Cole Sprouse works with first-time directors in response to "risk averse" Hollywood. The 31-year-old actor has starred in the films 'Lisa Frankenstein' and 'I Wish You All The Best' from directorial debutants Zelda Williams and Tommy Dorfman respectively and thinks that the movie industry is a better place when "fresh perspective" is introduced. In an interview with Collider, Cole said: "I think the industry's become really risk averse. Super risk averse. I find that the introduction of fresh perspective is getting more and more rare, and so I am always willing to work with first time directors."Obviously there needs to be a level of trust, like Zelda and Tommy are my friends. I have an existing language developed with them that makes me feel comfortable."The 'Riverdale' actor added: "But I think the industry as a whole would stand to benefit pretty greatly...

Stephen King is at his best when he's writing about his fears as a father. With "The Shining," he took his alcoholism and made the lead Jack Torrance into a worst-case scenario, someone who destroys his family (and potential writing career) because he lets his addiction consume him.
Then there's "Pet Sematary," which is all about the primal fear any parent has of their child dying. The Creed family moves to rural Maine, in a house right next to a lethal road frequented by trailer trucks. After the family cat Church becomes roadkill, Dr. Louis Creed and neighbor Jud Crandall bury the cat in an ancient Mi'kmaq burial ground. Church returns, alive but worse for wear. When Louis' toddler son Gage is killed by another oncoming truck, he can't resist the temptation to bring his son back. If there's anything that could inspire a normal person to play Dr. Frankenstein,...

In the recent decades of Hollywood exporting slapped-together “children’s movies” to appease parents just looking to take their kids to anything that can pass the time, any film with an actual sense of youthful wonder in cinema feels like a lost artifact. For his directorial debut Riddle of Fire, director Weston Razooli creates such a utopia, following a group of mischievous children who embark on a woodland odyssey to deliver a pie, battle a witch, outwit a huntsman, befriend a fairy, and become best friends forever.
Though filmed in the Sundance headquarters of Park City, where Razooli grew up, the film premiered at Cannes Directors Fortnight last year and stopped by TIFF Midnight Madness. Ahead of the theatrical opening this Friday, I spoke with Razooli about capturing his neo-fairytale set on 16mm, being influenced by Hayao Miyazaki and Zelda, finding the right tone, what it was like working primarily with child actors,...

The Lisa Frankenstein brain trust of Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody and director Zelda Williams became one of the few silver linings of their pandemic experiences. Unbeknownst to Williams, the duo had a mutual friend in common, Cody’s boyfriend, and when Cody put the finishing touches on her outlandish rom-com script, her partner suggested that Lisa should be the feature-length debut of Williams. After all, she’d been cutting her teeth via TV, music videos and shorts since 2016, and she’s been an actor on sets since 1989, the very year that Lisa takes place.
The film chronicles Kathryn Newton’s grieving teenager, Lisa Swallows, who spends time comforting the dead in a creepy, unkempt cemetery. After a high school party gone wrong, she proceeds to make a graveyard wish that reanimates a once handsome young man from the Victorian era. The mute, partially resurrected corpse known as “the Creature” (Cole Sprouse...

A totally killer paranormal love story inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel is headed to the screen with Lisa Frankenstein, written by Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) and directed by Zelda Williams. Lisa Frankenstein comes to theaters on February 9, 2024.
The ’80s set comedy is “a coming of Rage love story about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.”
Kathryn Newton (Freaky, Abigail) and Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”) star as high school outcast Lisa Swallows and Creature, two complicated characters that couldn’t be further apart in personality but are drawn together by bizarre, supernatural circumstances. Whereas Lisa can’t stop talking, centuries of being dead have left Creature a lumbering,...

One of the greatest losses of the past decade – perhaps in most of our lifetimes – was that of Robin Williams, who tragically died in 2014. Now, his daughter Zelda is lashing out against companies trying to use not just her father’s likeness, but that of any human being in the industry.
In a series of Instagram stories (via Deadline), Zelda Williams said recreating her father through the use of artificial intelligence was beyond bad taste. “I am not an impartial voice in SAG’s fight against AI…I’ve witnessed for Years how many people want to train these models to create/recreate actors who cannot consent, like Dad. This isn’t theoretical, it is very very real.” She added, “I’ve already heard AI used to get his ‘voice’ to say whatever people want and while I find it personally disturbing, the ramifications go far beyond my own feelings.

Ever since their breakout indie The Deeper You Dig lit up the festival circuit in 2019, the Adams family have proven something of a horror genre sideshow for travelling fans; a one-of-a-kind mother-father-daughter filmmaking team who write, direct and star together in what is quickly becoming an impressively unusual oeuvre. Slickly, cheaply made spins on old-school genre mainstays with a fascinatingly personal angle. And their depression-era road movie Where the Devil Roams is no different – a gorgeously minimalist, micro-budget marvel of a family-driven horror.
In fact, the Adams’ latest might actually be at its most impressive when it shuns its bigger crowds and more elaborate dressing, and just leans into its absolute essentials. That is, its core unit; an unusual family band, riding across rural America, on the coattails of a travelling horror show. The Adams Family have done it again! The filmmaking team, made up of father John Adams, mother Toby Poser and daughters Zelda and Lulu, have been writing, directing, producing and starring in their own independent productions for a little over a decade, and have crafted festival favorites including The Deeper You Dig and Hellbender. Last week, at the Fantasia Film Festival, they premiered their most ambitious project yet, Where the Devil Roams, a supernatural horror set in Depression-era America.

There was no escaping “Red Rooms” at Fantasia.
Awarded the Cheval Noir Award for best feature at the 27th edition of the fest, Pascal Plante’s film also took honors for screenplay and Dominique Plante’s haunting score, as well as an outstanding performance award for Juliette Gariépy.
“The ultimate effect a film can achieve is to implant a significant and lasting emotional memory. ‘Red Rooms’ masterfully accomplished that goal,” said jurors David Hewlett, Brenda Lieberman, Jourdain Searles, Virginie Sélavy and Gary Sherman.
“With incredible skill and artistry, without resorting to gore or violence, this film delivers not only an extremely disturbing and frightening experience but introduces you to characters and situations you may never forget.”
Produced by Nemesis Films, it takes on the trial of a man accused of murdering teenage girls and selling videos of his crimes online. But Plante wanted to focus on women who follow him.
