Say goodbye to Luca Guadagnino’s “Scarface” movie.
The “Challengers” and “Call Me by Your Name” director confirmed to The Hindu that he is no longer attached to helm a reinterpretation of the iconic mobster movie. Guadagnino was first attached to “Scarface” in 2020, with Ethan and Joel Coen writing the script.
“I’m not working on ‘Scarface’ anymore,” Guadagnino told the outlet in November 2023.
He later added of adaptations in general, “For me, when approaching any book adaptation or remake, it’s about understanding what the story carries within itself that goes beyond the form of the original work. So that you can tell that story from a completely different perspective. Whether it’s fresh or not, I cannot tell. But it’s different.”

Four years ago, it was announced that Universal was moving forward with a remake of their 1996 teen stalker thriller Fear (watch it Here), which starred Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon. Fear producer Brian Grazer was back to produce the new version, which got far enough that Straight Outta Compton‘s Jonathan Herman was writing the screenplay and Amandla Stenberg (Bodies Bodies Bodies) was cast in the lead role. Then it fell apart… But there’s still life in Fear. Variety has broken the news that a series inspired by the film is now in development at the Peacock streaming service, coming our way from Universal Television.
Jessica Goldberg, creator of the Hulu series The Path, is writing and executive producing this new take on Fear, which has the following synopsis:

In the late 1990s, after teaching herself screenplay structure by way of reading Viki King’s seminal go-to manual “How to Write a Movie in 21 Days,” Andrea Berloff emerged with her first feature script titled “Liberty,” a comedy set in a small-town Ohio dart tournament.
“I had no idea at that point that there were three acts in a movie — I’d never had a class in it,” says Berloff, who cut her teeth as a theater major at Cornell U., poring over Greek tragedies and Shakespeare’s dramas.
And while “very few people read that script,” the friends who gave “Liberty” a look served as “encouragement to keep writing,” says Berloff, who would go on to option her second, the biopic “Harry and Caresse” to Fine Line (the then-specialty division of New Line) in 2003, pen the Oliver Stone drama “World Trade Center” and net an Academy Award nomination for co-writ- ing,...

It was recently announced that Dwayne Johnson would be rebooting The Scorpion King through his Seven Bucks Productions company, with the new spin on the story set to take place in the modern day. The 2002 movie marked Johnson’s first lead role in a feature film while he was still a full-time professional wrestler, and it did solid business at the box office after raking in close to $180 million on a $60 million budget.
The Scorpion King was a cheesy B-tier adventure that wouldn’t have been out of place during Ray Harryhausen’s heyday back in the 1960s, and the sort of inoffensively bland actioner that doesn’t require much of your attention. It did spawn four straight to video sequels, though, all of which were about as terrible as you’d expect, but the world’s highest-paid star must have a soft spot for the material if he’s...

“I believe Jonathan Herman will put in the hard work to deliver a fantastic script for our global audience,” Johnson added, touting the screenwriter, who earned an Oscar nod for 2015’s “Straight Outta Compton.”

Dwayne Johnson is easily the world’s highest-paid actor at this point, but he’s been raking in massive paydays almost since the very start of his movie career. For instance, despite only having a minor supporting role in the project, Johnson was paid $5 million for signing on to The Mummy Returns, which is a massive fee for a first time actor.
Of course, that appearance led to his own spinoff in the form of The Scorpion King, where he once again pulled in some serious cash after picking up a check for $5.5 million. The movie itself wasn’t anything particularly special, offering up enjoyable but unremarkable B-level action fare. Still, it did decent enough business at the box office after scoring almost $180 million on a $60 million budget. And now, it seems Universal is keen to hit the reboot button on the property.

With Johnson booked through 2022, the studio will look to tap a new actor to play the action hero as well as a director to steer the ship. It appears the Scarface remake has a new friend in the director’s chair, but his resume isn’t that little. Indeed, Universal Pictures announced Thursday that Luca Guadagnino, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind 2017’s Call Me By Your Name, has been tapped to direct the long-gestating Scarface reboot.
The news comes paired with the announcement that Guadagnino will be working from the version of the screenplay written by Joel and Ethan Coen, who know a thing or two about crime dramas after making such films as Fargo and No Country for Old Men. Their version is additionally built off earlier drafts by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Jonathan Herman, and Paul Attanasio.
The hiring of Guadagnino is the latest chapter in an ever-growing saga of musical director chairs on the project. A new Scarface remake has long been a priority for Universal Pictures, which first began developing the film in 2011. In addition to various screenplay drafts,...

Director Luca Guadagnino has added yet another project to his packed slate of upcoming films and television. According to Variety, the Academy Award-nominated “Call Me By Your Name” and “I Am Love” filmmaker is now set to helm a retelling of “Scarface” for Universal Pictures. The script for this latest version comes from Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, working from earlier drafts by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (the “Miss Bala” remake), Jonathan Herman (“Straight Outta Compton”), and Paul Attanasio (“Quiz Show”).
The mythic crime story of Scarface has been told many a time in cinema, from the 1932 Howard Hawks original starring Paul Muni, to Brian De Palma’s lurid Miami-set take, from 1983, with Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer. Guadagnino’s version will reportedly be a reimagining of the original immigrant narrative established in both those films, and this time will be set in Los Angeles.

