KollywoodThe video has gained over five million views so far.Tnm StaffTwitterYogi Babu is riding a new wave of stardom. His recent music video, 'Kalyana Vayasu', from Nayanthara’s upcoming film Kolamavu Kokila, also known as CoCo has gained over five million views so far and is trending at number one on YouTube. The video begins with Yogi Babu confessing to Nayanthara that while he is facing pressure from his family to get married, he has always pushed them away saying he has not found the ‘right girl’. The video shows Yogi working at a grocery shop and has a compilation of him dancing, stalking, skipping and riding the bike. Nayanthara’s look for Kolamavu Kokila has a lot in common with her look in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. The actor is also seen wearing a backpack - both in the song and in the film’s posters. Composed and rendered by Anirudh, the song has both English and Tamil lines, penned by actor Sivakarthikeyan. The film marks Anirudh’s collaboration with Nayanthara after Naanum Rowdy Dhaan and Velaikkaran. The video is also being widely appreciated by many on Twitter. KollywoodThe film has four female leads, all of them transient characters.Anjana ShekarDirector Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi took a five-year break before releasing her second film - Kaali. While her first film was a romantic comedy, this one’s a potpourri of genres. There’s action, drama, romance, comedy, and a good dose of suspense. The makers also launched a 7-minute preview of the film prior to its release, so the premise of the film was revealed even before it hit the screens. Bharath, played by Vijay Antony, is a successful doctor in the Us who runs his own hospital. The film, in fact, begins with a dream sequence in a village field. A toddler is in the way of a bull that’s been scared by a snake and is charging down the field. As the mother runs to save her child, the dream is interrupted. While Bharath is only vaguely concerned at first, the truth that he’s actually an adopted son leads him to ponder the dream further and what it could possibly mean. This sets him off on a search that might sound vaguely similar to the Oscar-nominated film Lion. But, the similarities stop here. Kaali is in every way an Indian film and the number of flashbacks the film has is proof enough. Prior to its release, Kiruthiga had said that women writing scripts will improve how roles are written for women actors but there's very little evidence of that in Kaali. To begin with, the four female leads in the film have minimal screen time and although they push the story forward, they leave only a fleeting impression on the audience. While this is still understandable, dialogues like ‘udane love panrava vena emathuva, romba naal alaya vittu love panra paaru, ava ematha maata’ (a girl who immediately accepts your love might leave you and go, but a girl who lets you wait for long and then accepts your love will not leave you) and ‘amma yaaru nu theriyama visaricha paravalla, appa yaaru nu visaricha nalla irukadhu’ (it is all right if one doesn’t know who his mother is but it is not nice if one were to go asking who his father is) are entrenched in patriarchal ideas and come off disappointing. Yogi Babu does a great job with the delivery of his comic lines and although it's not a laughter fest, at least they don't leave us cringing. Vijay Antony has evolved in his acting skills and the film gives him plenty of meat to prove his mettle. The film’s background score is appreciable and so are the stunt sequences. Amritha Aiyer and Shilpa Manjunath, both debut actors, have done a fairly good job with whatever limited screen time they could get. Anjali flits in and out through the film and Sunaina has very little to do to leave an impact. All the women, invariably fall in love with the people they are meant to. The film’s sound team has done a good job, especially during the action scenes. Kaali does not rush through at all and the screenplay can seem like a stretch at some point. Except for the preposterous sequence of events that build up to the climax, the film is a well-packed drama. Disclaimer: This review was not paid for or commissioned by anyone associated with the film. Neither Tnm nor any of its reviewers have any sort of business relationship with the film's producers or any other members of its cast and crew.

InterviewKiruthiga Udhayanidhi speaks to Tnm about 'Kaali' and her experiences as a woman director in a male dominated industry.Siddarth SrinivasFacebook/KiruthigaUdhayanidhiAfter almost five years since her debut with Vanakkam Chennai in 2013, director Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi’s second film Kaali is ready for release this Friday, the 18th of May. Tnm caught up with the director soon after her return from Hyderabad, where she was promoting the Telugu version of the same film titled Kaasi. In the period after Vanakkam Chennai, Kiruthiga had penned two scripts – one, a crime thriller and the other, a commercial family entertainer which has taken shape as Kaali today. The timeline of Kaali dates back to 2015, when the director had pitched the script to actor Dhanush, a good friend of hers. “Dhanush had just completed Anegan, and was not ready to do another film which had multiple roles immediately. But, he was the first to encourage me and also agreed to produce the project under his banner. For various reasons, that didn’t take off. At the same time, I was also in talks with Simbu to do a particular role in the film, and things were progressing. But after a few days, everything collapsed,” says the director. Vijay Antony came in as a blessing in disguise. He hopped on board the film as a producer, actor and music composer. “I’m so glad it took off with Vijay Antony. With him bringing all his skills to the fore, I just saw the perks of a single person doing it all for my script. In every department, it is as much as his product as it is mine," says Kiruthiga. However, initially, Kiruthiga pitched the thriller script to him and not that of Kaali. “I narrated the crime thriller to him first, but he strayed away from it. Believe me, I was on the verge of changing my career, because of getting so disappointed and tired of trying. In the film industry, it is very tough as a relatively new director to find a producer, actor, and set the wheels in motion. We have to play the waiting game for long. It was only when I asked him for another chance, trying to break the shackles