The longevity of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" has been fascinating to behold. Beginning on Minnesota public access television in 1988, Joel Hodgson's watch-bad-movies-with-sarcastic-buddies cult TV series has deeply entrenched itself into the collected Jungian lore of every Gen-Xer worth their weight in flannel. For much of its life, "MST3K" lived either on Ktma in Minneapolis or, when it became more successful, running at midnight on Comedy Central.
Throughout, the show famously included the phrase "Keep circulating the tapes" in its credits. That was an acknowledgement from the show's producers that world-of-mouth and shared VHS recordings of "MST3K" were responsible for its modest cultural foothold. Fans would call friends, mail them cassettes, and implore that the cult grow. In 2008, when "MST3K" was finally made widely available through DVD box sets, Dr. Forrester/Crow T. Robot actor Trace Beaulieu said in an Av Club interview to "Keep circulating some of the tapes.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 season 13 officially premiered on May 6, but Kickstarter backers were given early access to the first episode, “Santo in the Treasure of Dracula,” on March 4. The live event, the first hosted by MST3K’s own app, the Gizmoplex, opened with 20 minutes of technical difficulties. A black screen with a white dot sporadically gave updates as the audience waited. Once the movie started, there was terrible sound quality. The end credits weren’t done yet, either.
And it was the most fun MST3K has been in a long time.
Everyone behind the scenes seemed to feel it too – the adrenaline of a near-disaster. The live post-show chat was filled with jokes about the difficulties of getting the episode to air, with the production team reveling in the mishaps and the occasionally jury-rigged solutions to their newly pared-down budget.

We’ve got movie sign: Some three years after Netflix canceled the revival of “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” the cult classic is back. As was the case with the series’ streaming return in 2017, the fans were instrumental, with creator Joel Hodgson once more turning to Kickstarter to gauge just how badly MSTies (as they prefer to be called) wanted more episodes of movie riffing.
Very badly, as it turns out: The crowdfunding effort netted a whopping 6.5 million, hitting its initial 2 million benchmark in a single day. Enter The Gizmoplex, an online one-stop shop for the new, 13th season of the show, along with classic episodes, live events, fresh shorts, Easter eggs, and all manner of special content for subscribers — all wrapped up in an interface inspired by vintage point-and-click adventure games.

The 11th and 12th seasons of "Mystery Science Theater 3000," now available on Netflix, were a reboot of the series wherein the premise was kept in tact -- a space-bound blue collar prisoner is forced to watch, and joke about, extremely bad movies by a pair of mad scientists -- but the setting and the cast changed. Jonah Ray was now the central host of the show, the voices of the robots were replaced by a new team of comedians (Baron Vaughn and Hampton Yount), and the mad scientists (Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt) were the children of the original mad...

“Mystery Science Theater 3000” is returning for a 13th season, this time on a new indie streaming platform, Gizmoplex.
Created by Joel Hodgson in 1988, the cult show “MST3K” follows a series of ordinary humans captured by mad scientists who subject them to a series of terrible B-movies. To keep their sanity, the humans create a series of companion robots to riff on the films they watch, which are presented on the show in their entirety. “MST3K” has gone through several iterations, initially airing on Ktma-tv Minneapolis, then on Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi channel, for a total of 10 seasons. It was revived for a two season run on Netflix in 2017. The show has been highly acclaimed since its creation, winning a Peabody in 1993, and has helped turn seberal obscure movies into cult classics, such as “Manos: The Hands of Fate.”

We’ve got movie sign!
Well, almost. Mystery Science Theater 3000 season 13 debuts at 8 pm Est on Friday, March 4th! But it’s going to look a little different this time, and not just because the beloved comedy series won’t be on the cable channels it called home from 1989-1999. Nor will it be on Netflix, like seasons 11 and 12.
No, season 13 will be streaming on the Gizmoplex, a streaming service designed especially for MST3K. Series creator Joel Hodgson announced the Gizmoplex at the start of the “Make More MST3K” Kickstarter from last year. According to Hodgson, Gizmoplex will serve as a home for all things MST3K. That’s where you’ll find not only Season 13 episodes, including Gamera vs. Jiger and the dreaded Munchie, but also all available episodes from previous seasons.
Although you can access the site today – or download apps for Apple, Android, and Roku...

