HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, returns for its second season in ten days, and the review embargo has now lifted.
Though most critics got to see all 8 episodes, some only got the first 2, which should be taken into account when reading through these verdicts.
Though reviews are still coming in, House of the Dragon season 2 currently sits at a very impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Approaching its dynastic cataclysm with a deliberate stride rather than a charging gallop, House of the Dragon carefully sets up its emotional stakes to make the fiery spectacle all the more scorching," reads the Critics Consensus.
The cast - particularly Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen - come in for universal praise, as does the production values, VFX and intense action sequences (it sounds like season 2 ups the gore quota considerably), but some seem to feel that the story has a few issues,...

Very few shows have ever caught my attention the way the world of Game of Thrones has the opening title sequence. The music hits, sending chills down my spine, knowing I am ready to be engulfed in this world of lies and deceit. We’ve waited close to two years to reenter the world of Westeros, but House of the Dragon has returned for a second season, and I’ve got so much to say about it.
House of the Dragon Season 2 Plot
King Viserys Targaryen’s death sent shockwaves through Westeros as a succession plan backfired in the face of Princess Thaenyra. Westeros is on the brink of a bloody civil war between the Black and Green Councils, fighting for Queen Rhaenyra and King Aegon, respectively.

The opening lines of “House of the Dragon” Season 2 stem from a character I’m not meant to name speaking of things that have no real bearing in the “Game of Thrones” universe. “Duty is sacrifice,” the man says. (I hope I can say he’s a man.) “It eclipses all things, even blood. All men of honor must pay its price.” Sorry to interrupt, good sir, but who are these “men of honor” you speak of? Are they hiding? Is HBO saving them for the next spinoff? Some are certainly dead, given the body count on which George R.R. Martin has built his brutal world, but there are scant few in “HotD” who fit the description. To be fair, the narrating man qualifies, and his colleagues also appear to be living a principled existence. But having seen nine seasons of heartless betrayals and maniacal power grabs, simply recognizing one...

The hectic inaugural season of House of the Dragon covered roughly 20 years as the long-standing peace under King Viserys came to an end. In the season’s final two episodes, the series found its footing, establishing the parallel claims to the throne between the Black faction that follows Viserys’s appointed heir, daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), and the Green faction under Rhaenyra’s former best friend, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), who follow Alicent and Viserys’s young, impetuous son Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney).
All the table setting and time jumping that dominated the better part of the first season have, perhaps inevitably, set the stage for a much stronger second season for House of the Dragon. It’s also, especially for a Game of Thrones property, surprisingly restrained. The first four episodes made available to press cover only a few weeks, and the entire opening episode, “A Son for a Son,...

Despite the success of House Of The Dragon’s first season, both in terms of its burnished worldbuilding and its broadly positive critical response, the second arrives with much expectation that it can do better. Whether it was the relative lack of geographical and social scope, the big leaps forward in time, or the constant casting switch-ups as characters aged, even its biggest fans had a niggle they could mention. On all those fronts, we have good news. Season 2, now run solo by Ryan Condal (co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik having bowed out), is more chronologically focused, less fidgety with its actors, and has its eye on the world (and the social strata) beyond the highborn Targaryen court.
It opens with a reassuringly familiar musical theme and location, welcoming us briefly back to Winterfell, where we meet Lord Cregan Stark (Tom Taylor), promising a Northern contingent in the war to come. And...

“House of the Dragon” showrunner Ryan Condal describes the second season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel as a “cold war in process.”
“And that’s really because of the dragons,” Condal told Variety at the Season 2 premiere Monday night in New York City. “Everybody’s terrified of launching mutually assured destruction and burning down the kingdom that they’re trying to rule over.”
“House of the Dragon” Season 2 will continue to chronicle the royal succession civil war, known as the Dance of Dragons, between two rival factions of House Targaryen: the greens and the blacks.
“I think I was most excited to explore the exchange of power,” Olivia Cooke said of her character, Alicent Hightower. “She was at the height of her power come the end of Season 1, and now her son’s on the throne, making her the Queen Dowager. I don’t think she’s really...

The first season of HBO’s House of the Dragon brought a unique take to the screen by covering two decades in just ten episodes, complete with significant time jumps that saw characters age, marry, and die. By contrast, season 2 aims for continuity and deeper character exploration. What to Expect from Season 2 According to showrunner Ryan Condal, the new season will begin just days after the season 1 finale where Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) tragically kills his nephew Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault). This act cements the conflict between Aemond’s brother Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and his half-sister Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy)...

The fact that Matt Smith has been in three of the most well-known franchises in the world is proof of his extraordinary acting talent. He has seen the best and the worst of it all, whether it was the mysterious former Doctor Who, a Marvel villain in Morbius, or an insane Prince Daemon Targaryen in the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. He recently recalled meeting Kit Harington, during the early days of Game of Thrones.

