Following a festival tour, Noah Schamus’ directorial debut Summer Solstice will, fittingly, be arriving this summer from Cartilage Films, the indie distributor of another stellar recent directorial debut, Free Time. A tale of a friendship with a queer and trans perspective, the film will open on June 14 at NYCs IFC Center, followed by a June 21 release on LA’s Laemmle Glendale. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has now arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Trans man Leo’s (Bobbi Salvör Menuez) life is a jumble of auditions, acting classes, barista jobs, and situationships, all of which he hopes will amount to more. Unexpectedly, Leo’s college best friend, cisgender and straight Eleanor (Marianne Rendón), calls Leo announcing that she’ll be driving through NYC, and offers to pick him up for an impromptu trip upstate. They embark on the weekend getaway, marking their first time spent together since Leo began transitioning.

"Still me, Eleanor. Definitely still me. Cartilage Films has revealed an official US trailer for an indie drama titled Summer Solstice, set for small art house summer opening in limited theaters this June. The film originally premiered at the 2023 Provincetown Film Festival, as well as the Deauville, Woodstock, and BFI Flare Film Festivals. Summer Solstice centers on Leo, a trans man, and Eleanor, his cisgender and straight friend from college, who embark on an impromptu weekend trip together going upsate. They uncover old secrets, new challenges, and find the answer to the age-old question: can bad sex and good friends mix? Maybe! Maybe not? Starring Bobbi Salvör Menuez as Leo and Marianne Rendón as Eleanor. One early review praises this as "a remarkable little movie about finding emotional maturity through honesty, most importantly with yourself." This looks like it features two lovely lead performances within a heartfelt story. // Continue Reading...

We've already heard so much about Francis Ford Coppola's struggles to get his giant new film Megalopolis made — from financial wobbles, casting changes and, most recently, a screening for studios and streamers that generated little interest in the way of distribution deals. Yet with a French release in place and an upcoming premiere at the Cannes Film Festival designed to boost the buzz, Coppola has put the first clip from the film, featuring Adam Driver's character, online. Check it out:
Megalopolis is set in an alternate modern America, where the city of New Rome is at a pivot point in history. It has to adapt or crumble, but there is conflict between Cesar Catilina (Driver), who dreams of a utopian, idealistic future for the city and its incumbent mayor, Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who clings to the status quo, allowing greed, special interests and partisan warfare to dominate.

Ahead of the movie's world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, the first trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's sci-fi passion project, Megalopolis, has been released online.
Really more of a scene preview than a proper teaser, the footage sees Adam Driver's character, Caesar, step out on to the ledge of a building and walk precariously towards the edge. Caesar then begins to topple forward, but before he falls, he yells "time stop," and freezes in place. After a few moments, he snaps his fingers and the world around him returns to normal.
Coppola shared the clip on Instagram, with a sad addendum.
"Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor. I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf."

Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" has been in the works for decades, and at last, the first clip from the film has been released ahead of its Cannes Film Festival premiere later this month. It's just two minutes long, but the film finally feels real, not like a vanished dream.
We at /Film named "Megalopolis" one of our most anticipated movies of 2024, and it should be one of yours too. It's the "Godfather" director's first film since 2011's "Twixt," and it was self-financed (meaning creative freedom for Coppola). It also boasts an incredible ensemble, led by Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito.
In "Megalopolis," a city is destroyed in a natural disaster. Idealistic urban planner Cesar (Driver) and Mayor Frank Cicero (Esposito) clash on their visions to rebuild the city, with Cicero's daughter Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel) coming between them. A clip for one of the most anticipated films of Cannes has been unveiled this morning by writer/director Francis Ford Coppola. Opening with that famous American Zoetrope logo from the 1970s, the clip begins with Adam Driver’s character exiting a window at the top floor of a skyscraper and slowly inching towards the building’s sloped edge. As he bends to look down at the street below, then lifts a leg to step off, he loses his balance and yells, “Time stop!” The world freezes and Driver’s character is able to lean back and regain his footing before snapping time back into action. If one looks deep enough, a metaphor can be found for Coppola’s entire cinematic career within this simple two minute scene.

