The classic tale of Hansel & Gretel has been brought to the screen a handful of times over the years, and now an upcoming stop motion animated film has attracted some A-list talent.
Variety reports that Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen have boarded the Hansel & Gretel movie as executive producers through their company Square Peg.
Chilean filmmakers Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña (The Hyperboreans) are directing. Variety notes, “The story is expected to twist the fairy tale into inimitable shapes.”
The duo co-directed the stop motion movie The Wolf House back in 2018, and they also worked in the animation department on Ari Aster’s most recent movie, Beau Is Afraid.
“It’s our very personal adaptation of the classic fairy tale, with the main difference that Hansel and Gretel are both boys in this version, at least at the beginning of the story,” Cristóbal León explained. In this telling, “the story itself gets lost,...

A new Longlegs trailer is perplexing horror fans today with a cryptic and extended look at Osgood Perkins’s bizarre-looking serial killer film. The theatrical cut of the “Dirty” and “Sweet” teasers explore two main characters of the film: FBI Agent Harker (Maika Monroe) and the serial killer, Longlegs, played by Nicolas Cage.

Longlegs follows FBI agent Lee Harker, “a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer. Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Dead Snow, Violent Night) is headed into the open waters for an untitled shark attack horror movie, The Insneider exclusively reports this week. That scoop has been confirmed by Variety, with the site also reporting that Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play) is in talks to star in the upcoming movie.
Adam McKay and Kevin Messick will produce the untitled movie for Sony, with Variety noting that production is expected to take place this coming summer in Australia.
“Plot details are being kept under wraps,” the site also notes.
Wirkola’s project is one of many new shark attack movies in the works, with Lizzy Greene starring in High Tide and Sean Byrne directing Dangerous Animals, to name just a couple.
The prospect of a shark attack movie directed by Tommy Wirkola is particularly exciting, however, as Wirkola’s movies are always wildly entertaining and extremely bloody.

Bridgerton breakout Phoebe Dynevor is in talks to star in an as-yet-untitled shark thriller that Tommy Wirkola (Violent Night) wrote to direct for Sony Pictures, Deadline can confirm.
Details as to the plot of the film are under wraps. But Adam McKay and Kevin Messick will produce under their Hyperobject Industries banner, with production to kick off in Australia this summer.

Best known for her role of Daphne Bridgerton in the first two seasons of the hugely popular Netflix series Bridgerton, Dynevor was also recently seen starring opposite Alden Ehrenreich in the thriller Fair Play, which the streamer picked up at Sundance following a bidding war, garnering a BAFTA nomination for her work. Considering how much build-up Longlegs has had – with the stream of teasers, posters and symbols – the horror film had a lot to live up to, at least how it was being marketed. Fortunately for the involved parties, Longlegs looks to be one of the horror flicks to see so far this year, with most praising it for being an unnerving work that features stellar performances and channels The Silence of the Lambs.
Check out some of the early reviews of Longlegs below:
I was so lucky to see #Longlegs, and no exaggeration: it could be the best horror film of ‘24. Oz Perkins can really get under my skin; this is his masterpiece. Monroe gives a fabulously unique lead performance, and Cage? Nightmarish. Maybe the scariest 1st 10 mins, ever. pic.twitter.com/ImMEDDxGXi

Horror fans have been keeping a very close eye on director Osgood Perkins' next project, and the first social media reactions for the mysterious Longlegs are in.
These reactions are highly positive, and it sounds like the movie is a genuinely disturbing, terrifying experience.
Though Longlegs definitely seems to be keeping its biggest secrets firmly under wraps for the time being (and the teasers are all the better for it), we do know that the plot revolves around a rookie FBI agent (It Follows star Maika Monroe) attempting to track down a sadistic serial killer (Nicolas Cage) who targets families.
Cage's character has largely been kept out of the marketing, aside from one unsettling shot.
Check out the social media posts below, and keep an eye out for a new trailer.

