As Hollywood heads back into production, some are finding prohibitive costs for ensuring Covid-19 safety. New service companies are stepping up to fill the need for reasonably priced, fast testing of crew and casts.
Nearly a year into the pandemic, the field is increasingly crowded as productions of all sizes look to comply with protocols, keep sets safe and contain risk.
“We learned working with some of our other clients that there is a tremendous amount of misinformation and confusion in the testing marketplace. American Chopper executive producer Franco Porporino is starting a business called Covid Film Certification to educate production crews and talent on set as Hollywood resumes production.
He’s calling it a one-stop shop for non-scripted television, the area he knowns best. It offers – alone or in combination — industry-specific safety exams for production personnel, crew and talent on CDC guidelines and other best practices on set; compliance officer training; Epa approved PPE; consulting services by experienced showrunners to create customized budgets; and nurses who can also be trained as compliance officers.
“Many producers are facing significant hurdles in light of all the complications and challenges posed by Covid-19. Production companies need to get back to work but must do so in a way that prioritizes health and safety for all personnel,” Porporino said.

Gold Rush creator and star Todd Hoffman has partnered with Bering Sea Gold executive producers Thom Beers and Jeff Conroy on another series set in the world of amateur gold mining, this time in the competition reality space.
Hoffman and Jose Behar’s Züm Media has signed a development deal with Beers and Conroy’s new multi-platform production company BoBCat Studios to create the show.
Tentatively titled Greenhorn Gold, the series will feature a cast of men and women from all walks of life as novice miners attempting to dig for gold in a blue collar, competition-style reality show. After a massive tryout, the greenhorn miners will be eliminated one-by one until only six remain at the end of the season.
