Normally the first team eliminated on "The Amazing Race" ends up being pretty anonymous, because it's just too hard for producers to give quality time to so many players in a crowded premiere episode. Say what you want about All-Star seasons or the specific All-Stars this season, but very few people were ambivalent about Twinnies Natalie & Nadiya Anderson, who earned fans and haters alike for their first season, which included a contentious money incident, some smart U-Turn strategy and lots and lots and lots of yelling. On Sunday's "Amazing Race" premiere, though, only the yelling was in evidence and even that was half-hearted after a while. Natalie & Nadiya got an early advantage getting on the first of two flights to China, but struggles in a wedding district saw them fall from first to last. By the time they started bickering at the top of the Canton Tower over ferris wheel cars,...

Amazing Race 22 Preview
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Premieres February 17
Can The Amazing Race still be surprising? With the long-running reality competition entering its 22nd season, the chance for major changes seems unlikely. There will be unpredictable moments, but the overall structure remains the same. The producers have tried to throw in new twists to liven up the game, but they’re one-time events that rarely make a dent. For example, last season upped the ante to $2 million, but only for the team that won the opening leg. Once Abbie and Ryan left the game, that move disappeared from memory.
Even without structural changes, there’s still plenty to like with this show. It’s consistently entertaining and sends its 11 teams through difficult challenges all over the world. The set-up is so good that it’s impossible not to wish for the best from every season. So much...

The Amazing Race Review, Season 21, Episode 11,
“Take Down That Million”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
What truly makes a strong team on The Amazing Race? The obvious answer is athleticism, but plenty of powerful young pairs have left early. Scanning through the winners, most are capable at physical challenges but don’t always stand out as the team to beat. Two weeks ago, Abbie and Ryan were eliminated purposely by the others due to their status as a threat. This felt like the right move because Josh and Brent have struggled at many tasks. Even so, their ease at handling mental challenges made them a deceptive choice to keep afloat. Unlike a show like Survivor, it’s problematic to try and manipulate who sticks around because future legs are unknown. There’s no jury at the end to choose the most worthy player. Instead, all it takes is...

Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge pulled off a surprising upset in Sunday night's Amazing Race finale, winning the million dollar prize despite trailing the pack during much of the second half of the race, and narrowly avoiding elimination multiple times. ETonline catches up with the winners to talk about the finale and their perspective on the race.
ETonline: Congrats on winning. Do you feel like the ultimate underdogs?
Brent: We feel like a million bucks!
Josh: It was an amazing journey the entire race. Every leg of the way was a race for us. And it's kind of just surreal now that it's over. We never told a single person – we never told our family, we never told our parents, we never told any friends, or employees, or anyone the outcome. So it was so much to fun to have the people we love sort of watch the race in real time and run it...

Need proof that the only leg that matters is the final leg on The Amazing Race? The Fabulous Beekman Boys' Josh and Brent — who had finished second to last six times during season and never in the top two before the finale — defied the odds and a three-team alliance to win the $1 million. They are the third team to win the Race without winning a previous leg. "We were the underdogs, but we didn't give up no matter how bad things got," Josh tells TVGuide.com. "I think we earned the win." Nevertheless, given their low placements throughout the Race and the fact that they seemed ready to throw in the towel to save Abbie and Ryan in Amsterdam, some fans believe they're unworthy winners. Find out why they don't mind that label, what they're doing with the money and more.

Season 21 of "The Amazing Race" is coming to a close on Sunday (Dec. 9), and host Phil Keoghan promises a wild finale.
"The finale is an all-out sprint to the finish line!" Keoghan tells Zap2it. "It's pretty insane. We have a terrifying Houdini-inspired Roadblock in New York, where teams are hanging 15 stories above the Brooklyn Navy Yard...and much more.
"But it's not so much about the challenges that the teams will encounter in the final leg as it is about the mental stress that they have to endure. In the previous legs, the only thing they needed to worry about was not coming in last. Now, it's imperative that they come in first. No room for error."
But often in "Tar," teams have no control over the game -- such as the travel mishaps experienced by Abbie and Ryan, who were on track to be the Race's first $2 million winners.

This Sunday a new Amazing Race million-dollar winner will be crowned -- and the Beekman boys, Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, are telling all to Et about their thoughts going into the finale, how they helped to change the mind of one of their teammates, and details about their upcoming wedding.
ETonline: Congrats on making it to the finale in third place – did it give you an extra confidence boost to be in the top three going into the final?
Brent: It's always comforting to know that there's someone behind you as a buffer between you and the elimination, but we went into the Race knowing that most of the time Racers defeat themselves rather than other teams beating them, so we have always been more focused on the decisions we were making than what other teams are doing ahead of or behind us.

