Ronna McDaniel was supposed to be the new star contributor at NBC News. Now her position there is looking increasingly untenable.
NBC News hired the former Republican National Committee chief last week, betting that her recent access to the Trump campaign and Republican politicians would make her a valuable analyst as the 2024 election cycle intensified. But in recent days, her ability to do just that seems unclear. On Monday, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski suggested on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that NBC News reconsider its hire. A day earlier, Chuck Todd took to “Meet The Press” to chastise NBC News bosses for making moderator Kristen Welker conduct a news interview she had previously booked with McDaniel now that she was a paid operative of NBC and potentially less able to respond truthfully to hard questions.
It seems very likely that her position at NBC will remain in the news for the immediate future.

Update, with video: NBC’s Today team gave a toast Pete Williams on Friday as the veteran Supreme Court and Justice Department correspondent retires at the end of this month.
“When Pete speaks, it is fully vetted, you know that it is accurate, you know that it is fair,” said Today co-host Savannah Guthrie.
The Today team of Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, Sheinelle Jones and Tom Llamas held up glasses of champagne to toast Williams, who held up his own glass from NBC News’ Washington, D.C. bureau.
Williams has not announced what he will do next, but said that he has “plenty of new projects to take on.” Williams has been with the network for almost 30 years.
Kelly O’Donnell will add to her duties as senior White House correspondent and serve as interim Supreme Court correspondent until a permanent successor is chosen. The network also announced a series of changes...

One year into the Biden administration, the nation’s big TV news organizations’ hopes for a return to normalcy have yet to be borne out.
While White House activity has found a more familiar cadence during President Joe Biden’s first year — ABC News political director Rick Klein calls it “professional” — many of the TV reporters who cover the place say their working lives have yet to return to pre-Trump rhythms. The ongoing pandemic and ramped up demands for streaming initiatives have increased pressure on correspondents and news organizations at a time when traditional ratings are down.
“Today was bananas,” says Cecilia Vega, ABC News’ chief White House correspondent, during a recent phone interview that started just after 11 a.m. — before the day was even halfway through. She had been working furiously since 5 in the morning. “Is it slower? We are not at the point at the White House where...

NBC News announced a series of promotions and changes to their White House team on Friday, with Kelly O’ Donnell named senior White House correspondent.
“You’d be hard pressed to find any journalist currently on the beat with more experience, having covered Presidents W. Bush, Obama, Trump, and now Biden,” Ken Strickland, NBC News senior vice president and Washington bureau chief, and Stacey Klein, director of NBC News’ White House unit, wrote in a memo to staff.
Elyse Perlmutter-Gumbiner was promoted to White House Coordinating Producer, tasked with planning and scheduling, coordinating large projects, and overseeing domestic presidential travel.
Meanwhile, White House correspondent Geoff Bennett said that he is leaving his post, but he will be sticking around as a contributor. He has not yet announced his next career move.
Bennett also has been a fill-in anchor in the 2 Pm hour on MSNBC. Bennett previously covered the White House...

After a month of non-stop news culminating with President Joe Biden’s inauguration, NBC News this weekend officially moved in to its long-planned new Washington D.C. bureau and studios.
The new building, in the works for nearly two years, is located near Capitol Hill, much, much closer to the action than its previous D.C. headquarters.
“If you were to build a Washington, D.C. network news operation from scratch, this is the place you would build it,” says NBC News Washington bureau chief Ken Strickland. “We’re close to news events and steps away from Washington decision-makers,...