Mystery Science Theater 3000’s Turkey Day isn’t just an annual marathon of classic episodes to sit back and watch on Thanksgiving. Depending on the timing, fans watch it hoping to see some kind of news. In this era when MST3K’s always in flux, viewers have their fingers crossed that we’re going to see some kind of look into the future of the franchise. Luckily, Turkey Day 2021 gave us plenty to sink our teeth into.
To get us back up to speed, after years of being off TV, a Kickstarter campaign started up in 2015 and successfully brought MST3K back for an eleventh season on Netflix for 2017. It ran for fourteen episodes and while the new cast needed some time to figure themselves out, it had plenty of high notes. Then things seemed to wither before it had a chance to soar.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, we all have our non-eating traditions. Many like to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade or check out a game or two of football. For many a geek, Thanksgiving is a day that lets us sit back and watch a whole lot of Mystery Science Theater 3000. It’s part of the show’s DNA. The first episode debuted back on Thanksgiving in 1988. Then the idea of a Thanksgiving marathon became a regular part of Comedy Central’s calendar. Years later, MST3K episodes would be spread through Thanksgiving whether or not there was any news on new seasons being in the works.
Luckily, this is one of those years where there’s a new season in the works! As we await MST3K Season 13, we’ll get another MST3K Turkey Day on our plate to enjoy. On November 25, starting at 9am Et, we’re getting eight classic episodes.

“Mystery Science Theater 3000” is coming back strong.
The beloved cult series will be back with more original episodes and a custom online distribution platform thanks to another successful Kickstarter campaign. The campaign, which concluded May 7 after 30 days, raised over $6.5 million with over 36,000 backers.
Series creator Joel Hodgson will use the money to fund 13 new episodes, including the show’s first 3-D episode, 12 new short film riffs, a holiday special that will feature Hodgson, Jonah Ray and Emily Marsh as co-hosts, and to build The Gizmoplex, new virtual theater and online community hub that will be the exclusive home of the next season for its initial run.
Each new episode will be released one at a time as they are ready for release, rather than holding them until the entire season is complete. The Gizmoplex is also expected to host live episode premieres, watch parties, and special events. The most...

A few years ago, Mystery Science Theater 3000 made its grand return. Through an incredibly successful Kickstarter, they raised enough money and showed proof of enough fan interest to get the show back with a new season. Netflix acted as the home to the eleventh season with fourteen episodes and much fun was had by all. The Return also led to a series of live tours that kept going until Covid kicked in and they also did a Dark Horse comic spinoff.
Unfortunately, Netflix wasn’t so enthusiastic in the aftermath. The twelfth season only contained six episodes, emphasizing the challenge of binge-watching them. Then Netflix unceremoniously dumped the show. Well, at least we have the fourth season of Glow to look forward to.
…oh, you bastards.
But now the MST3K team have a brand-new Kickstarter project, “Let’s Make More MST3K & and Build the Gizmoplex!” Yes, Joel Hodgson...

“Mystery Science Theater 3000” could be coming back again…again.
Series creator Joel Hodgson announced Wednesday that the show has launched a new Kickstarter campaign to create a new, independent season of the series. The current goal is to raise at least $2 million to create new episodes of the beloved cult show and what Hodgson has dubbed the Gizmoplex, an online platform on which the show and related content will be released in the future. At the time of this publishing, nearly $500,000 has already been raised by over 2,000 backers.
The news comes around six years after the show’s record-breaking Kickstarter campaign to fund a new season, which ultimately aired on Netflix. Netflix then ordered a second season of the show but declined to pick up a third in 2019.

The snarky bots of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” and their human companion, Jonah Ray, will not be returning for another season on Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
Jonah Ray, host of the new “MST3K,” tweeted Tuesday that Netflix had canceled the show, a long-running cult favorite. Netflix confirmed that the series will not return for another season.
“We don’t know what the future holds for the show,” Jonah Ray wrote in his Twitter thread, adding, “it always seemed to figure out how to survive. From Comedy Central to SyFy. Then kept alive by Rifftrax & Cinematic Titanic. Whatever happens, I want everybody to know that getting a chance to be on this show was a dream come true.”
Jonah Ray wondered if AMC Networks’ Shudder streaming service might rescue “MST3K”: “Now if only I can convince @shudder to pick us up and to let us share a night with Joe Bob Briggs?...

In the not too distant past — November 24th, 1988, A.D. — a moderately successful stand-up comedian named Joel Hodgson slipped on a jumpsuit. He then spent a few hours on a Minneapolis Uhf station making fun of the terrible movies Invaders from the Deep and Revenge of the Mysterions from Mars, alongside a couple of handmade robot puppets. Only a handful of lucky Minnesotans were watching Ktma that Thanksgiving night, exactly 30 years ago. They all saw the birth of a pop culture phenomenon: a charmingly cheap-looking show that, no joke, changed television.

[Editor’s note: Mild spoilers follow for the first episode of “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Gauntlet.”]
When “Mystery Science Theater 3000” returned for what was technically Season 12 on Thanksgiving Day, it did so under the weight of a huge cliffhanger: At the end of Season 11, Jonah (Jonah Ray) had been devoured by a robot snake — his ultimate fate left in the balance…
…a fact that gets totally brushed aside at the beginning of the first episode, so that Jonah and his faithful robot friends Crow (Hampton Yount) and Tom Servo (Baron Vaughn) can get back to what matters: making fun of bad movies on the Satellite of Love.
“It’s a commentary on shows that do big cliffhangers, and just like, ‘Oh, what if they just didn’t care?'” Ray said in an interview. “What if the show itself just said, ‘Eh, don’t worry about it. No one cares, we just want to get back to doing the show.’ It was just the funniest...