House of the Dragon is returning for Season 2 and the cast is teasing what viewers can expect when the show returns to HBO on June 16.
Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, and Matt Smith talked to Deadline and teased what is ahead for the fantasy drama, with Smith revealing that the show will be more like its older sibling.
For Cooke, who plays Queen Alicent Hightower, returning for the second season of the George R.R. Martin-created series was like a homecoming.
“We know the characters inside out, and we’re sort of going back home, in a way,” Cooke told us. “We’re not afraid of the text or afraid of the big sets that are sort of home away from home.”
Cooke teases that in Season 2, Queen Alicent Hightower leaves the castle with the actor saying, “That was huge for me. I went to Spain. I went to Wales and I went to Surrey.

With June 16 just around the corner, Team Black and Team Green are all geared up to claim the Iron Throne. In a panel discussion to kick off the New York premiere of House of the Dragon, the cast and showrunner Ryan Condal sat down to answer some burning questions.
Talking about the looming war and the preceding power shift at King’s Landing, actress Olivia Cooke claimed that her character has been forced into early retirement. Alicent’s purpose in life, as set by her father, was to further the reputation of her house and consolidate power. Now, with her son as the King of Seven Kingdoms, she feels useless as she has achieved her purpose and now has nothing to do.
The Dowager Queen has lost a fair share of power and is struggling to find her footing. Condal further praised Cooke for her incredible work in bringing the character to life.

A certain character and the energy they evoke on screen seem to be calling to certain performers. As for Aemond Targaryen in House of the Dragon, well, there isn’t a greater performer than Ewan Mitchell who can portray the role. He distinguishes himself from the others in the role by bringing a dark edge. However, it seems like he’ll lose a bit of that edge in Season 2.
Aemond won’t be as dark in House of the Dragon Season 2
Aemond Targaryen is known to be stoic and stern, a fearsome warrior who gets what he wants. He is the reason why the civil war kicks off. In an interview with Esquire magazine, Mitchell revealed his character will see a change in season 2. He said, “In the last three episodes of season 1, I presented a character that was entirely black. In season 2, I can’t wait to turn him gray.

House of the Dragon focuses on The Dance of the Dragons, a story that tells of the Targaryen Civil War between the Blacks and Greens. The war was made up of the various battles that occurred in Westeros over a number of years. Matt Smith‘s Daemon Targaryen and Ewan Mitchell‘s Aemond Targaryen, who will be two of the main characters in Season 2, are the two most well-known fighters from the two sides. Smith recently teased a face-off between the two.
Daemon will be much “weaker” in House of the Dragon Season 2
Daemon has always been known to be an agent of chaos, infamous for being stern, unpredictable, and dangerous. However, Season 2 will mellow him down. Smith told Variety in a recent interview:
“We definitely meet Daemon at a point of crisis in this situation, and in many ways, it’s a different version of him. It’s one that’s much weaker.

We are just a few weeks away from the first episode of House of the Dragon Season 2. The period fantasy drama is a prequel to Game of Thrones (2011-2019). The HBO series was created by George Rr Martin and Ryan Condal and is based on Martin’s Fire and Blood book. The story takes place 200 years before the events of GoT.
House of The Dragon stars Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Rhys Ifans, Olivia Cooke, Eve Best, Tom Glynn-Carny, Ewan Mitchell, and others. The first season received a tremendous reaction and ended on a high note as we saw the bloodshed and wars. The season 2 trailers have hinted that things will only get uglier for the show’s characters. With the dragons having so much power this time, it is definitely going to be a fiery season!

Before House of the Dragon season 2 began filming, showrunner Ryan Condal assembled the actors of the Game of Thrones prequel to view a simple slideshow. The subject of this presentation? Dragons, naturally. The dragon riders needed to get acquainted with their bonded beasts, as they’ll never actually meet them in the scaly flesh.
“These poor actors climb up on a saddle but they never interact with the creature they’re supposed to have this close bond with,” Condal says. “If you believe Westerosi historical propaganda, Aegon [II] and Sunfyre famously had the closest bond between dragon and human in history. It’s important for Tom Glynn-Carney as an actor to know what Sunfyre looks like.”

One of the standout scenes in the latest trailer of House of the Dragon season 2 is where Alicent stops Aemond from going too far. Yes, the Greens want to win the war, but as his mother says, “Not like this.”
This sudden change in Alicent’s stance leaves something to be desired in fans as they piece together supposed situations in the second season of the show. New images from the previews and set prove that Alicent is not completely on board with Aemond’s insidious plans for the upcoming war for the throne.

Images of Aemond and Alicent together show Aegon’s catspaw dagger on Aemond’s belt. With that sinister smirk on his face, it definitely looks like Aemond is getting the upper hand in every situation. Ewan Mitchell has already claimed that his character is taking the war to another level.

Some actors feel like they were meant to play a specific role and bring the surrounding energy to life on screen. Ewan Mitchell is one of those actors as there could be no better actor to play Aemond Targaryen in House of the Dragon. Hence, he brings a certain sinister energy to the role that makes him stand out from the rest.
Heading into the second season of the HBO prequel, fans will see Aemond play a larger role in defending the Green faction. After the events of the season 1 finale, Aemond might be the one to blame for the civil war. However, he also seems to be the one to handle everything to defend his family.

