Bill Maher celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on Friday during his Real Time on HBO – or, as he referred to it, “Alcoholic Christmas” – by bringing up the dangerous parallels between the religious hatreds that fueled politics in last century Ireland and the turmoil in today’s United States between Democrats and Republicans.
“You can’t think about the Irish without thinking about the division,” Maher said, harkening back to the violent rebellions that created a fractured society there. Now, the same level of intensity is bubbling between Democrats and Republicans here, he noted. “We used to pray for the nation. Now each side prays the other side doesn’t destroy the nation.”
Taking excerpts from a speech former President Donald Trump gave recently at the Cpac convention, Maher noted how it reflected an almost Biblical level of intensity about smiting the other side. It was “big talk from a guy...

Everything Everywhere All At Once is one of the best movies of 2022 and rightly hailed as a career coronation for its lead, Michelle Yeoh. But the performance of Ke Huy Quan as Waymond Wang is also extraordinary, especially considering he hadn’t acted in over two decades.
Quan quit acting due to the tenuous position of Asian performers in Hollywood but felt inspired to return after the runaway success of another film that starred Yeoh.
Still, the road to his casting in Everything Everywhere hinged on something he had no control over. Quan recently explained in an interview that the road to Waymond was paved with Andrew Yang memes.
‘Crazy Rich Asians’ convinced Ke Huy Quan to give acting another shot

CAA co-chairman and Scarlett Johansson’s agent Bryan Lourd issued a statement Friday in response to Disney’s harsh slam against the Black Widow actress in her breach of contact lawsuit versus the Burbank studio.
On Thursday, Disney shamed the two-time Oscar nominee by saying her lawsuit showed “callous disregard” for the pandemic — the latter of which has been the studio’s excuse for taking Black Widow day-and-date in theaters on and Disney+ Premier. Disney also outed her $20 million salary for the film, which it claims that coupled with the Disney+ monies of the MCU title “significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation.”
Below is Lourd’s statement:
I want to address the Walt Disney Company’s statement that was issued in response to the lawsuit filed against them yesterday by our client Scarlett Johansson. They have shamelessly and falsely accused Ms. Johansson of being insensitive to the global Covid pandemic,...

Like a reluctant swimmer dipping their toes in the water to check the temperature, New Yorkers cautiously returned to the movies today.
The capacity was restricted in the venues, and many did not sell popcorn or other concessions. Social distancing was observed, masks required, and everyone had that kind of nervous excitement that comes with doing something slightly forbidden.
Perhaps it was the presence of actor Liam Neeson, who planned to show up at theaters to greet returning fans for his film, The Marksman. He likely avoided telling them his trademark, “I will find you and I will kill you.” Or maybe it was the dance moves of mayoral candidate Andrew Yang, who boogied with delight upon scoring his tickets.
But overall, the mood, as seen by the online reactions, was akin to George Costanza’s reaction in a memorable episode of Seinfeld: “Reserved jubilation.”

New York City cinemas sprang back to life on Friday with moviegoers showing confidence in theater safety during Covid-19 and delight in being able to reconnect with a favorite form of entertainment.
At 25% capacity, it’s rough going but after a quiet start to the day many evening shows across the city were sold out, according to theater websites.
“Theaters are doing very well in the city, generally speaking, and Hollywood is going to be pleased on Monday,” said Joe Masher, president of NATO New York. “It’s a start. We have to start somewhere,” Masher said.
At the AMC Lincoln Square at 68th and Broadway Manhattanites Roy Cedillo and Benjamin Maddy awaited a screening of The Marksman. It’s their first theatrical foray since Covid and they’ve missed it. “We are three-time a-week movie people and it’s been a year.”

NYC Mayor candidate Andrew Yang hit the AMC Empire in Times Square early Friday, buying evening tickets for Eddie Huang’s Boogie and talking to a small group of press as cinemas around the city opened for the first time since last March.
“It’s a film set in New York and the filmmaker is Asian American and right now it seems like a time for us to be supporting Asian Americans. I also have a sense of just how difficult the film business is,” he said. “So supporting New York and an independent film that has very New York roots makes me very happy.”
“I think the reopening of movie theaters is a very powerful sign that we can do things that we used to do pre-Covid,” said Yang, who also ran in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary.
Yang volunteered that he’s a AMC Stubs member — the chain’s frequent moviegoer pass.

