Emile Mosseri is slated to score the new Amazon original series “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” created by Donald Glover, Hiro Murai and Francesca Sloane. The new show — which is based on Doug Liman’s 2005 film of the same title (scored by John Powell) — will star Glover himself, opposite Maya Erskine, Parker Posey and Wagner Moura.
Mosseri served as a composer of films such as “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” “Homecoming,” “When You Finish Saving the World,” and “Minari,” which was nominated for best original score at the Academy Awards in 2021. He was also nominated for a Grammy in the best arrangement, instrumental or a cappella category for the song “Infinite Love” from Miranda July’s “Kajillionaire.”
He’s previously worked alongside artists and composers Angel Olsen, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Dave Longstreth, Julianna Barwick and Terence Nance, among others.

The biography and the filmmaking career path of the American auteur Lee Isaac Chung is a bit peculiar. Born to first-generation Korean immigrant parents, he grew up in rural Arkansas, studied ecology at Yale and planned to go to a medical school before giving it up for his filmmaking dream. After a number of shorts realized during his studies at the University of Utah, his shot his first feature “Munyurangabo” (2007) in Rwanda and in Kinyarwanda language (as the first ever narrative feature film). It premiered at Cannes to a great critical reception, signalling a significant talent on the rise. His next two features, “Lucky Life” (2010) and “Abigail Harm” (2012) were more to the typical American indie side, while he went back to Rwanda to co-direct a documentary called “I Have Seen My Last Born” (2015).

Jeff Tweedy has shared a new version of Woody Guthrie’s classic labor song, “Union Maid,” which appears as a bonus track on the soundtrack for Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut When You Finish Saving the World.
Tweedy delivers a zippy, brisk rendition of the early-Forties anthem, which is sung from the perspective of a proud, take-no-bullshit union woman. “This union maid was wise to the tricks of the company spies,” Tweedy sings over his breezy acoustic guitar, “She’d never be fooled by a company stool/She’d always organize the guys.

Jesse Eisenberg is exactly how you might expect. He’s anxious, speaking quickly with his hands, a slight tremble in his voice from a clear nervousness. In fact, he’s similar to many of the characters he has played over the last 15 years. Eisenberg has repeatedly stated his difficulty in the public eye, his aversion to being famous, which becomes more obvious within minutes of sitting across from him.
His directorial debut, When You Finish Saving the World, portrays an isolated family, a theme he continues writing about through short stories, New Yorker articles, and screenplays. Comprised of Evelyn Katz (Julianne Moore), Ziggy Katz (Finn Wolfhard), and Roger Katz, each member of the family lives within her/her respective bubble. Evelyn runs a successful domestic abuse shelter, listening to classical music in her extremely small car to and from the workplace. Ziggy has garnered a following on a live-streaming platform,...

Introducing Ziggy Katz: the viral sensation who performs indie rock and folk music on livestreams from his bedroom in the Midwest, which is actually just the film set where Finn Wolfhard portrays him. Wolfhard, or rather Ziggy, star of the upcoming A24 film When You Finish Saving the World, has shared the first real song from the fake singer, “Pieces of Gold.”
The original song is more atmospheric than the releases of Ziggy’s supposed major influences — Elvis, John Lennon, and Bob Dylan, according to the faux artist’s Spotify bio.

"Ziggy, are you happy?" A24 has revealed an official trailer for Jesse Eisenberg's feature directorial debut called When You Finish Saving The World, which first premiered 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It is being released by A24 in theaters in exactly a year from its initial premiere, in January 2023 starting out in art house cinemas. Evelyn and her oblivious son Ziggy seek out replacements for each other as Evelyn desperately tries to parent an unassuming teenager at her shelter, while Ziggy fumbles through his pursuit of a brilliant young woman at school. Starring Academy-Award winner Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard, with Billy Bryk, Alisha Boe, Jack Justice, Jay O. Sanders, Eleonore Hendricks, and Catherine Haun. Featuring original music by Emile Mosseri, Finn Wolfhard, and Jesse Eisenberg. I first saw this at Sundance (read our review) and it's good, but not a knock out. There is some smart commentary...

