Created by writer Chris Roberson and artist Michael Allred, the comic book series "iZombie" from DC Comics' Vertigo quickly became a hit amongst comic readers. In 2011, the comic earned an Eisner Award nomination for Best New Series, notably for its unique balance of dark comedy and brain-eating adventures. "iZombie" ran for 28 issues, following a gravedigger named Gwen Dylan, who needs to eat one brain per month to survive. However, Gwen inherits some of the deceased's thoughts and traits each time she snacks on a brain. Roberson and Allred's concept put an inventive and otherwordly spin on the adage, "You are what you eat."

Way back in September, DC’s second FanDome event dropped a huge announcement: DC Universe, the all-encompassing DC entertainment streaming app that featured comics, movies, and TV shows from the DC catalog, would narrow its focus to comics, becoming an app called DC Universe Infinite.
The new app launches on Jan. 21 and brings with is a slew of changes, many of them for the better — at least if comics are what you’re looking for. Den of Geek got an early peek under the hood of the app and we have plenty of good news to share.
How It Works

Hellboy Universe: The Secret Histories collects in hardcover for the first time three acclaimed stories that shed new light on the hidden corners of the Hellboy universe: Rasputin: The Voice of the Dragon, Sledgehammer 44, and The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed.

I looked at a Michael Moorcock “Eternal Champion” comic — primarily by other hands — a couple of months ago, and noted that Moorcock made several attempts overt the years to end that series. Well, I’m back with another EC book, from 2011. And that era is, as far as I can tell, well after the point when Moorcock realized the EC would outlive him, and that he only needed to give it as much attention as he felt like at any moment.
What I mean is: he seems to have given up on closing out the series, which is all to the good. What sense does it make to have an ending for the Eternal Champion?
This series is titled for the most popular (and first) incarnation of the EC, Elric, but he’s joined by several others — Dorian Hawkmoon, Corum of the Silver Hand, and a guy from what I...

Can you believe it? 25 years of Hellboy? The comic's first San Diego Comic-Con outing was in 1993 (the con at that time occurred between August 19th-22nd), and to celebrate, Dark Horse Comics is pulling out all the stops, as the company has revealed three new Hellboy titles: Hellboy Winter Special 2018, Crimson Lotus, and Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1956:
Press Release: Milwaukie, Ore.,—In 1993, legendary comic book creator Mike Mignola’s most famous creation, Hellboy, first appeared in a four page, black and white story in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2, months ahead of his full issue comic book debut in Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. Co-published by Dark Horse Comics, this story introduced one of the most beloved comic book characters in history and launched what would become known as the Mignolaverse — the strange, shared universe of comic books and graphic novels, comprised of acclaimed titles including Hellboy and the B.

So the big Hellboy story is over — it’s been over longer than most people think, as I argued when I wrote about the second volume of Hellboy in Hell. But Hellboy is still a valuable piece of intellectual property, with a potential movie reboot still kicking around in the background somewhere. So there has to be some Hellboy product coming out on a regular basis, to help keep the lights on at Dark Horse and to keep Mike Mignola busy.
Well, maybe that’s too cynical a view of things. Hellboy is an interesting, fun character, and his history contains vast swaths of space and time to throw additional stories into. It’s not impossible that Mignola and his collaborators are really, really enthusiastic about all of those possibilities and that Mignola is taking on such a large number of collaborators and doing a whole lot of unrelated one-off...

Another day, another Hellboy spinoff. It’s not quite that frequent in the real world, but it certainly can seem that way. (And I did just talk about The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed yesterday.)
Rise of the Black Flame is another unnecessary book, which fills in backstory that wasn’t required the first time around. Of course, all fiction is unnecessary if you think of things that way — but this is material that explains how one character got the beginning of another story when we already had “he was subsumed by some alien evil power,” and that was good enough.
Again, for me basically every single “mainstream” comic is totally unnecessary — who does Spider-Man fight this month? which character will have a shocking death touted in press releases three months ahead? does any of it track back to anything at all from the original creators? — so this is a very minor complaint.
Rise of the Black Flame is another unnecessary book, which fills in backstory that wasn’t required the first time around. Out of all the eclectic characters who inhabit the universe of Mike Mignola's Hellboy universe, the Visitor, an alien assassin who spared the demon's life is perhaps one of the most intriguing. Thankfully, Dark Horse's new comic book series The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed will shed more light on the mysterious alien, and with the first issue coming out tomorrow, we caught up with Chris Roberson (iZombie) to discuss collaborating with Mike Mignola on the new Hellboy series.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Chris. How did you get involved with The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed?
Chris Roberson: The series came out of a long lunch that I had with Mike Mignola and our editor Scott Allie the winter before last. I was wrapping up work on Witchfinder: City of the Dead, and we got to talking about other...

