It’s a Pixar tradition that sits right up there alongside the Pizza Planet Truck, A113 and the iconic Luxo Ball – the beloved animated short that comes tethered with each new release.
For Inside Out, we had Lava; Toy Story 3 heralded the arrival of Day and Night; while The Good Dinosaur introduced the world to Sanjay’s Super Team. Now, it is (almost) Finding Dory‘s turn to usher in a new bite-sized yarn.
Set to make a beeline for theaters on June 17, it’s been revealed that Andrew Stanton’s long-anticipated sequel will be accompanied by Piper, the cutesy animation that “tells the story of a hungry sandpiper hatchling who ventures from her nest for the first time to dig for food by the shoreline.”

I'm sure most of you watched the Academy Awards last night, so I wanted to create a place for you to talk to us and your fellow commenters about the winners, losers, snubs, performances, and host. For good reason, the topic of diversity was looming large in the minds of the producers of the broadcast, and I thought host Chris Rock did a great job of ripping Hollywood while at the same time creating a call to action for equal opportunity in the industry (which is all the controversy really boils down to). For addressing a tough, complicated issue that obviously doesn't start and end with the organization of the Oscars, I thought it was handled about as well as it could have been.
As for the winners and losers, I was pleasantly surprised to see Mad Max: Fury Road take home as many awards as it did, considering what...

The winners of the 88th Annual Academy Awards have been announced, the biggest award Best Picture went to 'Spotlight.' 'The Revenant' took home the Best Director Oscar for Alejandro González Iñárritu, making Iñárritu the third director in history to win back-to-back directing and Leonardo DiCaprio finally got his Oscar for Best Actor (and there was much rejoicing).
Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki also won his third Best Cinematography Oscar in a row for 'The Revenant.' 'Mad Max: Fury Road' was the big winner of the night for most awards, sweeping the technical categories to earn six Oscars, including Best Production Design.
It was a great year for Irish talent picking up nominations but only Stutterer, which was directed by Irishman Benjamin Cleary managed to pick up a award in Best Short Film (Live Action). The short can be viewed on the Rte player here.

For once, we have an Oscar race with some actual suspense.
Last year, "Boyhood" and "Birdman" went neck-and-neck for most of awards season, but by the home stretch, the results were easy to predict if you were paying attention. This year, with three strong contenders for Best Picture, guessing who'll go home with trophies on Sunday is that much harder.
Nonetheless, most of the acting categories, as well as a few others, have been pretty much locked down for months. Here, then, are my picks for who'll triumph at the 88th Academy Awards, based on research, many years spent covering the Oscars, and my gut feelings.
1. Best Original Song
Could this be the year that perennial Oscar also-ran Diane Warren finally wins? After all, she's teamed with Lady Gaga, who's been on a roll lately, in creating the tune "Til It Happens To You," from "The Hunting Ground." Warren's...

The Academy Awards are not for everyone, but, for whatever reason, they are for me. Something about Oscar season puts a smile on my face, which I know is not a popular thing to say in the film community. It’s popular to say the awards mean nothing and that the voters are mostly old white men voting on “artsy” films that are aimed only at them and no one else. With all of the controversy surrounding this year’s nominees, that seems the case more than ever. Yet, I will still be eagerly watching this Sunday night to see what wins each award (yes even Best Documentary Short, I love seeing someone no one knows capture Oscar glory).
This year, more than most, is especially exciting. Many of the races, including Best Picture, are still up in the air. While many see the awards as pointless, I see them...

The wonderfully weird, hilariously morbid “World of Tomorrow” crams in more disturbing, sinister science-fiction ideas than a decade’s worth of blockbusters. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Animated shorts tend to be nearly silent films. They’ve got music and sound FX, sure, but often no dialogue: something about this particular mode of cinematic storytelling seems to inspire filmmakers to eschew it. Which makes my pick as this year’s best among the Oscar-nominated animated shorts an anomaly: it’s the only one of this year’s film nominees to feature dialogue. Extensively. Unlike its fellow nominees, the wonderfully weird and hilariously morbid “World of Tomorrow” [IMDb | official site], from American filmmaker Don Hertzfeldt, would not work at all were its dialogue removed. Its animation style is deliciously ticklish, and is inherent to its appeal, but it...

