A sequel to hit Disney musical Moana arrives in November. Take a look at the first Moana 2 trailer.
Though Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has a string successful films to his name, few have embedded themselves in the public consciousness like Disney musical Moana. The film was a critical and commercial success upon its release in 2016. In fact, the biggest surprise is that it has taken this long for a sequel to materialize.
The first film follows the titular girl as she teams up with demigod Maui to stop a curse he accidentally unleashed.
A live-action remake is also in the works. While Johnson will reprise his role, Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced the titular character, will not return for the live-action version. Original screenwriter Jared Bush will return to pen the script together with Dana Ledoux Miller. The film is scheduled to be released on the 10th July 2026.

The line where the sky meets the sea is calling Moana once again, as Disney has released the first trailer for its highly-anticipated “Moana” sequel. The trailer sees the return of Moana and Maui, voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, respectively, on another oceanic adventure.
According to its official description, “Moana 2” reunites “Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
“This is a call from the ancestors to sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean,” Moana says in the trailer. Maui then makes an appearance on her boat, referring to a chicken and pig as “boat snacks.”

Walt Disney Pictures has announced that the first trailer for its upcoming animated sequel, Moana 2, will be released online tomorrow, and star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has taken to social media to share the first theatrical poster.
Johnson will reprise the role of shapeshifting Polynesian Demigod Maui, alongside Auli'i Cravalho, who will once again provide the voice of the title character.
The Moana sequel was originally envisioned as a Disney+ series, but studio execs were said to be so impressed with writer-director David G. Derrick Jr.'s work on the initial episodes that they decided to revamp his ideas for a single big-screen feature.
There is also a live-action remake of Moana in the works, which is currently set for a 2026 release. Johnson will return as Maui, but Cravalho will not be portraying her character.
Johnson recently revealed that an actress has been cast in the role, but has yet to be officially announced.

What can Disney say to cinema owners except “you’re welcome“? After all, the studio is revisiting the island of Montunui, where “Moana” takes place, a lot sooner than movie theaters were expecting.
Earlier this year, the studio announced a surprise sequel to the 2016 animated feature for release on Nov. 27. The follow-up was initially commissioned as a television series for Disney+ but it was retooled into a feature film after executives were reportedly impressed by the footage.
Disney shared the first look at the scenes that wowed those Magic Kingdom creatives during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Thursday. In the music-heavy clip, Moana returns to her home island of Montunui and is greeted with a hero’s welcome. The clip offered a taste of one new song, which appears to be about the wayfinding natives eager to be “back to who we’re meant to be.” Although the...

Jon Musker and Ron Clements' 2016 animated Disney film "Moana" was a massive hit, making over $687 million worldwide. The titular character is a princess from the Polynesian island of Motunui. Her people are content on their island and hate venturing out into open waters, a mandate that Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) decides to break when a blight strikes her village. The bulk of "Moana" follows the princess after she sets sail and befriends Maui (Dwayne Johnson), an impish demigod with a connection to the blight. "Moana" was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Animated Feature and Best Song.
A "Moana" TV series was in the works at Disney, although those plans were surprisingly altered in February 2024 when CEO Bob Iger announced that the series was being reworked into a movie sequel instead. The release date was given as November, only nine months from the announcement. In terms of Disney marketing, that was pretty short notice.

Shortly after denying Nelson Peltz a seat on the Disney board, the House of Mouse is sharing first looks at two of their upcoming films, Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King. The Hollywood Handle was the first to share the Mufasa image, which Disney debuted as part of the studio’s 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. The picture for Mufasa: The Lion King depicts a young Mufasa standing at the edge of a cliff while staring out at a desaturated Pride Land. The Barry Jenkins-directed sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 live-action hybrid focuses on Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, and is determined for his cub to follow in his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.

