Timed to coincide with TV’s upfronts in New York, a real estate-focused event that also calls itself the Upfronts — a luxury property reveal thrown by The Society Group — took over The Wallis in Beverly Hills on May 15. Held in the Bram Goldsmith Theater, the confab saw L.A.’s biggest power brokers gather to preview some of the world’s most luxurious listings coming to market.
“This is fun for me because usually I’m sitting in the audience where you’re sitting looking at a performance,” Carolwood’s Linda May noted, “so it’s really nice to look out and see so many friends here enjoying the theater.”
Despite a few technical Av hiccups, the Upfronts ran like clockwork, with exuberant presenters giving succinct pitches to an involved audience about new-to-market skyscraper penthouses in NYC, $100 million-plus mansions in L.A. and even Hollywood production studios. After his presentation, Fredrik Eklund even joked,...

After she first appeared in Attack of the Clones, The Clone Wars would later delve into Barriss Offee's story and her friendship with Ahsoka Tano.
However, as time passed, she became increasingly convinced that the Jedi Order had lost its way. Radicalized, she bombed the Jedi Temple and framed Ahsoka before later admitting she was behind the attack.
That may have resulted in her old friend's freedom, but the damage was done and Ahsoka left the Order...reinforcing Anakin Skywalker's own growing frustrations with his Masters.
Tales of the Empire finds Barriss behind bars. She sees the attack on the Jedi Temple and is later made an offer by Lyn, a fellow Jedi who is now the Sith Inquisitor known as Fourth Sister.

After a trip to a state appeals court, a lawsuit from actress Hayley Marie Norman accusing ABC, Tracee Ellis Ross and Kenya Barris of lifting ideas from a show she’d been pitching that she alleges was turned into Black-ish spinoff Mixed-ish without her involvement has been dismissed.
The 2nd District Court of Appeal found that the lawsuit shouldn’t have been allowed to proceed against Ross and Artists First, a production and management company that counts her and Barris among its clients. It said, in a ruling issued on Tuesday, that “all of Norman’s claims arise from protected activity,” reversing the trial court and delivering a finishing blow to her lawsuit.
In a statement, Michael Plonsker, a lawyer for Norman, said “We strongly do not agree with the appellate decision.”

Kenya Barris was deeply inspired by “The Cosby Show” when he created “Black-ish” in 2014. The writer and executive producer wanted to create a similarly beloved family sitcom that was expressly Black, not only with the characters, but also in the subject matter the show covered. That mission was achieved, and like “The Cosby Show,” “Black-ish” went on to spawn a TV universe that would also make an impact.
“Grown-ish” was the first “Black-ish” spinoff. It has now gone six seasons and will air its 100th episode this month. Similar to “A Different World” with Lisa Bonet’s Denise Huxtable from “The Cosby Show,” “grown-ish” has chronicled the college adventures of “Black-ish” characters Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) and later Andre Johnson Jr. (Marcus Scribner). “Grown-ish” has become a tentpole series for Freeform, according to Simran Sethi, exec VP of programming and content at Freeform and ABC.

Diarra From Detroit is a clever, humorous mystery dramedy with an intelligent, irreverent sleuth that will have you laughing one minute and on the edge of your seat the next. Rapper Vince Staples plays a semi-fictionalized version of himself in “The Vince Staples Show,” debuting today on Netflix. The comedy, which skewers celebrity culture and depicts Staples’ surreal adventures, comes after roles in the films “Dope” and “White Boys Can’t Jump” and series like “Insecure” and “Abbott Elementary.”
Your character’s relationship with money is an important theme of the show. Why did you want to explore that?
It’s a big part of what we deem to be celebrity, and it’s extremely subjective. You ask a lot of people who know me personally, and I’m hyper-successful and I’ve made it to the upper echelon. But most people who live in the world don’t know who Vince Staples is. I think that’s a very interesting thing as far as how we perceive success or fame.
Many of the episodes start in reality but take surreal turns.

