Utopia is the follow-up to Scott’s 2018 album, Astroworld, and arrives as Scott’s first full-length since the crowd crush at his 2021 Astroworld music festival that left 10 people dead and thousands more injured. One week after Live Nation insisted that Travis Scott’s Utopia concert at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt had not been canceled — despite numerous local news outlets reporting otherwise — Live Nation Middle East has confirmed that the July 28 show is, in fact, canceled.
“We regret to inform you that the Utopia show, originally scheduled for July 28th at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt is cancelled,” the concert promoter said in a statement on Twitter. “Unfortunately, despite highest efforts, complex production issues meant that the show could not be constructed in the desert.

Almost two years ago, rapper Travis Scott and the entertainment company A24 revealed they were working together on a mysterious project – and they made this revelation by sharing a picture of a script that had blood and coffee stains on it, with the title obscured. Now we know that Scott has actually worked with A24 on two separate feature films that we’re going to be seeing very soon. One of those projects is called Circus Maximus, which Scott directed alongside the likes of Harmony Korine (Kids), Gaspar Noé (Irreversible), Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive), Valdimar Jóhannsson (Lamb), and music video director Kahlil Joseph. You can watch the trailer for it in the embed above.

Today brought confirmation of our exclusive news that Harmony Korine had directed Travis Scott in a new feature, the 80-minute Aggro Dr1ft. But Scott’s also just announced Circus Maximus, a companion to his album Utopia that will release on Thursday, with AMC listing its runtime as 75 minutes. The real kicker (unless you’re one of those sick runtime fetishists) is its directorial lineup: joining Scott behind the camera are Korine, Gaspar Noé, Nicolas Winding Refn, Valdimar Jóhannsson (Lamb), and music-video maestro Kahlil Joseph.
Being that it’s tied to Scott’s album Utopia, one can infer this takes the visual album approached recently popularized by the likes of Frank Ocean, Beyoncé (Knowles), and Solange (Knowles)––a project doubly suggested by this official synopsis:

The star of the 2023 Oscar season was “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” but you could be forgiven for thinking it was A24. The company picked up nine Oscars at the ceremony and there wasn’t a safe commercial bet among them.
On top of launching the zany ambition of “Everything Everywhere” into a $107 million worldwide gross, A24 also scored two Oscars for Darren Aronofsky’s divisive “The Whale,” which sneaked its way past $35 million accumulated over a gradual release plan. Its nominees also included two Cannes acquisitions, Best International Feature Film nominee “Close” and “Aftersun,” which secured a Best Actor nomination for Paul Mescal and solidified his stardom. Despite the blockbuster successes of “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” in 2022, the year’s big winner was a company that didn’t exist when these franchises were born.

Blonde cinematographer Chayse Irvin has been left scratching his head over his Marilyn Monroe film that launched with a 14-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, only to run into a buzzsaw of criticism for apparently exploiting the suffering of the screen icon, played by Ana de Armas.
Irvin tells The Hollywood Reporter that Blonde — as it graphically depicts the abuse and trauma inflicted on Monroe from her troubled childhood to a shock death at age 36 — was never intended as a celebratory biopic many may have expected.
Instead, Irvin and director Andrew Dominik deliberately set out with woozy imagery, alternating use of digital color and monochrome, varied aspect ratios and horror movie tropes to remain true to Joyce Carol Oates’ dream-like novel where, fusing fact and fiction, Monroe steadily spirals into despair.

Many filmmakers have tried their hand at fine arts (and vice versa), but it’s rare to see an art exhibition adapted into a feature film. But that could be changing soon, as A24 has announced that it is teaming up with filmmaker and multimedia artist Kahlil Joseph on a film adaptation of his acclaimed installation “Blknws.” Though Joseph has received critical acclaim for his short films and art exhibitions, this will mark his feature directorial debut.
“Blknws” was an immersive, fictional newscast that satirized America’s “news-creation industrial complex.” Through a combination of original content and aggregated news footage, it imagined what a cable news network run from a Black perspective would look like. An official press release for the installation described it as “a fugitive newscast that rejuvenates what news can be, ‘Blknws’ aims to become a bona fide news network that can only be accessed at specific terrestrial sites.

Filmmaker, music video director, and video artist Kahlil Joseph is set to make his feature directorial debut with Blknws® – The Feature Film (working title), an adaptation of of his video exhibition of the same name for Participant and A24.
Blknws® is described by the art exhibition curator Los Angeles Nomadic Division as “a ‘conceptual news program’, or ‘conceptual journalism,’ that is simultaneously a work of art as well as a media entity. It takes the form of a two-channel installation connected to a newscast that blurs the lines between art, reporting, entrepreneurship, and cultural critique.

