The lineup of performers for the Soul Train Awards telecast Thanksgiving weekend is coming into place, with a slate that will include recent chart mainstays like Silk Sonic, Ari Lennox, Leon Bridges and Lucky Daye as well as two artists getting lifetime achievement awards at the ceremony, Maxwell and Ashanti.

The freestyling will take off from the late Aaliyah’s 20-year-old hit “Rock the Boat.” Former show host Erykah Badu started the Soul Cypher tradition.

For most of her career, North Carolina rapper Rapsody has been in quarantine. Neither individual virtuosity, nor cosigns from Jay-Z, Black Thought, and Kendrick Lamar, have ever brought her the reverence awarded to other avowed lyricists of her ilk. Signed to Roc Nation and 9th Wonder’s Jamla Records, Rapsody is not an underground legend or a best kept secret. She’s invisible.
That sidelining and her yearning to overcome it without hypersexualizing herself or abandoning her style have been a focal point of her music for years (often at...

Wale has paired up with singer-songwriter Jeremih for a brand new single, “On Chill,” which marks a listen from the rapper’s upcoming album. Wale previously worked with Jeremih on 2014’s “The Body” and song marks a reunion for the two. The slick track, produced by L.T. mOE and Va, centers on a tumultuous relationship, with the rapper singing, “We’ve been on a tragedy for months/Why can’t you agree with me for once/Maybe we can be on chill tonight/Maybe I can give you chills too.

Elle Varner sings to a python in the video for her new song, “Pour Me,” which features a guest appearance by Wale. She straddles a table, snuggling up to the yellow reptile in many scenes of the video, and the snake even slithers over to Wale for one of his raps. “Thinking ’bout you all night for sure, pour me one more,” she sings without missing a beat. The song will appear on her upcoming album, whose title is yet to be announced, due out this spring.

For many “Arthur” fans the 1996 animated children’s show was a part of their childhood, or in Stephen Colbert’s case: a show that he enjoyed with his kids. Now, the “Late Show” host is paying homage to the series by performing the “Believe in Yourself” theme song with original singer Ziggy Marley, Jon Batiste and Chance The Rapper in a delightful new video.
The clip begins with Colbert in his office and then hears Jon singing the words to the song. As they reminisce about watching the show, Colbert then takes his daytime nap and in his dreams performs a new version of “Believe in Yourself” with the trio.
Marley is seen playing the guitar alongside Batiste who plays the melodica. Chance the Rapper then joins by singing a couple of verses, while Colbert happily walks down an animated street and snaps pictures with a cartoon camera.

For the last few years, I’ve taken it upon myself in my capacity as Sos co-founder and eternal DJ to gather up some of my favorite tracks of the year, along with excerpts of dialogue and scoring from some of my favorite films (and, this year, TV series!) of the year, and cram it into a mix that could fit onto a hypothetical CD-r. But since this has been the year of the mixtape (hello Guardians of the Galaxy, Mommy, and Boyhood), and since there’s been such an overwhelming bounty of great music to choose from, I opted for a “C120″ format – two “sides,” one hour each. Since non-film music is the one area of pop culture Sound on Sight will (hopefully) never devote a subsection to, it’s the one instance I allow myself every year to flex my geekery in this area.

The big winner of last night's Soul Train Awards? Chris Brown. He took home three awards — all for various aspects of the song "Loyal" — and somehow managed not to horribly offend. (Though he is still terrible.) But who really cares about the awards? This year's ceremony was all about the reunions and surprise guest-filled tributes. It was all worth it just to see Lil' Kim. Here's a run-through of what happened last night. Let's start on a high note. The Kool and the Gang tribute felt like a wacky variety show, featuring the talents of Tamar Braxton, Joe, Mc Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Elle Varner, and Ma$e. Am I the only one who finds it exciting every time Ma$e randomly appears somewhere? (Video can be seen here, because Bet loves autoplay.) The other cool/kool thing that happened: Lil' Kim, Da Brat, and Missy Elliott performed 1996's “Not...

New York — Macklemore & Ryan Lewis aren't the only ones poppin' tags at thrift shops.
In light of the hip-hop duo's multiplatinum, No. 1 smash "Thrift Shop," musicians including Debbie Harry, Miguel and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder discuss their adventures buying used clothes, even after their careers took off.

Hard Times For A Rock Star
Debbie Harry loves to search for unique items at thrift shops, but sometimes the Blondie frontwoman had to do it because times were hard.
"At various times in my life (it has) been really necessarily to shop like that," she said in an interview.
Harry, 67, said she also hit up thrift shops to fuel her creativity when deciding what to wear to an event or photo shoot. Her favorite used item? A silver 1960s Betsey Johnson jumpsuit.

The stars were out last night at the Bet Awards to celebrate some of the biggest names in music. But there was not one person in the audience that didn’t get emotional during a 20-minute tribute to the late Whitney Houston, who died in February at age 48. Mariah Carey introduced Monica, who completely rocked a rendition of “I Love the Lord,” and then Brandy kicked off the party with “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Later Whitney’s mother, Cissy Houston, took the stage and we already felt the tears welling up in our eyes. We knew already to expect greatness from the soul and gospel singer as she began singing “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” She dedicated the song to her late daughter saying, “This is for you, Nip.” That’s when the tears really started to flow. A beautiful teary-eyed Beyoncé was caught on camera as well as Soulja Boy...
