Adrian Langley’s Locked in My House revolves around a dedicated social worker, Caris (Natalie Brown), who eagerly wanted to become a mother but failed to conceive naturally. In the end, Caris decided to go for IVF treatment so as to embrace motherhood. She chose Dr. Merrick (Damon Runyan), a renowned specialist in the field. However, Caris was unaware of the fact that Dr. Merrick had a history of sexual assault. Caris, who always stood up for what was right, spoke out when she found out the truth about him. But Caris wasn’t the only one suffering. Renee (Lora Burke), a reporter, had also been a victim of Dr. Merrick’s abuse. And Caris’ best friend, Julia (Lara Amersey), had a similar painful experience. Together, along with several other women who had suffered at the hands of Dr. Merrick, Renee, Caris, and Julia joined forces to expose Dr. Merrick.

In recent years there’s been a name associated with the horror genre that is guaranteed to get me excited… Lora Burke. From her absolutely amazing, captivating performance in Poor Agnes; to Justin McConnell’s 2018 sci-fi horror Lifechanger; to 2020’s amazing home invasion thriller For the Sake of Vicious, Burke has been one of the genres shining stars yet, for a lot of people, she’s something of an unknown. Hopefully Motherly, her Fourth stunning performance in a row, will change all that.

Lora Burke in Motherly
In a big, rambling house in the middle of nowhere, a mother, Kate (Lora Burke), and daughter, Beth (Tessa Kozma), have been sequestered away from the world, hidden because of a horror in their past. Beth is bored, stomping around the place, resentful because she’s been taken away from her friends and she can’t have a proper birthday party. Kate is trying to hold it together for both their sakes, but when she begins to suspect that someone is prowling around the house, she realises that their situation could be about to get a lot worse. With Motherly just released in US cinemas, I met up with Lora and director/co-writer Craig David Wallace to discuss it.

As many parents have learned over the past two years, being cooped up with a child is exceptionally stressful. We experience time differently when we’re younger so it’s understandable that they get frustrated, but that doesn’t make it any easier to handle, especially when they struggle to regulate their emotions and lash out at those around them. Kate (Lora Burke) and Beth (Tessa Kozma) are not living under lockdown conditions but they might as well be. Placed under witness protection in the aftermath of a violent incident at their home, they have been advised not to go anywhere. As Kate struggles to write a book about what happened, which might at least reduce the financial strain they’re under, Beth stomps around their remote country home, focused only on her own distress.

Taglines: "What would you do for your child?" Motherly was formerly titled Daughters. Now, Motherly is nearing completion, with Raven Banner Entertainment preparing to deliver the film worldwide. In the film, Kate (Lora Burke) and her nine year old daughter move into a farmhouse, just outside of town. Here, a couple invade their home, demanding answers to a still fresh murder. This title, from director Craig David Wallace (Todd and the Book of Pure Evil), also stars: Tessa Kozma ("My Paranormal Nightmare"), Kristen MacCulloch, Angel Gallego and several others. A preview of the film's story details and early promotional material are here. The concept poster shows Beth - with a fractured line. Representing an earlier victim, this graphic shows two characters in one. As well, the line represents a fractured family. We can tell it's been a long day when Romina (Lora Burke) gets home from the hospital where she works. All she wants to do is settle down with her son, who is being looked after elsewhere, and have a peaceful evening, but she's barely through the door before she realises that there's something very, very wrong. There's a man lying on the floor bleeding and crying out in pain. Then the perpetrator appears, seizing her to stifle her panic, and he's somebody she knows.
It's going to be a long night.
The set-up for Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen's latest film is fairly simple. Chris (Nick Smyth) has injured Alan (Colin Paradine), and wants Romina to keep him alive until he can finish extracting information. Whilst this goes strongly against Romina's instincts as a health and care professional (and human being), she can't bring herself to condemn Chris because she knows.

*full disclosure: access to the online Fantasia Film Festival was provided by the fine folks at the festival. Directors/writers: Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen. Cast: Lora Burke, Nick Smyth, Colin Paradine and T.J. Kennedy. For the Sake of Vicious had its World Premiere at this year's Fantasia Film Festival. A Canadian film, from filmmakers Gabriel Carrer (The Demolisher) and Reese Eveneshen (Defective), this indie title brings a biker gang into a tiny kitchen for a vigilante beatdown. Carrer's synth' score helps amplify some of the film's tension. Meanwhile, the pacing only takes off near the final half hour. In the meantime, the film's topic is a bit dire and early scenes are constrained by the simple setting. For the Sake of Vicious will entertain a few patient indie thriller fans out there. The story could have used a bit more meat on the bone. However, the film is centered...

Clapboard Jungle: Surviving The Independent Film Business
A couple of years ago, Justin McConnell took his highly distinctive horror film, Lifechanger, to Fantasia - we spoke to star Lora Burke about it. This year he’s back with a very different film – Clapboard Jungle, which is also set to screen at Frightfest. It’s a documentary about the film industry which loosely follows his journey in making and promoting Lifechanger, with lots of good advice for people at the start of their own filmmaking careers and an astounding number of big name interviewees, from Guillermo Del Toro to George Romero, Michael Biehn, Lloyd Kaufman and Fantasia’s own Mitch Davis. Shortly before all the chaos of the festival began, he and I connected and I asked him how much the film stemmed from his journey with Lifechanger or if it was a project he had felt drawn to separately from that.

