Tyler Perry has conquered the entertainment world — the creative force between two dozen films, 17 television shows, bestselling books and 20 stage plays. He built a thriving studio complex in Atlanta, and just today Deadline reported he has signed a first-look deal with Netflix to produce faith-based films alongside DeVon Franklin.
It’s been a long and improbable journey to the top of his profession, a tale told in the Emmy-contending documentary Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story. Gelila Bekele (Perry’s former life partner) and Armani Ortiz directed the Amazon MGM Studios film, with the first footage shot a decade ago.
“I saw this man becoming busier than ever and I had the privilege of having a front-row seat and I wanted to just document it for archive,” Bekele explained during an appearance at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience in Hollywood. “I realized there’s a huge chunk of missing history,...

Because of the scarring she sees on his brain, while he might recover with physical therapy, she doesn’t see a world in which any doctor or department will clear him to fight fires again. After seven seasons, Station 19 will be saying goodbye, and there’s good news and bad news heading into it: Andy (Jaina Lee Ortiz) is captain, but Jack’s (Grey Damon) life is hanging in the balance. The ABC drama returns on March 14, and if you’re having trouble facing that this will be the last premiere, you’re not alone. Ortiz knows how hard that is, for herself and for fans. When TV Insider caught up with her recently, we talked to her about that, what’s to come in the final season, and how she thinks it will all end. Talk about getting ready to say goodbye to Andy. Station 19 is ending this season, but of course, it won’t be doing so without a crossover with sister series Grey’s Anatomy. “There’s going to be a crazy crossover towards the end,” Station 19 star Jaina Lee Ortiz (who plays Captain Andy Herrera) tells TV Insider ahead of the drama’s seventh and final season premiere on Thursday, March 14 (moving from 8/7c to 10/9c). “I have a feeling there’s going to be a major crossover towards the end of the season. And this character has never visited Grey’s Anatomy in this way.” That is all she can tease, but it certainly has us intrigued! And while Station 19 is coming to a close, Ortiz agrees that since we have yet to hear about this being the final season of Grey’s as well, there’s always the possibility of these characters showing up on the flagship series.

Malaga, Spain — Traditionally, until a few years back, a Spanish film industry debate led to a “Wall of Laments” which ended up as a call for increased governmental support.
That was then. €70 million ($76.8 million) in 2023, €100 million ($109 million) last year, Spain’s Icaa film institute budget could add another €30 million ($32.7 million) with a little luck this year, said Rocío Juanas de Toledo, its secretary general at a panel, Spanish Cinema Models Examined, one of the key industry debates at this week’s Malaga Festival.
Panelists represented Spain’s three biggest content investors – Movistar Plus+, Atresmedia and Rtve – and two top producers: Morena Films and Elástica Films.
It took speakers less than two minutes to zero in on Spain’s biggest immediate challenge: Its still underperforming box office, down 24% on pre-pandemic levels.
“Our major concern is how to recuperate the cinema theater audiences we had before the pandemic,” said Jaime Ortiz, Atresmedia Cine director general.

Chile went through political turmoil in the 1970s when Augusto Pinochet became their president. With the Pinochet regime already in power and ending civilian rule in 1984, UFOs were hovering above the sky. One day, radio jockeys Cristina Carvelli, Daniel Morales, Cristina Muñoz, and her spouse Octavio Ortiz receive a message from a sailor named Hector. He informs them from his dispatch at the Mitahues Lighthouse that “a big fireball” has landed at the mysterious, human-inhabited Friendship (an island in Los Chonos Archipelago) and is approaching them.

A movie with the title “Maxine’s Baby” brings with it certain expectations; namely, that it will help you learn something, anything of substance regarding a person named Maxine. The new documentary from directors Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz does not fulfill that promise. Maxine in the film is Willie Maxine Perry, and the baby is her son, Tyler Perry. Over the course of its too-long one-hour and 55-minute runtime, “Maxine’s Baby” shares a grand total of maybe three facts about Perry’s mother: 1) she was married to an abusive man, 2) she was religious, and 3) she died in 2009. Any real meat about who she was as a person is cast aside in favor of picture montages and in-the-moment interviews where Perry discusses his love for his Maxine, and how she shaped him into the artist he is today. These sections universally go down like a wafer cookie: sweet but...

With the continued support of its members and supportive sister unions like the WGA, IATSE and Teamsters, among many others, lead negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland remains confident all involved can reach a fair deal.
“I think it’s so impressive, the unity, the strength of our members. As you’ve seen on picket lines, our members are in this fully. Even if you think you know Tyler Perry’s story – his improbable rise from homeless playwright to billionaire media mogul with a dozen Madea movies in between — the first footage from the upcoming documentary “Maxine’s Baby” contextualizes it all in a new way.
In August, Variety exclusively announced that the documentary was heading to Amazon MGM Studios. Directed by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz, the documentary aims to present an “tender, intimate portrait” of Perry, with its title as a nod to his late mother Willie Maxine Perry, who died in 2009, and the two-and-a-half-minute trailer teases what’s to come.
The trailer opens with Perry backstage before a big event — presumably the 2019 opening of his eponymous 330-acre studio in Atlanta, Ga. “How are you feeling right now sir?” Ortiz asks from behind the lens.
“My problem with a lot of things in life is I can float above it.

