If 2024 is the year American voters will experience a sense of déjà vu at the ballot box, it’s also likely to go down as the year that fans of indie genre cinema will feel it at the box office. From Sundance to SXSW, a surprising number of films have had fun with the concept of time, whether in terms of history literally repeating itself or presenting new angles on the same set of events.
Exec-produced by filmmaker duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and written-directed by their longtime editor Michael Felker, Things Will Be Different — as its title suggests — has an even more rarefied take, using time as a hiding place, a surreal and ingenious conceit that adds a creepy air of mystery to its otherwise solidly sci-fi scenario.

Over the last decade or so, Marvel has had a knack for snagging independent filmmakers with a lot of buzz, critical acclaim, and innovative creative voices to join their stable. Before James Gunn was at the helm of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, he was the guy who got his start writing "Tromeo and Juliet" for Lloyd Kaufman. And he's not alone. Scott Derrickson, Jon Watts, Taika Waititi, Cate Shoreland, Destin Daniel Cretton, Chloé Zhao, Nia DaCosta, and so many others were still stars on the rise when Marvel came calling.
Fan reactions are typically divided with one camp worried this marks the end of their independent visions in favor of corporate-driven storytelling, while others are thrilled to see directors they love getting one hell of a paycheck. Theoretically, this should give them the creative freedom to make whatever film they want next, like the director's version of what...

From the panicked voiceover conversation that plays over a black screen in the first moments of “Things Will Be Different,” it’s clear that Sydney (Riley Dandy) and Joseph (Adam Thompson) are in some serious trouble. After pulling off a lucrative robbery by the skin of their teeth, the two siblings can almost feel the grains of sand slipping through their hourglasses as the sounds of police sirens grow closer. With the world closing in around them, the only things working in their favor are the massive bag of cash in her hand and the fact that he thinks they can time travel their way to freedom.
Through his various criminal dealings that remain unexplained, Joseph has negotiated access to a safe house that can shield its inhabitants from the laws of time and space. It might look like a simple farmhouse far removed from civilization, but that’s exactly...

A pair of siblings on the run after a robbery take refuge in a house with mysterious time-warping qualities, only to find that the law isn’t the only thing they have to fear. Things Will Be Different, the latest from the Rustic Films roster comes from longtime Benson & Morehead editor Michael Felker, who makes his feature writing and directing debut with this mind-bender that very much fits the mold of his frequent collaborators. Joseph (Adam David Thompson) and Sidney (Riley Dandy) have just pulled off a major heist and they have to lay low for a while. This sibling duo hasn’t always had the greatest relationship – there is a traumatic past that comes into play –...

Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker knows his way around time-shifting, metaphysical labors of love, having edited Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Something in the Dirt, Synchronic, The Endless, and Spring. Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, seamlessly fits into the Benson/Moorhead cinematic universe, introducing a fractured sibling relationship put through the physical and emotional wringer when they play with forces they don’t quite understand.
Estranged siblings Sidney and Joseph fall into old habits like no time has passed at all when they rendezvous at a diner. That’s largely due to Joseph having a large bag of cash grabbed from an armed robbery, and the authorities are rapidly closing in. The siblings quickly make their way to an abandoned farmhouse with instructions on how to escape their current reality. The plan is to wait out the cops from the safety of an alternate timeline,...

As a fan who’s always ready to warp into the realms of time travel movies, my anticipation for Things Will Be Different was as high as my hopes for a DeLorean to appear on my driveway. Helmed by Michael Felker, in what marks his leap from editing to directing, with frequent collaborators Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (Something in The Dirt) producing, this film is a time-twisting tale that packs a lot more than just temporal leaps.
Things Will Be Different throws estranged siblings Joseph (Adam David Thompson) and Sidney (Riley Dandy) into a temporal tangle that’s more twisted than spaghetti in a black hole. After a diner meet-up goes awry, they find refuge in an abandoned farmhouse that’s more than it appears. What initially seems like a lucky escape turns into a chronal puzzle, ensnaring them in a time they can’t easily zip back from.

