20. Fruitvale Station – Ryan Coogler
Sundance has left a lasting impression this year. Among the lucky few who attended the world premiere of Ryan Coogler’s Grand Jury Prize winning debut feature in Park City, to say the least, I was completely blindsided by its overwhelming emotional power and distinguished empathy. Coogler’s fictionalization of Oscar Grant III’s last day before being murdered in cold blood by a Bay Area police officer breathes life back into the man – a father, lover, son, and former inmate – by all accounts accurately illustrating him with warmth and understanding of his sometimes fiery personality. With a promising young director behind the camera and a set of vibrant new talents before it in Michael B. Jordan’s wholly fleshed out depiction of Oscar and Melonie Diaz as his girlfriend and mother of their child, Fruitvale Station is a devastating and culturally crucial work. For the average person working a 9-to-5 job, the lives of struggling artists can be difficult to relate to. In Cutie and the Boxer, first time director Zachary Heinzerling gives us a fantastic insight into the lives of two ageing Japanese artists living in New York and we were delighted to speak to him and gain an even stronger understanding of the couple’s highs and lows.
The film – out in cinemas on November 1st – blends documentary and narrative styles to tell the story of Ushio and Noriko Shinohara. Ushio is relatively famous in America as well as his native Japan, but is still struggling to make money. The film truly succeeds though when it begins to focus more on his wife and begins animating her work to tell the story.
Congratulations on completing your first feature, how differently is the film being received by audiences in the UK and abroad?...

★★★★☆Observational documentary must, it seems, walk a perpetual tightrope; with its sights set on an elusive realism, there is always the danger of subjects that are unable to provide the desired naturalism when in front of a cameraman and crew. In the case of Zachary Heinzerling's fantastic new film, Cutie and the Boxer (2013), he has worked at building a rapport with Ushio and Noriko Shinohara over five years and it has paid dividends. The resulting piece, released in UK cinemas this week, is a exceptionally authentic and warm portrait of love and creativity amid the impoverished end of the New York art scene.

Marking itself as one of the most compelling regional documentary fests in the United States, the Camden International Film Festival, which takes place on the central Maine coast, has announced its 2013 program. Highlights among the fest's lineup include opening night film "Cutie and the Boxer" from Zachary Heinzerling and "Pandora's Promise," the festival's closing night film Robert Stone. "Cutie" tells the story of the courtship and present-day life of married artists Ushio and Noriko Shinohara; "Pandora's Promise" has reinvigorated discussion about the United States' pursuit of nuclear power. With a grant from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Ciff will host two special programs: "Then and Now pairs classic documentary films and filmmakers with new, visionary work from emerging non-fiction filmmakers. This program celebrates the current state of the documentary form by honoring its exceptional past and affirming its connections to the...

Title: Cutie and the Boxer Director: Zachary Heinzerling Winner of the director’s prize in the U.S. documentary competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Zachary Heinzerling’s “Cutie and the Boxer” is an engaging, playful and ultimately uplifting study of art and painting as refracted through the decades-long marriage of Ushio and Noriko Shinohara, Japanese-born artists living in New York City. In spotlighting the sweet-natured give-and-take of this relationship, the movie sidesteps doctrinaire concepts of nonfiction art films and expands its core audience, imparting glancing lessons about the uncertainty of love and the almost necessary dance of responsibility and care-taking involved. Ushio moved to the Big Apple in the late 1960s. [ Read More ]

Be on the lookout for a few can't-miss films this weekend. Zachary Heinzerling's Sundance documentary "Cutie and the Boxer," on famed Japenese artist couple Ushio and Noriko Shinohara, is receiving rave reviews for its humorous yet unsentimental portrayal of the creative passion that still burns late in life. David Lowery's slow-burn, Magic Hour-drenched Western, "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," stars a very good Rooney Mara, Ben Foster and Casey Affleck at the center of a love triangle in 1970s Texas. A past heist gone wrong has sent Affleck to jail, though he's determined to return to Mara and their young child he's never met. As they did out of Sundance, critics are still very positive on this film. Toh! will warn you to get out your hankies for "Lee Daniels' The Butler," the uplifting biopic of a black butler (played by Forest Whitaker) who begins his life on a...

Art, love, ambition and relationships are never an easy mix, but somehow, famed artists and married couple Ushio and Noriko Shinohara have made it work for 40 years. How? Well, Zachary Heinzerling's upcoming documentary “Cutie and the Boxer” dives right into the professional and personal connections that bond the pair, and with the movie headed to theaters, we've got an exclusive clip that shows the push and pull between these two very talented people. Combining candid scenes of the couple with archival material and animated sequences, the film details Ushio's preparation for his upcoming show against the the work of his wife Noriko, whose art is starting to get more recognition. And not just a portrait of two artists, the film is also a document of a particular sort of lifestyle that is becoming rarer in a continually gentrified New York City. "It...came from me having this romantic idea...

Despite director Zachary Heinzerling’s Emmy nominated resume work and the fact that he took part in New York Film Festival’s Emerging Visions program last year, Cutie and the Boxer was, for me, the biggest surprise to come out of Sundance this year. As a raw revelation of Ushio and Noriko Shinohara’s lasting relationship and their struggles to live through the returns of their artwork. Ushio has long been considered an outsider action artist known for his spontaneously punched-out boxing paintings, while Noriko harvests her personal life for the water-colored comics she creates in her own nook of their shared studio. Heinzerling depicts them with sharp-witted admiration, but never shys away from the flaws that fan the flames between them. In doing so, he took home the Directing Prize at Sundance where the film debuted earlier this year.

"It's not so easy to tame him in real life." Today's indie trailer is for a documentary that, on one hand looks totally awesome profiling a badass Japanese "boxing" abstract artist/painter, and on the other hand looks completely charming, profiling his wife of 40 years and her "cutie" illustrations. Starring artists Ushio & Noriko Shinohara, this doc is much more about exploring their "chaotic 40-year marriage" and how these two manage to work together and stay together, despite being so different. When I first heard about this, I brushed it off, but after watching the trailer it's now one of those must-see docs I'm hoping I can catch soon. Watch the official trailer for Zachary Heinzerling's doc Cutie and the Boxer, in high def from Apple: Once a rising star in the ‘70s New York art scene, 80-year-old "boxing" painter Ushio Shinohara hopes to reinvigorate his career as he preps for his latest show.

Back when Zachary Heinzerling's romance between a struggling painter and his wife debuted at Sundance in January, Indiewire was all over it. Eric Kohn called the film "a story about creative desire so strong it hurts," before bestowing an A-grade upon the much-loved festival favorite. He went on to predict "a healthy life on the festival circuit, particularly at documentary-specific gatherings," for the director's sophomore feature, "Cutie and the Boxer." Now the film has played at the Tribeca, San Francisco, Sydney, Nantucket, and Karlovy film festivals and is gearing up for its August 16 theatrical release date with its first trailer. The film focuses on the 40-year marriage between Ushio and Noriko Shinohara, the former a painter who uses boxing gloves to create some of his art and the latter his wife who hopes to establish an identity outside of her husband's work. With beautiful imagery of the already alluring art,...

Cutie and the Boxer functions as a love story about a couple and their devotion to their individual art. Zach Heinzerling’s directorial debut concerns itself with the difficulties of marriage, but also the trials of being an artist.
