A host of global independent producers attending the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival have voiced their concerns on the issue of IP retention when it comes to working with the streamers in their local territories and are urging more agreeable terms in partnerships.
“You cannot run a company out of a producing fee, you have to run it based on exploiting the IP,” said Czech producer Filip Bobiñski, co-founder of Dramedy Productions and a board member of the European Association of Independent Producers.
In a panel hosted by Deadline and Ace Producers at Kviff’s Industry Days program, Bobiñski was joined by Birdman producer John Lesher from the U.S., Roma producer Nicolás Celis from Mexico and Polish producer Joanna Szymańska to discuss the opportunities and challenges of producing with the streamers in the post-pandemic ecosystem.

After years of frustration with the course of the country’s politics, Poland’s labor minister has all but thrown in the towel. An idealist at heart, she’s ready to resign when an unexpected controversy opens the door for her to rise to the very top of the political establishment. The only thing standing in her way? A fiery, rebellious, openly gay chef who’s suddenly captured the minister’s heart. With her political fortunes hanging in the balance, she has to choose between her career and love—even though she manages to win at both in the end.
“Politics of Love” is perhaps not the most conventional romantic comedy to come from Poland, a country whose president, Andrzej Duda, has in recent years decried homosexuality as an “ideology” and made anti-lgbtq rhetoric a central tenet of his ruling Law and Justice Party.

The TorinoFilmLab has announced the 20 feature projects and five story editor trainees who have been selected to take part in the 2019 edition of ScriptLab, an initiative focused on the development of fiction feature film scripts in early development stage.
Beginning in March, this year’s participants will team up with filmmakers from around the world to develop their feature-length scripts. The program includes three week-long workshop residencies and two online sessions, during which the 20 projects are divided into five work groups, each guided by an international script consultant and paired with one story editor trainee.
The ScriptLab culminates with a final presentation at the TorinoFilmLab Meeting Event in November, when the 20 participants will pitch their projects to an international audience of producers, sales agents, and other film professionals. They’ll also have one-to-one meetings with key decision-makers in the industry and see their projects included in the Tfl Catalogue.
