Bob Rosenthal, who founded Formosa Group in 2013 and stunned many in the community when he suddenly resigned in the spring of 2023, is returning to the postproduction sound company as president.
The company, which started as an independent entity, is a division of parent company Streamland, whose brands also include Picture Shop and Picture Head. On the heels of Rosenthal’s resignation, company employees had petitioned Streamland, asking it to keep Formosa Group under Rosenthal’s leadership.
“The company was conceived as a singular destination for artists to render their inspiring work within a collaborative and supportive home,” said Rosenthal in a released statement. “Based upon our incredibly talented artists and our dedicated and dynamic leadership team, Formosa Group has established a distinctive environment to best serve content creator’s ideas and attract incredible talent. A judge has sided with Netflix in a legal conflict launched by a famous diver, who claimed that a movie inspired by his life falsely accused him of murder.
Judge Bruce G. Iwasaki granted Netflix’s motion to throw out the lawsuit Tuesday, finding that the diver, Pipin Ferreras, could not prove that the fictional film was about him.
“No Limit” was released on Netflix in September 2022. It tells a story “inspired by real events” of a couple, Pascal Gautier and Roxana Aubrey, who engage in free diving, plunging to extreme depths without an oxygen supply. Roxana dies on a record attempt, with the clear implication that Pascal has sabotaged her equipment.
Ferreras sued for defamation last year, alleging that the film amounted to an accusation that he had killed his wife. Audrey Mestre drowned during a free dive in 2002. Ferreras, who supervised the dive, has since faced intense criticism over his safety practices.

Few questions have loomed larger over the film industry since the pandemic than “How do we save movie theaters?” The streaming boom kept us entertained through years of isolation and provided media companies with a massive influx of content, but no business model has come close to offering the potential profitability and cultural impact of old fashioned theatrical releases. Cultural phenomenons like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have proven that there’s still a large market for great theatrical movies, but some of the country’s top theater and marketing executives stress that one-off successes haven’t solved the industry’s deeper problems.

At the start of an interview with Phil Rosenthal about his food and travel series Somebody Feed Phil, I’m introduced as “Richard” (the company email I used to set up our chat displays my full name). I tell Rosenthal that I go by Rick.
“Ok, good,” he replies. “Because you know, I’m not partial to the name Richard” — which is the name of Rosenthal’s brother, Somebody Feed Phil executive producer and occasional on-camera tormentor Rich Rosenthal.
The tone is thus set for a diverting interview about season seven of Somebody Feed Phil, which premiered March 1 on Netflix. The series has become one of the streamer’s longer-running nonfiction shows, with the eight episodes of the current season bringing its total to 41. The new batch of episodes follows Rosenthal to Mumbai, Washington, D.C., Kyoto, Iceland, Dubai, the “real” Orlando, Taipei and Scotland.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Phil Rosenthal hasn’t been to a country in Asia for his Netflix food travel series “Somebody Feed Phil” since the “Singapore” episode of Season 4 aired in 2020. But with the Season 7 debut Friday, the “Everybody Loves Raymond” creator is back in the east with four out of eight episodes, including an installment featuring one giant bucket-list destination Rosenthal has been anxiously dreaming about for years.
“I’ve always wanted to go to India, so Mumbai was a real thrill for me. I’ve always loved Indian food, I have so many beautiful Indian friends,” Rosenthal told Variety. “But there were two things that kept me away.”
First, he was “afraid” of the ethical complications of doing his goofy bits in a country with such deep contrasts in its population’s standard of living.

When a World War II drama series about airmen features the likes of Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan and Callum Turner, it’s reasonable to presume that one of them would be playing the story’s quintessential hotshot pilot. Instead, that honor belongs to Nate Mann, who portrays Lieutenant Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal, one of the most decorated real-life B-17 pilots to serve in WWII, on Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air. Rosie had already established a successful career as a lawyer in New York until the attack on Pearl Harbor eventually led him to Laredo Air Force Base, where he developed his crack piloting skills.
Knowing full well the significance of Rosenthal both on the screen and in real life, Mann refused to gloss over the details of the B-17 and the many responsibilities that a bomber pilot has before, during and after a flight. So he took the words...