Way back in 2020, during the height of the pandemic, we saw reports that filmmaker Kenya Barris was set to write and direct a film based on the life of iconic comedian, Richard Pryor. However, like so many projects in the works at that time, we haven’t really heard much about it over the past few years. But according to Barris, not only is the project still alive and well, but it’s actually turned into a TV series.

Kenya Barris joined the Variety Studio presented by Audible at the Sundance Film Festival and provided some new updates on three of his most high-profile new projects. It was announced back in 2020 that Barris was set to direct a biopic on Richard Pryor, one of the most influential comedians of all time. The project remains in development, only Barris now confirmed that it’s actually a television series.
“It’s a 10-part limited biographical series that takes a look from cradle to grave,” Barris said. “From his earliest upbringing — he grew up in a ho house, or a house of ill repute — and became, at one point, the biggest star in the world.”
Barris said he is “in the room with it right now” as far as the development on the Richard Pryor series, adding, “It is my baby. I love it. He is my comedy god. A super flawed guy,...

Netflix is ready to debut its scripted comedy featuring rapper Vince Staples.
The Vince Staples Show, which was created by Staples, Ian Edelman and Maurice Williams and EPed by Kenya Barris, will premiere on February 15.
The comedy was first announced in 2022.
Set in Long Beach, CA, the fictional series is loosely inspired by Staples’ life. Here’s the official logline: Who’s Vince Staples? Well, that’s a tricky question. He’s kind of famous, but he’s not. He’s kind of rich, but he’s not. He’s also kind of a criminal. But he’s…not? Follow him on his daily adventures, where anything that can go wrong usually does.
The show is executive produced by Staples, Barris (Khalabo Ink Society), Corey Smyth, Edelman (Edelgang), Williams, and William Stefan Smith.

The first poster for The Vince Staples Show, the Netflix series premiering Feb. 15, features the rapper with a gnarly black eye — and its trailer finds him dodging bullets, greedy family members, and jail time. Still, Staples isn’t even a little fazed by any of it.
“Anything interesting happen?” Andrea Ellsworth’s character asks Staples, who mentally recalls getting stomped out by a mascot, brawls at a cookout, and an impromptu hangout with Rick Ross — downing lemon pepper wings — before responding simply: “Not really.

Deadline has confirmed that Byron Allen is taking another run at BET Media Group in a $3.5 billion bid sent to Paramount Global for BET and VH1. The offer followed a report that Paramount is in talks to sell BET to a management-led investor group.
Paramount put BET Media Group fielded offers for BET earlier this year, receiving bids from Allen, Tyler Perry and others, but took it off the table after determining that the offers weren’t high enough.
During an event in Atlanta, Perry said that he wasn’t a fan of the process. “I was disappointed about it for a number of reasons. The way it happened was disrespectful in a lot of ways,” he said, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Chuck Barris, who hosted such gleefully trashy TV hits as The Gong Show and The $1.98 Beauty Show back in the 1970s, was an interesting man, to say the least. He once worked on American Bandstand. He wrote a song that made the Top 5 during the peak of Beatlemania. He created The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game in the ’60s. And the rumor, of course, was that Barris had been a CIA assassin at various times in different parts of the world. That claim was part of his autobiography, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, which George Clooney turned into a movie in 2002. Though Barris was still alive at the time (he died in 2017 at the age of 87), Clooney told us he never asked Barris whether the CIA claims were true. You People was received with mixed reviews from critics, with suggestions of portrayals of antisemitism. A fitfully taut but fatally underwritten thriller about an affluent white family and the undocumented El Salvadorian housekeepers they decide to shelter — or imprison? — in their dungeon-like basement for days on end as Ice raids sweep through Los Angeles, Augustus Meleo Bernstein’s “At the Gates” seems determined to offer a claustrophobic American twist on “Parasite.” Absent the opulent style and satirical fury that made Bong Joon Ho’s film such a cross-cultural watershed, however, this similarly genre-inflected caricature of socioeconomic inequality turns instead to the looming specter of deportation — and the Holocaust allusions built into its premise — to embellish a story that unfolds across our country on a regular basis.
While that trade-off proves understandable given the stakes at play here, it’s not a trade-off this half-baked exercise in single-location suspense can afford to make. “At the Gates” convincingly argues that self-involved U.S. citizens are blind or...