Exclusive: Auli’i Cravalho is coming back to reprise the voice of Moana in Moana 2.
We last heard that she was in talks, however it’s clear that she was bound to reteam with Dwayne Johnson, who clearly is coming back as demigod Maui.
In a CNBC interview ahead of Disney’s last earnings call, CEO Bob Iger sprung the news that Moana 2 was opening of November 27, during the Thanksgiving stretch. Disney essentially was over the moon with a Moana Disney+ series that it turned into a big-screen movie.
The sequel is directed by Dave Derrick Jr., with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.
Cravalho told fans last May on social that she wasn’t planning to reprise the role of Moana in the live-action version of the movie.

“Moana” voice actor Auli’i Cravalho attended her first SAG Awards this year and spoke to Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv about the hit Disney animated movie becoming a full blown franchise. The studio surprised fans earlier this month by announcing the “Moana” television series it had been developing was now a movie sequel set for a theatrical release this November.
“It feels like the ‘Moana’ universe is expanding and I love that,” Cravalho told Variety’s Angelique Jackson. “I love that Moana is a hero to all. It changed what it meant to be a Disney princess. You can be strong and brave and stand up against a demigod. It feels really good that more and more generations are going to be able to relate to this character.”

Seemingly out of nowhere, Disney not only announces Moana 2, but reveals that the film is arriving this November. More here.
How’s this for a surprise announcement. If you go by the rule of thumb that a Walt Disney Animation Studios movie takes three to four years to bring to fruition at the very least, then to learn of major new release with roughly ten months’ notice is quite something. Especially in the modern era of leaks and internet gossip.
Yet at its shareholder meeting overnight, Disney sprung the news that not only is a Moana 2 animated movie coming, but we’ll be seeing it this very year.
It comes off the back of two commercial disappointments for Walt Disney Animation Studios on the bounce: 2022’s underappreciated Strange World and last winter’s 100th birthday celebration movie Wish.
Moana 2 must be very welcome tonic for those who count the money around the place.

Make way! Make way! Yes, after sailing into audiences' hearts back in 2016, Moana will return. And sooner than you think. Even with the planned live-action version still in the works, Disney has opted to turn what had been developed as a series set in the world of the film into an animated sequel — and it'll be out later this year.
In an interview ahead of an investors' call, where Disney took the chance to also send word of Zootopia 2 (likely to once more be called Zootropolis 2 here because of that pesky copyright conflict with a European zoo) landing in 2025 and the imminent arrival of the T-Swift concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (now with five extra songs and the added subtitle Taylor's Version) at its exclusive streaming home of Disney+ on 15 March, company boss Bob Iger confirmed the upgrade for Moana: The Series.

See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls on Disney to bring '90s nostalgia back — specifically nostalgia for quickly-made sequels to their popular movies. The announcement came during an earnings call in which Iger emphasized that the ship was being righted at Disney’s film and TV divisions several months after he acknowledged the company had done too much too fast in order to feed Disney+, leading to some cases of lower quality projects hitting the marketplace.
“I feel great about where we are with the studio,” Iger said when updating investors on Wednesday.
Dave Derrick Jr., who worked on the original film as a story board artist, will direct the new sequel, which is separate from a live-action remake of Moana starring Dwayne Johnson. Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina are writing the music.

The line where the sky meets the sea is calling Moana once again. Disney announced a sequel to “Moana,” which will be released theatrically on Nov. 27.
The company’s CEO Bob Iger revealed the news on CNBC ahead of Disney’s first quarter of fiscal 2024 earnings report. The second “Moana” was originally developed as a TV series but became a feature film because Iger was impressed with the footage.
“’Moana’ remains an incredibly popular franchise,” Iger said in a statement. “We can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when ‘Moana 2’ comes to theaters this November.”
According to Disney, “Moana 2” will take audiences on an “expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

Disney Boss Bob Iger announced today that Moana 2 is coming out as a feature — this November. Iger exclaimed the news in a CNBC interview before the studio’s Q1 earnings on how the studio was turning a Moana TV series into a feature sequel. This despite the fact that a live-action version with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role of Maui from the original 2016 film is also planned for a theatrical release on June 27, 2025.
Note, Disney books the Thanksgiving five-day Wednesday-Sunday stretch with an animated movie annually. It always had a November 27 release date set for a toon feature.
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” said Iger, “and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”

“Moana” will go far once again. On Monday during the Disney shareholder meeting, Dwayne Johnson announced plans for a live-action version of the 2016 animated hit. No screenwriter or director is attached, and Johnson stressed that the concept is in its early days, but the actor will reprise his role as Maui the demigod from the original feature.
Johnson is a producer of the new film with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Original “Moana” star Auli‘i Cravalho is also among the executive producers (although she likely won’t reprise her role as the title character).
“I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of ‘Moana’ to the live-action big screen,” Johnson said in a statement. “This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and...