Comida para Phil es una serie creada por Philip Rosenthal.

"Bones" had a massive run on Fox, airing nearly 250 episodes across 12 seasons. Unless streaming changes dramatically, we might never see a run of scripted television like that again. But all along the way, the people working on the show feared they might get canceled. Luckily, they made it all the way to the now-infamous lab explosion that concluded the series. However, the show could have ended very differently had the network canceled it sooner.
Series creator and executive producer Hart Hanson never expected that the show would run as long as it did. Wanting to ensure that the show could end on his terms, he devised several different finales at various points along the way. After the finale aired in 2017, Hanson delved into those plans in an interview with Deadline, when he was asked if he always thought the show would end with the lab being destroyed.

Masters of the Air is into its second act, it seems, as there was a clear shift in storytelling in the sixth episode. There were no missions shown, and for good reason. World War II had many facets, and it did not include just airmen flying their planes and dropping bombs on planned sites. The sixth episode took a different route and showed how some became prisoners of war, while a few became dignitaries at overseas conferences about the war. There was an attempt to isolate Egan’s experience as he tried to escape from Germany. In the previous episode, he had parachuted down to a farm, and it was hinted that he would be caught. Rosenthal had his own struggles, as after three missions he had seen a lot of his pals die and was sent to some sort of relaxation center. Crosby, on the other hand, got a chance to go to Oxford,...

Exclusive: L.A. filmmaker Jacqueline Elyse Rosenthal has won the first edition of Stage 32 and Catalyst Studios’ Empowering Women Script Competition for her social impact film Backlog.
The drama is inspired by the real-life U.S. Senate Hearing to end the national backlog of millions of untested rape kits.
It follows a young college sexual assault victim who becomes a key witness. After years of reclaiming her life following a brutal attack that was never brought before the courts due to an untested rape kit, she musters her strength to be a voice of hope for women globally.
Rosenthal will receive a $5,000 option and be eligible for up to $3 Million in financing for the film from Catalyst Studios.
She will also be mentored by outgoing Berlinale Managing Director Mariette Rissenbeek, who will be taking on some development and production projects following her departure from the festival at the end of this year’s edition.

The fifth episode of Masters of the Air was one of the most intense chapters in the tapestry of the whole show. Egan was back and willing to go on another mission, and it was clear he didn’t care if he survived. He just wanted to drop another bomb and make the Germans pay, partly because they had taken his dear friend Cleven away. The change in attitude was the most striking, as Egan went from something of an idealistic man to a reckless figure who just wanted to deal damage, irrespective of what he was damaging. The newbies also got a taste of the missions; there was a panic, and Rosenthal, one of the newest recruits, saw what he had signed up for.

Gale ‘Buck’ Cleven and John ‘Bucky’ Egan had made it this far in the war, and we were given confirmation that Biddick died in the previous episode. The fourth episode is especially about this sense of impending doom hovering over the lives of those involved in the Air Force. Every time the planes went up in the air, there was a very high chance that they would get shot down. Earlier, we had seen Biddick’s plane go down, but the mission had been a success, which could be seen as compensation for the lives lost. Yet Buck and Bucky were getting wary of the kind of dread the new crop of soldiers would have to face as they were preparing to get into those planes once again, trying to cheat death through their skills. Quinn had his own troubles, and we see how he survived after having parachuted down...

For a lot of horror fans, October is their favorite month of the year, giving us 31 full days to watch even more horror movies than we do throughout the rest of the year, including films that are set on the holiday that ends the month: Halloween. Of course, the Halloween-set horror movies that get the most views are the slasher movies that share their name with the holiday. So with fresh viewings of every Halloween movie taken in, we have assembled a list: Halloween Movies Ranked, from worst to best. Check it out:
Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
Director Rick Rosenthal did such a good job emulating the style of John Carpenter when he made Halloween II, bringing him back to direct the follow-up to H20 seemed like a great idea. Recipes are far more than measurements and ingredients; they transport us to other places and times, evoking forgotten memories through the taste, texture, smell, sound and visual presentation of food. Key to our social history, recipe books passed down through the generations are a historical blueprint connecting us to our ancestors and food traditions. We remember the comfort of our mother’s arms with a taste of matzo ball soup or recall a joyous celebration with a bite of walnut cake.
It is this human and historical connection — forged by recipes — that has brought together Israeli American chef Alon Shaya (New Orleans’ Saba and Miss River, Denver’s Safta), 92-year-old Holocaust survivor Steven Fenves and Phil Rosenthal, from Netflix’s Somebody Feed Phil, to host the Rescued Recipes dinner in Los Angeles on Saturday, Oct. 21.