Julian Casablancas’ the Voidz brought their Hackers-ready “Alien Crime Lord” to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Thursday, performing the track on a set that recalled a Nineties garage from an MTV music video.
The song originally premiered via Grand Theft Auto, on Casablancas’ Online radio station, K.U.L.T. 99.1Fm Vespucci Beach Station “Low Power Beach Radio.” It was formally released on all platforms on December 15th. In true Voidz fashion, the singer’s instantly recognizable voice is obscured by tripped-out robot effects, electric guitars, and plenty of synths.

Maya Rudolph won Best Comedy Guest Actress for “Saturday Night Live” at the Creative Arts Emmys that aired on Saturday night, September 19, on Fxx. She won for playing Senator Kamala Harris in the episode hosted by fellow Emmy winner Eddie Murphy.
Voters probably considered all of Rudolph’s guest appearances as the California senator over the past season, but her official submission is the Murphy episode from December 2019 in which she appears briefly in the cold open, a parody of one of the Democratic debates. Near the end of the sketch, she walks onstage, martini in hand, to interrupt presidential candidate Andrew Yang (played Bowen Yang), lambaste America for withholding its donations from her, and remind us that Americans “could have had this bad bitch.” Rudolph also appears in a later sketch as the Murphy’s beleaguered wife while both of them struggle to deal with family during the holidays.

It’s been 25 years since John Leguizamo, Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes starred in the drag queen comedy “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.”
The actors were lauded back in the day because it was considered courageous for cisgender straight men to play out and proud gay queens.
Leguizamo now says if the film were made today, casting would look a lot different.
“I hope we’ve evolved from that,” Leguizamo says during a Zoom interview from his home in New York’s Catskills for Thursday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” “Obviously it should be that any actor can play anything, but … it doesn’t really work that way. Like white people should be able to play Latin people and Latin people should be able to play white people, but it doesn’t really work that way. It’s usually white males...

The nomination of Senator Kamala Harris as presidential nominee Joe Biden’s running mate was welcome news for many people, not the least of all Maya Rudolph. The “Saturday Night Live” alum was chosen to portray the former presidential candidate for the show’s send up of the Democratic primaries, appearing three times overall. Harris’s VP nomination means she’s likely found a steady gig, similar to Alec Baldwin’s Emmy-winning portrayal of Donald Trump, and her popularity helped her score a Best Comedy Guest Actress Emmy bid, her first for “SNL” since 2012. It’s one of three noms she received overall this year, including two in this category (she’s also contending for the third consecutive time for “The Good Place”) and one for her voice-over performance in “Big Mouth.”

Updated with Thursday details: The 2020 Democratic National Convention wraps four days of virtual party meetings, events and speeches Thursday night, when Joe Biden will formally accept the party’s presidential nomination in primetime.
The coronavirus pandemic scuttled plans for the usually in-person conventions for both Dems and Republicans (the latter have their convention next week); the election is November 3. In its place on the Dems’ side were a week of morning and afternoon meetings followed by a primetime block from 9-11 p.m. Et each night that features marquee speeches and musical performances including from Billie Eilish, John Legend and Jennifer Hudson.
Harris and former President Barack Obama fueled Wednesday night’s program, with Harris accepting the VP nomination to make history as the first woman of color to do so.

Joe Biden delivers the most important speech of his political career tonight on the finale of the Democratic Convention, but he’ll also have a bit of counter-programming by President Donald Trump.
In the hour before Biden delivers his acceptance speech, Trump is scheduled to be interviewed by Sean Hannity on Fox News’ Hannity, several hours after the president trekked to Biden’s childhood hometown of Scranton, Pa to give a speech.
The highlight of the Democratic Convention, to start at 9 Pm Et, will be Biden’s acceptance speech, and the campaign has given a hint of its tone with the theme of the evening, America’s Promise.
Also scheduled to give remarks are Biden’s children, Ashley and Hunter. The latter has been a low-key presence during the campaign, but was a target of Republicans during the Democrats’ impeachment hearings.