In addition to creating the ComicsPRO exclusive cover for the first issue of The Visitor, renowned artist Mignola also co-wrote the five-issue series with iZombie co-creator Chris Roberson, who told us:

Given that it was the first to wrap its season, it makes perfect sense that Warner Home Entertainment would unleash the complete second season of the CW’s iZombie on disc ahead of the superheroes coming in August. The 4-disc DVD set is coming on Tuesday while Warner Archive will be simultaneously releasing iZombie the Complete First Season and iZombie the Complete Second Season on Blu-ray.
The series is loosely based on the Chris Roberson and Michael Allred Vertigo series and is a quiet success, garnering solid ratings and reviews but without the sturm and drang of its fellow DC properties. In the hands of executive producers Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars) and Diane Ruggiero-Wright (The Ex List), they keep the mood light, the characters quirky, and the plots engaging.

A quiet night at home turns into a frightening game of cat-and-mouse in the official trailer for IFC Midnight’s Intruder. Also in today’s Horror Highlights: a trailer and release details for the John Bradley-starring film Traders, teaser videos and release information for The Dooms Chapel Horror, and the cover art and details for the first issue of Dark Horse’s Rise of the Black Flame comic book series.
Watch the Trailer for Intruder: “A young woman’s quiet night in becomes a free-fall into fear in this disturbing home invasion thriller. After she lands her dream job, a young cellist (Louise Linton) settles in for a relaxing few days holed up in her apartment but as a violent storm rages outside, she can’t shake the feeling that someone is watching her every move. Cleverly toying with the rules of suspense, director Travis Z wrings maximum terror from everyone’s worst nightmare: you may not be alone.”
Written and directed by Travis Zariwny, Intruder stars Louise Linton, John Robinson, and Moby. The film will be released theatrically in New York and on VOD nationwide on June 24th courtesy of IFC Midnight.”

Traders Trailer, Poster, and Release Details: Press Release: “Desperate times call for desperate measures, but the scheme at the center of Traders may be the most desperate of all. The twist-filled suspense drama in which young men risk their lives to get ahead stars John Bradley (Samwell from Game of Thrones) and Killian Scott. Traders will be available on Digital Platforms and Cable VOD on July 11, 2016.
Jobs are gone. Homes are being repossessed. Suicide rates are soaring. But newly unemployed Vernon Stynes (John Bradley, Game of Thrones) might have the solution to the despair brought on by recession. He masterminds a diabolical, all-or-nothing plan he calls Trading. Through an underground online network of similarly displaced individuals, two people agree to “trade” by emptying their bank accounts, selling everything they own and putting the cash in nondescript green bags. They then travel to a remote location, dig a grave and fight to the death. Winner buries the loser and takes the two bags.
Then you find someone else and do it again, and again, and again, until you are rich enough or dead, whichever comes first. Like Vernon, Harry Fox (Killian Scott, Calvary, Love/Hate) has lost his job and his dignity. What else has he got to lose? Why not become a Trader? But when Trading becomes an alarmingly popular underground phenomenon, Vernon becomes a participant in the very game he created. Featuring an exciting young cast and sure to appeal to fans of such classics as Shallow Grave and Fight Club, Traders is a daring and troubling look at the depths to which ordinary people can be driven.