MST3K season 12 scales back in various ways, but delivers a strong set of six episodes on Netflix.
Movies
When Mystery Science Theater 3000 returned for its eleventh season, they had big shoes to fill. While the series has evolved over the decades, prior change only happened in pieces. When Mike Nelson replaced Joel Hodgson as MST3K host, everything else remained the same. With the jump from Comedy Central to the Sci-Fi Channel, it still just boiled down to losing Trace Beaulieu and having to cover for it. The eleventh season, on the other hand, was a total changeover. New host, new voices for the robots, new antagonists, new set, newer everything.
They did pretty damn well. The fourteen-episode season was well-received overall, even if it had some growing pains. The biggest issue was that the jokes were too rapid-fire and felt unnatural. Lines weren’t given time to breathe...

The first look at HBO’s upcoming Watchmen adaptation poses a very important question: “Who watches The Watchmen?”
The comic book-based series — penned by Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Lost) — is set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws. Per HBO, the show “embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.” The ensemble includes a who’s-who of acting vets and genre faves, including Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison and Frances Fisher.

Maybe it’s because this week’s home entertainment releases happen to be falling on the same time as Tax Day, but Tuesday’s Blu-ray and DVD debuts are what my grandfather would refer to as “slim pickins.” In terms of new titles, we’re finally getting the long-awaited sequel to Deep Blue Sea as well as the latest season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on both formats. Cult film fans will want to nab the new Blu-ray for Day of the Reaper, as it’s a very limited edition release, and for those of you looking to fill in a gap in your personal collections, The Skulls arrives in HD on April 17th, too.

When Comedy Central was developing “The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail,” a TV show based off the weekly standup showcase at Meltdown Comics, co-host Jonah Ray knew that there was only one place the show would work. Any time someone suggested the show could be filmed in a different studio or a larger venue, the response was always the same: They had to do it in Meltdown’s back room.

Last year we saw the, um, return of cult comedy series “Mystery Science Theater 3000” on Netflix with their revival season aptly titled “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return.” The new season starred Jonah Ray, Patton Oswalt, and Felicia Day (along with Baron Vaughn as the voice of Tom Servo, Hampton Yount as the voice […]

For those of you who are fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on Netflix, you'll be happy to hear that it has been renewed for a new season! I absolutely love this show I couldn't be more excited that we will be getting a new season!
The big announcement was revealed at the conclusion of the annual Thanksgiving marathon of the show that runs on YouTube. This will be the second season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on the streaming network, but it will be the twelfth season of the show overall.
I imagine the original team will all be back. That cast includes Jonah Ray, Hampton Yount, and Baron Vaughn back in the theater as they take part in Kinga Forrester’s (Felicia Day) and Son of TV’s Frank’s (Patton Oswalt) evil experiments of watching hilariously bad B movies. Obviously, series creator Joel Hodgson will be back...

I've made my love of MST3K and the new cast (Jonah Ray, Baron Vaughn, Hampton Yount) before, and am excited to report an upcoming live show featuring the new cast! It'll be a nationwide tour called the "Watch Out For Snakes!" tour, named after a terribly dubbed line in the abysmal caveman-on-the-loose film Eegah, that's thus become a recurring gag on the show. Yesterday, there was a video of the robots from Mystery Science Theater 3000, Tom Servo and Crow T. So I don't know how everyone feels, but I've been really enjoying the newest season of Mystery Science Theater 3000, the cult sci-fi comedy show about a guy (in this case comedian Jonah Ray) and his two robot pals Tom Servo and Crow T. If you know the words, sing along:
If you’re wondering how he eats and breathes
and other science facts,
Just repeat to yourself, “It’s just a show,
I should really just relax…”
for Mystery Science Theater 3000!”
While some things have changed about the revival of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” (premiering this weekend on Netflix) an awful lot hasn’t — including the refrain above from the opening theme song, familiar to generations of fans. The lyrics above, a winky nod to the absurdity of the show’s premise, has always been a major tone-setter for the series created by Joel Hodgson, which brings together an appreciation for the clumsiest efforts in film history with its own crude yet charming style.

