The burgeoning ‘acquimissions’ model of co-productions was one of the points of discussion at Singapore’s Asia TV Forum and Market.
Conceptually, acquimissions blend the worlds of acquisitions and commissioning where independent producers and production studios engineer co-productions between themselves and platforms and commissioners across territories and windows.
“This is something that has happened because of the shrinking production budgets, something that is slowly, but surely, touching Asia,” said Justin Deimen, president, 108 Media, a global company that is actively pursuing the acquimissions model.
“If your businesses is entirely or solely dependent on full commissions to just keep going, I think you need to strike that balance, you need the diversity in your portfolio. It’s time to really shake it up,” said Donovan Chan, co-founder and creative director of Singapore’s Beach House Pictures. Earlier, Chan spoke at length with Variety on the changes facing producers in Asia.

In the early years of the 21st century, bankers to the film industry set their eyes on East Asia and headed for Hong Kong and Beijing. They could see that mainland China’s decision to open the film business to the private sector had the potential to be a game-changer. Multiplexes were being built, box office was growing and trans-Pacific co-productions were starting.
But the revolution failed to happen, Asian film financing refused to become Westernized and debt financing of filmmaking remains a minority activity in the region.
Film production in East Asia continues to be built on a foundation of corporate balance sheets (or self-finance) with a generous sprinkling of private equity. Large, structured funds remain rare outside South Korea and the region does not have the same subsidy culture as Europe.
Location incentives have grabbed headlines in an array of countries over the past decade, but governments have not always followed through.

Singapore’s 108 Media has picked up international sales duties on Indian drama film “Lorni – The Flaneur.” Directed by Wanphrang K, Diengdoh, the film had its premiere at the Black Nights festival in Tallinn in November last year. I twill be pitched by 108 Media on the side lines of the Toronto International Film Festival this week.
Starring Adil Hussain, the film is a character study of a self-styled detective who escapes boredom when he begins probing the disappearance of objects of great cultural value. That sets him navigating narrow streets and dark alleys, and embarking on an emotional and mental journey, that forces him to reflect on his own reality and that of his home.
The title refers to the Khasi word “Lorni” which means inquisitive person. The film is primarily presented in English and Khasi, with some Hindi. It was shot around the city of Shillong, in Meghalaya, India.

South Korea’s Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan), Asia’s largest genre film fest, has announced 21 titles from 12 countries to be presented during the Network of Asian Fantastic Films (Naff) genre film project market.
Dubbed It Project, the market has in past years showcased films such as Arvin Chen’s Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? and Lisa Takeba’s Haruko’s Paranormal Laboratory, which have screened at festivals including Tribeca, Berlin and Rotterdam.
Naff will run July 19-22 during BiFan, which will run July 16-26. Previously known as PiFan, the fest changed its name earlier this year in belated accordance with the current system of Romanizing Korean names. Thus it now uses ‘Bucheon’ instead of ‘Puchon’ to indicate the pronunciation of the name of the satellite city of Seoul that hosts this fest.
Aside from arranging business meetings, Naff will hand out post-production awards and a total of KW66m ($59,300) in cash prizes.
