Nicole Brenez, Alain Guiraudie, Darezhan Omirbayev, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Kent Jones, Joshua Oppenheimer, Aaron Cutler, Sean Baker, Lois Patiño, Diego Lerer, Denis Côte and Gabe Klinger are just a few of the many who have contributed best-of-2014 lists to Otros Cines. Roger Koza's counted the ballots and the top three are Pedro Costa's Horse Money, Jean-Luc Godard's Adieu au langage, Lisandro Alonso's Jauja, Sergei Loznitsa's Maidan and Aleksey German's Hard to be a God. Meantime, FiveThirtyEight has surveyed 30 national publications and found that—no surprise here—Richard Linklater's Boyhood is the clear favorite. » - David Hudson...

Jodie Mack's Razzle Dazzle and Blanket Statement #2 will screen this Saturday in New York within Projections, a weekend-long sidebar of the New York Film Festival. Projections occupies the place formerly held by Views from the Avant-Garde following Views programmer Mark McElhatten’s departure. Its inaugural lineup presents around sixty-three films (a combination of features and shorts, almost all of them new works) dispersed among thirteen feature-length programs. One can call the Projections films experimental, avant-garde, form-breaking or simply playful.>> - Aaron Cutler...

Film history frequently offers two versions of Fritz Lang: A maker of epic German tragedies and melodramas prior to Nazism’s rise, and a creator of lean, tight Hollywood noir films after leaving Germany in 1933. Yet this division placed within the great Austrian director’s half-century-long film career should be challenged. One reason why is that it overlooks the outliers, such as Lang’s lone film made in France, the splendidly gentle and sad supernatural romance Liliom (1934); his nineteenth-century adventure tale Moonfleet (1955), a CinemaScope work shot on the MGM backlot with an almost entirely British cast; and his final films, realized after he left Hollywood to return to Germany. Another is that it ignores other major binaries and shifts in Lang’s practice.>> - Aaron Cutler...

Canadian documentarian Peter Wintonick has passed away at the age of 60. Aaron Cutler has some words and links on the artist.
The Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma, also known as the Rome Film Festival, has announced its awards from a Jury chaired by James Gray. Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Seventh Code was among the winners, picking up Best Director and Best Technical Contribution.
The Seventh Art's latest video mag is now online, featuring interviews with João Pedro Rodrigues and Corneliu Porumboiu, among others. What's next for Joe Dante? A horror-comedy starring Anton Yelchin titled Burying the Ex (it's the sort of cheesy title we'd only let him get away with!).
Finds.
Above: from our friend Adrian Curry's Tumblr, a French poster for The Big Sleep that auctioned off for $21,510. Check out this fun, totally bizarre interactive video for Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone". For Film Comment, Max Nelson...
