Short subjects willing to tackle tough subjects made the final cut with the Academy this year. That means audiences buying tickets to the “2024 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Animation” program should brace for poetic treatments of uncomfortable topics, ranging from incest to the Holocaust. Since the toon shorts tend to run short (just an hour to get through the noms), ShortsTV’s theatrical roster includes two additional “highly commended” titles, ending on a musical up note with “The Little Mermaid” co-director John Musker’s “I’m Hip.”
Hailing from Iran, Yegane Moghaddam’s “Our Uniform” finds a fitting style for a sartorial commentary: Using clothing as her canvas, the young director recalls how it felt to grow up in a country where girls were required to wear the hijab, or headscarf. She creatively experiments with various techniques, manipulating garments to suggest motion and drawing directly onto different fabrics (as when...

There exist three Oscar categories where it’s possible to watch all nominated films in one shot – that’s shorts, Animated, Live Action and Documentary. Packaged into three feature length films presented by ShortsTV, the Oscar Nominated Short Films open in theaters today for a four-week run on about 650 screens in the U.S. and Canada.
It’s 19-year tradition popular with audiences and theaters. Each film is also “an event. Then you can go argue about who you think should win,” says ShortsTV founder and CEO Carter Pilcher.
Theater owners can screen any or all of the three compilations however and whenever they want from a traditional run to a one-week marathon before the Academy Awards on March 10.
Pilcher says the animated bundle tends to do the best historically, although the 2023 short called My Year Of Dicks nudged out some of the family audiences that love animation, giving Live Action the win.

Oscar Droughts: How Long Will Bradley Cooper and Diane Warren Have to Wait for Their Academy Awards?
“Always a bridesmaid, never the bride” certainly applies to the plight of 19 of this year’s longest-suffering Academy Award nominees. Spanning all 23 categories, these actors, filmmakers and artisans — including actor Annette Bening, filmmaker Wes Anderson and costume designer Jacqueline West — share a peculiar bond. Collectively, they have racked up an impressive 107 Oscar nominations over the years without once stepping onto the Dolby Theatre stage to deliver an acceptance speech. By comparison, living titans Daniel Day-Lewis, Frances McDormand, Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep have together garnered 47 bids and taken home 13 trophies.
The 96th ceremony may not change the narrative for many of these perennial favorites. Bening, on her fifth nod for “Nyad,” and Mark Ruffalo, rocking out with his fourth mention for “Poor Things,” find themselves in tight races, with Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) way ahead of them. Furthermore, Bening and Ruffalo’s...

Ahead of the Academy Awards, we’ve reviewed every short film in each category: Animation, Documentary, and Live Action. Here are the Best Animated Short nominees:
Letter to a Pig | France/Israel | 17 minutes
As Haim (Alexander Peleg) tells his tale of surviving the Holocaust as a boy hiding in a pigsty from Nazis, he mentions how one of the animals looked him in the eye as though it knew his plight. The pig oinked and moved to stand between Haim and his pursuer, altering the latter’s perception and ultimately helping to turn him away. Beyond just the idea this creature saved his life, though, Haim also acknowledges the conditioned feelings within his heart for his unlikely savior. He had been taught pigs were unclean. Vicious. Lesser beings fit for slaughter. He was taught they deserved his hate.
It’s a profound realization about mankind’s propensity for bloodlust and superiority.

Memories can be as fickle as they can be honest. They can shift and alter themselves as we begin to fixate on certain emotional responses garnered from specific impactful encounters. This malleable nature is at the heart of Oscar nominated animated short Letter to a Pig from Dn alum director Tal Kantor. The story of a young schoolgirl who finds herself transported into an internal world when a Holocaust survivor visiting her school tells the story of his trauma. Kantor visualises this psychological journey with a distinct brushstroked style and monochrome palette that shifts and folds, evoking the same fading and malleable form that memories can take. During the run up to this year’s Academy Awards Dn joined Kantor once again for a conversation about the making of Letter to a Pig, the thought processes that went into its haunting visual aesthetic, and the reasons she believes it’s...

The State of the Race
The animated short Oscar nominees are all acclaimed indies that explore such heady themes as the Holocaust, war, gender restrictions, incest, and mortality. They hail from the U.S., France, Israel, and Iran and embrace CG, 2D, stop-motion, and mixed media.
The field is led by the timely “War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko”, about a chess game played across enemy lines of an alternative World War I, with the help of a heroic carrier pigeon. It was specifically inspired by John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s popular protest song,...

"I can't forget how you accepted me so naturally... I felt that, more than any person, it was You who actually saw me." This highly acclaimed animated short film is included on the shortlist for the Oscars this year. It originally premiered in 2022, but made the cut for 2023 and will likely end up nominated later this month. Letter to a Pig is an animated short film created by Israeli artist / filmmaker Tal Kantor. After playing on the festival circuit for years, Short of the Week has premiered the full 16 minute short online to watch. A Holocaust survivor reads a letter he wrote to the pig who saved his life while on the run in WWII. A young schoolgirl hears his testimony in her class and sinks into an inner dark journey, where she confronts questions of identity as the boundary between animalism and the extremes of human nature blurs. It's...

When director Tal Kantor was a child, an old man came to her school to talk about his memories of the Holocaust and a letter he had written to a pig who saved his life. That night, Kantor had a dream so vivid that it stayed with her for 17 years. Eventually she had to get it out of her system, if only so that she might have a better hope of understanding its symbology, and so she created this short film, now shortlisted for an Oscar.
There’s an understanding amongst human rights workers that if people have not experienced a particular kind of abuse themselves, they will empathise more strongly if they are shown only a moderate amount of it. Showing them the worst means they’re less likely to believe it and even when they do, they can’t relate to it. This makes talking about the Holocaust more and more.
