Next month’s Criterion Channel selection is here, and as 2021 winds down further cements their status as our single greatest streaming service. Off the top I took note of their eight-film Jia Zhangke retro as well as the streaming premieres of Center Stage and Malni. And, yes, Margaret has been on HBO Max for a while, but we can hope Criterion Channel’s addition—as part of the 63(!)-film “New York Stories”—opens doors to a more deserving home-video treatment.
Aki Kaurismäki’s Finland Trilogy, Bruno Dumont’s Joan of Arc duology, and Criterion’s editions of Irma Vep and Flowers of Shanghai also mark major inclusions—just a few years ago the thought of Hou’s masterpiece streaming in HD was absurd.
I could implore you not to sleep on The Hottest August and Point Blank and Variety and In the Cut or, look, so many Ernst Lubitsch movies,...

The documentary shorts on this year’s Oscar shortlist include one Oscar winning director (Ross Kaufmann of “What Will Sophia Loren Do?”) and the animated shorts include films made by Pixar and DreamWorks Animation. But the real heavy hitters are congregating in the Best Live Action Short category, which is an impressive collection of films with some unexpected star power.
The 10 films on that category’s shortlist include one directed by Pedro Almodóvar and starring Tilda Swinton; another produced by three-time Oscar nominee Lawrence Bender and directed by two-time Emmy winner and “Daily Show” writer Travon Free; and another starring Oscar Isaac, who sports what ought to be an award-winning mustache.
The 10 shortlisted films, which were selected from a qualifying list of 174 shorts, will be narrowed down to five nominees by members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch, with an assist from any members of the Directors Branch...

“I learn so much from kids and they are so pure and it’s an interesting way to get the point across,” muses burgeoning filmmaker Anthony Nti, whose 20-minute “Da Yie” is the yet another film about children in peril that has been shortlisted at the Oscars in recent years for Best Live Action Short. “Maybe it’s more appealing,” says Nti about having young protagonists, in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above).
“Da Yie” takes place over one day in Ghana, in which two children are lured by a stranger with sinister intentions. He laughs, “I never started the film thinking: This is the formula for the Oscars.” Nti explains, “That wasn’t the criteria for me to make the film. I’ve always worked with kids and I was telling a personal story about my childhood.”

Hello everybody, what’s up? You’re listening to I Was Just Wondering With Tom Salmon! The podcast that dives into music, film and games and everything else in between.
My guests on this week’s episode are director Anthony Nti and writer Chingiz Karibekov, the creative team behind the award winning short film Da Yie (2019), which tells the story of Matilda and Prince’s life-changing road trip from Ghana’s vibrant coast to its inner city streets plagued by crime and gangsters.
We jumped into Anthony and Chingiz experience of how they first met studying film at the Royal Institute of Theatre, Cinema and Sound in Brussels, how Boaz Yakin’s film Fresh (1994) influenced their shared creative vision and what’s it like being European based filmmakers shooting a short film in Ghana.
You can checkout Da Yie on Vimeo On Demand right now at vimeo.com/ondemand/dayie...

There will be no Telluride Film Festival this Labor Day in Colorado, but the programmers have unveiled what this year’s selections would have been. Much like the Cannes Film Festival’s 2020 lineup, this year’s Telluride films can at least carry the imprimatur of the festival as we head into the fall circuit. The 47th edition of the Telluride Film Festival was scheduled for September 3-7. See the full lineup, as revealed on Monday, below.
The idea in presenting the Telluride selections is to recommend the best in film this year in hopes that audiences will seek out these movies at other fall festivals (or what remains of them) down the line. With the 2021 Academy Awards pushed way out to April 25, there’s at once less pressure on these films to perform for awards but also a crush of movies backlogged since quarantine hit, making for a competitive season.

The European co-production took away top honours at the latest edition of the biggest short-film festival in the world. At this year’s edition of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, the Belgian-Ghanaian co-production Da Yie [Good Night] has won the International Grand Prix. Anthony Nti’s film follows the fortunes of two young Ghanaian children who become enthralled by a foreigner who treats them to luxuries that are usually far out of their reach. But he has an ulterior motive – will he go through with his plan, or will these two youngsters convince him to change his mind? With a social-realist aesthetic, all handheld camera and nervous energy, and some fine performances from a young cast, the film should go on to greater visibility after its Clermont win, having previously screened at Belgian festivals such as Leuven and Gent. The Clermont-Ferrand candidate for the European Film Awards was the Portuguese-French.
Alpine festival running Dec 14-21 reveals details of all industry events.
Jonas Alexander Arnby, Ágnes Kocsis and Poland’s Agnieszka Smoczyńska will be among the directors presenting new projects at Les Arc Film Festival’s Co-production Village, running Dec 15 to 17.
Hungarian filmmaker Kocsis will attend with romantic drama Iron Song, about the real-life love story between Latvian composer Imants Kalniņš and Us writer Kelly Cherry in the 1960s.
Polish director Agnieszka Smoczyńska will present her first English-language project Silent Twins, about siblings who communicate using a private language of their own creation after spending 14 years in Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital.