At The Gates is an entertaining and timely thriller that blends the hot button topic of illegal immigration and undocumented workers into a universal story of fear, paranoia, and the perilous state of our own humanity. That it succeeds to the degree it does is the fact that first time feature writer/director Augustus Meleo Bernstein keeps us guessing as to the intentions and the ultimate fate of its tight circle of main characters. Essentially this is a chamber piece all set in one attractive Los Angeles area suburb’s home and the class drama taking place inside that seems ripped from headlines of individual tragic stories of illegal immigrants who have to worry at any given moment when Ice is going to show up at their doorstep, or in the case of At The Gates, at the doorstep of their employers.

The life of many an undocumented domestic worker is marked by fear. The threat of deportation may feel remote at times, but it hovers over them nonetheless — and structures their experience in ways both big and small. Exploiting such paranoia, Augustus Meleo Bernstein’s provocative if listless “At the Gates” creates a scenario where a housekeeper and her teenage son must trust her employers when Ice agents (or so they’re told) arrive in search of them both. Aiming to be a tense drama about trust, the film struggles to balance the personal and cultural stakes at the heart of its neat conceit.
When Ana arrives at her employer’s lavish home with her son Nico (Ezekiel Pacheco) in tow, she expects that day to be like many before. She’s worked for Marianne (Miranda Otto) and Peter Barris (Noah Wyle) for months now and takes pride in what she does.

After five months off the air, a staple of broadcast television is back. This week marks the return of late night following the conclusion of the WGA strike.
Just like the 2007-2008 writers’ strike, late night shows were the first to be impacted. The day after the WGA announced it was going on strike in May, “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” all closed up shop. The meeting, which became a hot topic of conversation around Hollywood earlier this week, has been pushed after the WGA and AMPTP agreed to hold new talks aimed at ending the work stoppage that has been going on since May.
Deadline understands that the cancellation of the meeting, which was set to happen today, was a mutual decision as the guild tries to figure out its plan for its latest showdown with the studios.
Yesterday, the AMPTP and the WGA revealed that they would schedule talks next week.
The AMPTP said that the two parties are “working to schedule a meeting next week.”
“On Wednesday, September 13, the WGA reached out to the AMPTP and asked for a meeting to move negotiations forward. We have agreed and are working to schedule a meeting next week.

As the writers strike labors on in its 20th week, hundreds of showrunners united in a show of solidarity at Fox in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, some of the television industry’s top creators are set to meet with the Writers Guild of America’s top leadership Friday for a high-level status update on where negotiations stand.
Sources say Kenya Barris (Black-ish), Noah Hawley (Fargo) and Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) are among a small contingent who had sought out a meeting with the WGA negotiating committee co-chair Chris Keyser and other union officials. The buzz about a showrunner meeting first surfaced late last week and was fueled over the weekend until eventually plans for two different meetings were scrapped after fears emerged that the mere idea could be considered a crack in the WGA’s solidarity.

After more than four months on strike, many showrunners are getting restless.
Writers Guild of America leaders are fielding a stepped-up volume of inquiries from prominent members who are frustrated with the duration of the work stoppage and looking to understand the guild’s strategy in engaging with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. In response to this heightened activity, multiple sources say several guild leaders are set to meet in person with a group of showrunners on Friday at WGA West headquarters.
A WGA West communications rep declined to comment, but Chris Keyser, who is co-chair of the WGA negotiating committee, told Variety via text message, “We have conversations with members every day. I’m not commenting on individual ones.”
The message that several different clusters of showrunners are trying to send to guild leaders is clear: “It’s not ‘We’re coming after you’ but ‘How can we help?...

