren’s fight served as the subject of Charles Graeber’s nonfiction book of the same name, which became the basis for the script by Krysty Wilson-Cairns (a best screenplay Oscar nominee for 1917). Loughren met with both Redmayne and Chastain prior to filming and even visited the set. After six years of production, with stops and starts as funding came and went, her story is finally out in the world.

It’s the week before Eddie Redmayne’s latest film, Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse,” hits select theaters after a robust festival run. The Oscar winner is in an SUV, zipping from one engagement to the next. He’s been everywhere lately, Toronto to New York, Mill Valley to Newport Beach, Los Angeles to London. He’s all smiles.
And, hilariously, the genial Brit somehow lights up even more when asked why he took on the role of Charles Cullen, potentially America’s most prolific serial killer, for the Netflix drama.
Me: “This is so not an Eddie Redmayne role. You’re a serial killer!” Redmayne: “Oh, that’s like the loveliest thing you could possibly say!”

“I was thinking how my favorite parts are my least favorite parts simultaneously,” says “Turning Red” writer Julia Cho about the creative process. “My favorite part is when I’m alone, and I’m in my pajamas. And it’s 4am, no one else is up, and it’s really quiet. And I get to just immerse myself in my imagination.” But solitude is a double-edged sword. We talked to Cho along with David Kajganich (“Bones and All”), Lena Dunham (“Catherine Called Birdy”) and Krysty Wilson-Cairns (“The Good Nurse”) for our “Meet the Experts” film writers panel. Watch our group discussion above. Click on each individual name to watch that person’s solo chat.
Cho’s description of late-night writing sessions are “extremely familiar” to Dunham, who also loves “the great incredible highs that come with feeling like you get to enter another world and the feeling of problem solving that feels almost miraculous.

Oscar season isn’t complete without a good old-fashioned movie about the magic of movies. Searchlight Pictures has released the full trailer for “Empire of Light,” Sam Mendes’ upcoming movie theater romance.
Set in the 1980s, “Empire of Light” focuses on middle-aged Hilary Small (Olivia Colman), an employee of “The Empire,” a cinema in a coastal English town with a history of mental illness and a dependency on lithium. Depressed and lonely, Hilary forms an unexpected romance with Stephen (Micheal Ward), a young Black man who begins working at the theater after getting rejected from graduate school. The romance broadens the previously apathetic Hilary’s world, and she slowly begins to develop an appreciation for film as an art form. In addition to the May-December romance between the main characters, the film also explores major British political events of the ’80s, particularly the 1981 Brixton Riots and the rise of the far-right fascist National Front party.

Nurse Amy Loughren is shocked when Charlie Cullen, one of her colleagues, is found responsible for the murder of dozens of patients over a period of sixteen years, across two states and nine hospitals, without being charged.
There’s a certain atmosphere present in Tobias Lindholm‘s The Good Nurse that will leave you feeling deeply disturbed and uncomfortable throughout every single minute of its over two-hour running time. Lindholm and screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns have crafted a film that feels so sickening to the point where you can barely stomach it. It’s made even more freaky when you consider the fact that it’s all based on a true story.
The Good Nurse is the definition of a slow-burning crime drama that will leave you guessing at nearly every turn.

It feels inappropriate to call the true crime genre "entertainment," but it's never been more evident that audiences can't get enough of dark stories based on real-life events. The true crime bubble keeps getting bigger, and Netflix is cashing in on these stories in a very big way. Despite the protests from the living family members of the victims of Jeffrey Dahmer, Netflix forged through with Ryan Murphy's "Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story," and the show was a massive success. Murphy's follow-up project, "The Watcher," was so popular it impacted the sales of home security cameras, and the recent release of "The Good Nurse" is proof the streamer doesn't have any intention of changing pace anytime soon.

Charles Cullen is America’s most prolific serial killer, presumed to have murdered over 400 people throughout his 16-year career as a nurse in New Jersey. So why is his name barely recognizable, even to the most die-hard true crime enthusiasts?

