Haley Lu Richardson in ‘Unpregnant’ Trailer Gives a Buddy Comedy Spin on Teen Abortion Drama (Video)
Though there’s already a very serious looking drama about teen abortion called “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” that opened this year, the first trailer for the new film “Unpregnant” starring Haley Lu Richardson gives a road trip, buddy comedy spin on the same story.
Richardson stars alongside Barbie Ferreira in a comedy coming to HBO Max in which Richardson plays a straight-a student and popular kids who enlists her more rebellious, former best friend (Ferreira) to get an abortion over 1,000 miles in New Mexico. Of course in this story, they end up on the run from the cops, in a stolen Trans-Am and even trying to jump aboard a moving train on their trip to get the procedure done.
“There’s an Albuquerque in Missouri? The law won’t let me get one without my parents knowing,” Richardson says in the trailer. “It’s my life, it’s my choice.

HBO Max is continuing to round out its original film programming, adding a fresh new comedy from “Valley Girl” remake filmmaker Rachel Lee Goldenberg and rising stars Haley Lu Richardson and Barbie Ferreira to its upcoming slate. “Unpregnant” puts a humorous spin on a tough, timely topic, but promises to do it with a generous dash of humor. The film’s first trailer offers a funny first look at a fresh take on the young adult novel of the same name, written by authors Jenni Hendriks (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Ted Caplan (music editor for “The Hate U Give” and “The Greatest Showman”).
The film follows Richardson’s Veronica, a Missouri teen who is shocked to discover she is pregnant, and who sets off on a road trip with her former best pal Bailey (Ferreira) in hopes of securing an abortion so that she can continue to pursue her Ivy League college dreams.

Actor Denny Love is happy that “Looking for Alaska” became a TV series and not a movie.
“If it was a movie, it would probably be two hours and change. It’s very hard to wrap up the book in that amount of time. This series allowed [producers] Josh [Schwartz] and Steph[anie Savage] enough time to really write fuller lives for these characters,” Love told IndieWire. “You not only get to see the story through the lens of Miles, but you really get to see the depth of Alaska, her wants and dreams and pain. I really think it’s the perfect way to do the show.”
Even set amidst the lush forest backdrop that doubles as Culver Creek High School, the setting for John Green’s novel and its new eight-episode Hulu adaptation, the characters are what really drive this series. Told primarily through the experiences of newcomer Miles Halter (Charlie Plummer...

We talked with Denny Love, who plays Chip "The Colonel" Martin in Hulu's new Looking For Alaska adaptation.
While John Green's Looking For Alaska novel was told from Miles "Pudge" Halter's point of view, Hulu's limited series has adapted the story in a much more ensemble-driven context. This isn't just Miles' story anymore, if it ever was to begin with. This story belongs to characters like Alaska and Dr. Hyde and Takumi and Lara, too.
Perhaps most affectingly, this story belong to Chip "The Colonel" Martin. In a sea of stellar performances from young and older actors alike, Denny Love's portrayal of Chip—a black scholarship student at Culver Creek Academy who, as Miles' roommate, acts as his guide to this new world—is particularly exceptional. To uncouthly quote my own review on the subject:

Based on the 2005 John Green novel of the same name, “Looking For Alaska” was made to be adapted for television by Josh Schwartz. In fact, in 2005, it was set to be adapted by him as a feature film; but even after writing a screenplay that Green reportedly loved, the movie remained in development hell, with constant delays for years. Then in May 2018, it was announced that Schwartz would be writing the eight-episode limited series for Hulu, executive producing alongside his Fake Empire partner and longtime collaborator Stephanie Savage.
Now it’s finally here, and despite the story originally being written by someone else entirely, “Looking For Alaska” fits Schwarz and Savage like a glove. This is far from the duo’s first adaptation—“Gossip Girl,” “The Carrie Diaries,” and Marvel’s “Runaways” all exist—but it is impressive just how much the source material and the finished product makes it feel like their own creation.

Hulu took viewers back to 2005 and the land of sweet, sweet O.C. tunes with Friday’s premiere of Looking for Alaska.

We talked to Looking For Alaska creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage about the connections between Looking For Alaska & The O.C.
Tonally and structurally, Hulu's new teen drama Looking For Alaska and that mainstay of teen television The O.C. have little in common. One is a more grounded coming-of-age drama, the other is a (very good) teen soap. One is an eight-episode limited series, the other ran for four seasons on Fox. One is set in the woods of Alabama, the other takes place on the sunny beaches of Southern California.
But these two projects—one set in 2005 but made in 2019, and the other set in 2003-2007 and made during that same time period—have some fascinating connections that can give the Looking For Alaska viewing experience a meta layer for anyone who was also a contemporary fan of that teen drama classic The O.