Driving into Spanish-language movies and series, Amazon Studios is hoping to repeat the success of “Argentina, 1985” with big Spanish period production “Hildegart,” starring Najwa Nimri and Alba Planas (“Skam España”), which wrapped production Aug. 19 in Madrid.
“Hildegart” has shot in the Spanish capital filming seven weeks and some days at historical heritage sites such as Spain’s Congress, Madrid’s Puerta del Sol central square, and its Atheneum.
Directed by Paula Ortiz, “Hildegart” is a fact-based tale of the extraordinary and tragic life of Spain’s Hildegart Rodríguez, born in 1914, a child prodigy raised by her mother to be a model for future women, who gave conferences on feminism and sexuality from the age of 11, writing on prostitution, contraception and eugenics – her monograph “Profilaxis anticoncepcional” sold 8,000 copies in one week just in Madrid – and accompanied H.G. For nearly 20 years, Karla Ortiz has worked as a concept artist, bringing to life an entire universe of characters in projects like Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Thor: Ragnarok. She’s credited with coming up with the main character design for Doctor Strange in her own blend of impressionist and magic realism styles honed by decades of practice.
She was horrified to learn last year that her work at the forefront of multibillion-dollar franchises is being used to train generative artificial intelligence systems without her knowledge or consent. Imitations of her work are now floating all across the web. Her name has been fed into Midjourney, an AI art generator, more than 2,500 times to create art that looks like hers. Fox Sports is betting big on MLB analyst Alex Rodriguez.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the 14-time MLB all star and World Series champion is closing in on a contract extension with Fox Sports, a deal that if completed will keep him working big MLB games for Fox for years to come.
Rodriguez is a critical piece of Fox’s MLB on Fox studio team, working alongside host Kevin Burkhardt, 10-time all star and three-time world champion David Ortiz (“Big Papi”), as well as 14-time all star and 5-time world champion Derek Jeter, who previously played with Rodriguez on the New York Yankees.
Terms of the new Fox deal were not immediately clear, though it is believed to be the most lucrative deal yet for an MLB analyst, with a term of more than three years.

Match #1: Aew All-Atlantic Championship Match – Orange Cassidy def. Big Bill The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:
Cassidy walked out of the ring and invited Big Bill onto the floor, playing mind games with Big Bill. Big Bill planted Orange with a high side slam and followed up with a running splash in the corner. Big Bill booted Orange out of the ring! Stokely Hathaway cleared off the timekeeper’s table. He and Big Bill moved the table toward the ramp. Big Bill wanted to chokeslam Orange through the table but Cassidy fought back.

Die Hart: The Movie is a comedy movie directed by Eric Appel
Kevin Hart pokes fun at his supporting role in action movies and signs up for an action actor’s school with John Travolta as his instructor.
Funny… but only just
And if we were worse people we’d say it’s almost close to a B-movie that doesn’t deserve its stars.
With John Travolta, Nathalie Emmanuel, Josh Hartnett and Jean Reno.
Movie Review
A film that looks promising but disappoints you very quickly.
It barely holds up for the first ten or fifteen minutes, when Hart is interviewed. Then, it becomes not much or even just nothing at all, an anecdotal film, video-club fodder in bygone times, one of those movies that no one had heard of and that were rented without thinking too much about it and from which little was expected anyway.
Other than someone learning what Chrome Keying is…...

Match #1: TNT Championship Match – Darby Allin def. Juice Robinson The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

Juice sat out with a senton but Darby lifted his knees into Juice’s spine. Juice hoisted up Darby, sending him crashing to the arena floor. Juice whipped Darby into the security railing. Juice rammed Darby into the steel ring steps. Darby fired back with a John Woo dropkick and then a tope suicida to Juice!

Welcome back to another review of Aew Dark: Elevation, which features 11 matches on this week’s show – urghhhh, I’m not a fan of these longer cards, especially given most matches are usually squashes! We’ve got Paul Wight and Matt Menard on commentary, so let’s get into the review.
Match #1: Brian Cage def. Schaff
My Thoughts: As this started I thought “here we go, another Brian Cage squash” but that is Not what we got! The crowd in attendance were clearly behind Schaff and so we actually got something of a competitive match, with Cage letting Schaff showcase his stuff for those unfamiliar with his work. In the end that made for a great match!
My Score: 3 out of 5 Match #2: The Kingdom (Matt Taven and Mike Bennett) def. Bollywood Boyz (Harv and Gurv)
My Thoughts: I’m not going to lie, when it comes to The...