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just arrived online, and in this one we’re looking back at a movie that was just released last year, writer/director Joe Begos‘s holiday horror film Christmas Bloody Christmas – which got an 8/10 review from our own JimmyO that you can read Here and is available to watch on the Shudder streaming service. To find out what we had to say about Christmas Bloody Christmas one year after its release, check out the video embedded above!
Christmas Bloody Christmas has the following synopsis: It’s Christmas Eve and fiery record store owner Tori Tooms just wants to get drunk and party, until the robotic Santa Claus at a nearby toy store goes haywire and makes her night more than a little complicated. Santa Claus begins a rampant killing spree through the neon-drenched snowscape against a backdrop of drugs, sex, metal and violence,...

5 Best Christmas Horror Movies(Photo Credit –IMDb)
When one thinks of Christmas, horror, and gore are generally not the first things that come to mind. Christmas is all about having fun. It’s full of life and color, and identifying it as scary would be out of place. And while Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” does make a perfect example of a ‘scary Christmas,’ it does not qualify as a traditional, spine-chilling horror movie. But contrary to popular narrative — certain media out there does it, and does it well. Think of the latest “Fargo” episode that runs a Halloween theme and blends it with “Nightmare Before Christmas.”
So, the appeal behind it is understandable. This is why we have curated a list of the best Christmas horror movies you can enjoy for a change of pace from all the happy and sparkly traditions.

On the first day of Creepmas, my true love gave to me…12 Killer Santa horror movies to herald in Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Days of Creepmas. This year, we’re reinterpreting the “Twelve Days of Christmas” to bring twelve days of holiday horror. ‘Tis the season to be naughty, after all.
It feels only right to kick things off with a look at one of holiday horror’s most prominent icons: the Killer Santa Claus. The niche subgenre of Killer Santa holiday horror movies is as robust as ever, offering ample murderous maniacs to spread holiday fear this season. Here are 12 of the most prominent and bloodthirsty of the bunch.
If your favorites are missing, don’t worry; there’s still plenty of holiday horror fun on the way.
Violent Night
Violent Night introduces Santa Claus (David Harbour) as a cynic drowning his frustrations in booze at a bar on Christmas Eve.

Holiday horror has officially moved from the month of October to the chillier air of the Christmas season. Genre fans making their 31 Days of Horror list during Halloween can just as easily come up with 25 scary movies to watch every day in December. This year, Joe Begos and company added "Christmas Bloody Christmas" to the growing pile of Yuletide horror found underneath the VHS tree. Call it "Xmas-ploitation" if you must. In what's essentially a non-stop chase featuring a killer robot Santa (Abraham Benrubi), Begos could have easily delivered a run-of-the-mill slasher without any real visual flair. Instead, "Christmas Bloody Christmas" is a wonder to look at, mostly thanks to cinematographer Brian Sowell's ability to bathe the small town streets in a luminous and ominous trail of lights. In /Film's review, Chris Evangelista said the film has "a style so sharp that it borders on breathtaking," and he's not wrong.

"Jessica must now juggle all the classic tropes—actors falling in and out of love, a wayward elf dog and her own stirring romantic feelings for her perceived nemesis—in order to get her movie and her life to their happy endings. Is there enough Christmas magic to pull it off? In...

Joe Begos unleashes a new holiday horror classic with his gleefully gratuitous robot Santa rampage, Christmas Bloody Christmas.
Horror is most commonly associated with Halloween, but Christmas is right behind the spooky season when it comes to holiday-based horror movies. Christmas horror movies take plenty of different directions from creative home invasions to Satanic elves. However, the killer Santa trope is by far the most common device that’s turned to by these movies. There’s something inherently upsetting about the corruption of a comforting figure like Santa, but the trope’s overexposure has made it increasingly difficult to feel fresh.
Joe Begos is an exceptional horror filmmaker who’s previously eschewed genre tropes with Vfw and Bliss. His latest movie, Christmas Bloody Christmas, finally finds a unique angle on the killer Santa stereotype by turning the seasonal threat into a robotic Terminator-like predator. It’s Begos’ strongest film, but...