Surprises dotted the visual media categories at Tuesday morning’s Grammy Awards nomination announcements, with television dominating the original-score category but new movies ruling the compilation-soundtrack list.
As expected, H.E.R. was nominated for best song written for visual media for “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah,” which won the Oscar earlier this year. Her fellow Oscar nominee, Leslie Odom Jr.’s “Speak Now” from “One Night in Miami,” was also nominated.
H.E.R. and her fellow “Fight for You” songwriters Dernst Emile II (aka D’Mile) and Tiara Thomas also notched a song of the year nomination, and H.E.R. earned a nod in the traditional R&b performance category for that song.
Three of the six song nominees were from television projects: the Emmy-winning “Agatha All Along” from “WandaVision,” “All Eyes on Me” from “Inside Bo Burnham” and “All I Know So Far” from the Pink documentary by that title.

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.
Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.
This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.
Here is the full list of nominations with Winners in bold.

Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won this year’s Oscar for Best Original Score for their work on Disney-Pixar’s “Soul.” (See the winners list.) The trio’s competition included Terence Blanchard for “Da 5 Bloods,” Emile Mosseri for “Minari,” James Newton Howard for “News of the World” and Reznor and Ross themselves for “Mank.” “Soul” is only the second film to win Best Original Score without a corresponding Best Picture nomination since the latter category’s expansion in 2009, joining “The Hateful Eight” (2015).

“Soul” also becomes the 10th Disney film to win here, and the first since Michael Giacchino‘s victory for “Up” (2009). Disney first picked up a win in Best Original Score for “Pinocchio” (1940), followed by “Dumbo” the following year.

The trio of composers behind Disney-Pixar’s “Soul” won the Oscar for best original score Sunday night. It was the first Academy Award for jazz artist Jon Batiste and the second for Nine Inch Nail rock writers-turned-film composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Finch.
Batiste becomes only the second Black composer to clinch the original score award in the 86-year history of the category.
“God gave us 12 notes,” Batiste said at the podium. “It’s the same 12 notes Duke Ellington had, Bach had, Nina Simone…. Every gift is special. Every contribution with music that comes from the divine, into the instruments, into the film, into the minds and hearts and souls of every person who hears it. The stories that happen when you listen to it, the stories you share, the moments you create, the memories you make, man, it’s just so incredibly special.”

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won their second Oscar on Sunday night, a little over a decade after their first win for “The Social Network.” Along with Jon Batiste, the longtime musical partners took home statues for Best Original Score for their collective work on the Pixar film “Soul.”
“Soul” is one of the only films with a music-related protagonist to win this category since 1999’s “The Red Violin,” joining (arguably) only “La La Land” over that span. It’s fitting, then, that the team behind it has the impressive musical pedigree to match. Batiste has been the bandleader for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” since its premiere in 2015. Over that time, he’s also released multiple studio and live albums, including last month’s “We Are.” He was also nominated in a pair of categories at last month’s Grammy Awards.

Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony was historic in more ways than one, making the 441-day wait for the 93rd Academy Awards well worth it.
“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations — an Oscar record for diversity in those categories — but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.
“Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao made history as well, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The film also won best picture.

This year’s roster of Best Original Song and Score nominees includes a heavy dose of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (double nominees in the score category), more of the same from 12-time nominee Diane Warren, and the support of an entire Icelandic town. But while not every expected contender wound up cited in the Academy Awards’ two music categories (better luck next year to Taylor Swift and former winner Alexandre Desplat), the 2021 Oscar nominees for Best Original Song and Best Score include some very worthy musica

Good news: There are 41 feature films nominated for Oscars this year. Better news: The 93rd Academy Awards are Sunday, so there’s still time to watch some of the movies before the biggest night in Hollywood.
“Mank” leads all films with 10 nominations, with “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” in a six-way tie for second with six nominations a piece. It’s the most diverse slate of nominees ever, with two women in the directing category for the first time ever (“Nomadland” director Chloe Zhao and “Promising Young Woman” filmmaker Emerald Fennell), and nine of the 20 acting nominations went to people of color.
It’s also an extraordinarily streaming-heavy field; Netflix snagged an astonishing 35 nominations, its highest mark ever and the most for an individual studio in more than a decade.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