I’ve predicted Megalopolis, anticipated as it is, will have a clear dividing point: the cultural commentariat hoping to see “another film by the director of The Godfather” and those who appreciate “something that looks and sounds like a Star Wars prequel.” I am very firmly in the latter, was duly excited by the first image, and can only be pleased with the time-stopping debut teaser, arriving today via Le Pacte.
It comes with a sad addenedum. Coppola, sharing the teaser on Instagram, noted:

We are sad to report that Eleanor Coppola, acclaimed documentary filmmaker and wife of Francis Ford Coppola, passed away on April 12, 2024, at the age of 87. She died in Rutherford, CA, surrounded by family at their home. No official cause of death has been given as of the time of writing. She is survived by her husband, Francis, as well as their three children, Gian-Carlo, Sofia, and Roman.
Eleanor was the matriarch of the Coppola family, and while she was mostly in the background, she had a profound influence on Francis’ filmmaking and was always there to support him, even in the most complex moments of his career. But, aside from that, she was a documentary filmmaker herself, an artist, and a writer.
She was born Eleanor Jessie Neil on May 4, 1936, in Los Angeles, California. Her father was a newspaper cartoonist who died when she was 10, so she and her brothers were raised by their mother,...

To outsiders, Eleanor Coppola, who died Friday at age 87, presented as soft spoken and unassuming, yet as someone who always understood exactly what was going on. When I first met her she was playing the role of the perfect ’60s “hippie chick” who hung with young filmmakers, tolerated their ego trips but also had a keen sense of talent.
She herself had a degree in design from UCLA and had landed some good startup jobs when she met an ambitious if socially awkward wannabe director named Francis Coppola. He was struggling through a haphazard horror flick titled Dementia 13 and he clearly needed both a girlfriend and some savvy in navigating the system.
He shortly delivered his first movie and she their first son.
Some two decades later her husband hit an anguished impasse while shooting a pricey war movie, inevitably turning for stability and sanity to Eleanor. She’d...

Eleanor Coppola, wife of Francis Ford Coppola, has died at the age of 87. She is best known for Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, the 1991 documentary which chronicled the making of Apocalypse Now, the iconic 1979 movie which was plagued with a myriad of issues.
Eleanor first met her future husband on the set of Dementia 13, which was Francis’ feature directorial debut. Eleanor was the assistant art director on the movie and the pair soon began dating before getting married in 1963. Each of their children, Gian-Carlo, Roman, and Sofia, would get into the movie business after spending their childhood years growing up on film sets, although Gian-Carlo sadly died in 1986 at the age of 22.

Eleanor Coppola, Emmy-Winning Director of ‘Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse,’ Dies at 87
Eleanor Coppola, the matriarch of a Hollywood dynasty who won an Emmy for directing the documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse and helmed her first narrative feature at age 80, died Friday. She was 87.
Coppola died at her home in Rutherford, California, her family said in a statement to the Associated Press.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, five-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, 85; their daughter, Sofia Coppola, the director, producer and Oscar-winning screenwriter; and their son, Roman Coppola, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter.
Her oldest child, actor Gian-Carlo Coppola, died in 1986 at age 22 in a speedboat accident.
Eleanor Coppola often went on location with Francis, and during the making of his Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now (1979), she was in the Philippines to shoot footage with a 16mm camera and conduct interviews, material that supposedly was to be used by the United Artists publicity department.
It would all be seen in Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse.

A lifelong creative partner to her husband Francis, Eleanor Coppola took up filmmaking during the production of his Vietnam war feature “Apocalypse Now.” A highly anticipated follow-up to “The Godfather: Part II,” the planned five-month Philippines shoot more than doubled in length due to a litany of headaches and complications, including initial star Harvey Keitel’s replacement with Martin Sheen, typhoons wrecking sets, a reworked ending and Sheen’s hospitalization due to a heart attack.

The Beatles‘ Revolver is one of several great albums that came out in 1966 and changed the entire trajectory of rock music. Donovan, one of the rock stars who made 1966 a watershed year, discussed why so many musicians made history at the same time. At least one of his comments was questionable at best.
Donovan said civil rights inspired The Beatles’ ‘Revolver’
When people think about the 1960s, they are probably thinking about the period from 1966 to 1969. That era typified most of the artistic and aesthetic elements that defined the decade. Prior to 1966, 1960s music mostly sounded like 1950s music, as evidenced by Phil Spector’s early girl group songs and The Beatles’ bubblegum rock ‘n’ roll tunes.
During a 2016 interview with Billboard, Donovan discussed the musical legacy of 1966. That was the year of Donovan’s Sunshine Superman, The Beatles’ Revolver, The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds, and Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde.

It looks like Crazy Rich Asians 2 is still very much happening, with a shoot reportedly planned for 2025.
2018’s Crazy Rich Asians was a huge hit, and for good reason. Jon M. Chu’s charming romcom, starring Constance Wu and Henry Golding won over audiences and critics alike with its witty humour and genuine, unapologetic romance.
The film was based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel and considering the book spawned two sequels, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, rumours of a sequel to the film have resurfaced often but the projects have not materialised.
Well, there is hope still. Production Weekly (via World Of Reel) reports that Crazy Rich Asians 2 is still on the way and eyeing a 2025 shoot in Malaysia and Singapore. Jon M. Chu, currently busy on post-production for Wicked Part One, is reportedly returning to direct while Amy Wang is penning the script.

