Recently, “Mai” became the highest grossing film of all time in Vietnam, cementing Tran Thanh's status as the king of the local box office, since the top three entries now belong to him. The success of the movie, however, did not occur only within the country's borders. 3388 Films released the movie in nearly 200 theaters in nine countries throughout North America and Europe – marking the widest same-day theatrical release ever for a Vietnam film across the two continents. “Mai” is now playing in the U.S., Canada, UK (England and Scotland), France, Germany, Norway, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland.
The titular character is a woman in trouble, although not exactly to her own accord. As the story begins, she is just moving to a cheap apartment in a block and her beauty immediately causes problems for her. The other women feel jealous of her, particularly since their husbands cannot hide their awe,...

Lunar New Year is a key box office period in several Asian territories, but nowhere was it more hotly contested this year than in Vietnam, where several local, Japanese and Hollywood movies were slugging it over the week-long holidays (February 9-15).
Tran Thanh’s Mai, a romantic drama that delves into the psychology of its female protagonist, was the clear winner — at the time of writing it was topping the box office with a haul of VND400BN ($16.4M). Produced by Tran Thanh Town and Cj Hk Entertainment, a joint venture between Korea’s Cj Enm and local outfit HKFilm, the film has the potential to break the record set by Tran Thanh’s own The House of No Man, released this time last year, which is Vietnam’s highest ever grossing film with VND476BN ($19.4m).

For the first time in modern Vietnam cinema since the establishment of its box office tracking, six local films topped the Vietnam box office in 2023 and combined to capture more than a third of the total box office receipts. This dominating performance by local films is a stark reversal of 2022, when the top local film only placed sixth in the year's overall ranking behind Hollywood and other foreign films.
As 2023 comes to a close, here's a look at the 6 films (in order of box office performance) and the directors who helmed them:
1. Nhà Bà Nữ (The House of No Man)
Directed by Trấn Thành, starring Uyển Ân, Song Luân, and Trấn Thành.

Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta has made an unusual inroad into Vietnam with reality show “Let’s Feast Vietnam,” which launched on Netflix this week in parts of Asia.
The 10-episode “Let’s Feast Vietnam” (aka “Hành Trình Ky Thú”) is part cooking competition and part-way travelogue. It also borrows something of the ‘reels’ short video feature that makes social media apps so addictive, in that contestants are required to produce video clips along their journey.
The show involves 14 content creators from six countries who embark on a voyage through the Southeast Asian nation, encountering beautiful landscapes, learning culinary arts and being required to take on challenging missions.
Destinations include the historic capital of Hanoi, the natural wonders of Ha Long Bay, buzzy commercial capital Ho Chi Minh City and pearl island Phu Quoc.
The contestants are accompanied by various celebrities and influencers who act as commentators along the way.

Tran Thanh is a popular Vietnamese TV-show host, actor and, since recently, filmmaker who has found a formula that works, at least from a financial point of view, with the success of his debut “Bo Gia”. The recipe was simple: a family-themed comedy-drama with slight romantic overtones was released in the less-busy winter period and earned over 17 million dollars, mostly domestically and in the nearby territories. With his newest film, and his first solo directorial effort, “The House with No Man”, he upgraded the formula by amplifying the romantic angle and timing the release in the time of the Tet holiday (the fact that it is also close to the Valentine’s Day also helps), and it resulted in the income of 18 million dollars so far, before even opening outside Vietnam.

A big-hearted, deeply traditional Vietnamese father juggles the wants, needs and occasional indignities of his dysfunctional extended family in actor and comedian Tran Thanh’s “Dad, I’m Sorry.” This comedy drama currently stands as Vietnam’s highest grossing movie of all-time (beating “Avengers: Endgame”), so it’s no surprise it’s the country’s 2022 Oscar international feature submission. Tran, who co-wrote the script, tries hard to provide a multi-layered picture of domestic Vietnamese life and he’s especially concerned with the cultural shifts that have widened the generation gap between older Vietnamese patriarchs and their digital-native charges. But his film swings from histrionic melodrama to broad comedy with such abandon that his concerns and insights are given little opportunity to sink in.
“Dad, I’m Sorry” is based on Tran’s hugely popular five-episode web series. Here, the actor, comedian and former judge on “Vietnam’s Got Talent” toplines as Ba Sang,...

After debuting at the top of the U.S. specialty box office over Memorial Day weekend, family comedy/drama Dad, I’m Sorry (Bo Gia) has now surpassed the $1M mark, becoming the first Vietnamese-produced title to reach that milestone. Starring, written and co-directed by Tran Thanh, the movie added $116K in its third frame to bring its domestic gross to $1.08M. It has already been a runaway success in Vietnam with over $17M locally.
Dad, I’m Sorry originally debuted in the U.S. in just 19 theaters via 3388 Films, landing a spot in the Top 10 that first weekend and grossing over $400K to claim the record of best opening weekend for a Vietnam film in U.S theaters. How many Vietnamese films have you ever seen? Or even heard of? For a heavily populated country that was controlled during roughly the first half of the 20th century by one of the most cinematically advanced nations, France, it’s surprising that Vietnam has such a thin history where film is concerned. The only Vietnamese director to ever make much of mark internationally is Tran Anh Hung, who in the 1990s gained an art house reputation with such films as The Scent Of Green Papaya and Cyclo.
But now suddenly a new film has opened in the United States (via 3388 Films) that is being promoted as the number one Vietnamese box office champion of all time. On a budget of $1M, Dad, I’m Sorry (Bo Gia) has raked in over $17M in its native country since releasing on March 12. And, after two weekends dominating the U.S. specialty box office,...

We might finally see some light returning to the specialty box office this Memorial Day weekend.
Bố Già (Dad, I’m Sorry) is a comedy-family drama directed by comedian and Vietnam television host Trấn Thành and Vũ Ngọc Đãng. The movie is an adaptation of a hit web drama that was originally released on YouTube, where it garnered more than 90 million views for its five-episode run.
The film follows the story of Sang, an old motorbike taxi driver from a low-class neighborhood in downtown Saigon, as he struggles to make ends meet for his family.
It was planned to hit domestic screens during the Lunar New Year holidays but was postponed by Covid-19 until this weekend.
Estimates have Bố Già earning between $350-380 thousand dollars on 20 screens, give or take. If the Galaxy Studio-distributed film closes out strong this 4-day weekend, the Vietnamese-language comedy-drama will average $15-20K per screen.

The story of how “Rom” managed to screen in Busan is quite interesting. During the last September, after “Rom” was submitted and picked to screen in Biff, the Vietnam Cinema Department had said that the Hoan Khue company, which produced “Rom”, had sent the movie to the festival before it was approved by Vietnam’s censors. It also asked the company to explain why the film had been produced by foreigners without getting the script approved as required by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The company then wrote to the Busan festival organizers and asked that the film be withdrawn. (source: e.vnexpress.net)
However, the movie was eventually screened, since, according to Park Sungho, a Biff 2019 representative, “we did not want to cancel the screening because a lot of fans had bought the tickets and cared for the movie. A film festival has to keep its connections...