Fuerza Régida’s corridos have become so popular that the California band never knows who might call them up next looking to collaborate. A few weeks ago, it was Marshmello. Today, it’s Myke Towers.
Fuerza Régida’s lead singer Jesús Ortiz Paz had mentioned the Puerto Rican rapper just moments earlier when suddenly, he glances down and holds up his phone. “Speaking of the homie, look!” he exclaims. Within seconds, Towers is on the line. “No te vas a morir pronto, compa,” Ortiz tells him. “I was just talking about you.

Welcome back to another review of Aew Dark: Elevation, which this week keeps the match count low, with only 6 matches on this week’s card! We’ve got Matt Menard and Paul Wight on commentary, so let’s get into the review.
Match #1: Marina Shafir def. Jazmin Allure
My Thoughts: Shafir dominated this match, squashing Allure in less than two minutes. Short and sweet but very effective.
My Score: 1 out of 5 Match #2: Emi Sakura and The Bunny def. Lady Bird Monroe and Gigi Rey
My Thoughts: Another squash match. Not much to say about this one other than Emi Sakura and The Bunny made for a good team – both of them have evil streaks that really added to the storytelling of this one.
My Score: 1.5 out of 5 Match #3: Top Flight (Dante and Darius Martin), Ethan Page, Matt Hardy, Isiah Kassidy and Konosuke Takeshita def. The Trustbusters and...

Chris O’Shea has joined the HBO Max drama pilot “More” in a series regular role, Variety has learned exclusively.
O’Shea will star in the pilot along with previously announced lead Christian Serratos and cast members Ana Ortiz, Yvette Monreal, Georgie Flores, Ceci Fernandez, and Gore Abrams.
The show is inspired by the reporting of journalist Amy Chozick. Per the official description, “‘More’ follows the Lorenz family, a tight-knit clan of seemingly flawless Latinas led by mom/mastermind Leona (Ortiz). The Lorenzes are the Vanderbilts or the Astors of the Instagram era. They pulled their way up from debt and obscurity to reality TV stardom and forged a billion-dollar mega-conglomerate not from oil or steel but from something more elusive and modern: Influence.”
O’Shea will star as Timothy Wilde, described as a lesser British aristocrat engaged to Londyn (Serratos), making him one half of ‘Lonothy,’ social media‘s most buzzed-about and closely-watched celebrity couples.

Welcome to this week’s review of Aew Dark: Elevation, the opening salvo in the Aew wrestling week. Once again we’ve got Matt Menard on commentary again this week joined by Roh’s Ian Riccaboni. So let’s see what the show has to offer!
Match #1: Kip Sabian and Penelope Ford def. Skye Blue and Shawn Dean
My Thoughts: This was Ok for a mixed-gender match, although everyone seemed off balance for this one – with Sabian and Ford looking worse in this match than in their recent solo outings. An odd, odd match.
My Score: 2 out of 5 Match #2: Ortiz def. Serpentico
My Thoughts: Another decent singles outing for Serpentico, with Ortiz looking good too. For me Luther spoilt this one, between his behaviour ringside and interference it felt like it was detracting from what Serpentico was doing in-ring.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Final Verdict: 2.5/5
Well that was short.

Edwin Hodge joins FBI: Most Wanted as Agent Ray Cannon. Pic credit: CBS
The first day on the job is never routine on FBI: Most Wanted.
After the Season 4 premiere explained that Ortiz had left the team to care for his father, Taxman introduced his replacement, agent Ray Cannon (new cast regular Edwin Hodge).
He had a tough first case as the team tracked someone targeting IRS agents only to learn their perp had a very troubled history.
Cannon had to learn fast that being on the Task Force is a much different cry than his previous work as a cop, but he proved himself in the end.
Meanwhile, tensions between Barnes and Remy continued to rise, threatening the case and the team’s relationships.
While it came through in the end, it was a rough ride that showed the team still had a few hurdles to clear before Season 4 truly gets going.

Freeform is “F”-ing around with its look. Literally. The Disney cabler’s new logo centers on two stylized “F”s (in “free” and “form”) that perpetually wiggle and move around in the network’s IDs. It’s part of a brand refresh instituted by Freeform president Tara Duncan, who took over the network in summer 2020, and her content marketing senior VP, Joe Ortiz, who joined the following spring.
“As Tara Duncan came to Freeform, we really wanted to refine who we were and who we were serving, and then ultimately connect the dots visually,” Ortiz says of the new logo and graphics package, which was launched on-air and online the week of Sept. 12 (tied to the premiere of new series “The Come Up”). “What we wanted to do is to create something that was modern and ownable and ultimately emotive, much like our audience. So, it was just a full Freeform evolution.