The Netflix movie stars Oscar winners Eddie Redmayne as Cullen and Jessica Chastain as Amy Loughren, the co-worker who befriended him. “I worked on ‘Mindhunter’ with David Fincher and I thought we had covered and read and did all our research on the American phenomenon with serial killers, yet the most prolific one we had never heard of.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

For The Good Nurse brain trust of director Tobias Lindholm and writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the question is how, not why.
In the Netflix thriller-drama, Lindholm and Wilson-Cairns tell the true story of how a compassionate ICU nurse named Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain) managed to take down fellow nurse Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), arguably the deadliest serial killer in American history. Loughren showed tremendous bravery at a time when she was not only raising two daughters by herself, but also dealing with a life-threatening heart condition without health insurance.
The film also puts a spotlight on the many hospitals that turned a blind eye to Cullen’s behavior, exposing even more flaws in the U.S. healthcare system. Cullen ultimately pled guilty to the murders of 29 patients, but the actual number over the course of his 16-year nursing career is in the ballpark of 400.

Getting started in the entertainment industry is difficult. Becoming successful in that same industry — even more so. Being considered by your peers to be one of the best examples of the craft to the point where you are nominated for screenwriting’s highest honor — nearly impossible. And for it to happen to anyone under the age of 40, that individual must be talented, passionate, and in her own words, “incredibly lucky.”
Glasgow-born Krysty Wilson-Cairns’ career, at first glance, looks as if she was able to find every proverbial four-leaf clover along the path (if you’ll forgive the Irish analogy when speaking about a Scottish writer).

Yesterday, news broke that Damon Lindelof, co-creator of hit shows like “Lost” and “The Leftovers,” was working on a new “Star Wars” feature film, to be directed by Oscar-winning documentarian and “Ms. Marvel” director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Now TheWrap has confirmed that Justin Britt-Gibson will co-write the screenplay alongside Lindelof. In addition, other new details have emerged about what the project is and how Lindelof is developing the story.
According to a report in THR, a writers’ room was convened shortly after Star Wars Celebration, the all-“Star Wars” convention that was held in Anaheim, California, across the street from Disneyland earlier this year. The writer’s room was held for two weeks in July and included participation from Lindelof’s “Leftovers” collaborator (and “Station Eleven” creator) Patrick Somerville; “Obi-Wan Kenobi” consulting producer Rayna McClendon and Andy Greenwald, creator of the short-lived but deeply brilliant USA series “Briarpatch,” which had the...

The secret Star Wars movie project that is being led creatively by Damon Lindelof was thrust into the open Sunday night when it was revealed that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who directed two episodes of Ms. Marvel, was on board as helmer.
The project has been in the works for months, and while Lindelof is getting the Wookiee-sized share of attention, thanks in no small part to a pedigree that includes co-creating TV sensation Lost and shepherding the acclaimed HBO series Watchmen, he is by no means the only person involved in the project.
In fact, if Lost and Watchmen, as well as The Leftovers, another beloved series Lindelof created, have shown anything, it’s that one of the writer’s chief talents is picking gifted collaborators.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Lindelof is writing the new Star Wars script with Justin Britt-Gibson, a...

A new “Star Wars” movie is in the works at Lucasfilm, courtesy of writer Damon Lindelof and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, according to media reports. Lindelof will co-write the script, while Obaid-Chinoy directs.
At this point, no script has been crafted yet, but Lindelof is reported to be co-writing the project. It is not known who his writing partner is. Lindelof is best known as the co-creator of “Lost,” and has experience in space — just not the galaxy far, far away. Lindelof produced J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot “Star Trek” and co-wrote the sequel “Star Trek Into Darkness.” Obaid-Chinoy is already part of the Disney family of course, having directed several episodes of “Ms. Marvel” for Disney+.
Reps for Lucasfilm, Obaid-Chinoy and Lindelof did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
At this point, it’s unclear who or what their “Star Wars” movie will center on, and where in the timeline it’ll fall.

“Star Wars” secrecy lives on. While the ever-popular franchise is currently enjoying a robust run of new and returning television series, its movie component is still chugging along after the completion of the sequel trilogy in 2019 with J.J. Abrams’ “The Rise of Skywalker.” But while there are currently a pair of new “Star Wars” films on the calendar, we still know very little about them.
One thing we do know: One of them will be directed and co-written by Oscar winner Taika Waititi, who takes on the challenge of a standalone “Star Wars” feature film with fellow screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns, which was announced way back in 2020. So, what is about? Wilson-Cairns is staying mum.
The Oscar-nominated screenwriter is currently promoting her true-life Netflix drama “The Good Nurse,” but has a number of other projects in the works, including Waititi’s long-gestating “Star Wars” feature. But she can’t say,...