Hansel and Gretel, the two German kids who nearly became somebody’s meal, need little introduction. The characters in this Brothers Grimm classic have been used as a lesson about stranger danger and resilience for years. And while Hansel and Gretel’s ordeal has been put on screen multiple times — both faithfully and loosely — Yim Pil-sung’s 2007 movie is one of the more distinct adaptations. This Korean reimagining retains the essence of the influential fairy tale while also adding its own unique twists.
Hansel and Gretel was one of several movies from the golden age of South Korean Horror — often referred to as “K-Horror” in the West — to be based on fairy or folk tales. While Arang and A Tale of Two Sisters dug into local Korean lore, other movies drew from European narrations. However, much like Cinderella and The Red Shoes, Hansel and Gretel’s interpretation of its basis is rather liberal.

The opening scenes of Greta Gerwig's blockbuster "Barbie" feature multiple young girls, each of them dressed in drab, mid-'50s frocks, playing with baby dolls. A narrator (Helen Mirren) notes, prior to 1959, babies were the only doll option for kids, implying that little girls were being trained for their eventual expected role as housewives and mothers. Surreally, the girls are playing out in a vast, prehistorical desert, with no homes or parents anywhere to be seen.
Then, she appears.
Standing about 15-feet tall, Barbie (Margot Robbie) manifests in the dirt nearby. She stands there, statuesque, presenting the young girls with the next step in their playtime evolution. Baby dolls are instantly a thing of the past. Barbie, an adult doll, is now going to be the girls' whole world. The girls wander in idle awe up to Barbie, touching her leg, making sure she's real. Anthony C. Ferrante, who used to write for Fangoria magazine back in the day, has directed twenty feature films over the course of his directing career – and several of those are shark thrillers. Ferrante was the director behind the over-the-top shark action of Sharknado, and when that movie turned out to be a pop culture sensation he returned to direct all five of the increasingly over-the-top sequels. The franchise wrapped up in 2018… and now, five years later, Ferrante has directed his seventh shark movie. A production of The Asylum, it’s a thriller called Blind Waters – and it’s already available to watch on the Tubi streaming service! In his third feature outing with ascendant genre filmmaker Ari Aster on Beau Is Afraid, Lars Knudsen produced the duo’s most ambitious, thought-provoking and outlandish work yet — a nightmare comedy of staggeringly detailed vision that is sure to engender conversation.
A nearly-three-hour epic reuniting the pair with A24, this deeply unsettling and quite funny feature burrows into the psyche of Beau (Joaquin Phoenix), a man-child riddled with anxiety who exists in a world in which each of his worst fears is bound to come true. The film bears the framework of a Grimm’s fairy tale à la Hansel and Gretel, watching as Beau finds himself in increasingly surreal scenarios while on a journey on foot to his mother’s house.
For Aster and Knudsen, Beau Is Afraid comes on the heels of Midsommar, an astonishingly dark folk horror starring Florence Pugh, which the former insists is “a joke.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, co-directors of 2018’s hilarious comedy Game Night and writers of Spider-Man: Homecoming, directed the live action movie.

Traditional fairy tales almost always have important lessons to teach. Goldilocks educates us on why you probably shouldn't just wander into a stranger's house one day and make yourself at home. Red Riding Hood alerts us to the perils of talking to suspicious strangers, even if they are wearing your grandmother's clothes. And Hansel and Gretel expand upon the "strangers are bad" lesson by teaching us that just because a house is made of candy, that doesn't mean you should necessarily start gorging on it.
Because all of these fairytales have a creepy bend to them, many, if not all, have been turned into horror films over the years. Sometimes the movies are obvious retellings of classic tales like 2020's "Gretel & Hansel" or 2011's "Red Riding Hood." Other times though, the fairytale source material is a bit harder to put your finger on.