The films in the running for the 2021 Best Original Score Oscar are “Da 5 Bloods,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “News of the World,” and “Soul.” Our current odds indicate that “Soul” (31/10) will take the prize, followed in order by “Mank,” “Minari,” “News of the World,” and “Da 5 Bloods.”
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are nominated together for their work in both “Mank” and “Soul.” “Mank” is the second David Fincher film for which they have been recognized after “The Social Network,” which won them an Oscar a decade ago. He may have only been composing film scores since 2016, but Emile Mosseri has quickly become one of the most exciting composers in today's Hollywood. At least, he's got a prime spot on my list of ones-to-watch. Two years ago, he made a big splash with the hauntingly beautiful compositions for The Last Black Man in San Francisco. Joe Talbot's delicate tone poem about a city and its people earned much critical acclaim and even a couple of awards for the young composer. While “Soul” has won most of the Best Original Score precursor awards for its mix of jazz and new age, the Oscar race isn’t necessarily all sewn up. It is an eclectic group of contenders in this category, with double nominees, a first-timer and two veteran composers. The five films to earn a score nomination this year are “Da 5 Bloods,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “News of the World” and “Soul.” All are featured heavily in their respective films, and they each have a plausible path to victory considering the quality of the scores, the narratives of the individual composers and the overall respect for the films themselves.
So who will win this year’s Oscar for Best Original Score? Let’s examine each of the nominees.

Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” garnered six Oscar nominations, five of which were in top categories like acting, writing, directing and Best Picture. The film’s sole technical nod went to 35-year-old composer Emile Mosseri for his beautifully offbeat musical score (some of it featuring his own humming voice), which cushions the story’s emotional arc.
Mosseri, who makes his home in Glendale, California, and lived for eight years in Bushwick, Brooklyn, has made a big impression on the indie-film music scene in just the last couple years with scores for art-house hits like “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” and “Kajillionaire.” He is also a bassist in the rock band The Dig.
During a conversation with TheWrap, Mosseri spoke about the tricky line between sweet and saccharine in music, and of the particular Tim Burton film (with a score by Danny Elfman) that first sparked his obsession with movie melodies.

There’s a two-in-five chance that an African American will walk away with the Academy Award for original score on April 25, and if so, it will be only the second time a Black composer has won in that category.
That’s because two films with Black composers were nominated this year: Terence Blanchard for “Da 5 Bloods,” and Jon Batiste, one of three composers nominated for “Soul” (along with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). That in itself is a first: before this year, only six films featuring Black composers were even nominated.
Herbie Hancock is the only African-American composer to win in the original score category, for 1986’s “Round Midnight.” Quincy Jones has seven Oscar nominations (six of them for music) without a win, although he was honored with the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1995.
No one will argue that the Oscar odds have been against African Americans from the beginning,...

Composer Emile Mosseri might be humble. And judging from our podcast conversation, he might have low expectations. But, he should get ready because after his breakthrough Oscar-nominated score for “Minari,” it would be shocking if some of the world’s major filmmakers were not rushing to collaborate with him.

When Oscar nominations were announced March 15, mainstream-media headlines focused on the usual topics: best picture, the four acting categories and Hollywood’s current obsession, inclusion. These are all worth talking about, but the Msm virtually ignores one key element every year: The artisans.
Those individuals are key to a movie’s success, as everyone in the industry knows. The artisans are also important to Oscar: They constitute one-third of the 9,000-plus voters in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which means their votes are crucial.
These nine categories also beef up a contender’s bragging rights. Netflix’s “Mank” was the nom leader with 10 — and six of those were in below-the-line races. Of the other seven best picture contenders, each had at least one Btl nomination.
Aside from “Mank’s” team, almost all of the artisans who worked on the year’s best-pic roster are first-time Oscar contenders, ranging...

