Zhang Yimou is undoubtedly one of the foremost names in Mainland Chinese cinema, one of the first names that would come up in a discussion on cinema from the country and one that is synonymous with quality mainstream works that range from period pieces painted on the largest canvas, to small, personal human dramas and everything in between. Named after one of China’s most famous poems––one the film says the nation can still recite by memory today––Zhang Yimou’s Full River Red takes us back to the Southern Song Dynasty, four years after Prime Minister Qin Hui (Lei Jiayin) framed legendary general Yue Fei and had him executed to solidify a newly formed alliance with their enemies, the Jin Dynasty. The poem is attributed to Fei despite discrepancies which some believe push its origins well past his death. As such, Zhang and co-writer Yu Chen use artistic license to concoct an elaborate suspense comedy to confirm it via the fictionalized surviving witnesses of his martyrdom: true patriots who refuse to forget what happened and those they’d risk everything to murder and avenge their hero.

Murder, treachery and political intrigue are the juicy ingredients of Zhang Yimou’s “Full River Red,” an entertaining if overlong mystery-comedy set in the narrow passageways and dark chambers of a Song dynasty military compound in 1146. With a twist-packed plot to match its labyrinthine location, Zhang’s fast-paced film motors along nicely as an engaging “Knives Out”-style whodunnit before stumbling a little in the protracted final act. A Lunar New Year smash hit in China, “Full River Red” will be released on 150 North American screens by specialty distributor Niu Vision Media on March 17.
The biggest commercial success of Zhang’s distinguished 35-year career, “Full River Red” has already grossed a whopping $671 million at home since Jan. 22. The 157-minute blockbuster continues the string of hits he’s delivered since big-budget international co-production misfire “The Great Wall” in 2016. Much less ornately decorated and colorfully photographed than Zhang’s famous wuxia epics...

During the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty, four years after Yue Fei’s death, Prime Minister Qin Hui has led his troops to negotiate with the Jurchen Jin dynasty. On the eve of the meeting, the Jurchen envoy is found dead at the Prime Minister’s residence and the secret letter he carried disappears without a trace.
By chance, a soldier and the deputy commander of the security battalion are caught up in this great conspiracy. They are ordered by Prime Minister Qin Hui to locate the murderer within an hour, but things are not as they seem. In-depth investigations are fraught with danger, and ostensibly hidden behind the case there lurks an even bigger conspiracy.
A game within a game, there are forces at play, people’s minds are unfathomable, life and death are unpredictable, a constant change of events overnight, the undercurrents of...

An early promo trailer from China has debuted for the latest film from acclaimed Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, who has been making at least one new film every year even during the pandemic. Yimou's latest is a historical epic thrilelr titled Full River Red, which seems to be a commentary on Communism and China. The title of his latest film comes from a poem about Yue Fei, "a military general during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), well-known for his patriotism and loyalty to his country, who was framed and executed by Prime Minister Qin Hui, one of the most treacherous officials in China's history." Mao Zedong wrote a poem about him and the film is about Yue Fei fighting the invading Jürchen barbarians. Only a few details are known at this time. Yi Yang Qianxi stars along with Shen Teng, Yue Yunpeng, Zhang Yi, and Lei Jiayin. This has some slick long takes in it,...

Working at such an insane clip he can direct a movie that is coming out in less than a month and it was previously not on our radar, the latest work from Zhang Yimou is arriving soon. U.S. distribution has been hit and miss for his latest work, with Shadow and Cliff Walkers receiving substantial releases, the latter even getting a sequel, while One Second (picked up by Neon and never released) and Snipers aka Sharpshooter have had less luck. His latest film Man Jiang Hong aka Full River Red will now arrive in Chinese theaters next month and the first trailer has arrived, though a U.S. release has yet to be announced.