Another day, another Netflix Ya teen film announced. Clearly the algorithms indicate that this genre does extremely well for the streaming service because they keep greenlighting them hand over fist. What makes this new one slightly more interesting, “All Together Now,” is that it stars Auli’i Cravalho, the star of Disney’s “Moana.” Obviously, Cravalho, an unknown Hawaiian native at the time, played the character in animation, but she also sang many of the now-iconic songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina, and Opetaia Foa’i, and as the Oscars that year proved: her voice is fierce and no fucking joke.

It is undeniable that the country is feeling a lot of feelings right now. No matter which side of the aisle you're embedded on, no matter how you feel about the outcome of the election even weeks later -- or maybe it's felt like no time at all -- there is a palpable tension and an uncertainty in day-to-day life. Amid that darkness, Disney releases Moana.
The movie centers on Moana, the titular princess and future chief of her tribe voiced by 14-year-old newcomer Auli'i Cravalho, who sets sail on the ocean, all sparkly and jewel-toned, with a song in her heart and the hesitant help of the braggadocious demi-god, Maui (Dwayne Johnson), to reverse an ancient curse and save her people.
You could also say it's about a village where the people have conflicting ideas on how to fix the economy and about im- and emigration and making their island great again and, oh my god...

Together, the unlikely duo sails across the open ocean, encountering monsters and much more. Yes, even Dwayne Johnson gets intimated. In Disney's Moana (in theaters Nov. 23), the 6-foot-5 actor and former WWE champ voices Maui: shape shifter, demigod of the wind and sea, hero of men. Like newcomer Auli'i Cravalho, who voices the titular character, Johnson performs his own musical number in the animated film. Singing solo made him nervous, but with Opetaia Foa'i, Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda in charge of the movie's soundtrack, the 44-year-old actor knew he was in good hands. It also helped that Johnson had a captive audience, courtesy of his 11-month-old daughter. "I'm always singing to baby Jasmine, because we're at a point now where she can't shut me up—unlike...

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stars as Maui and Auli'i Cravalho stars as Moana in the title role of Disney's upcoming animated film featuring their first Polynesian princess. Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda is working on the soundtrack, and we finally have a clip of The Rock's musical performance! I'm getting really excited for this one. The trailers so far have been enjoyable, and directors Ron Clements and John Musker also have something special for us - The Rock singing. "We looked at clips of him singing at his WWE events," Musker told USA Today. "He would pull out a little ukulele and do a little singing...Lin had a sense of (Johnson's) vocal range and his register...(and) kept that in mind. And The Rock sings well." Miranda, who's working on the soundtrack with Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina, has already been having quite a bit of fun with Disney tunes and...

With Hamilton fever not relenting any time soon, we're starting to get excited for Lin-Manuel Miranda's next projects, including the resucitated In the Heights movie adaptation and Mary Poppins sequel with Emily Blunt. But we won't have to wait years for his next musical feat: he's partnered with Disney for the music on November's animated Moana.
But he's taking some Hamilton family with him: castmate and Schuyler Sister Phillipa Soo has joined the vocal cast which also includes Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and newcomer Auli'i Cravalho.
The casting doesn't come with details on her character beyond "villager", with much of the South Pacific-set animated film still under wraps, but surely you're thinking what I'm thinking. Could Soo be following the likes of Idina Menzel and Jodi Benson from Broadway leading lady to Disney princess? Besides, aren't Schuyler Sisters already the girl power heroes we always hope new Disney princesses will be?...