Rise of the Black Flame #1 (of 5) Release Details & Cover Art: “Press Release: “Milwaukie, Or— This September, legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola,iZOMBIE co-creator Chris Roberson, Criminal Macabre and 30 Days of Night artist Christopher Mitten, award winning colorist Dave Stewart and cover artist Laurence Campbell will present Rise Of The Black Flame. This five issue miniseries from Dark Horse Comics will present a dark horror story about an ancient, evil power. In Rise Of The Black Flame, young girls are going missing from the cities of Siam, and the trail leads to the jungle hideout of a bloodthirsty cult– the Cult of the Black Flame.
“There have been several villains in Hellboy’s world who’ve been called the Black Flame, and the striking visual of a skeleton burning with dark flames is pretty hard to beat,” said co-writer Chris Roberson. “In Rise Of The Black Flame, we reveal that before there was a man called the Black Flame, there was an ancient cult hidden deep in the jungles of Southeast Asia known by that name. We plumb the depths of cruelty and ruthlessness that groups of people are capable of reaching, and explore how this cult which reaches back to prehistoric times is connected to the most dangerous villain in the history of the Hellboy books.”
“After all these years it’s still so exciting to find new corners (or in this case a giant shadowy, uncharted abyss of horror) of the Hellboy world left to explore,” said Mike Mignola.
In addition to Rise Of The Black Flame, Roberson and Mignola will be co-writing Hellboy & The Bprd: 1954 and Witchfinder: City Of The Dead. Rise Of The Black Flame will mark the Mignolaverse debut of artist Christopher Mitten.
“It is tremendous fun–and a little surreal–to be given the chance to dive into this fantastic universe,” said Christopher Mitten. “Mike and Chris (with whom I’ve long wanted to work) have concocted a fantastic story, and then there’s Dave Stewart…I mean, Knowing Dave would be coloring and then actually Seeing his artistry in action are two wholly different things. Getting a chance to dip my toe into this expansive world has made me want to dig in and explore more of it, to go off into little corners and find what strangeness, what beauty, lurks there.”
Rise Of The Black Flame #1 (of 5) goes on sale from Dark Horse Comics on September 7. Preorder your copy today at your local comic shop!”

With iZombie recently having concluded its phenomenal second season, many fans have probably been wondering when they will be able to add it to their shelves. On July 12, you’ll be able to view all 19 episodes of the sophomore season on either DVD or Blu-Ray, but there’s a catch: only the DVD set will find its way into retail stores, while the Blu-Ray will be released online via Warner Archive and can be purchased through Amazon and other such sites.
Furthermore, the first season will finally see a Blu-Ray release that very same day, which will also be available exclusively online. Fans of the show have been clamoring to see it in all of its brain eating glory on Blu-Ray since last year, so it’s good that WB came through. Season One had previously seen only a DVD release and is not exactly the...

Thoughts on tonight's "iZombie" coming up just as soon as I'm thick with justice... On the one hand, the idea behind the Brain of the Week story in "Cape Town" requires a hell of a lot of buy-in, and/or a complete reconceptualizing of the show. Sci-fi, horror, and, yes, superhero stories work best when there's some kind of grounding to the material beyond the key fantastical elements. You have to go into a Spider-Man comic accepting that he can cling to walls and has a danger sense, but on some level, Peter Parker has to work as a character, and his New York has to have some resemblance to the real one, even if it's constantly being menaced by supervillains. With "iZombie," we accept that zombies are real, and that Blaine has helped to create a whole ecosystem for them to continue to walk among us without detection. To...

The CW has released an extended look at next week’s brand new episode of iZombie, “Cape Town,” which will serve as the mid-season finale. This one should make for an interesting viewing not only because it will likely feature all of the edge-of-your-seat moments that you would expect from a mid-season finale, but also because the only currently running TV show based on a DC Entertainment property that does not feature superheroes will dabble in that genre.
You see, Liv and the gang will investigate the murder of a vigilante named Chris Allred (a nod to iZombie comic book creators Chris Roberson and Michael Allred), who has adopted the moniker “The Fog.” If you guessed that Liv feels the need to be a superhero upon consuming his brain, then you guessed correctly.

Pull up a chair and join us for a rundown of all the biggest comics stories from the past seven days, from the surprising inspiration for a new Asterix character to a new Superman just like the old Superman.
Julian Assange inspires an Asterix character
Writer Jean-Yves Ferri and artist Didier Conrad have turned to a surprising inspiration for a new character in the 36th book in the classic French comic series, Asterix and the Missing Scroll.
The journalist called Confoundtheirpolitix - a character caught up in the battle against Julius Caesar's propaganda machine - was inspired by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
According to Agence France-Presse, he came close to being named Wikilix, which would have been no more on the nose than your average Asterix character (we're looking at you, old man Geriatrix).

Chris Roberson and Michael Allred created a charming little series for Vertigo called iZombie and it got snatched up by the CW for a television. Unfortunately, the 28-issue comic was long gone by the time the show arrived this past winter. For 13 episodes, we were treated to a slightly off-kilter series that proved to be very enchanting in its own right and viewers embraced it well enough for a full season renewal. While the second season debuts tonight, Warner Home Video has released iZombie: The Complete First Season on DVD. Interestingly, unlike other releases from DC Entertainment, this one does not have a Blu-ray companion.
What makes the series fun is the approach taken by series developers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright, a pair who know a thing or two about offbeat projects. After all, they gave us the wonderful Veronica Mars. Now they have taken another female-centric show and...