The 2016 Oscar nominations are here, and stars from both film and television took to social media to show their gratitude, and to congratulate friends. It's pretty adorable.
Whether or not you’re satisfied with the Oscar nominations, it’s still a great time to appreciate the amazing body of work that was the year of 2015 in film. While there are some glaring omissions, and a repeat of last year’s#OscarsSoWhite, it’s still a happy day for those who heard their names called by Guillermo del Toro, Ang Lee,John Krasinski, and the President of the Academy, Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
Reactions varied from ecstatic to appalled—Ricky Gervais and John Stamos both tweeted about the lack of diversity in the nominations, though surely they weren’t the only ones to notice.

Nominations for the 88th Academy Awards were announced on Thursday morning, and The Revenant dominated the field, earning nods in 12 different categories, including Best Picture. In recent weeks, Alejandro González Iñárritu's epic saga of frontier revenge has seemed like one of the only sure things in an otherwise unusually unpredictable field, but the sheer number of nominations it received was one of the biggest surprises of a morning that was filled with them.

Pixar’s latest film, The Good Dinosaur, may not be able to boast the stellar reviews and box office success that this summer’s Inside Out had, but the film’s opening short film, Sanjay’s Super Team, has been making big splashes in the best animated short Oscar race.
The Academy announced their short list for contenders in the category in November, with Sanjay being named one of the 10 films that made it through the preliminary rounds. The short, which centers on a young Indian boy who imagines Hindu gods as super heroes, looks poised to be the latest in a long line of Pixar films to win the award. But is Pixar’s current success in the category made possible by a self-fulfilling destiny?

Working within the framework of family movies with budgets that run into the hundreds of millions, Pixar's animators manage to find room for the personal and the intimate. Indeed, mining the past for affecting, human experiences is at the heart of the studio's writing process, as The Good Dinosaur's story supervisor Kelsey Mann explained to us in September.

Sanjay’s Super Team has been shortlisted with nine other titles out of a total sixty films to advance in the voting process for the 88th Academy Awards.
As tradition goes, there is always a short film attached to every Pixar film upon its release, eagerly anticipated by fans, this is the first time an Indian animator’s film will be attached and played with a Pixar film in theaters. Also this is the first time two Pixar movies are releasing in one year (Inside Out and now, The Good Dinosaur). Sanjay Patel has been with Pixar for almost 20 years. The Good Dinosaur has also been shortlisted in the animation category.

Continuing with long-standing tradition, Pixar will release a new short in advance of its newest feature-length film. Earlier this year we met a lonely signing volcano in Lava before Inside Out, and now we’re getting ready to meet Sanjay’s Super Team.
Playing in theatres when The Good Dinosaur opens on November 25th, Sanjay’s Super Team is Pixar’s latest short film featuring a colourful cast of characters.
Directed by Sanjay Patel, the short film is inspired by Patel’s own childhood where he felt conflicted between the Hindu traditions of his family and the modern world, which for a little boy, is represented by his love of superhero cartoons. His attention torn between his beloved cartoon heroes and his daily ritual mediation and prayer with his father, the animated Sanjay daydreams about a world where Hindu gods and superheroes are one.

While it’s worlds away from the emotionally-driven tale of Inside Out in terms of setting, Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur shares a handful of traits with its animation peer in that it is a coming-of-age tale. Similarly to Riley’s journey of dealing with growing pangs and irksome parents, the Peter Sohn-directed picture will orbit around Arlo, a wide-eyed Apatosaurus who is tossed into the deep end – quite literally, going off the most recent trailer – when he becomes separated from his father.
And so, what follows is a defining tale across the primordial land, meeting all kinds of strangers along the way. In fact, today’s all-new teaser finds Arlo striking up an unusual alliance with a trio of T-Rexes. Ditching the carnivores versus herbivores trope, the sharp-toothed squad help our title protagonist along his way, though not before using him as a decoy to gain a quick bite.

With a few exceptions, the animated shorts from Pixar Animation Studios are almost always a treat. The short that played before this summer’s Inside Out, Lava, was oddly loathed by some around the internet, despite being fairly harmless. Pixar’s next short, Sanjay’s Super Team, is attached to The Good Dinosaur, which comes out this fall. See a clip from the […]