There’s been a lot of good found-footage films coming out recently, such as Tahoe Joe 2 and Woods Witch. Now there’s The Glenarma Tapes, an Irish film that begins by telling us that seven people went missing in the woods around Glenarma one night in 2020. One was later found near death and in a coma. Two years later, the police found the footage we’re about to see…
The footage starts innocently enough, as we watch Gordy (Warren McCook; Hope Street) go through his day as a student at Mid Ulster College of Art. His friend Jimmy is making a day-in-the-life type film for his class project. He’s certainly an interesting subject, going from making insightful comments about Romeo and Juliet to...

Elden Ring was released in 2022 but is still relevant almost two years later. While some credit can be given to the game’s first expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, the game’s cult status is to be credited for keeping it relevant in 2024, too.
Since it is a Soulsborne RPG, character builds for one’s main character are essential. As the Tarnished gathers and gears up for Shadow of the Erdtree, ensuring their build is as relevant to the current scenario as possible will set them up for success. These are the top five builds to prepare for the game’s first significant expansion.
Elden Ring Build #4 – Spear Major (Dexterity and Arcane) This Elden Ring build relies on quickly switching between weapons to stack damage.
The weapons for this build will be Eleanor’s Poleblades (Twin Blades) and Rivers of Blood (Katana). Eleanor’s Poleblades will cause a lot of stance damage and,...

Hallmark Channel is capping off a month of original films themed around Jane Austen’s works with the premiere of a new feature-length adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. The classic story about whether young women should choose husbands based on romantic notions of love or practicality has been adapted for both television and film several times before. Many fans may remember either the 1995 film adaptation directed by Ang Lee or the 2008 BBC and PBS television miniseries starring Dominic Cooper and Charity Wakefield.
This Sense and Sensibility stands out from the other recent period adaptations of Austen’s works, however, as it’s produced by Hallmark’s Mahogany brand, which is devoted to producing original films and series with Black screenwriters, actors, directors, and other creatives. Unlike Netflix’s 2022 Persuasion adaptation, which used the controversial strategy of “color-blind casting,” Hallmark’s Sense and Sensibility deliberately sought out Black actors for principal and supporting roles.

Saying goodbye to Ducky was difficult for his colleagues at NCIS and viewers.
The current incarnation of the NCIS Major Crimes Response Team bid farewell to longtime medical examiner Donald "Ducky" Mallard on NCIS Season 21 Episode 2.
But only about half of this squad really knew Dr. Mallard, who started fading into retirement about four seasons ago: Jimmy Palmer (his protege), Kasie Hines (his scribe), and Tim McGee, the only agent to go back nearly as far as he did.
That isn't to say the rest of them didn't know and respect the legend of Ducky. But of those, only Nick Torres and Director Vance had much professional overlap with him.
Otherwise, Ducky was that cool old guy who would stop by and maybe consult when he wasn't busy with a book tour or a teaching job. And let's not forget his official role as NCIS historian, combining two of his passions.

The Beatles‘ “Eleanor Rigby” doesn’t sound much like “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Taylor Swift would probably agree. She explained the difference between her approach to songwriting and what Paul did when he penned “Eleanor Rigby.” The former Beatle revealed the melody of “Eleanor Rigby” received a lukewarm reception when he played it for another musician.
Taylor Swift said The Beatles’ ‘Eleanor Rigby’ is less personal than a lot of her music
In a 2020 article from Rolling Stone, Paul and Swift interviewed one another. Swift discussed one of Paul’s most acclaimed songs. “I also was thinking about how you write ‘Eleanor Rigby’ and go into that whole story about what all these people in this town are doing and how their lives intersect, and I hadn’t really done that in a very long time with my music,” he said. “It had always been so microscope personal.

The Beatles‘ “Eleanor Rigby” doesn’t need fixing. When Paul McCartney interviewed Taylor Swift, he said the track could have had a different lyric. He also explained how “Eleanor Rigby” drew from some of his childhood experiences. Interestingly, John Lennon shared some memories about the writing of the song that contradicted Paul’s.
Paul McCartney said a lyric from The Beatles’ ‘Eleanor Rigby’ could’ve been about the Bible
During a 2020 Rolling Stone article where Paul and Swift interviewed each other, Paul revealed that “Eleanor Rigby” was inspired by elderly ladies he knew when he was a kid. He said those women had great stories about World War II. Paul wasn’t sure how he met those women, because they weren’t part of his family, but he became friends with some of them.