"This is my house." Raven Banner has released an official promo trailer for a brutal Canadian action horror film titled For the Sake of Vicious, which is currently being sold at the (virtual) Cannes Market this summer. It hasn't premiered anywhere yet, but it looks like it will play very well at genre festivals this fall. The film is about a single mother who returns from a late shift on Halloween to find a maniac hiding out in her home with a hostage. But once she finds out what's going on, more people start to come to her home. Lora Burke stars, joined by Nick Smyth, Colin Paradine, and James Fler. Yow this looks extra violent and twisted. This is an intense, full-on red band trailer so watch out! There's no nudity, but it is extremely bloody and brutal. One of those home invasion horrors that flips and becomes a vengeance flick in the end.

The concept behind writer/director Justin McConnell's latest horror movie is fantastic: a guy with the ability to shapeshift by killing his victims, goes on a murderous spree in an attempt to rekindle a relationship with the woman he loves.
It seems that McConnell's Lifechanger does offer up a reason as to why the shapeshifter needs to change bodies so many times but it seems what's most notable of the movie is that at just shy of 90 minutes long, it moves quickly; "Even the gore is efficient."
Lifechanger stars Elitsa Bako, Lora Burke, Jack Foley, Sam James White, Steve Kasan, Bill Oberst Jr. and Rachel Vanduzer.

"In the quiet moments, my thoughts always turn to her." Uncork'd Entertainment has debuted a new trailer for an intriguing horror thriller titled Lifechanger, from Canadian filmmaker Justin McConnell. The film premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival earlier this year, and it's described as a horror thriller about a "murderous shapeshifter [who] sets out on a blood-soaked mission to make things right with the woman he loves." Though a different description says that he's "not so much a shapeshifter as a body thief", moving from body to body until it decomposes too much. The film stars Lora Burke, Jack Foley, Elitsa Bako, Rachel VanDuzer, Steve Kasan, Sam White, Peter Higginson, and Bill Oberst Jr. as the voice of Drew. This looks crazy gnarly, especially all the body switches and gore. Lifechanger is a Canadian film. You might not think Canada is best known for its horror movies but it’s delivered some very good ones and some very important ones. From Black Christmas to Cube to Backcountry to Prom Night, it’s a list that could go on and on.
The basic story here, like many movies, is at the surface, very simple. A ‘being’, not really human moves from body to body of its victims. It believes it has to kill to stay alive and these deaths become very frequent as the host body deteriorates. But entwined with this is a love story that has lasted beyond each human body. Okay, they may have sounded a little bit complicated but this is a surprisingly easy film to follow.

Lora Burke and Jack Foley in Lifechanger Photo: Fantasia Film Festival
Some films are more satisfying the less you know about what happens in them. After writing a very careful review of Lifechanger, which premièred at this year’s Fantasia film festival, I caught up with star Lora Burke for an equally careful chat. It was a year since we’d last spoken, when she’d recently completed work on Poor Agnes with Robert Notman, and she’d spoken briefly about this project then. I put it to her that one of the curious things about it is that she gets the most screentime even though she’s not the main character.
“Yeah,” she says. “We don’t really see Drew all that much, we hear from him. You know what? It was very much an ensemble piece. It was a big cast. I think it equally fell upon everyone’s shoulders.

To take Justin McConnell’s horror film Lifechanger at face value is a mistake. You won’t understand this truth right away, though, because it starts out being exactly what you thought. Emily Roberts (Elitsa Bako) awakens covered in blood next to an emaciated corpse as a man’s (Bill Oberst Jr.) voiceover is heard explaining the strange circumstances onscreen. He’s the character we’re seeing before us—a shape-shifter of sorts who must “take” the body (and memories) of another once his latest vessel succumbs to its slowly spreading rash of necrotic tissue. And he’s been doing it for God knows how long, each sojourn through the eyes of a stranger growing shorter as time carries him beyond old age. The need for metamorphosis has now become too abbreviated to sustain.
The first act is therefore rife with turnover as bodies start piling up when necessity renders safety obsolete.

Horror isn’t always machete-wielding maniacs or monsters or houses haunted by demons and ghosts. Sometimes it’s just two people in a room, one determined to hurt and humiliate the other. That’s the horror of Poor Agnes, director Navin Ramaswaran’s Canadian indie about the relationship that develops between a serial killer and her potential next victim.
Lora Burke gives a revelatory performance as Agnes, a single woman living out in the middle of nowhere with a predilection for murder. Mike, a private investigator, comes to the house half-heartedly checking into a missing persons case; before long, Agnes seduces him, has sex with him, and then abducts him, holding him prisoner and torturing him both physically and psychologically in an effort to completely break him down. The longer she keeps him in the house, the more their relationship begins to twist into something even more twisted and dark,...

Lora Burke and Robert Notman in Poor Agnes
The story of a serial killer and the strange bond she forms with the private detective who becomes her captive, Poor Agnes has been garnering rave reviews from festivals around the world, not least thanks to the talents of actors Lora Burke and Robert Notman. In the first part of our conversation about the film, they shared their thoughts on developing their characters and the chemistry that makes the film come to life. In part two, we began by talking about the relationship between the characters and the audience and why it mattered so much to show that they were both intelligent people.
"Agnes completely relies on her intelligence," observes Lora. "I mean, she uses her feminine wiles here and there, but speaking to Navin (Ramaswaran), our director, and James, our writer, I know it was important for them that they wanted...

Lora Burke and Robert Notman in Poor Agnes
One of the standout films of the year - and not just in the horror/psychological thriller genres, Poor Agnes is the story of a serial killer who holds a private eye hostage, intending to murder him. There have been any number of films about men holding women hostage, but somehow the gender reversal here gives the film a different cast, as does the strange way that a bond begins to form between the two characters. Lora Burke, who plays the titular Agnes, and Robert Notman, who plays Mike, her captive, met with me on Skype to discuss what the film meant to them.
Sometimes actors struggle with promoting their work, saying the same things over and over again and getting frustrated. These two, by contrast, are clearly still passionate about the film. I started out by asking them how they first got involved with it.