The Amazing Race Review, Season 21, Episode 10, “Not a Well-Rounded Athlete”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
One of the most exciting episodes of The Amazing Race typically happens right before the finale where four teams battle to make the last leg. That appears to be the likely scenario this week, but it’s really just setting the stage for the two-hour conclusion. There’s little at stake beyond placement, and a bunching flight brings everyone close together. Even so, there’s plenty of fun within the challenges to keep it enjoyable. The teams fly to Barcelona and take an overnight ferry to the island of Mallorca, the home of Rafael Nadal. It’s interesting to note the significant gap at the start, which puts each pair on a different flight. Josh and Brent begin about seven hours after Natalie and Nadiya yet finally catch up due to the ferry’s late starting time.

So long, Ryan & Abbie. We'll always remember you as the team too generic to generate a nickname.
Previously on The Amazing Race, teams traveled from Moscow to Amsterdam. Natalie & Nadiya launched their careers as supervillains, hatching a dastardly scheme to ensure Ryan & Abbie's Philimination and winning the Leg via Fast Forward before some teams had even left Moscow. Jaymes & James wrestled with their consciences (sadly neither nudity nor oil were involved) and carried out their part in the twins' plan by U-Turning Team No-Nickname before finishing 2nd. Trey & Lexi sealed the deal and took 3rd place by U-Turning Team Chippendale and foreclosing Ryan & Abbie's only opportunity. Not that it mattered since not one but two blown connections out of Germany broke the team, leading them back into their baffling Beekman Boys bond. The teams raced together until the U-Turn perfidy was discovered. Josh seriously considered sticking with the...

In order to make it home for Sunday night's installment of "The Amazing Race," I had to make a tight flight connection at a German airport, sweating it out through international customs and racing across terminals to catch my Lufthansa plane. In that respect, I understand what "Amazing Race" contestants Abbie Ginsberg and Ryan Danz were going through. The key difference: I made it to my gate and my plane departed successfully, which allowed me to watch Abbie & Ryan struggle in a German airport for the second time in three weeks, as travel inconveniences and a U-Turn by...

When did The Amazing Race become Survivor? The leading teams basically voted Abbie and Ryan out by removing the “double” part of the Double U-Turn. While losing an arrogant team usually is refreshing, they still get a raw deal. Even without the flight delays, there is little chance that Abbie and Ryan could survive. Jaymes and James do the official U-Turn on them, but it’s really Trey and Lexi that seal the deal. Instead of picking the goat farmers or skipping it, they purposely choose a team ahead of them. It’s a smart plan that removes a strong team, yet it still leaves a hollow feeling. Blaming the players isn’t fair since they’re just using the devices put in place by the producers. They want to create inter-team drama and aren...

There will be no $2 million winner on The Amazing Race this season. The CBS reality competition introduced a twist this go-round whereby the team that won the first leg would take home double the usual prize of $1 million if they also won the race. But that team -- the "dating divorcees" duo of Abbie Ginsberg, 31, and Ryan Danz, 35 -- was eliminated in Sunday night's episode after getting stuck in the Frankfurt airport during a layover from Moscow to Amsterdam. (Their first plane out was delayed, while the second experienced technical difficulties and all the passengers were forced

Abbie and Ryan probably won't be traveling through Frankfurt any time soon — or its airport at least. Two weeks after missing a connecting flight there on The Amazing Race, double bad luck struck again when a ticket agent refused to allow the two to board their connecting flight and their backup connection had mechanical trouble. To top it off, the Chippendales, Jaymes and James, U-Turned them as part of a pact with Natalie and Nadiya, and Trey and Lexi. "We were dead men walking," Ryan tells TVGuide.com. "There was no way we were going to be safe unless it was a non-elimination." See what else the couple, who were the first team ever racing for $2 million, has to say about their "rough" couple of legs, working with Josh and Brent, and if they're really mad at the Chippendales.

It was game over for Abbie Ginsberg and Ryan Danz on Sunday night's episode of The Amazing Race after the Chippendales U-Turned them.
"It's part of the game," Abbie reacts in an interview with ETonline. "When you get down to five teams, you have to do what's best for your survival. We would have used it. We don't fault the other teams. We were surprised it was who it was out of the teams left. We had built a friendly alliance with the Chips since day one."

Ryan concurs about the deceitful gesture, recalling that the Chippendales (Jaymes Vaughan and James Davis) had given them a big greeting, saying, "We can breathe again," when, to their relief, the two teams reunited after not seeing one another for several legs. The Amazing Race has become fairly predictable thanks to the massive separation between the top three teams and the bottom two. This week the teams head to Amsterdam on five different flights and, thanks to a truly evil yet genius plan devised by the top three teams, Abbie and Ryan get royally screwed. It doesn't help that they foolishly decide to return to the Frankfurt Airport, the worst place in the entire world.