New splatter-comedy Destroy All Neighbors has more on its mind than bad neighbors run amok. Director Josh Forbes, working from the screenplay by Charles Pieper and Jared Logan, crafts a Frank Henenlotter-inspired comedy full of guts and rock ambition. Nestled at the center is a sugary-sweet story of an artist learning to get out of his own way. While that means it has all the right ingredients in place for an infectiously scrappy horror comedy, it might be too narratively streamlined for its own good.
William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues) dreams of prog-rock greatness. Lest we ever forget it for a moment, Mia Isaac is a tour de force.
She has this innate ability to pull you in the second she appears on screen, and that's largely why following Covey's journey during the flashbacks is inarguably the series at its strongest and best.
As a result, Black Cake Season 1 Episode 7 was one of the series' best installments, as it mirrored the Black Cake series premiere in centering young Covey again and pushing the present-day characters to the fringes as needed.
It also marked closure regarding the audio tapes and Covey/Eleanor Bennett telling her children her story.
She's gotten her life story out. With all of its twists, turns, complications, and secrets of her choice, she places the ball in her children's court to do with that information what they desire.

“Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within…and whatever walked there, walked alone.” – Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House (1959).
Of all the subgenres of horror, the haunted house story has provided the most opportunities for slow and subtle terror that creeps and crawls its way under the skin and into the psyche. The Old Dark House (1932), The Uninvited (1944), The Innocents (1961), Burnt Offerings (1976), and The Changeling (1980) stand among the best that not only the haunted house film, but all of horror have to offer. For many, the absolute pinnacle of these films is Robert Wise’s 1963 masterpiece of suggestive horror The Haunting. Based on the novel The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, the film owes much to the influences of the past while still carving a way toward the future, is populated by rich and relatable characters, and is a deeply felt...

Mabel Mathilda makes everything better.
Listen, if we have to spend time in the present with the Bennett siblings, it works best when we get more exciting aspects, such as the two meeting their biological sister for the first time or Byron's relatable candor with a dash of Benny not being as annoying as usual.
And thankfully, Black Cake Season 1 Episode 6 delivered on that.
It doesn't hurt that we got a dash of Covey and saw how flawed and short-sighted she was as a best friend.
Covey's complexities make this story compelling, so any opportunity to revisit her is always welcomed. And did we mention that Mia Isaac is magic? Yeah, we did, but let's repeat it anyway.
On the flashback front, we glimpse some of the tension between Covey and Bunny as best friends because of Covey's attempt to "protect" Bunny from her homosexuality.
Times were different, and as Eleanor Bennett recounted these days,...

The Bennett siblings are doing incredibly well, given all the revelations they're bombarded with at once.
Eleanor Covey Bennett has Lived, and she died with more secrets than any government agency around the globe!
And yet the people she left behind were still unprepared for the whopper of a secret revealed during Black Cake Season 1 Episode 5.
Oh, bless this series' heart; it has everything except the kitchen sink. Scratch that; it has plenty of those, too.
The family melodrama runs strong during this series, with enough plot twists to rival a soap opera.
At the risk of sounding redundant, this series is at its best when it focuses more exclusively on Covey or Eleanor.
Chipo Chung has a quiet way of carrying the series in the more current storylines, as Mia Isaac managed to do so phenomenally in the past.
It sucks to say it, but Benny and Byron just aren't that compelling.

Exclusive: Julianne Nicholson (Mare of Easttown) and Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects) have landed the lead roles in the BBC’s upcoming crime drama series Dope Girls, we can reveal.
Umi Myers, Eilidh Fisher and Geraldine James have also landed major parts in the series, which we first told you about back in March. At the time, our sources said the BBC sees Dope Girls as a spiritual successor to Peaky Blinders, which ended last year.
Filming on the show, which is set in London’s Soho in the early 20th century, when female gangs ran the clubs, drugs and moonshine, is now underway. It will launch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and comes from Polly Stenham and Alex Warren (Eleanor).
Nicholson will play Kate Galloway, a single mother who establishes a nightclub amidst the hedonistic uproar of post-World War One London, embracing a life...

The new Hulu limited series “Black Cake” spans not just decades but continents and class structures – all of which made for some pretty impressive challenges for costume designer Hayley Nebauer.
Based on the best-selling book by Charmaine Wilkerson and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, the eight-episode series moves from the 1940s into the present day, with stops in Jamaica, London, Italy, and Southern California. The show focuses on a woman named Eleanor, whose death unearths many secrets from the past – particularly what happened when she was a young teenager in Jamaica who went by the name of Covey. Mia Isaac stars as the young Covey, with Adrienne Warren and Bashy as Eleanor’s adult children who must reckon with a series of audio recordings their mother left behind as part of her will. “Women of the Movement” and “13 Reasons Why” writer Marissa Jo Cerar is the “Black Cake” creator and showrunner.