It’s been a long journey for Barry Jenkins, from his humble debut “Medicine for Melancholy” in 2008 to eventual Oscar winner “Moonlight” eight years later and the sprawling miniseries adaptation “The Underground Railroad” earlier this year. All along, though, there has been one constant for him: The Telluride Film Festival. Jenkins first attended the festival as a film student almost 20 years ago and eventually became a volunteer, then rose through the programming ranks to oversee the shorts program, a gig he maintained even after his career took off.
Now, he’s leveled up again in Telluride stature by serving as the festival’s guest director.
Over the course of this year’s five-day event, Jenkins will introduce six screenings of films handpicked by a director best known for blending his passionate cinephilia with underrepresented voices. His program does that, too: While Jenkins’ favorite director Claire Denis is represented with her debut “Chocolat,...

Not content with being the world’s most celebrated pop star, Beyoncé is emerging as a major figure in cinema too
Back in 2002, 20-year-old Beyoncé was appearing as Austin Powers’s love interest in Goldmember. She’s come some way since. In fact, as her visual album Black Is King drops, it’s safe to say that Beyoncé is now not just one of the biggest pop stars on the planet but one of the most significant film-makers too. Perhaps that hasn’t been recognised up to now due to her collaborative approach, which doesn’t fit into familiar “auteur” boxes, or because her visual work is not narrative-led, or presented through the usual cinematic channels, but as well as music, it’s clear Beyoncé has significant clout in film these days.
Exhibit A would be her outstanding Lemonade visual album of 2016. The film fused an array of influences – from...

Black Is King (Beyoncé)
Four years ago, Beyoncé dropped the film version of Lemonade, which brought together directors Kahlil Joseph, Jonas Åkerlund, Mark Romanek, Melina Matsoukas, and more to deliver a visual album that, like many of her works, had an immense cultural impact. She is now returning with Black Is King, a film in production for an entire year that reimagines the tale of The Lion King through the perspective of the Black experience. Now available on Disney+, we imagine it’ll be the most-watched film of the weekend.

The Notebook is covering Tiff with an on-going correspondence between critics Fernando F. Croce, Kelley Dong, and editor Daniel Kasman.WavesDear Danny and Fern, Maybe I should admit now that this year's festival has been fully filtered through the fact that only a day before it began, I finally saw Brian De Palma's Carlito's Way (1993). The Bronx-set film, which follows reformed gangster Carlito Brigante (Al Pacino) and his dream of love and freedom, is a wrenching double exposure: Thrashing scenes of gunfights and shady deals lose their opacity beneath the romance of Carlito and his lover Gail (Penelope Ann Miller), who are saving up to afford a future together. But soon worlds clash, and a decision must be made fast; between the two frames, one of love and another of death, where shall Carlito go? How kind it is that De Palma takes the position of a real friend,...

The Emmys are looking like the Grammys this year — at least in the Best Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) category. Last week, Beyonce released her concert film “Homecoming” on Netflix, giving the streaming service a third Emmy contender from a massive music star. Its first two, lest we forget, are Bruce Springsteen‘s “Springsteen on Broadway” and Taylor Swift‘s “Reputation Stadium Tour” concert film. Will this category come down to who was literally music to voters’ ears?
Of the trio — who have 53 Grammys between them — only Swift has won an Emmy before, taking home Best Original Interactive Program for “Amex Unstaged: Taylor Swift Experience” in 2015. However, that was a juried category (YouTube’s “Emma Approved” also won), so that means Swift has yet to win a competitive Emmy race. “Reputation,” which dropped on New Year’s Eve on Netflix, is arguably the least hyped about of these three films at the moment,...

Even if you’ve only seen the “BlacKkKlansman” trailer, you know there is an aspect of the film that screams 1970s. From the music to the clothes and hair, to grounding the audience in what it feels like to get swept up the Black Empowerment movement of the time, Spike Lee’s latest film brings the period to life.
In that sense, it should come as no surprise that the movie was shot on 35mm film stock. The conventional wisdom is that shooting on celluloid serves as an instant reference to the feel of films from that era, but that wasn’t the idea here. Cinematographer Chayse Irvin, who worked with Lee for the first time here, tested a number of different formats for the project. He rejected the association between 35mm and any moment in time.