Last week’s episode concluded with three teams still trying to finish the leg. Brent was having no luck in the pool, and James and Abba were standing dumbfounded at the mat without a passport. The rockers try to stay positive, but this feels like a case where the editors are creating tension where it doesn’t exist. Meanwhile, Josh and Brent take one last shot at the Detour and aren’t getting any leeway from the judge. They take the four-hour penalty and move on to the Roadblock with Abbie and Ryan. “Off to See the Wizard”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
One of the most exciting parts about The Amazing Race is how unpredictable events can completely change the game. Although teams are competing in designed challenges, there is no definite way to avoid chaos. There have been extreme cases in the past, especially in the All-Star season where the next leg began while others were still competing in the previous one. That may be the case again here because of several factors. First of all, a delayed flight strands Abbie and Ryan and Josh and Brent overnight in the Frankfurt airport. They finally arrive at Moscow while several others are finishing. The unnecessary gamble to choose a faster flight with a one-hour layover costs them. When they miss the connection, both pairs have no choice but to wait a long time. Even...

In a fast-paced competition like The Amazing Race, conventional wisdom might suggest that it’s wise to avoid getting stuck with the pack. However, the chaos and confusion actually make this false thinking in most cases. Teams that believe they can outperform the others in challenges should want to stay with the group. This approach ensures that they’re following the right path and aren’t venturing into unknown territory. There are rare exceptions where a team is so powerful that they can grab a big lead and force others to follow. Season five’s Colin and Christie are a good example of this approach. They realized that few teams could stay with them and took charge to win most of the legs. On the other hand, there are less skillful players that...

It’s time for killer fatigue! There’s only so long that teams can deal with limited sleep, intense stress, and small quantities of food before they start dropping. When these factors are added to excessive heat and grueling challenges, the likelihood of a breakdown only grows. Players start making mistakes and have trouble with tasks they would normally complete without a hitch. With only seven teams remaining, this also felt like the right time for a non-elimination leg. The tasks are usually more physically demanding in those instances to keep the excitement high. If no one’s going to exit, the producers don’t want viewers throwing up their hands in disgust. Despite the lack of a departing pair, this week remains exciting because of the higher difficulty level. Bangladesh is not an easy place to navigate,...

The Amazing Race Review, Season 21, Episode 4, “Funky Monkey”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
A common question among long-time fans of The Amazing Race asks why the later seasons feel so different. Along with a faster-paced editing and more gimmicks, the main changes have involved the casting. The producers look more for characters of a specific type than the “regular people” approach of the early years. These contestants are frequently recruited and don’t always understand the show. This leads to a lot of mistakes and manufactured drama, but that doesn’t mean it’s a better series. Ardent fans usually wish for more applicants who love the show in place of over-the-top characters. The tricky part is that super fans aren’t always more interesting contestants. While the general concept is positive, this move can backfire and lead to inept and dull racers. Viewers may hate a crazy team,...

In a disappointing turn of events for Amazing Race devotees, superfans Will Chiola and Gary Wojnar were eliminated on Sunday night after falling behind in a bus-spackling challenge. The substitute teachers and best friends routinely finished toward the back of the pack, but never lacked for heart right up until the end of their Amazing Race journey in Bangladesh. Et catches up with the duo to get their take on their ouster.
ETonline: As fans of the show, how did that impact how you approached the race?
Will: We wanted to represent the fans and go as far as we could in the race. We've seen almost every episode. You never know exactly what to expect, you never know what to plan for. Ultimately, we felt like we let 'em down. We let our fans down. We're still in shock over being eliminated. Until we actually see it, we can't grasp the fact that we're no longer...

“There’s No Crying in Baseball”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
In the current era of The Amazing Race, the producers have used two primary tactics to generate tension. The first move is casting volatile teams like Brendon and Rachel from last season that create drama with their mere presence. This has been a more common strategy in recent installments. In cases where the cast is generally likable like this year, precise game design is a necessity to avoid watching congenial teams meekly depart each week. If there was more drama among the teams this year, it’s guaranteed the editors would make a big deal about the infractions. Since that isn’t possible so far, an old-school approach is needed to set up an exciting conclusion. There are plenty of different ways the producers can try to influence the race, and...

Caitlin & Brittany (Team Blonde)
In the second Leg of The Amazing Race 21, ten teams flew from Shanghai to Indonesia where they witnessed some bullsh-...uh, bull racing, lured innocent children onto their adongadongs and chose between hauling ice and sorting fish. Twins Natalie & Nadiya served fishy realness at the market and claimed first place along with the Express Pass, which will allow them to skip a task later in the Race. Rob & Kelley were thoroughly unpleasant to everyone and so of course made it through to the next Leg. Team Gay remains at full strength with the Beekmans going from seventh to fifth and Team Chippendale jumping all the way from last to third. Gary & Will were the first team to threaten to quit... but didn't quit hard enough, coming in at ninth and causing Amy & Daniel to be Philiminated.