In the not-too-distant future, next Sunday A.D. …well, actually, right now, on Netflix. That’s right, the cult favorite TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000 has returned, with all-new hosts, all-new Mads and all-new voices for some familiar bots. Begun as a Kickstarter and now launching on Netflix, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return is conceived as a new season of the original show. It builds off of the property’s beloved past and adds a few new quirks, but maintains the basic format of a guy, his bots and a pantheon of bad films.
The conceit of the new Mystery Science Theater 3000 mirrors the old: a hapless employee of Gizmonic Institute finds himself imprisoned on the Satellite of Love by two mad scientists who force him to watch bad movies. He maintains his sanity by riffing on the films, with the help of his robot companions Tom Servo,...

Way way back in 2015, Matthew Monagle wrote a column about the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Kickstarter that was going on. Show creator Joel Hodgson had this crazy idea to bring the franchise back via crowdfunding and was asking fans of the franchise to donate. Monagle wrote that the original show held a special place for him. It made his dreary demeanor open up and he would bellow into laughter as he explains here:
That show made me laugh, big, whooping, ugly laughter that prevented me from ever watching the show in the presence of new acquaintances or adolescent crushes.
Even though he would be what we should call a “legacy fan”, he was uncomfortable with donating to the creator who had given him so much joy. The Kickstarter was asking for a ton of money, where if only $2 million was funded there would be three new episodes...

Hey, Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans! Netflix has released the first trailer for their revival series, and it's wonderfully cheesy in the most awesome ways. Seriously, you're gonna love it.
The new series puts Jonah Ray, Hampton Yount, and Baron Vaughn back in the theater as they take part in Kinga Forrester’s (Felicia Day) and Son of TV’s Frank’s (Patton Oswalt) evil experiments of watching hilariously bad B movies.
The trailer also hints at some of the movies that will be featured in the series. One of which includes is the 1961 film Reptilicus, which is a film that has been long requested by fans. I'm incredibly excited about this and will be enjoying some fun late nights watching it.
Anticipated Reboot of Fan Favorite Series Mystery Science Theater 3000 will be Available on Netflix in the Us, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK and Ireland in the “Not-Too-Distant Future.

Netflix is bringing back the classic series Mystery Science Theater 3000! I enjoyed the hell out of the series, and I couldn't be happier that it's coming back to provide us geeks with more fun and hilarious entertainment!
The first photo of the new cast has been released, and I think fans will be happy with who has been brought on board. Netflix picked up 14 episodes of the series, which was crowdfunded on Kickstarter. They raised $5.7 million during their funding process. It was also announced that the series will premiere on Netflix on Friday, April 14th! Fan won't have to wait much...

The big announcement was made at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday - Netflix will be streaming the Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt-led Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival. Creator Joel Hodgson launched a Kickstarter campaign back in 2015 which eventually gained over $5.7 million in funding from fans (just beating the previous record by the Veronica Mars film). Pretty quickly they rounded up a cast which included Day as Kinga, Oswalt as TV's Son of TV's Frank, Hampton Yount as Crow T. Robot, Baron Vaughn as Tom Servo, and Jonah Ray as host. Hodgson followed up the Netflix announcement on his Twitter by adding that Kevin Murphy, Mary Jo Pehl, and Bill Corbett would also be appearing as themselves in the next MST3K and that he would also have a cameo. A month ago "Mystery Science Theater 3000" creator Joel Hodgson began a Kickstarter campaign to bring back the cult favorite sci-fi property. The campaign launched with huge ambitions - hoping to raise $5.5 million in order to produce twelve new episodes of the show with a whole new cast.
Said campaign came to an end last night and the result was even better than expected. The fundraising resulted in a total of $6.3 million being raised, making it the the largest crowd-funded online video of all-time and beating the $5.7M previous record held by "Veronica Mars".
In fact it made so much that fourteen new episodes of the series will be able to be produced, including a new holiday special. Hodgson says the aim of the whole campaign isn't just to make one new season but to ultimately finding a way to "give our show a home, so that we can make a lot more seasons.

A Kickstarter-funded reboot of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” is more than halfway to its funding goal — and creator Joel Hodgson hopes that a new cast will help introduce the ’90s cable phenomenon to a new generation. “The theory is to refresh it for a new audience but still invite the original people to come back creatively and do cameos,” Hodgson told TheWrap. Most recently, Patton Oswalt joined the project to write and play TV’s Son of TV’s Frank, the offspring of the character from the original show played by Frank Conniff. Joel Hodgson's Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival has found its new villain, along with the voices behind Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo, according to a hefty update from the show's Kickstarter page. The Mst creator semi-confirmed three casting rumors behind the roles (semi because he has to wait until the end of fundraising to officially set anything) one week after announcing Jonah Ray could be the new host. Comedians Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn are set to voice Crow and Servo, respectively, and Felicia Day to take a turn as Kinga Forrester (the next Mad, and Dr. Clayton Forrester's daughter). At time of publication, Mst's nearly half-finished campaign had raised more than $2.6 million, which translates to at least three episodes for the time being.