Leading the field of top original scores of the year are dual nominees Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, who won the Oscar for “The Social Network” a decade ago. The duo landed both Globe and Cca awards for their New Age score for Pete Docter’s Pixar feature “Soul” — with help from jazz musician Jon Batiste — as well as a second Oscar nod for the very different Bernard Herrmann-tinged orchestral score for David Fincher’s “Mank” (Netflix).
They’re competing against James Newton Howard’s soaring, elegiac music for Paul Greengrass’s post-Civil War western “News of the World,” starring Tom Hanks. Howard has been nominated eight times, including for “Defiance” and “Michael Clayton.” He’s overdue.
Terence Blanchard follows up his first nomination for Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” with his second, for Lee ’s 60s-flashback to Vietnam, “Da 5 Bloods” (Netflix), the film’s only nomination. Also in the...

Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who earned two 2021 Oscar nominations for Best Original Score, reacted to the news on Monday, with Reznor describing the nods to Billboard as “surreal and humbling and incredibly flattering.”
The duo, who secured an Academy Award in 2011 for David Fincher’s The Social Network, are now nominated for the Fincher drama Mank and computer-animated Pixar film Soul (with Late Show bandleader Jon Batiste). Describing the news, Reznor said, “[It’s] another thing that kind of doesn’t seem real in a year when everything starts to blur together.

This morning, in a rare feat, composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross pulled a pair of Original Score nominations for Soul and Mank.
Throughout film history, we’ve often seen a single composer earn two Academy Award nominations for different films, in the same year. The most recent to do so was Alexandre Desplat, who was nominated in 2014 for both The Imitation Game and The Grand Budapest Hotel. (Desplat won for the latter film).
But composer duos are another thing altogether.
While Edward Plumb and Paul Smith earned two Score noms way back in 1943, for the films Saludos Amigos and Victory Through Air Power, those came in the separate categories of Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture, and Scoring of a Musical Picture.
In the modern era, where Score is condensed into one category, only Reznor and Ross have been nominated as a duo for two separate films,...

The nominations for the 2021 Oscars have arrived, with A24’s “Minari” scoring a wonderful, wonderful six bids: picture (Christina Oh), director (Lee Isaac Chung), actor (Steven Yeun), supporting actress (Youn Yuh-Jung), original screenplay (Chung) and score (Emile Mosseri). However, its snub for film editing is raising eyebrows among awards prognosticators. That’s typically one of the key noms a movie needs in order to win Best Picture, with only “Birdman” (2014) overcoming that hurdle in the past 40 years. Despite that asterisk, “Minari” still has a strong path to win Best Picture, and it’s all thanks to the guilds.

Nearly all of Oscar’s 2020 original-song nominees are newcomers, while only two of this morning’s original-score nominees are new to the competition.
Veteran songwriter Diane Warren earned her 12th nomination for “Io Sì (Seen)” from “The Life Ahead,” shared with singer and co-lyricist Laura Pausini. She must be seen as the front-runner, as she has never won in over three decades of nominations; and she won the Golden Globe on Feb. 28.
Leslie Odom Jr., also nominated this morning for playing singer Sam Cooke in “One Night in Miami,” earned a second nomination as the writer of that film’s closing song, “Speak Now,” shared with Sam Ashworth.
All of the other song nominees are first-timers at the Academy Awards. British composer Daniel Pemberton received a nod for “Hear My Voice” for the film he scored, “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” shared with vocalist and co-writer Celeste.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its nominations Monday morning for the 93rd Oscars, through Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas. AMPAS’s David Rubin started the pandemic-delayed Oscars by validating Deadline’s scoop that most of the event will be held in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, with some of the event being held in the Dolby Theatre, its usual locale.
The nominations for the Oscars, which will hold its ceremony April 25 live on ABC, had its share of surprises, and the most noticeable thing is the diversity that is reflected in the Academy’s efforts over several years to broaden the perspective of its voting members. Coming off the recent scandalous showing by the scandal-mocked HFPA for not even having a single voting Black member, it seems a step in the right direction.