Once Christmas horror films provided a form of relief to those craving a break from peace and goodwill to all men. Now each winter brings a slew of them, so that they feel almost like part of the festive package. Overall quality has steadily gone downhill as they have strained to squeeze a little more blood out of increasingly anaemic themes. With a simple plot about a killer robot Santa, Christmas Bloody Christmas might sound like more of the same, but writer/director Joe Begos really knows how to tell a story, and against the odds, this film is a gift to jaded viewers.
Riley Dandy plays Tori, a record shop owner who, like many people in retail, is feeling the strain of dealing with festive shoppers. She wants to spend the evening getting drunk and having fun with her Tinder date. Employee Robbie (Sam Delich) has other ideas, however.

Filmed in black and white and set in the 1980s, History of the Occult takes place during the last broadcast of the #1 news show on TV, ’60 Minutes Before Midnight.’

While Violent Night is lighting the box office on fire, there’s another film featuring a Santa with a bit of bloodlust: Christmas Bloody Christmas. Thankfully this Santa is much less friendly and a lot more homicidal. I was fortunate enough to talk with the writer/director, Joe Begos, and pick his brain on this wonderful little title. He talks about how it started as a Silent Night, Deadly Night remake, only to evolve into a killer robot Santa film. This is probably my favorite conversation yet, so don’t miss it!
Christmas Bloody Christmas synopsis: It’s Christmas Eve and Tori just wants to get drunk and party, but when a robotic Santa Clause at a nearby toy store goes haywire and begins a rampant killing spree through her small town, she’s forced into a battle for survival.
The film stars Riley Dandy (That’s Amor), Jeff Daniel Phillips...

A Hollywood Christmas is a romantic comedy starring Jessika Van and Josh Swickard. This quirky Christmas movie for the entire family is directed by Alex Ranarivelo.
Christmas in the studio.
Premise
Jessica, a young, up-and-coming filmmaker in Hollywood has made a name for herself directing Christmas movies. But when handsome network executive Christopher shows up threatening to halt production on her latest movie, Jessica’s assistant, Reena, points out the irony: Jessica isn’t just trying to save her Christmas movie, she’s actually living in one. Jessica must now juggle all the classic tropes—her actors falling in and out of love, a wayward elf dog, and her own stirring romantic feelings for her perceived nemesis—in order to get her movie and her life to their happy endings.

Christmas Bloody Christmas Review: A Robotic Santa Goes Haywire In This Uber-Stylish Holiday Slasher
Christmas has become a ripe season for horror. The holiday horror subgenre is alive and kicking, and it feels like every year we get at least a handful of Christmas-set creepers, usually involving some sort of killer Santa Claus. It's nothing new — Santa has been slashing for years, in one form or another. When TriStar Pictures released "Silent Night, Deadly Night" in 1984, complete with a poster featuring Santa's arm clutching an axe as he descends down a chimney, there was an uproar. The uproar was so loud that TriStar pulled the pic from theaters after a week — which wasn't such a big deal, as "Silent Night, Deadly Night" had already made back its meager budget, and then some, at that point.
"Silent Night, Deadly Night" wasn't the first film to feature some sort of evil Santa — 1978's thriller "The Silent Partner" has Christopher Plummer as a sadistic thief who dresses...

The final month of 2022 is already upon us, and December brings plenty of horror offerings beyond holiday fare- though expect some bloody fun there, too. Whether you’re in the mood to play catch-up on 2022 releases or looking for the deep cuts, this month has it all.
Here are ten noteworthy horror titles available for streaming in November 2022 on some of the most popular streaming services, along with when/where you can watch them.
Tobe Hooper’s Night Terrors – Screambox (December 1)
Robert Englund stars as the Marquis de Sade and his descendent in this strange, underseen feature by Tobe Hooper. Our own Patrick Bromley wrote about the film earlier this year. He wrote, “Hooper was a last-minute replacement for this offbeat horror movie, which attempts to bridge flashbacks of the Marquis de Sade with the modern-day story of a young woman (Zoe Trilling) who gets involved with a weird sex...

