Avatar: The Last Airbender introduced us to a myriad of bending arts that have diversified from the classical elements of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air. We were introduced to fire-benders such as Azula and Iroh who could generate and redirect lightning. We were introduced to Toph Beifong, the character who discovered Metal Bending. We were also introduced to Combustion Man, the one mercenary of the fire nation hired to hunt down the Avatar.
Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Combustion Man may have had a dark history
Combustion Man has a unique fire-bending ability called Combustionbending. This type of bending allows concentrated chi to be dispensed from the forehead, like a canon, requiring great amounts of control and training. While characters like these are few and far between, one Avatar theory points towards why that is the case.

After traveling to dozens of exotic locations around the world to film New Regency’s and 20th Century Studios’ The Creator, director Gareth Edwards made one last trek that was among his most consequential: to Industrial Light & Magic in Northern California. There, he showed a rough cut of the film to the VFX pros who would be tasked with helping him make his $80 million film look like it cost $200 million, turning human actors into robots — no uncanny valley allowed — and creating futuristic cities and secret labs by augmenting real-life locations with visual effects.
Many of the key moments onscreen were filled with temporary text such as “epic Nomad shot,” a reference to the killer space station at the center of the film concerning a war between humans and artificial intelligence.

Cashmere is to sweaters as “Italian” is to sportscars, or “Wagyu” is to beef: it signifies the ultimate kind of sweater, not just a good one. But, unlike Italian sportscars or a Wagyu beef steak, the best cashmere sweaters are now more varied and more attainable than ever.

Hell, yeah. If we're on the hook for a months-long hiatus while production resumes, Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 8 is exactly the note you want to hit with the midseason finale.
Exciting. Satisfying. Tantalizing.
Showrunners, take note: Sending your cast and crew to Egypt not only creates immense authenticity, it showcases your performers' talent and script strength. Gold star to all y'all!
Having Addison back in the holo-guide role fools us into thinking that we're veering back toward Quantum Leap Season 1's status quo when, in fact, Ben's comment about not being in Kansas anymore is applicable across the board.
Office romances are always awkward when the intimacy ends, but the working relationship continues. Kudos to Ben and Addison for trying to make it work despite the bonkers transformation their life together has undergone.
In the background, Addison finding the [potential] engagement ring is a clever red herring to make the reveal...

Director Tim Miller ("Deadpool") will direct a new live-action feature, based on the 1980's Epic Comics/Marvel 20-issue "Alien Legion" title:
"...'Alien Legion' follows military unit 'Force Nomad', similar to the 'French Foreign Legion'.
"Characters include leader 'Sarigar', whose lower half is serpentine, the fully humanoid 'Torie Montroc' and 'Jugger Grimrod', an alien of the 'Thraxian' race..."

Given how often it happens, the makers of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" and "Star Trek: Picard" appear to abide by a strict mandate that every episode includes a certain number of references to older "Star Trek" shows. Several times, when said shows seem to be falling behind this presumed quota, the showrunners will include a scene in a literal warehouse that is stacked with objects, corpses, or other tchotchkes from throughout "Trek" history. This happened in the "Lower Decks" season 2 episode "Kayshon, His Eyes Open," which featured a menagerie of stuffed creatures and skeletal remains of various "Star Trek" characters, all just hanging out in the background. Fans may remember the enormous desiccated skeleton of Spock 2 as he appeared in the "Star Trek: The Animated Series" episode "The Infinite Vulcan," as well as a Gorn skeleton, the skeleton of Abraham Lincoln (perhaps rescued from the events of "The Savage Curtain"), a taxidermied M-113 creature,...

The spy-action genre of movies is already filled with a ridiculously high number of entries; therefore, for newer releases to even have a chance at staying relevant, an out-of-the-box element is required. The recently released Netflix spy caper Heart Of Stone strictly follows the copybook method of building and resolving intrigue and, as a result, refrains from venturing into riskier territory. Revolving around a secret espionage agency and an overpowered AI tool that could be the key to world domination, the movie treads a very familiar track throughout. With that being said, narrative structure-wise, the easily discernible similarities allow viewers to point out a number of movies and series it has taken inspiration from, a lot of which we think you might enjoy if you liked Heart Of Stone.

Plot: An intelligence operative for a shadowy global peacekeeping agency races to stop a hacker from stealing its most valuable and dangerous weapon.
Review: We have entered the strange period of the SAG-AFTRA strike, where big movies are being released with minimal marketing from the film stars. At any other time, Heart of Stone would get a substantial push on every platform you can imagine. Instead, there are a few interviews filmed several weeks in advance that try to promote the new film. With Wonder Woman herself in the lead, Heart of Stone is designed to be Netflix‘s equivalent of Mission: Impossible, even boasting their shared producers in the trailers. While the film shares more in common with the James Bond franchise, some spectacular chase sequences echo the most recent entries in Tom Cruise’s hit franchise. Heart of Stone is an action-packed movie that would have played well...