What defines a horror movie slasher killer? Not all of them speak, so we can't talk about voice. Not all of them stick to a single signature weapon, so we have to find another avenue. The easy answer is the mask, but even that changes -- Jason Voorhees wore a bag over his head before he found that hockey mask in his franchise's third film. So maybe it comes down to the walk. Jason is a lumbering beast, stumbling forward and easily distracted, the bull in the china shop. Freddy Krueger is a demonic spider monkey, his elastic limbs flapping to the winds as he pursues his prey.
And Michael Myers, aka the Shape, of "Halloween" fame? He's the shark from "Jaws" in human form: a merciless predator who simply cannot be deterred. He moves like he has a plan, a merciless void powered by an alien intelligence. Jason acts on instinct.

Former studio executive and prolific producer Paula Weinstein is leaving Tribeca Enterprises, where she’s been chief content officer for the past decade, to jump into political work and help “as many voices as possible be heard.”
“I don’t want to sit on the sidelines and rail about everything. I really want to jump in, fully, into the campaigns. Both statewide and national campaigns,” she tells Deadline. “It just feels very much like a moment…between the climate, and book banning and everything else that I don’t need to go into.”
In a memo to staff this morning, Tribeca CEO Jane Rosenthal said Weinstein will “devote her efforts to fighting for the preservation and advancement of human and women’s rights, and most urgently the upcoming elections.” She will also continue to consult for Tribeca. Next summer’s festival, dates just announced, would have been her 12th.

Fred Gallo, a former assistant director on a slew of classic 1970s pictures who went on to become the president of production at Paramount, has died. He was 78 years old.
The Hollywood titan, who had worked on Oscar-winning gems like “The Godfather,” “Annie Hall” and “Rocky,” died on Sept. 7 at his Santa Ynez Valley home.
His family confirmed his passing, while Lee Rosenthal called him a “singular force in the industry.” Paramount and Nickolodean’s president of worldwide physical production said, in a statement obtained by TheWrap, that “beneath a formidable exterior was a big-hearted, one-man masterclass in filmmaking and production management.”
“Some of the most iconic movies of our time — ‘The Godfather,’ ‘Rocky’ and ‘Annie Hall,’ to name a few — are imprinted with Fred’s artistry,” Rosenthal stated. “He was a vestige of a time and place in Hollywood history, an early champion of inclusivity and a mentor to many.

Movies primarily depend on the suspension of disbelief. Audiences tacitly know that movies are alternative realities. The narrative fidelity closely enough resembles the real world. However, there is an undercurrent of movie logic necessary to make most anything successful. While some modern audiences fancy themselves Cinema Sins-lite, dismissing most releases for the most arbitrary of continuity errors, that's not, and never has been, how movies should be watched.
Still, some films, even flawless ones, serve up moments that feel out of step with the rest of the movie. These scenes comparatively fall flat, often undermining what's come before or after. Here, we'll look at 10 flawless horror classics with single scenes that come across as out of place. That doesn't render these movies bad. If anything, it's a testament to the strong work elsewhere. Scaring people is hard, and these 10 movies almost got it perfect.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” creator and “Somebody Feed Phil” host Phil Rosenthal knows a thing or two about Hollywood, which is why Ktla’s Sam Rubin asked him about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes Saturday morning. When it comes to what is really at the heart of what’s happening, Rosenthal pinned it all on one thing: “Greed.”
He said, “I’ve spoken to the people who are heading up the thing, they don’t know [when it will end].” The problem is “greed … and they’re not in the entertainment business, these people. This is not about studios and networks and writers and actors. This is about Corporate America versus the worker.”
When will Hollywood’s dual strikes end? @PhilRosenthal offers his thoughts. pic.twitter.com/GLyS0HTqXg
— Sam Rubin (@SamOnTV) August 31, 2023
Rosenthal continued, “It’s very obvious that’s what’s happening. These giant conglomerations, they have the entertainment division as almost like an afterthought.