The Amazing Race Review, Season 21, Episode 2
“Long Hair, Don’t Care”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
When it comes to analyzing episodes of The Amazing Race, it’s sometimes difficult to distinguish between poor game design and an undesirable result. The producers are blamed when they make it too easy for a likable team, but they face criticism when bad luck dooms that pair. It’s true that a bad taxi driver is the reason for Amy and Daniel’s surprise exit. However, plenty of other teams did locate the destination, so the task isn’t unfairly challenging. Chance has been a part of the game since the first season and has doomed plenty of capable teams. The ones who survive this type of obstacle are quick to recognize the situation early before it’s too late. Their fate also offers a clear reminder of how important luck is to this competition.

A familiar foe struck again on The Amazing Race: bad taxi luck. After leaving the Roadblock in second place, snowboarders Amy and Daniel spent the rest of the leg aimlessly driving around Indonesia — in three cabs — putting them dead last. "We were crossing our fingers and hoping it was a non-elimination round," Amy, the show's first double-amputee Racer, tells TVGuide.com. "We couldn't lose all hope until we actually got to the mat and heard what Phil had to say." How long did were they lost for? And do they regret telling Abbie and Ryan the clue in the first leg? Find out below!

The heat is on for our ten remaining teams on cycle 21 of The Amazing Race. After losing Rob & Shela in Shanghai, the clue reveals that the duos will next be headed to Surabaya, Indonesia, to the Alun Alun Stadium for their next clue. Abbie & Ryan will get a bit of a head start the next morning as the winners of the first leg. Not that the head start matters much when the first thing on tap is a flight - most everyone gets to the airport at the same time. At the airport, Rob & Kelley think they're onto something when they book a flight that goes to Surabaya via Hong Kong. However, everyone else manages to get a direct flight to Jakarta, without the four-hour layover that the Hong Kong flight has. Rob & Kelley think that maybe they're in the lead because of their choice, but they can't really be...

In the opening Leg of The Amazing Race 21, eleven teams of two flew to China to battle ping pong prodigies and force-feed frog fallopian tubes in their quest to be eligible to double the grand prize for winning the Race. Amy & Daniel foolishly tipped off Abbie & Ryan to the location of Mildred the albacock uccobus abacus lady and were sniped out of their shot at a double payday. Josh & Brent from Team Gay bickered but managed to luck into a seventh place finish and Jaymes, Team Gay's third member, barely survived, finishing in tenth with partner James. Philiminated were Rob & Sheila, gone before I made even a single Monty Python “He's a lumberjack and he's Ok” joke.

14. No Good Deed Goes Unpunished Award: On The Amazing Race premiere, Amy, a double-amputee, and Daniel are on their way to a first-place finish and a $1 million bonus (the team that wins the first and last legs will win $2 million) when Daniel decides to tell Abbie and Ryan where the final clue is — "because that's just the type of guy he is," according to Amy. There is no karma for their good deed: Abbie and Ryan overtake them on the sprint to the Pit Stop and are now the ones eligible for the bonus. Guys, whatever happened to the...

The Amazing Race, Season 21, Episode 1, “Double Your Money”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
The Amazing Race premiere offers so many possibilities for the upcoming season. There are 22 new players to meet and lots of unknown challenges ahead. The potential is exciting, but it can lead to information overload because so much is happening. This isn’t the type of show that takes its time and clearly introduces its cast. Once the action gets rolling, it’s easy to forget which Chippendale spells his name “Jaymes” instead of “James”. This material demands an extended premiere so it can breathe and start on the right foot. Showcasing Phil’s introduction, 11 teams, and a complete leg in the regular hour is difficult to say the least. Survivor has the luxury of ignoring certain players who aren’t pivotal to the game. That doesn’t really work in this case. Even a...

Chippendales represents on the latest season of "The Amazing Race" with teammates James and Jaymes. While they had a strong showing throughout the episode, they nearly got eliminated when they couldn't find a woman with an abacus. In fact, the team that won this leg -- and thus a chance at $2 million instead of the usual $1 million -- couldn't find her either.
Perhaps not enough people know what an abacus is anymore.
Nevertheless, Amy & Daniel found her right off the bat, and then proceeded to tell Abbie & Ryan where she was when asked. Then, in the foot race to the pit stop immediately thereafter, Abbie & Ryan flew past them. This could very well be because Amy was running on two prosthetics -- her lower legs and feet are both artificial.
James and Jaymes also had to be told where the woman was, as did several teams. Considering all they had to do was find her,...