House of the Dragon’s season 2 is less than a month away from finally arriving at Max, and all the new details coming in leave no doubt that it will probably be the fiercest war that Westeros has ever seen.
With House of Targaryen’s members split into two rival teams, the fight for the Iron Throne within the same family is set to put its leaders aside while now bringing to the light those who acted in the shadows all that time.
Judging by the most recent revelations, House of the Dragon’s upcoming season is going to give more of an evil arc for the character that escalated the whole confrontation between the Blacks and the Greens back in season 1.
The previous installment’s ending shows Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys finding his tragic death in a dragon chase started by Alicent’s son Aemond. The season’s last...

*House Of The Dragon S1 Spoilers Ahead*
If we had a nickel for every time a trailer for the second season of a big budget fantasy series based on an iconic book series released on a Tuesday in mid-May, we’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice, right? Yes folks, within mere hours of the first teaser for The Rings Of Power Season 2 dropping yesterday, HBO fired back with its own fancy new trailer for House Of The Dragon’s second season. And sure enough, there be dragons. Check it out below:
As you may recall, Season 1’s breathless finale saw Aemond Targaryen’s (Ewan Mitchell) dragon Vhagar brutally kill his half-sister Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault). Families, eh? Unsurprisingly, Rhaenyra’s none-too-happy about Aemond’s heinous deed, and in this new trailer things are hotting up...

HBO has released the first full-length trailer for House of the Dragon season 2 (via SFFGazette.com), and brace yourselves because it's epic. In the newly released footage, we see more of the scheming which continues in Westeros as war beckons between Queen Alicent Hightower and Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen.
The Targaryen civil war known as the "Dance of the Dragons" is nearly upon us and this sneak peek does a phenomenal job of setting the stage for the conflict to come.
All the major players are highlighted, with the sneak peek ending on a suitably epic note as Rhaenyra stands tall with Syrax looming large behind her. Who will prevail? Book readers (and most Game of Thrones fans) will know, but we won't spoil anything here,
"The first season was so much about the royal family, that 1 percent of the upper 1 percent that rules this world. All the people in the...

On Tuesday, HBO released the full trailer for “House of the Dragon” Season 2, which premieres June 16.
The eight-episode second season of the “Game of Thrones” prequel finds the Targaryens in a civil war, with the Greens – supporters of Aegon II Targaryn (Tom Glynn-Carney), son of late king Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and the traditional heir – on one side, and the Blacks – partisans of Viserys’ daughter Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), Viserys’ chosen heir, and her husband/uncle Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) on the other. Both sides claim the Iron Throne, and they will kill their kin to get it.
The trailer previews the combination of political strategy, intense action, and interpersonal backstabbing that’s the “Game of Thrones” franchise’s signature. On the political side, there’s a small council meeting where Aegon forcefully rejects the idea of dignity in favor of revenge. On the action side,...

All hail the king ... or the queen! Which one has the rightful claim, you ask? Well, that depends on which side you happen to have sworn allegiance to in the great Targaryen schism known as the Dance of the Dragons.
"House of the Dragon" lived up to its billing as an essential "Game of Thrones" prequel, set hundreds of years before Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen ever made their claims on the Iron Throne. The events of the mythic Targaryen civil war always loomed large in the background of the original HBO series, but never before had we seen the fire, blood, and (of course) incest depicted with as much fervor as the 10 episodes that comprised its debut season. With all the major players fully established and the stakes set impossibly high, season 2 now has a full runway to double down on our favorite royal squabble and dive deep into...

HBO is rolling out some beauteous dragon footage and a potty-mouthed Aegon in the season 2 trailer for House of the Dragon, which returns June 16.
The drama based on on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” is setting up an epic war between the Targaryens and the Hightowers following the Season 1 finale, which saw tragedy befall the former (R.I.P Prince Lucerys Velaryon) at the hands of the latter (Prince Aemond Targaryen). The series was largely able to continue filming last summer during the strikes as it has a largely British cast under Equity contracts rather than SAG-AFTRA ones.
Season two returning cast is Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans. “House of the Dragon” Season 2 is about to soar onto screens soon.
After Season 2 was first unveiled at Ccxp in Sao Paolo in December 2023 with a teaser, and later released viral dueling trailers, the season of the dragon is almost upon audiences. Season 2 will not have a time jump like in Season 1, and instead solely focus on former besties turned step-family Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent (Olivia Cooke) as they both battle for the Iron Throne.
Per the official synopsis, after the death of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine), an undeniable rift has grown between his daughter Rhaenyra (D’Arcy) and wife Alicent (Cooke), after their close friendship as teenagers. A rift that’s now a full-blown civil war.
The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” and is set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.”

Get all the details below.
When will House of the Dragon Season 2 premiere?