“Big Brother 22” fans on the West Coast were disappointed on Wednesday night when they went to play the new episode on their DVRs. CBS’s reality TV show was delayed approximately 20 minutes by the Democratic National Convention (DNC), which ran long due to speeches by Vice Presidential nominee Kamala Harris, former President Barack Obama, former Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and more. That means viewers didn’t get to see who won the Veto competition (it was Memphis Garrett) or whether David Alexander or Nicole Anthony were saved (they weren’t).
The bad news is that the same fate is likely to befall Thursday’s all-important live eviction episode. The good news is that there’s an obvious work-around. In addition to recording “Big Brother: All-Stars” at 8:00 p.m. Et/Pt, West Coast fans should adjust their DVR times to also record “Young Sheldon” at 9:00 and “The Unicorn” at 9:30 — just to be safe.

Exclusive: Former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg has signed with CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, which will work with him to amplify his series of public policy initiatives.
CAA and Brillstein represented Buttigieg in the deal for his next book, Trust: America’s Best Chance, which he announced on Wednesday. It will be published by Liveright Publishing on Oct. 6.
After his presidential campaign, Buttigieg formed a group called Win the Era, focusing on supporting and endorsing down ballot candidates and the next generation of leaders, with some emphasis on contenders in typically conservative areas.
CAA represents a number of political figures, and signed Andrew Yang and his wife, Evelyn, shortly after he dropped out of the race in February.
Buttigieg, who became an entertainment industry favorite in the lead up to the 2020 primary season, won the most delegates in the Iowa caucuses, and came in second to Bernie Sanders in the New Hampshire primary.

Bowen Yang misses everything about the “live” aspect of “Saturday Night Live.” “For the first ‘at home’ show, everyone in the cast was texting each other, and I sent pictures of the Saratoga Springs bottles that the pages have at their desks,” the 29-year-old comedian recalled recently over (what else?) Zoom from (where else?) his Brooklyn apartment. “It’s all the little things I took for granted … I would give anything to experience all that, safely, again.” Until then, he’s “dreaming in little Zoom boxes,” trying to stay creative and connected.
Though he feels nothing but lucky these days, sitting at home is a strange mode for Yang, who’s barely stopped moving over the past couple years. While writing for “SNL” in 2018, he was also shooting Awkwafina’s Comedy Central series (“Nora From Queens”), touring the country with his popular podcast (“Las Culturistas” with Matt Rogers) and writing...

The Anita Hill-led Hollywood Commission says that the problem of sexual harassment, abuse and bias in the entertainment industry hasn’t gone away away just because of the Covid-19 shutdown. In fact, it says the pandemic may “further stack the deck” against the industry’s most vulnerable.
“The Hollywood Commission was established to create an equitable future by defining and implementing best practices that eliminate sexual harassment and bias for all workers, especially marginalized communities,” the commission said Thursday in a statement on the pandemic. “Unfortunately, pandemics can further stack the deck against those populations most vulnerable in our economy. As new models of work emerge, there is likely to be a lasting impact on workplace issues in entertainment and beyond.

Director Jon M. Chu promises “In the Heights” will make its theatrical debut. Exactly when, of course, is another question as the coronavirus pandemic prompted Warner Bros. to hit the “pause” button on the film’s scheduled June 26 release indefinitely. Screenings of early cuts of the film had already begun when the pandemic broke.
“I hate the word ‘indefinitely’ because it’s sort of open-ended. We’re gonna have a date. It’s just about if we choose a date now, we’d probably have to shift it later. So, we’re not going to commit to one now,” Chu said on the “Variety After-Show.”
The film — starring Anthony Ramos — centers on the largely Hispanic neighborhood of Washington Heights in Manhattan and is based on a hit musical written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and book by Quiara Alegría Hudes.
“What we are committed to is, it’s going to be in a theater.

Washington — Andrew Yang has dropped out of the Democratic presidential primary, but his signature plan to give every American adult a $1,000 a month has never been more popular.