After a streak of projects with A Bigger Splash, Call Me by Your Name, and Suspiria in the back half of the last decade, director Luca Guadagnino has taken his time to decide what to helm next. Most recently he was prepping a Bob Dylan adaptation with Blood on the Tracks, but with his former collaborator Timothée Chalamet getting his own Dylan biopic, we haven’t heard any updates. Now, it looks like he’s finally set his sights on a new film–and it’s certainly an expected choice.
Variety reports he’s getting back into the I.P. reimagining game and will direct the long-gestating reboot of Scarface for Universal. Scripted by none other than Joel and Ethan Coen, who expanded on earlier drafts by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Jonathan Herman and Paul Attanasio, this modern update will be set in Los Angeles following a Mexican immigrant.

In a summer dominated by comic book movies and tentpole blockbusters, one of the season’s biggest counter-programming plays is “The Kitchen.” The 1970s crime drama from writer-director Andrea Berloff is opening this August from Warner Bros. pictures and promises a more serious-minded alternative to all the mind-numbing spectacle of comic book movies and Disney live-action remakes. Excitingly, “The Kitchen” brings together Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss, and Tiffany Haddish, the latter of which is set to show off her dramatic acting chops for the first time on the big screen.
Based on the first trailer below, “The Kitchen” is more or less a riff on Steve McQueen’s “Widows.” McCarthy, Moss, and Haddish star as the wives of convicted Irish mobsters who are forced to take over the criminal empire in order to ensure their families’ safety. The supporting cast includes Domhnall Gleeson, Common, Bill Camp, Margo Martindale, and James Badge Dale,...

Variety reports that discussions are underway for Fuqua to direct, but no official offer is on the table yet.

In a surprise to nobody, Universal has officially dropped the summer 2018 release date it had planned for its latest remake of Scarface. Given that it’s been without a director since Suicide Squad’s David Ayer left the film last summer, and not a frame of footage had been shot, the delay was expected.

Channing Tatum is set to star in and produce a new film project set up at Universal Pictures called Bloodlines. The film is based on a book by Melissa Del Bosque called Bloodlines: The True Story of a Drug Cartel, the FBI, and the Battle for a Horse-Racing Dynasty.
The story follows "two FBI agents — one of them a rookie — as they work to take down members of a drug cartel wrapped up with quarter horse racing in Texas."
Tatum will most likely play one of the these FBI agent characters. I'm a big fan of the actor and this seems like it will be a great new project for him to be a part of.
There's no director attached to the movie yet, but the script will be written by Jonathan Herman, who received an Academy Award nomination for Straight Outta Compton.

Channing Tatum is to delve into the murky world of drugs cartels in the film adaptation of Melissa Del Bosque’s upcoming novel Bloodlines.
Not only is Tatum set to star in the film but he will be taking to the producer’s chair under his Free Association production company alongside Michael Parets and Fifty Shades of Grey producer Michael De Luca through Michael De Luca Productions.
Bloodlines synopsis reads: Drugs, money, cartels: this is what FBI rookie Scott Lawson expected when he was sent to the border town of Laredo, but instead, he’s desk-bound writing intelligence reports about the drug war. Then, one day, Lawson is asked to check out an anonymous tip: a horse was sold at an Oklahoma auction house for a record-topping price, and the buyer was Miguel Treviño, one of the leaders of the Zetas, Mexico’s most brutal drug cartel.

Ever since a western remake of Akira was tentatively announced more than a decade ago, Hollywood studios have been trying to crack the anime scene. On paper, many of the genre’s more prominent icons – namely Death Note, Alita: Battle Angel and Ghost in the Shell – lend themselves to a big-screen adaptation, what with their rich cyberpunk settings and built-in audience.
The first two properties are currently simmering in various stages of production, meaning it’s Rupert Sanders’ live-action Ghost in the Shell movie that has the honor (burden?) of instigating Hollywood’s new wave of mega-budget anime movies. Pegged for release on March 31st, Paramount has today rolled out yet another featurette that shifts the spotlight over to Section 9, an elite task force formed around The Major. Ghost in the Shell is now only three weeks away from its theatrical release, and the promos continue to pour online. The latest two – one featurette, one blink-and-you’ll-miss-it TV spot – are designed to shed some light on Scarlett Johansson’s ass-kicking Major as she sets off on a journey to discover the truth behind her missing identity.
Engineered to be the flagship product of Hanka Robotics, Johansson’s one-of-a-kind cyborg is deployed onto the streets of neo-Tokyo with one goal in mind: to stamp out any and all terrorism before it bubbles to the surface. Doing so will force The Major on a one-way collision course with Kuze, the chief antagonist of Paramount’s Ghost in the Shell movie.

When Terence Winter was fired from “Vinyl” earlier this year (and it didn’t really matter, since the show was subsequently canceled) he didn’t waste much time turning toward other gigs. He’s penned by Andy Warhol biopic that will star Jared Leto and now he’s bringing his insight to the gangster’s life to a remake of one of the most important movies in the genre.

Prep the powder: Terence Winter—a man who knows a thing or two about scenes involving copious drug consumption—is going to tackle the script for Universal’s Scarface remake, according to Variety. The writing duties for the project have changed hands quite a bit: David Ayer took a stab, as did Straight Outta Compton’s Jonathan Herman. But now, with Antoine Fuqua on board to direct, it will get what Variety calls a “polish” from the capable hands of Winter, known for his work on The Wolf Of Wall Street, Boardwalk Empire, and of late Vinyl.
