Los Angeles - Stuart Murdoch, frontman and founder of Scotting band Belle & Sebastian, has been juggling a couple projects over the past year. First was his God Help the Girl music side project, then "God Help the Girl," his first film foray as writer and director, and then a brand new album for B&S. It's the one in the middle, he said in our interview this week, that changed everything. He called the big-screen musical "a whole new thing, I won't ever go back." "God Help the Girl" -- starring Emily Browning, Hannah Murray (Gilly on "Game of Thrones") and Olly Alexander -- has been on the festival circuit since January. It's set in Murdoch's homebase in Glasgow, with Browning starring as Eve, a young girl struggling with anorexia and other mental health issues, finding temporary relief in songwriting with two new friends. For any fan of Belle & Sebastian,...

Dum Dum Girls' Video For "Rimbaud Eyes" Is the Sexiest Cartoon of the Day Watch frontwoman Dee Dee Penny traipse through a psychedelic red-light district. by Liam Mathews The Dum Dum Girls perfected their brand of '60s-girl-group-meets-'80s-new-wave a while ago, and now they just keep cranking out sparkly art-goth pop songs like "Rimbaud Eyes" like even sexier Strokes. In this new video, the Batman theme song composers get a cartoon of their own. Dazed Digital accurately compared the video to James Bond title sequences and Jem and the Holograms, but it's sexier and more alluring than those comparisons let on. The video was directed by musician and artist Tamaryn and animated by VFX whiz Gooby Herms. "Rimbaud Eyes" is from Dum Dum Girls' album Too True. Images via Sub [...]...

Bret Easton Ellis, who penned "The Canyons," is no stranger to psychological thriller territory, but his new short film "Are You Okay" is certainly a bit removed from his past work. Written by Ellis and directed by acclaimed music video directors Ben and Alex Brewer (collectively known as "Brewer"), the short film/music video features the new single "Are You Okay?" by Dum Dum Girls and follows a psychologically disturbed young woman played by singer/guitarist Dee Dee Palmer. In an interview with Vice's music channel Noisey, Palmer cited "Dressed to Kill" by Brian De Palma (referred to as "De Palmer") as an inspiration before the film turned into something more original. That's certainly true, but the video plays less like "Dressed to Kill" by the "American Psycho" scribe and more like "Dressed to Kill" as directed by Shane Carruth. The odd, atmospheric short is available in full below.

As you might surmise from recent gigs that include a still mysterious project for Kanye West, and Manson family TV series with Rob Zombie, "American Psycho" and "The Canyons" writer Bret Easton Ellis doesn't pen anything safe or easily digestible. And even when it comes to writing a short film for noise-pop outfit Dum Dum Girls, the result is appropriately surreal, eerie and creepy. The Sub Pop band has dropped "Are You Okay," an eleven-minute short film penned by Ellis, starring frontwoman Dee Dee Penny and Shiloh Fernandez, and directed by Brewer (no, not Craig Brewer, just Brewer). And it's a twisted little psychological thriller that starts with a therapy session and goes to some places that you'd probably just be better off watching yourself, but stick through to the end when it really dials up intensity. Didn't have your morning cup of coffee? This will provide the jolt you need.