In 2019, veteran TV writer and producer Phil Rosenthal realized he had to move forward without one half of what he thought was “the best part” of his show — but more devastating than that problem was the personal heartbreak that came with it.
In between Seasons 2 and 3 of “Somebody Feed Phil,” Rosenthal’s Netflix food and travel show, his mother, Helen, died from Als. For the first two seasons, Rosenthal would dial Helen and his father, Max, on Skype to regale them with stories about each day’s adventure. The heart and humor of their responses was a large part of what kept viewers watching.
“They were the part that connected the audience to a family,” he says. “I know the audience loves them, because they write to me and tell me. Whenever I post a picture with them, I get the biggest response. I feel like I owe everything that...

A Bronx Tale, Robert De Niro’s 1993 directorial debut, starred as the Tribeca Festival’s closing gala with the famed actor acknowledging that he never got asked to direct again following the film’s inauspicious box office debut.
“I was lucky to be able to make the movie. I made it the way I wanted to make it. I didn’t compromise at all. And I took longer to do [it] than was scheduled. And I had a lot of pressure…So I never got asked to do movies after that. Remick reminded him he’d also directed The Good Shepherd. “I did The Good Shepherd. But that was another uphill battle,” De Niro said.

“Trump was indicted yesterday — and again — as Paula likes to remind me,” said Jane Rosenthal as she kicked off her speech Friday afternoon at the ninth annual Chanel Through Her Lens luncheon. The Tribeca Festival brings its unusual brand of film, music, TV, games, reunions and talks, audio and immersive storytelling to New York City this week, a festival for the city and the latest stop for the film community after a short post-Cannes break. Today’s opening may face unexpected headwinds as New York suffers a sudden, sharp deterioration of air quality due to wildfires in Canada.
The fest, which runs June 7-18, kicks off Wednesday with Kiss the Future, a documentary by Nenad Cicin-Sain produced by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Sarah Anthony. It closes with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, produced by and starring, respectively, Tribeca co-founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro. Just before the fest kickoff, NYC Mayor Eric Adams — who is attending opening night — will make an arts- and culture-related announcement with the actor.

Robert De Niro is going from Cannes to Tribeca, as the world-renowned actor prepares to kick off the 22nd edition of the film festival he co-founded in 2001 with Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff. It runs from June 7 to 18 across New York City.

Big changes are afoot in Peru, thanks to Paramount’s mega-budgeted “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” which shot there in 2021, literally saving hundreds of jobs badly hit by a six-month pandemic lockdown.
With street protests now a distant memory, talks are underway to address concerns that will make Peru a more attractive location shoot, including such measures as launching a film commission, introducing fiscal incentives, improving equipment availability as well as more training and support for the local audiovisual industry.
The need for these filming incentives were driven painfully home when the producers behind “Paddington in Peru,” the third film in the hit “Paddington” series, opted to shoot in Colombia because of its coveted rebates. While some second-unit filming will be done in Peru, the bulk will be shot in Colombia and London.

Rosenthal’s last official day at Formosa Group was Friday. A day earlier, a so-called “Formosa Group Collective” — a name being used to include employees from “all divisions, domestic and international,” including its award-winning sound talent — sent a petition to top brass at parent company Streamland Media, urging it to keep the company under Rosenthal’s “unhindered leadership,” The Hollywood Reporter has learned. THR has obtained a copy of the petition (below, in its entirety).
As THR understands it, the employees received a response from the company, but Streamland declined a request for comment.

Frasier and Everybody Loves Raymond are two very different shows. While both aired in the 1990s and early 2000s, they appeared on different networks and largely appealed to different audiences. Their subject matters were distinct, too. Frasier followed a radio psychologist as he navigated an upper-crust life in Seattle. Everybody Loves Raymond focused on Ray Barone and his extended family in New York. Still, the two shows have an unlikely connection.
