Theater’s biggest stars converged on Monday morning for Variety‘s annual Business of Broadway Breakfast, fortifying themselves with coffee and frittatas on a rare day off, to celebrate a new season of plays, musicals and revivals.
The event, which was presented by City National Bank, included discussions with Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez. They are taking their acclaimed Off-Broadway production of “Merrily We Roll Along” to the Main Stem and hoping to redeem the Stephen Sondheim musical, which flopped when it debuted in 1981. There was also a discussion with Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, who have reunited for the zany “Gutenberg! The Musical!,” more than a decade after “The Book of Mormon” made them household names. And a panel of prominent producers such as Greg Nobile, Kristin Caskey, Patrick Catullo, Leslie Odom Jr. and Fiona Rudin, discussed the challenges of mounting a show in a business with little margin for error.

Here Lies Love, a disco musical featuring a score by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, will come to Broadway this summer.
The musical centers on the life of Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines, who was known for her lavish lifestyle amid civil unrest in the country. To tell the story, the Broadway Theatre will be reconfigured from a traditional proscenium stage into a “dance club environment,” which will allow audience members to stand and move with the actors, according to the production.
The idea for the musical came out of a concept album recorded by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim and released in 2010. The show had its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Public Theater in 2013, followed by a return engagement there from 2014 to 2015, a run at London’s Royal National Theatre in 2014 and a run at Seattle Repertory Theatre in 2017.

National Lampoon finds corporate sponsors for its Downfall Festival in Lemmings: 21st Century.
National Lampoon flayed the peace and love generation when a million Lemmings showed up to off themselves at a free concert. The National Lampoon franchise, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, will send a new wave over the cliff. The iconic comedy brand is rebooting their legendary Off-Broadway Show with Lemmings: 21st Century.
Lemmings was a take-off of Woodstock, promising three days of peace, love and death. John Belushi was the master of ceremonies, bassist, and suicidal cheerleader for the “Woodshuck" festival. The new original musical picks up where the original left off by spoofing the corporate festival culture which has taken over musical gatherings ever since. Lemmings: 21st Century takes on modern Millennial fests like Coachella, Burning Man, Bonnaroo, and Fyre. Their fictional music gathering is called the "Downfall Festival," and it is...

Des McAnuff, the two-time Tony Award winner who directed the original Broadway staging of The Who’s Tommy, will direct a new production of the musical for 2021, producers Hal Luftig and Patrick Catullo announced today.
“Our new production of Tommy will be a reinvention aimed directly at today,” said McAnuff in a statement. “Tommy combines myth and spectacle in a way that truly soars. The key question with any musical is ‘Does the story sing?’ and this one most certainly does.”
McAnuff called the Tommy character – marking his 50th birthday this year – “the anti-hero ground zero. He is the boy who not only rejects adulthood like Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye, but existence itself. He becomes lost in the universe as he stares endlessly and obsessively into the mirror at his own image. This gives our story a powerful resonance today as it seems like the whole...

The Boys in the Band, the first Broadway show to open during the 2018-19 season, has also become the first to recoup its investment, according to a show spokesperson. The $3.5 million production, directed by Joe Mantello, made its money back in 11 weeks, with four weeks left in the engagement.
The recoupment came during Week 7 of the current Broadway season as Broadway overall raked in $37,330,028, a solid 10% gain over the previous week when Fourth of July fireworks and holiday celebrations may have distracted attention from the stage. This week’s box office hit about 86% of potential for the 31 shows.
Paid attendance for Week 7, ending July 15, was at 280,463, 92% of capacity, with the average buyer paying $133.
The figures reflect a considerable jump over last year’s Week 7, which included the July 4 holiday. Last year the week took $29M, with attendance at 256,171.
