Update, 9 Am Pt: Derek Chauvin’s attorney laid out a defense that will claim that George Floyd died of a host of other factors than the use of excessive force.
Eric Nelson told jurors that Floyd died of cardiac arrhythmia, which he blamed on preexisting conditions of hypertension and coronary disease as well as his use of methamphetamine and fentanyl. He also cited increased levels of adrenaline.
“Common sense is the application of sound judgment based upon a reasoned analysis, and that’s what this case is ultimately about; it’s about the evidence in this case,” Nelson said.
Nelson also said that Chauvin was “doing exactly what he had been trained to do” in the arrest of Floyd.
Previously: Major broadcast and cable networks carried the opening arguments in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of George Floyd during his arrest in May.

Chilling images from the Trump mob’s attack on the U.S. Capitol continue to astonish much of the media even days later, but one of the most difficult to watch is that of an Associated Press photographer, John Minchillo, being beaten on the east side of the Capitol as he tried to cover the demonstrations.
“While we are thankful he is Ok, this is a reminder of the dangers journalists both in the U.S. and around the world face every day while simply trying to do their jobs,” said an AP spokesperson.
What is hard to believe is where the events of Wednesday took place: At a well-fortified and protected symbol of democracy, overrun by angry rioters, insurrectionists and domestic terrorists.
Some of the most disturbing video was captured by Young Kim, a videographer who works under his Rise Images banner, and had followed the mob up the...

Last year — appropriately for a year in which the #MeToo movement was launched — marked a significant milestone on the road to gender equity in television news. In 2017, for the first time, nightly news assignment desks gave equal time to their leading male and female correspondents. Of the top 10 reporters ranked by airtime on the three broadcast networks’ weekday nightly newscasts, five were men and five were women. ABC World News Tonight gave most prominence to Jonathan Karl, Mary Bruce and Cecilia Vega. CBS Evening News relied most on Nancy Cordes and Jeff Pegues. In the days and months before he mowed down concertgoers from his high-rise hotel suite, gunman Stephen Paddock rented rooms overlooking two other music festivals in Las Vegas and Chicago, authorities said.
They gave no details on what his intentions might have been.
The disclosures came as investigators struggled for a fourth day to explain what led the 64-year-old high-stakes gambler to open fire Sunday night on an open-air country music festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel casino. He killed 58 people and injured nearly 500 before taking his own life.