Gory, glittery and irresistibly bleak, In My Mother’s Skin represents a stylish, ripe contribution to the folk-horror canon. Not unlike his acclaimed debut, Ma (2018), Manila-based writer-director Kenneth Dagatan’s second feature revolves around a young person who makes a bargain with a malevolent insectoid forest spirit to help her family — with disastrous consequences.
This time round, Dagatan and his team have added a period frame by setting the story on a rural estate in the Philippines during the final days of World War II, just before the defeat of the occupying Japanese forces. Inevitably, that fascism subtext coupled with the creepy-ancient-being stuff strongly brings Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth to mind, at least to a Western viewer’s eyes. But if you’re going to steal, steal from the best. And there’s plenty that’s fresh, frisky and original here. It’s no surprise the global rights were...

David Harbour in ‘Violent Night’ (Photo © Universal Studios)
Santa Claus is coming to town with his bag of toys and a war hammer to take down some very bad mercenaries who are on his naughty list in the holiday comedy, Violent Night.
The movie begins with Old Saint Nick sitting in a bar in England on Christmas Eve. Santa’s drowning his sorrow and misery, fed up with all the greed in the world. So many little kids are only interested in getting presents and don’t actually have any real Christmas spirit.
As he flies off in his sleigh to continue his night of gift delivery, the bartender – who followed him to the roof, concerned he might fall – watches Santa fly away with his reindeer. She’s pleasantly awestruck…that is until her head gets covered in Santa’s projectile vomit as he dashes off. This sets up what...

A few weeks ago, it was announced that the great Nicolas Cage will be starring in Longlegs, the latest horror project from The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins. Details on the story Perkins wrote were being kept completely under wraps, but it was said that Longlegs is aiming to be “in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers.” Now Cage has let a little information about the film slip out, revealing that he’ll be playing a possessed doll maker.
Cage revealed this information while talking to legendary filmmaker John Carpenter. Document Journal has published a long conversation with Cage and Carpenter, during which they ask each other about their careers and shower each other with compliments. As the discussion goes on, Cage mentions,

We’re scarcely five minutes into Tommy Wirkola’s naughty new Christmas tale “Violent Night” before David Harbour’s chubby, drunk, and righteously pissed off St. Nick is puking off his sleigh onto one very confused bartender and revealing himself to, yes indeed, be the jolly one himself. If you can vibe with that whiplash-inducing comedic opening — gallons of vomit mixed with some magical holiday sweetness — you just might be in the right frame of mind to receive what’s to come in this holiday trifle.
The big draw of “Violent Night” is, of course, right there in the title: the violence! Wirkola has often delighted in turning basic-ish ideas into bloody good fun with the addition of head-bashing twists. You can practically hear the elevator pitches: “It’s a horror movie about Nazis…who are also zombies” or “It’s Hansel and Gretel…but also they’re witch hunters.

There may be two “Pinocchio” films on the horizon, but Nicolas Cage just threw in an unexpected twisted take on the beloved classic.
Cage is set to star in and produce the upcoming horror film “Longlegs,” written and directed by Osgood Perkins (“The Blackcoat’s Daughter”). Filming is set to begin in 2023, and the feature will be in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers. While the plot details were formerly under wraps, Cage teased a few spoilers while in conversation with horror icon John Carpenter for Document Journal.
“I’m working with Oz [Perkins], who you probably know,” Cage told Carpenter. “He’s pretty strong in the horror genre at the moment. But he’s actually Anthony [Perkins’] son. He’s done some really good movies. ‘Gretel and Hansel’ was terrific.”
Cage continued of “Longlegs,” “It’s about a character who’s hearing voices. It’s kind of like a possessed Geppetto,...

Peter Hengl’s Family Dinner, a highlight of the 21st edition of the Tribeca Film Festival, has a modern day Hansel and Gretel feel. Philipp Otto Runge’s Juniper Tree (Von dem Machandelboom), a tale that inspired the Brothers Grimm stylistically, may come to mind, or movies such as Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining or Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover while watching this story of food, desire, family, customs, and control unfold on the screen.
Peter Hengl with Anne-Katrin Titze on Hansel and Gretel: “I wanted to go for a certain timelessness and make it relatable for a modern audience.”
