CNN anchor Kate Bolduan got an interesting new job in 2022 when she was named the anchor of “5 Things,” a quick-hit open-the-day summary of top stories that was made available for streaming audiences. Two years later, she appears poised to get it again.
Bolduan will lead a test run of “5 Things” starting Monday on CNN Max, the live-streamed news service available on Max, the streaming venue backed by corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery. The program’s reappearance after a long absence marks the latest chapter in a concept that many at the news outlet seem to love, but just can’t figure out how to transform into a sustainable video franchise. CNN already operates a podcast and newsletter tied to the format.
CNN has reason to try “5 Things” anew. It was one of the more popular offerings made available on CNN+, an ambitious but short-lived subscription-based streaming service launched in 2022 in...

Kasie Hunt left a fast-track career at NBC News in 2021 to dip her toes into digital waters at CNN. Two years later, she’s just starting to find out whether she might sink or swim.
On Wednesday, Hunt will launch “State of the Race,” a new hour-long weekday show for CNN’s international service focused on U.S. politics and the 2024 election. “It won’t be any less sophisticated than what my most specific viewers in Washington are hearing, the ones who are my sources,” she says. Expect to hear from people who know how political campaigns work and why candidates make the decisions they do. Could the program show up for U.S. audiences on CNN Max, the new live-streaming service set to debut the same day? .There is a strong expectation within CNN that the new product will feature several hours of Cnni. “That question is above my pay grade,...

The final Nielsen numbers for the just-completed 2018-2019 network news season are in, and ABC’s World News Tonight with David Muir again finished first in total viewers and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt beat its rivals in key demographics.
But viewership was flat or down across the board, even as the networks seized on the numbers for bragging rights.
ABC News touted that it won the season in total viewers for a third year in a row, and that it increased its margin over NBC Nightly News by 37%. NBC News placed ads in the New York Times promoting the fact that Nightly News, Today and Meet the Press won the demos for a fourth year in a row — and it also is touting it is No. 1 in the key news demo of adults 25-54 for a 12th straight season, and No. 1 in adults 18-49 for the 23rd season in a row.

Sam Singal, the NBC News producer who has supervised its flagship “NBC Nightly News” since September of 2015, is stepping down from the role to consider other options at the NBCUniversal unit, according to a person familiar with the matter. Jennifer Suozzo, a longtime producer at the news unit, will fill the role on an interim basis.
“I am incredibly grateful for my time here and so incredibly proud of all the terrific journalism that everyone in this room and on the phone does every single day,” Singal told staffers Friday, according to this person. “It is smart, it is thorough, and most importantly, it is fair and it’s something that I am very proud of when I leave here every night.” NBC News did not make executives available for comment.