of the dark thrillers that he usually does, and met him with the script of Kaali that good things finally started to happen,” narrates Kiruthiga. Talking about the design of the film and the genre it belongs to, she says, “Kaali is a commercial entertainer. A mix of everything. It has its lighter moments, emotions, action blocks and so on. When I write a story, I don’t particularly stick to a single genre or hero. In that way, I get rid of any creative limitations and widen my canvas.” Asked whether Vijay Antony has done justice to her vision, Kiruthiga is quick to give an affirmation: “I don’t know if it’s just me or whether I’m being biased, but he has really put up a terrific performance in Kaali, though he won’t admit to it. There are some scenes which require high levels of positive temperament to pull off, but as a director and a scriptwriter, I’m very happy. I didn’t see even the slightest of inhibitions in him.” The trailer and sneak peek of Kaali showcase Vijay Antony as a rich Nri doctor returning to India, in an attempt to trace his roots and dig out details about his blood relations. On the face of it, the film does share some similarities with Garth Davis’ 2016 biographical drama Lion which starred Dev Patel, Rooney Mara and Nicole Kidman. However, Kiruthiga denies the fact that it is a remake, stating that she had written the script of Kaali 4 years ago. “I had pitched the script of Kaali to Dhanush long back. I saw Lion out of curiosity, but that film is completely different. Except for the first ten minutes, nothing will look the same," she asserts. Kiruthiga also shares her appreciation for her producer and actor Vijay Antony for completing the shoot of the film in 58 days, when it was initially planned at 73. Commenting on this, she says “An extensive and detailed pre-production process is the only thing that can help you finish a film in a short span of time. Vanakkam Chennai, being a home production, I was able to think from a producer’s shoes, and the speed with which we shot the first schedule of Kaali was breakneck. We also did a few double and triple callsheets to try and stick to the budget.” In an industry dominated by men, it is not easy for a woman director to establish herself. Even though it has taken her a lot of time to get a project moving, Kiruthiga seems to have truly arrived now. “We are still in a male chauvinistic society. It is a little bit tougher when you’re a woman to exhibit and convince people with your talent. They still have doubts about how we will pull off the hardcore stuff and the action sequences. In other industries, women are on top of their game, but in Tamil we are still regressive. It is only when quality directors like Sudha Kongara come up and prove everybody wrong, tables turn. Women coming into writing will only better the woman roles in cinema. For instance, the four female characters in my film are definitely deeper than the shallow and squashy roles that a male counterpart would write. There’s a huge difference there.” she concludes. KollywoodDirected by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, Kaali stars Vijay Anthony in the lead role with Anjali and Sunaina playing the heroines.Digital NativeDigital NativeEarlier, film distributor William Alexander had filed a petition at the Madras High Court for an interim stay on the release of the Vijay Anthony starrer Kaali and according to latest reports, this stay has been lifted. Incidentally, the film has been produced by Vijay Anthony’s wife Fatima Vijay Anthony under the banner Vijay Anthony Film Corporation. According to the complainant, William Alexander, Vijay Anthony sold the distribution rights of Annadurai for a huge price but it bombed at the box office. This resulted in a huge loss to the complainant following which Vijay Anthony promised to hand over the distribution rights of Kaali for a lesser amount but it later turned out that it was sold to another distribution without his knowledge. This forced William Alexander to file a petition seeking compensation to the tune of Rs 4.73 crores. The Bench, on hearing the case, ordered the stay to be lifted on the condition that Vijay Anthony furnishes a bank guarantee for the sum in the name of Registrar General of the High Court towards the amount of the civil suit which is pending adjudication before it in the matter. Also, the court held that the interim stay shall be vacated automatically if Vijay deposits in the court a sum of Rs 4.73 crores. Directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, Kaali stars Vijay Anthony in the lead role with Anjali and Sunaina playing the heroines and Amritha, Shilpa Manjunath, Yogi Babu, Madhusudan, Nassar and Jayaprakash in pivotal roles. Besides playing the hero, Vijay Anthony has also composed music for this venture while Richard M Nathan is the cinematographer and Lawrence Kishore is the editor. Kiruthiga had previously directed the 2013 film Vanakkam Chennai, starring Shiva and Priya Anand in the lead, while Vijay Antony was last seen in the family drama Annadurai. The plan was to release the film in March but had to be postponed due to the film industry strike. (Content provided by Digital Native)...

KollywoodThis is the first time that the actor-composer is donning khaki in a film.Digital NativeTwitter/Vijay AntonyAfter he was seen playing dual roles in last year’s Annadurai, actor-composer Vijay Antony is all set to don khaki for the first time in his upcoming film Thimiru Pudichavan, which was officially announced with a poster last week. The project, to be directed by Ganesha, a former associate of SS Rajamouli, went on the floors on Wednesday. Sources report that Antony is learning silambam, an ancient stick-based martial art popular in Tamil Nadu, for his role and will use this skill in some action sequences. “There was scope to use silambam in action sequences and when I told Antony sir, he was really excited. It’s going to be a new attempt and I’m quite in awe of his commitment,” Ganesha said in a statement. Ganesha also said that the movie is not based on a routine cop versus villain tale but will include elements of mind games. It will also portray the contemporary youth scenario. For Thimiru Pudichavan, Antony will be seen sporting a twirled moustache and will shed a few kilos to play an upright police officer. To be produced by Vijay Antony Film Corporation, Richard M Nathan will crank the camera. The rest of the cast and crew are yet to be officially announced.
