It’s one thing that a film has two characters that fall in love and then only later face the fact that they come from two very different cultures, and it’s a completely different thing when that’s all we see in a movie, from the very beginning till the very end. Christmas as Usual, written and directed by Petter Holmsen, is a simple (bordering on simplistic) dramedy where Thea and Jashan, two people from very different cultural backgrounds, go together on a trip to Norway to meet Thea’s family for Christmas. There are no prizes for guessing what happens next. The Norwegian traditions and culture become a bit of a problem for the Indian-origin Jashan, and the relationship is tested.

In a world where time is marked by relentless technological advancement and rapid cultural shifts, Aachar and Co. takes us on a heartwarming journey back to the simpler times of the 1960s and 1970s in old Bangalore. Directed by Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy, known for her comedic flair, and co-written with her fellow comedian friend Kanan Gill, the film is a lighthearted dramedy that taps into the essence of familial bonds, dreams, and the challenges of breaking societal molds.
Set against the backdrop of a bygone era, Aachar and Co. introduces us to the Aachar family, where Madhusudhan Aachar, a civil engineer with a prestigious government job, presides as the patriarch. His enviable job and position have given him a big, beautiful house, an Ambassador car, domestic workers, and a driver. His wife, Savithri, and their ten children—three sons and seven daughters—collectively represent the era’s quintessential family structure.

There’s certainly no shortage of content across all of your favorite streaming services right now. Netflix and Disney+, especially, have been knocking it out of the park while everyone is stuck inside waiting out the coronavirus. Today marks another content drop for Netflix, too, adding a handful of new titles you might want to check out.
Perhaps the most notable inclusion is the Netflix Original film Extraction, starring Chris Hemsworth. It’s currently sitting at 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, and most critics seem to agree that Hemsworth has finally found his groove in the action flick that sees him play a mercenary attempting to recover the kidnapped son of a crime lord. If you’re in the mood for some explosive action, grab some popcorn and give it a go.
Meanwhile, the kid-friendly Mirror Mirror, starring Julia Roberts and Lily Collins, provides a unique retelling of the story of Snow White.

Yes, the so-called ‘streaming wars’ is now being fought on four fronts, and it’s fair to say that, despite being the fresh-faced newcomer, Disney+ is packing serious firepower. Thanks to its carefully calculated acquisitions over the years, the newly-released streaming service is packed to the rafters with top-tier content, including some excellent original series like The Mandalorian.

You’ve probably heard the news that we’re all gonna be indoors for a little while. There’s no way around that and it sucks to hear. It also makes the usual entertainment stuff each month seem just a little more poignant. While Netflix reveals its new releases each month as a matter of course, the Netflix new releases for April 2020 obviously have some added import.
Thankfully it looks like Netflix is going to ease our social isolation with some easy-watching originals, and a handful of fun original and existing movie options. There isn’t a Stranger Things-like Netflix juggernaut on the schedule for April but there are excellent, bingeable shows like Nailed It! (April 1), The Innocence Files (April 15), and Kenya Barris’s first Netflix offering #blackAF (April 17).