If it's one thing all horror fans understand, it's that every month is a good month for watching scary movies. Sure, we often like to ramp up the on-screen scares come October, but the frights still continue throughout the rest of the year. And while the holiday season brings with it a lot to celebrate and be thankful for, there's also quite a lot that still goes bump in the night.
In honor of the various terrors that occur every December — i.e. every single trip you will take to a shopping mall in the coming weeks — here is a list of the best horror movies available to stream this month. Consider it your holiday gift guide for movies you can watch after the family has gone home and you are left to piece your sanity back together. The holidays may only come around once a year, but terror lasts forever.

I’ve been a fan of writer/director Joe Begos’ work ever since I saw his first feature, Almost Human, back in 2104 at Frightfest. My love of his work was cemented by The Mind’s Eye, Bliss and Vfw. One thing his films are known for are the various influences that 80s cinema has had on his work – from The Mind’s Eye being inspired by Scanners; Bliss feeling like the brethren of Near Dark by way of To Live or Die in LA… Begos’ films tend to take on different cinematic horror tropes, whilst harkening back to the 80s, in both style and substance.

It appears we’ve just given up and given in to celebrating the winter holidays prior to Thanksgiving. HBO Max’s the latest to jump on the early winter holiday bandwagon, releasing trailers for three upcoming original holiday films – two of which will arrive on the streaming service on November 24, 2022.
Holiday Harmony starring Annelise Cepero and Jeremy Sumpter and A Christmas Mystery with Eddie Cibrian and Violet McGraw premiere on Thanksgiving. A Hollywood Christmas about a filmmaker who makes Christmas movies will debut on December 1st.
The streaming service also released details on the three ho-ho-ho holiday films:
Holiday Harmony
Singer/songwriter Gail (Annelise Cepero) lands an opportunity to compete for a once-in-a-lifetime shot at the big time, and heads cross country—only getting as far as Harmony Springs, Oklahoma when her ride, her budget, and all her hopes are stalled. With just two weeks to get to the iHeartRadio...

"Ho ho ho!!" Rlje Films + Shudder have revealed an official trailer for a hilariously crazy, brutally violent new holiday horror film titled Christmas Bloody Christmas. While there have been other animatronics-come-alive horror films this year already (see Spirit Halloween and The Curse of Bridge Hollow) this one looks like the best. It's the latest film from director Joe Begos, known for his gritty indie features Bliss and Vfw previously. It's Christmas Eve and Tori just wants to get drunk and finally party, but when a robotic Santa Clause at a nearby toy store goes haywire and begins a rampant killing spree through her small town, she's forced into a battle for survival. The film stars Riley Dandy, Sam Delich, Jonah Ray Rodrigues, Dora Madison, Jeremy Gardner, Jeff Daniel Phillips, & Abraham Benrubi. Uh looks awesome?!?! Wtf! What an incredible trailer - great choice of music and footage. He has laser eyes?...

Plot: It’s Christmas Eve, and Tori and Robbie just want to party and get drunk. Unfortunately, a robotic Santa with evil intentions may ruin their plans.
Review: Recently, I went to the World Premiere screening of Christmas Bloody Christmas at this year’s Beyond Fest. Intending to review this flick, I decided to go in completely blind. Indeed, the title gives a little warning, but the lively introduction of writer/director Joe Begos grabbed my attention. Whatever this holiday offering had, it was going to be rambunctious. And now, I’m happy to say that the wild and wooly, fast-paced fright fest is perhaps one of the best St. Nick inspired horror features in recent years. Bloody, with practical effects, and many F-bombs to offend those who don’t like cursing. And I cannot wait to talk about the rockstar performances of Sam Delich and especially Riley Dandy.
