Ah FrightFest how I love thee. Yes, my annual excursion to Scotland for Glasgow FrightFest continues this year, and I couldn’t be happier! This years line-up is strong, Very strong, with plenty of variety and some great film picks by Alan, Ian, Paul and Greg. Plus the appearance of Norwegian drama Hellsfjord! Of all the films showing this year there’s one that I most excited to see – Detention of the Dead… I’ve tried my hardest to cover the film as much as possible over the past year as it looks like my “cup of tea”, so for it to show at FrightFest is awesome (although to be fair I already knew that was in the line-up). However the real big surprise is the appearance of Neil Jordan’s Byzantium in the line-up – the Scottish crowd is notoriously “blood-thirtsy” so I hope Jordan’s film isn’t too sedate for the Glasgow crowd.

Victor Bariteau is the obsessive perfectionist, the mad artist with impossible dreams. His haunted house is an elaborate production. The end result is a one-night culmination of year-round planning and hours upon lonely hours in his workshop. As October 31st nears, he enlists and deploys friends and family in his campaign like a man who has read "The Art of War." His devotion to home haunting supersedes his day job in It, and sometimes even his family commitments. He yearns to take his hobby to a professional level, but is limited by the realities of his financial situation. [Continued ...]...

One of my favorite nights of the year, along with many horror fans, is Halloween. There is just something magical about the night. Granted, the whole month is great for horror fans because usually as a grown up that means we will be will be asked for movie advice or what to do in order to celebrate the month and Halloween. For eleven months out of the year, we may be looked at differently by the general public but for October we seemly feel that we become important. The American Scream is a documentary, which spans over the whole month of October, about three groups of home haunters build up their haunts and their props while trying to balance their normal lives. Home Haunters are a unique blend of people who love Halloween or maybe just the thrill that it gives them when they become a main focus for one...

'The American Scream' trailer: Get ready to fall even more in love with Halloween -- Exclusive Video
There is no finer sight for a trick-or-treater (or accompanying parent) than the neighborhood haunted house. Lots of folks these days hang a puffy spider or stick a witch in a tree or spread that cottony web across a front door. But the real heroes of Halloween are those who transform their humble abodes into something epically terrifying. The new documentary The American Scream, which premieres on the Chiller Network on Oct. 28 and is now playing in theaters in select cities, chronicles the herculean efforts of three passionate home haunters living within a stone’s throw of one another in an idyllic New England neighborhood.

With October on the horizon, as well as that glorious holiday there contained, many of us are gearing up for haunted house season. In many ways the last vestige of the roaming carnival days, companies come in every year, occupy some abandoned retail space, and commence with a nightly regimen of shrieks, jumps, and frights that carries us screaming into November. But what happens when those with the desire to create an effective spook house don’t have the benefit of such monstrous budgets? The more organic, love-labor-intensive community haunted houses are the results of an entire year’s worth of work by blue collar artists and their families. The process by which they transform their own homes into cathedrals to low-budget scares, called home haunts, is the subject of Michael Paul Stephenson’s (Best Worst Movie) latest documentary: The American Scream. A touching, fascinating, and deeply sincere testament to unflappable creative spark, The American Scream...

"When you are scared, you are most alive. People need that -- they need to feel alive." -- Victor Bariteau, The American Scream
Before sharing my views of the haunted house documentary The American Scream, I must provide two disclaimers. First of all, I've known producer Zack Carlson for several years through his roles at Alamo Drafthouse, which we discussed in a recent interview. Second, I've been involved in a local haunt Scare for A Cure for several years, although not this year. As a haunter, I am more aware of the inner workings of a haunted house and was fortunate enough to have grown up during an era where haunted houses were as common as Christmas decorations in our community. We knew which houses had the scariest scenes and the best candy selection as we did our Halloween night lap around the neighborhood.
If it appears that I can't...

Michael Paul Stephenson's first documentary, "Best Worst Movie," focused on the cult fascination with the cheesy '80s sequel "Troll 2," and unearthed the passion hiding beneath the admirers' histrionics. Stephenson's follow-up, "The American Scream," digs even deeper into the motivation behind absurd pastimes and finds a compelling encapsulation of blue-collar life. By portraying a group of "haunters," hobbyists who design haunted houses on Halloween, Stephenson draws a provocative connection between the holiday's encouragement of make-believe and the aspirational mindset associated with the American dream. Think "Death of a Salesman" with demons. The main subject of "The American Scream" is Victor Bariteau, an affable family man in sleepy Fairhaven, Massachusetts, whose modest, cubicle-centered life gets rejuvenated in the weeks leading up to the Halloween. Having designed haunted houses in his...

Let's get one universal truth out of the way up front: When you're a kid, Halloween is the best night of the year. Yeah, Christmas runs a close second, but Halloween is like Christmas with monsters and nothing beats that.
One of the things that makes Halloween so special is that crazy neighbor who, one night a year, goes out of his way to turn his suburban three-bedroom ranch house into a supremely scary, if somewhat tacky, haunted house. If you've ever wondered what motivates that guy, you need to see The American Scream, a wonderful new documentary that premiered at Fantastic Fest last night.
With The American Scream, drector Michael Stephenson, who previously gave us the fun Troll 2 doc Best Worst Movie, focuses his gaze on the hamlet of Fairview, Massachusetts, where he has discovered...
