Back in March 2023, the Austin-based collectibles and poster company Mondo was hit with a wave of layoffs from parent company Funko, including the company’s former co-founders and creative directors. Today, those leaders have announced their comeback.
Former Mondo creative directors Spencer Hickman, Eric Garza, Mitch Putnam, and Mo Shafeek have teamed up with CEO Jenny Jacobi to form a new company called Mutant, which will release limited-edition artwork, posters, soundtracks on vinyl, collectibles, events, and more.
The company is being formed underneath SpectreVision, Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah’s genre-bending production company. The company is kicking off its launch with a vinyl soundtrack for Netflix’s “Society of the Snow.” The LP features artwork from Mo Shafeek adorning the score from composer Michael Giacchino as well as liner notes from director J.A. Bayona.

Nicolas Cage will be the featured guest at Quebec’s Fantasia International Film Festival, where he will receive the festival’s Cheval Noir Career Achievement Award.
On the night, Cage will also present his latest pic, Sympathy for the Devil. Written by Luke Paradise, the pic follows “The Driver” (Joel Kinnaman), who finds himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse after being forced to drive a mysterious man, “The Passenger” (Cage). As their white-knuckle ride progresses, it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems.
Deadline previously shared an exclusive first look at the pic here.
Announcing Cage’s honor, the festival said the actor was a “remarkable performer responsible for bringing life to some of the most fascinating people to grace the big screen in some of the most extraordinary films ever made.”

As a fan of French Canadian synth composers Le Matos, I came across their soundtrack for a web series called Exode recently. The soundtrack is as good as anything they dreamed up for Turbo Kid or Summer '84 and so I went looking for the series itself. Sure enough it's on YouTube now and it more than lives up to the Le Matos score.

Sometimes it feels as if eighties-styled genre tributes are becoming as prolific a cinema exercise as superhero films. Even the wildly successful It remake swapped out the novel’s sixties setting for that era of BMX-straddling and Pac-Man-binging. Summer of 84 – a coming-of-age thriller whose very name conjures up the type of obvious nostalgia fest we’ve come accustomed to of late – is able to subvert expectations due to the care and attention the makers have taken to ensure it isn’t just another predictable pastiche. The film’s only real sticking point is the weak denouement which can’t match the dark thrills and foreboding atmosphere with preludes it.
