In an…interesting interview with Shack News, Pete Hines defends Doom Eternal‘s lack of a traditional deathmatch multiplayer mode by saying that the deathmatch mode is “eons old.”
“We don’t want to do something just for the sake of doing it, or because something has always been a certain way,” Hines says. “We want to make sure we’re doing stuff that’s interesting and that resonates. I loved the idea of what they were doing with Battle Mode. The first time I played, I was instantly hooked. I’ve only played as a demon, in part because as I mentioned, I get really motion-sick as the Doom Slayer. But it’s super-fun to play as the Pain Elemental; I gravitate toward that demon in particular. I’m playing the game from a very different angle.”

Doom Eternal is id Software's change to improve on 2016's Doom and the studio isn't taking that for granted.
Doom (2016) was a lean, mean, lightning-fast corridor shooter that commanded the attention of the gaming community with its sharp visuals, blistering gameplay, and thunderous soundtrack. It won several awards, including Best Music and Best Action Game at the 2016 Game Awards, sold millions of copies across multiple platforms, and was received well by critics.
But despite such a successful venture, id Software believes that there were many ways that the game could be improved upon, which they endeavor to address in the forthcoming sequel, Doom Eternal, which Den of Geek got to play for three hours at a preview event last week in San Francisco.
“We feel like, objectively, there were things we could have done better to expand the scope of [Doom 2016],” says Doom and Doom Eternal game director Hugo Martin.

Last month, Nintendo fans were in for a surprise during the latest Nintendo Direct video, announcing some of Bethesda's latest games would be coming to the Switch. Today, we get a release date for the new Doom game, along with a new video discussing the features.
If you haven't jumped on the Nintendo Switch train yet, you definitely need to. The 3rd-party support is certainly coming along, and the ability to take your game anywhere is a most welcome change. When Bethesda announced they were bringing over just about all of their recent titles (Skyrim is launching on November 17th as well, with WolfensteinII at some point) would be coming to the system, I was overjoyed.
Today brings us a new video that highlights some of the features gamers will encounter on the Switch version of Doom, as well as a release date. You'll be able to battle the demon...

Disney has iced a Los Angeles Times reporter from the premiere of “Frozen — Live at the Hyperion,” the live musical version of its hit movie. Hugo Martin, who covers travel and tourism for the Times, has been told he was “disinvited” to the Thursday night gala at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, because of a recent story he wrote about the company’s soon-to-open theme park in China, a person with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. Before leaving for the premiere, Martin received an email from Disney advising him to call the company’s publicity team first. A company publicist...

With the release of Doom now just over a day away, Bethesda Softworks have released their latest promotional video to introduce even more of the customizable experience. The “Guns, Demons, Speed” video talks players through some more of the creative process, before going on to show the unique features on offer.
Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin talk at length about the different customization options players will have in Doom, explaining how even a shotgun can be modified to make it much more than just a close-range weapon. Martin goes on to describe the game’s enemies as “chess pieces,” as they each have different features and styles. Building your full arsenal completes your hero’s “army,” allowing you to take on the full force of the enemies later in the game.
Stratton then introduces the upgrade system that’s been implemented in Doom, explaining how it encourages multiple play-styles. Research...

Gamers can have a remarkable gluttony for punishment these days, and it sounds as though Doom is going to provide more than enough to satisfy such players. The game’s developers have been talking about the Ultra-Nightmare difficulty in their upcoming title, and have admitted that even they are having a large amount of trouble with it.
Speaking to Gamespot during a recent live-stream, executive producer Marty Stratton introduced the game’s toughest setting to viewers:
Ultra-Nightmare combines the second highest difficulty, Nightmare, with permadeath, meaning if you die once, you have to restart at the beginning of the game.
Stratton went on to add that this mode would feature a global challenge, whereby players can compete against their friends with leaderboards showing who managed to get the furthest. When you die, a Doom marine helmet will be dropped in the world and fellow...

Gamers can expect an ear-shredding experience when they descend into the world of id Software’s upcoming shooter, Doom, later this year. In an interview for Game Informer’s February issue, the developers spoke of their over the top approach to the world-building and admitted to taking inspiration from the heavy metal-focused Brutal Legend.
The next instalment of the Doom franchise is set to arrive this year after an eleven year break, and id Software’s Marty Stratton Hugo Martin spoke with Game Informer about the inspiration and planning behind their upcoming title:
Rock ‘n’ roll was our inspiration for everything. There is a lot of heavy metal in our hell, and that is intentional […] When you look at the original Doom, we always said it looks like the kind of stuff a 15-year-old would draw on the back of his notebook during math class. We really wanted the world...

At QuakeCon over the weekend, id Software have been talking about its forthcoming Doom and how it takes the series back to its 90s roots...
The 2012 Bfg Edition reissue aside, id Software's seminal Doom franchise has been worryingly quiet for the past decade. As anyone who's been following its progress will know, the production of the latest entry in the series, now simply called Doom, hasn't been a smooth one: years of development were cast aside in 2011, when id took the bold step of returning to the drawing board.
Four years on, and id Software have been showing off the rebooted Doom to a largely excited response; the footage of its single- and multiplayer modes offering up a pleasing mix of the original Doom games' frenetic movement and the kind of HD graphics we'd expect from a modern shooter.