A group of top-tier showrunners including Kenya Barris and Noah Hawley has set a meeting with the WGA leadership as they try to aid the negotiating process.
The move is not a sign of discontent among the guild, as rumored by some, but rather a chance to bring more high-profile folks into the process as the writers strike has moved into its fourth month.
We hear that Black-ish creator Barris, Hawley, the man behind FX’s Fargo and its upcoming Alien series, and others are set to sit down with leadership on Friday at the WGA West’s L.A. headquarters.
“This was meant to be an information session and not meant to offer anything more than help,” a source close to events told Deadline. “That is still the intention so we can all get a fair deal to get back to work.”

Update: 10 Pm Pt 9/11 — Updated with response from WGA.
The Writers Guild of America canceled a scheduled meeting with top Hollywood showrunners, including Kenya Barris and Noah Hawley, on Monday after a week of intense bickering over whether the guild was adequately seeking a resolution to the entertainment industry’s crippling four-month-old strike, TheWrap has learned.
Barris (“Black-ish”), Hawley (“Fargo”) and numerous powerful showrunners have been demanding answers from WGA negotiating leadership — namely chief negotiator Ellen Stutzman and committee co-chairs Chris Keyser and David A. Goodman — to ensure that the guild was motivated to get to a deal.
The showrunners began to reach out for clarification last Tuesday, and the exchanges with WGA leadership was described to TheWrap by an individual with knowledge as intense and emotional, with phone calls between individual showrunners and guild leaders leading to fights, shouting matches and “screaming hangups,” as the individual put it.

BET Media Group is staying put, as Paramount Global has decided against selling its majority stake in the company.
Paramount Global began exploring the sale in March as part of an effort to generate cash to strengthen its flagship Paramount+ streaming service. But on Wednesday, according to Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, the company informed bidders the sale won’t happen as it won’t generate a significant enough amount of money.
Representatives for Paramount Global didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from TheWrap.
Interested buyers included Tyler Perry and Byron Allen, both of whom expressed immediate interest in March and were in talks to acquire BET Media. NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal also joined the fray in partnership Group Black, rapper and producer 50 Cent and “Black-Ish” creator Kenya Barris.

Latto is building up her IMDb page. Earlier this week, the rapper made her acting debut in an episode of Freeform’s Grown-ish as the smooth-talking wine sales representative Sloane. During the episode, she stops by a winery to drop off a delivery for Doug (Diggy Simmons) and snags a date — as well as her commission. “You can’t rush fine wine…or fine women,” she tells him.
And she isn’t in a rush to totally transition from music to acting either, but Latto has enjoyed dipping her toe into the water.

After hearing early demos from Kid Cudi, director Fletcher Moules knew he could connect with the vision of bringing a visual album to life through animation. Serving as an animated companion piece to Kid Cudi’s album of the same name, Entergalactic follows street artist Jabari (Cudi) as he is on the cusp of bringing his art to life in comics. His life changes when he falls for his neighbor Meadow (Jessica Williams), a photographer about to stage an exhibition. It was important for Moules that this special be a character-driven concept album, rather than one long music video, so the story and animation style were essential to get right.
‘Entergalactic’
Deadline: Where did the concept for Entergalactic come from?
Fletcher Moules: [Kid] Cudi had the idea. “Entergalactic” was the name of one of his songs from many years ago on an early album, and he wanted to visualize his music.

“White Men Can’t Jump” holds a special place in a lot of moviegoers’ hearts; while not the enduring sports classic that writer-director Ron Shelton delivered with his baseball mash note “Bull Durham,” the buddy comedy vividly captures the world of pick-up basketball players, and features three standout performances by Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson and Rosie Perez. Director Calmatic’s 2023 remake not only fails to recapture the energy of the first film but seems to misunderstand the cinematic language of streetball, and is largely uninterested in utilizing stars Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow except as delivery systems for exposition.
Updated only in its excess of contemporary slang and overwrought backstories, “White Men Can’t Jump” exemplifies the aversion to risk and lack of imagination in storytellers mining intellectual property at the behest of blandest-common-denominator-seeking corporate overlords.