With TV shows premiering at an alarming rate, it's becoming increasingly difficult to cut through the clutter to find the ones that are worth watching.
Hulu's Looking for Alaska, based on the John Green novel of the same name, is a coming of age story that is well worth watching.
Yes, it's filled with the melodrama you would expect from a teen drama, but it delivers a solid plot about a group of younger people trying to find themselves in the world.
At the wheel is Charlie Plummer as Miles "Pudge" Halter, a teenager who is fascinated by last words.
It's certainly a different thing for a teenager to like in this social media conscious world, but Looking for Alaska feels like a teen drama from the early days of the WB, and it's all thanks to when it is set.
It's refreshing to see a bunch of youngsters...

It was probably just a matter of time before John Green and Josh Schwartz became collaborators. Green, whose novels include “Looking for Alaska,” “The Fault in Our Stars,” and “Paper Towns,” has become known for writing teenagers filled with so much restlessness and existential melancholy that they can hardly stand it. Schwartz, whose shows include “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl,” has built a television brand based on brooding teenagers who wish they could skip straight to adulthood. Miles “Pudge” Halter (Charlie Plummer), the teen hero of Hulu’s Looking for Alaska, is obsessed with famous last words, like poet François Rabelais’ declaration, “I go to seek a Great Perhaps.” But as he confesses to his new friends at an elite Alabama boarding school, he’s never actually read the works of the writers he quotes, just their biographies. It’s a shallow perspective on the artists’ lives, and Looking for Alaska — based on John Green’s debut Ya novel — could risk being a similarly superficial take on...

When The O.C. showrunner Josh Schwartz optioned the rights to the unpublished manuscript of Looking For Alaska in 2004, John Green was an unknown. Green would go on to write other books and to build the online Nerdfighter community with brother Hank.
But, in 2004, he hadn't done any of that yet. Alaska, published in 2005, would be his first book, and it would end up taking almost 15 years before it was adapted for the screen, improbably in the hands of the young TV writer who first saw something special in it.
Can I say...? Thank god that it took so long. The eight-episode streaming series didn't even exist as a format in 2004, and what a loss it would have been if we'd never seen this long-form adaptation of Looking For Alaska.

John Green's bestselling Ya novel Looking For Alaska has gotten the onscreen adaptation treatment courtesy of Hulu, which has turned the heartfelt coming-of-age story into an eight-episode limited series. The first trailer introduces us to Miles "Pudge" Halter (Charlie Plummer) and his obsession with last words ("I go to seek a great perhaps"), as he enrolls in a rural boarding school.
While there, he ends up making new, meaningful friendships with a group of guys, as well as falling in love with the titular Alaska (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser star Kristine Froseth). Unfortunately, Miles also encounters profound tragedy, forcing him and his friends to grow up in ways they weren't expecting to. Watch the trailer for the show - which also stars Denny Love, Jay Lee, and Timothy Simons - before it begins streaming on Oct. 18!

High school is never easy for anyone. For the students in “Looking for Alaska,” the new limited series based on John Green’s novel, there’s plenty more than just classes to deal with.
The eight-episode season follows Miles (Charlie Plummer), an unassuming newcomer at a nature-adjacent boarding school. It’s there he meets Alaska (Kristine Froseth), a fellow student who reshapes plenty of his priorities as the school year goes on. Thrust into the middle of conflicting emotions and crushes and the regular complications of teen life, Miles and his friends are left to deal with the aftermath of an unexpected drastic turn of events.
In case the unbuttoned shirts and waist-tied sweatshirts didn’t give it away, “Looking for Alaska” takes place right smack dab in the middle of The Aughts, complete with a year-specific soundtrack and plenty of early-2000s angst.
It’s maybe no surprise then...

Fans of John Green’s “Looking for Alaska” who don’t want the upcoming Hulu adaptation of the beloved 2005 Ya novel to clear up the ambiguity at the center of the story can breathe a sigh of relief, because the limited series’ creator, Josh Schwartz, says they won’t explain anything.
“We will never know what happened that night,” the “Gossip Girl” and “O.C.” mastermind told reporters during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour Friday. “And if you’ve seen the first episode, that is as much as you will see of the event. And it is a mystery what happened and that is part of what the characters will have to grapple with, and the audience.”