If the artists’ strike and warnings of the majority of the intelligentsia don’t manage to shake the corporate giants out of their complacency regarding the aggressive advancement of all-pervasive technology, perhaps the recent swathe of spy flicks will. Netflix’s recent release, Heart of Stone, is probably the third movie in this single month that revolves around an omnipresent tech McGuffin.
In all seriousness, aside from playing on tried (read tired) and tested genre tropes of spy-action movies, and despite following the recent tendencies of throwing around characters with exposition-filled backstories, Heart of Stone proves to be a fun watch due to its effort to anchor an emotional weight through the narrative. The movie was also the Hollywood debut of Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt. However, there is scope for improvements if, as planned by the makers, Heart of Stone spawns a new franchise, in which case having female actors...

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist.
Though the summer of 2023 has long since become the summer of "Barbenheimer," it's also the summer offering the best action film of the year, "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One." The Tom Cruise-starring seventh entry in the "M:i" franchise is as propulsive and thrilling as any other of the series' installments, full of globe-trotting action, jaw-dropping stunts, unexpected twists, and a disturbingly relevant villain in the form of artificial intelligence. It is -- perhaps fittingly -- all but impossible to not think about the "Mission: Impossible" series, especially its most recent title, while watching the new Netflix actioner "Heart of Stone." No one from "Dead Reckoning" shows up here, but there is a distinct bargain-basement feel to "Heart of Stone...

Netflix clearly is determined to play the major-studio game of big, star-driven action franchises. Extraction, its current sequel, another Russo Brothers’ franchise The Gray Man (with the promise of more), Red Notice and many others represent big-screen-type entertainment designed ultimately for people to watch on their couches at home.
This kind of stuff, while skillfully and expensively executed, still works best at Imax rather than your living room, but the streamer is convinced that it will goose subscriptions, so expect more of movies like Heart of Stone, a convoluted spy thriller loaded with James Bond-style action set pieces but with a wonder woman in the name of Gal Gadot in the center of it all. Taking a cue from Charlize Theron’s Netflix franchise The Old Guard, this is a female-driven enterprise where the men, namely Jamie Dornan’s complicated bad guy, take a back seat for the most part.

Netflix tries muscling in on the Mission: Impossible game with the adrenaline-charged spy thriller Heart of Stone, built as a vehicle for Gal Gadot (one of the producers) to swap superheroics for a more earthbound combo of brains, tech savvy, instinct and formidable fight skills. While it’s a few notches up from the Wonder Woman star’s last action romp for the streamer, Red Notice, it feels only marginally less manufactured from the spare parts of other movies. But it gets the job done and is sure to pull solid numbers. It doesn’t hurt that Gadot has appealing chemistry with co-star Jamie Dornan.
The timing seems mildly unfortunate given that the most recent M:i installment, Dead Reckoning, hit theaters only a month ago and also revolves around a risibly named AI mega-brain, “The Entity,” which nefarious forces are angling to control.

Despite being nominated for a staggering nine awards at the 1983 Hong Kong Film Awards, “Nomad” ultimately went home empty-handed. The major nominations included “Best Picture,” “Best Director,” “Best Screenplay,” “Best Cinematography,” and “Best Actor” (Leslie Cheung). “Nomad” is one of the pioneering works that kickstarted the “Hong Kong New Wave,” which began around 1979 and reached its peak in the beginning of the 1980s.
Nomad is screening on Focus Hong Kong
The film follows the tumultuous lives of four Hong Kong youths. Leslie Cheung plays Louis, a shy bourgeois who spends his days listening to recordings of his deceased mother, accompanied by his cousin Kathy (Pat Ha). Their fates intertwine with that of Pong (Kent Tong), whom Kathy ends up falling in love with, and Tomato (Cecilia Yip), Louis' future girlfriend. The film's Chinese title, literally translated as “youth in flames” or “flaming youth,” encapsulates the essence of the work. Patrick Tam...

It’s been a long time since Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise worked together, with their last collaboration being 2005’s War of the Worlds. But now, following their recent reunion, it looks like Spielberg and Cruise could reteam for a science fiction project tentatively titled Nomad. Now, take this with a massive grain of salt. This news comes via Giant Freakin’ Robot’s “trusted sources,” While it may well be true, even if this is possible, don’t expect it to hit screens anytime soon. Cruise’s dance card is pretty full, with him currently shooting Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2. Plus, given his devotion to selling his movies, he’ll take significant time off for global press tours promoting both films. Plus – he’s supposed to be heading to space with Doug Liman and Elon Musk’s Space X movie, so it seems unlikely he’d jump right into another sci-fi tentpole.
