In Irish Wish, a new Netflix rom-com, a bride-to-be is dumped by her lover on wedding day — but, with steely determination, she quickly closes in on a handsome replacement. Consistent with rom-com protocol, her “Irish wish” is realized.
Going back to When Harry Met Sally…, there’s always been something cozy and likable about the rom-com genre. No Hard Feelings starring Jennifer Lawrence did well last year as a feature and now is up for a sequel.
And Anyone but You has surprised rom-com experts. Its numbers are impressive – 2.8 billion hashtag views on TikTok and a worldwide box office that has surpassed $200 million. The data reminds some of a throwback to the Bridget Jones cycle.
To be sure, rom-coms have become formulaic, especially the Netflix model. But a case could be made that they now emerge as a positive social resource now.
“The Gen Z-ers need prods of positivity,” observes one psychologist.

There’s still nine months to go until the presidential election, and we’ve already reached peak talking points. At least, that was the contention from Bill Maher in his “New Rules” editorial on Friday’s Real Time.
“It gets so dull hearing these talking points,” Maher lamented, running down a list of common complaints about the economy and other issues. “The American dream is dead because Mars bars were $1 and are now $1.25,” he noted as one example of the hyperbole he abhors.
While Maher allowed that he wouldn’t choose President Joe Biden as his partner for the Squid Game, he ran through a list of things that are going well at the moment, from the economy to home ownership to energy output.
Yet, “I know what you hacks on both sides will say before they say it,” he said.
He asked, “Is it really healthy to blame every problem on Joe Biden?...

You’ll have heard of Netflix and Chill by now, but a new study suggests that the latter half of that two-person activity may not be as scandalous as it sounds. The Wall Street Journal performed a survey on the phenomenon, gathering responses from 1,000 people on how their binge-watching habits affect their sex lives. The numbers don’t lie, and they spell disaster for some streamers: One in four respondents said they’d chosen streaming video over sex in the last six months, with that number jumping to 36% among people between the age of 18 and 38.
“Several sex therapists say the problem is bigger than Netflix,” per the report. “Technology writ large, including phones, Instagram, YouTube, Fortnite and anything else people do on the internet, is stealing Americans’ attention.”
As for how Netflix feels about all this, the company offered a statement: “We take pride in being part of the cultural zeitgeist,...

Kim Kardashian has a baby daughter, and her name has been revealed. Let the hollow analysis begin!
I'd be shirking my duties if I didn't try to make some sort of hay out of the neonate North West. And that's in fact the name of the debut baby born unto Kardashian and Kanye West: North.
So what does it all mean, other than some company is about to get way rich selling Kardashian Kompasses?
The Fame Fatale found out. The short takeaway: It doesn't mean anything when it comes to the baby's personality. It's a newborn. It doesn't have one of those.
But the name sure does say a lot about Kim and Kanye. Specifically: They are not just narcissists. They just might be extreme narcissists.
I reached out to Jean Twenge, of San Diego State University's department of psychology. Is it just me, I asked the author of "The Narcissism Epidemic,...