Here’s the official synopsis:
White Men Can’t Jump is a modern retelling of the iconic 1992 film that celebrates the streetball hustling culture of Los Angeles. Rapper Jack Harlow is set to make his acting debut in Kenya Barris’ reboot of White Men Can’t Jump, and Hulu has shared a new trailer ahead of the film’s premiere next month.
In the clip, Harlow’s streetball skills are established when he makes more baskets than his soon-to-be partner Kamal (Sinqua Walls). Before they team up, however, Harlow’s Jeremy takes offense to being underestimated with cringeworthy lines like, “You assumed I couldn’t hoop because I’m white, which is incredibly outdated.” Kamal responds by calling him out for dressing like “a white girl at Whole Foods.”
The movie is a remake of Ron Shelton’s 1992 film of the same name starring Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes, and centers around the story of Jeremy and Kamal getting on the same page while trying to win a $500,000 basketball tournament. Along the way, they balance “tenuous relationships, financial pressures,...

‘White Men Can’t Jump’ Trailer: 20th Century Studios’ Remake Of The ’90s Classic Hits Hulu On May 19
Did anyone ask for a “White Men Can’t Jump” remake? Doubtful, but the ’90s classic gets the reboot treatment thanks to screenwriters Kenya Barris and Doug Hall. A property like this could be in worse hands, though. Barris — creator of “Black-ish” and “Grown-ish” — is no stranger to the remake game. He’s been involved with updates of “Shaft” and “Cheaper by the Dozen,” with an “Uptown Saturday Night” reimagining also in development.

Peacock has scored another win with Rian Johnson’s whodunnit series “Poker Face.” The original comedy series opened at No. 3 on Nielsen’s Streaming Original Series Top 10 chart, making it Peacock’s highest-ranked original series to ever hit the chart. During the Jan. 23-29 viewing window, the show recorded 547 million minutes viewed in the first four days of availability with its four-episode opening.
The series also marks the streamer’s highest-ranking original comedy to crack the chart. “The Best Man: The Final Chapters” was Peacock’s first original series to land on Nielsen’s Top 10 list — opening at No. 5 during the Dec. 19-25 viewing period. Prior to the revival series taking the crown, the streamer’s drama “Bel-Air” previously held the title for Peacock’s biggest ever series debut.
Starring Natasha Lyonne, the 10-episode mystery-of-the-week series follows Charlie, an eccentric detective with the extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying.

Kenya Barris, the creator-writer-producer behind titles like “Black-ish,” “Grown-ish” and “America’s Next Top Model,” has proven himself to be one of television’s most reliable hitmakers. More importantly, he knows how to get people talking.
On Jan. 23, Barris made his directorial debut with “You People.” The comedy instantly soared to the top of the Netflix charts, racking up more than 65.61 million viewing hours to date. That number is proportionate to the avalanche of heated posts, op-eds and reviews that flooded the internet as soon as the trailer dropped.
A modern take on the forbidden lovers’ tale, with a heavy amount of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “You People” finds an interracial couple at the crosshairs of the culture wars. Ezra is white and Jewish; Amira (Lauren London) is Black and Muslim. These differences prove disastrous when it comes to their families. Riddled with white guilt, Ezra’s mother Shelley (Julia Louis-Dreyfus...

Writer, producer, and filmmaker Kenya Barris has had a hand in some of the most talked-about movies and shows of the past decade. From creating "black-ish" and its spin-offs, to penning the 2017 hit comedy "Girls Trip," to writing reboots and sequels to popular movies like "Coming To America" and "White Men Can't Jump," Barris stays busy — even if his projects often court controversy. Surprisingly, though, Barris' new Netflix rom-com "You People" is the first film the prolific writer has also helmed as director.
In an interview with Forbes, Barris explained why he hasn't taken a seat in the director's chair for a feature film until now. "I've been asked to do one a bunch of times, but I knew whatever it was that I directed, I definitely wanted to write," the filmmaker said. "The things I had written before they asked me to do, I felt like I was in the middle of running shows.
