Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World is what happens when you toss The Hunger Games, Mortal Kombat, Happy!, and Crank into a blender. While that sounds rad, the slurry of upbeat action and nonsense plot tangles is much more baffling in execution. Mohr’s vision borrows heavily from button-mashy videogames and dystopian graphic novels, blending Cyberpunk futurism with real-world dictatorship commentaries. There’s a message about fascism and rebellion somewhere in Mohr’s madcap martial arts violence, but it’s lost under the piles of enemy corpses. Boy Kills World never knows the movie it wants to be past a killing spree, as the story makes one poor choice after the next, like a genre satire that becomes what it tries to parody.

During the Warner Bros. panel at CinemaCon, Robert Pattinson and director Bong Joon-Ho shared a trailer and new details about their upcoming science-fiction drama Mickey 17.
Robert Pattinson and Bong Joon-ho took the CinemaCon stage, giving the impression they’re proud of the movie they’ve made. Mickey 17 is based on the novel Mickey 7, but they changed it to 17 because that’s the number of times Pattinson’s character dies in the film.
Here’s a plot synopsis for Mickey 17: “Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.” In addition to Pattinson, Mickey 17 has a wealth of other talents on board,...

You remember Road House, right? The 1989 movie where Patrick Swayze is a professional New York City bouncer imported to Missouri to work at the most raucous road house bar in the Show Me State? The kind of film in which the hero does tai chi, reads philosophy and coos Zen koans like “Pain don’t hurt,” and the bad guy utters bon mots like, “I used to fuck guys like you in prison?” (It was a different time.) Direct by the appropriately named Rowdy Harrington, this finely aged slice of...

After Parasite took the world by storm, news emerged that Bong Joon Ho would embark on a Korean animation with the production company 4th Creative Party, who have worked on visual effects for The Host, Snowpiercer, Okja, Oldboy, Stoker, and The Handmaiden. The fully CGI animation was reported to be a deep-sea adventure, featuring creatures and humans, specifically following an invertebrate deep-sea fish who believes he’s suffering from spinal disk herniation. However, with the director jumping to Mickey 17 it’s been radio silence on the project––until now.
Korean news outlets are reporting the film is continuing production and will be the most expensive Korean film ever made, with a budget of 70 billion won, roughly $52.6 million in Usd. Backed and distributed by Cj Enm in Korea, they are reportedly in discussions with Sony Pictures to release the film worldwide.

At the end of Ryan Coogler's 2018 superhero film "Black Panther," the title hero (Chadwick Boseman) gathered on a Wakandan battlefield to face off against the vengeful Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) with M'Baku (Winston Duke) aiding Black Panther and W'Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya) aiding Killmonger. At one point in the battle, W'Kabi blows a trumpet and summons several armored rhinoceroses to knock over enemy combatants in an extended action-packed battle sequence. As one might predict, the bulk of this sequence's fantastical elements were realized using CGI, although there was also a lot of impressive fight choreography by Jordan, Danai Gurira, and many, many accomplished stunt performers. According to a 2018 article in VFX Voice Magazine, a set was built on a ranch in the state of Georgia, and there were a lot of enormous blue screens, used to key in the CGI-created backgrounds of Wakanda.

“The [sci-fi] film has never really been more than an offshoot of its literary precursor, which to date has provided all the ideas, themes and inventiveness. [Sci-fi] cinema has been notoriously prone to cycles of exploitation and neglect, unsatisfactory mergings with horror films, thrillers, environmental and disaster movies.” So wrote J.G. Ballard about George Lucas’s Star Wars in a 1977 piece for Time Out. If Ballard’s view of science-fiction cinema was highly uncharitable and, as demonstrated by some of the imaginative and mind-expanding films below, essentially off-base, he nevertheless touched on a significant point: that literary and cinematic sci-fi are two fundamentally different art forms.

First-time filmmaker Jason Yu, whose horror drama Sleep premieres in Cannes’ Critics’ Week on May 21, honed his craft under the tutelage of South Korea’s very finest. Among the aspiring director’s first industry jobs after graduating from a university in Seoul was an assistant director gig on Bong Joon-ho’s Netflix sci-fi adventure drama Okja, which premiered at Cannes in 2017. Yu credits the experience with teaching him “almost everything” he knows about filmmaking.
“I wasn’t really conscious of what I was observing at the time, because I wasn’t there to learn,” he remembers. “I was just trying to pull my own weight and not ruin the film. But while I was making Sleep, I realized that I was desperately trying to mimic, consciously or unconsciously, everything director Bong did — during preproduction, during production, in the way that I talked to the actors, and even during post-production and promotion.

Plug up that geyser at Yellowstone and lend Cannes the name Old Faithful. How else can one describe a nearly 80-year-old institution that has held true to an overarching vision for as many decades? Find a better sobriquet for the crop of Palme d’Or contenders who will arrive on the French Riviera boasting seven trophies among them, and with a median age, not for nothing, of about 63 years old — not that there’s anything wrong with that.

War of the Worlds. Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Independence Day. Signs. All of these films depict alien invasions as they are happening, but what happens after the fact? And what if, by some small miracle, we come to an agreement with the invaders and find a way to live alongside them? That’s exactly what Cory Finley‘s Landscape With Invisible Hand aims to find out, albeit to mixed results.

Robert Pattinson is heading to space.
Warner Bros. shared a first look at Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming “Mickey 17,” set to be released on March 29, 2024. “Mickey 17” is currently in production and is directed, produced, and scripted by Bong, adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7.”
Pattinson stars as the titular Mickey, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever a mission is too dangerous — even suicidal — the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact.
“Parasite” Oscar winner Bong also enlists Academy Award nominees Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” star Naomi Ackie to round out the sci-fi thriller.
The first look at “Mickey 17” shows Pattinson in an incubator, seemingly in space.

Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 will hit theaters around the globe on March 29, 2024, Warner Bros said Monday. The studio already had the date staked out for an event film. Also opening that weekend is Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and an untitled event film from Universal.
The pic from the Parasite Oscar winner is currently shooting off a script he wrote based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton. The filmmaker is also producing.
Robert Pattinson stars in the title role alongside Oscar nominee Steven Yeun (Minari), Naomi Ackie (I Wanna Dance with Somebody), with Oscar nominee Toni Collette (Hereditary) and Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo (the Avengers films).
The film is produced by Plan B Entertainment, Dooho Choi of Kate Street Picture Company, and Bong under his Offscreen, Inc. banner. The behind-the-camera creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Darius Khondji, Oscar-nominated production designer Fiona Crombie, Oscar-nominated editor Jinmo Yang (Parasite), costume designer Catherine George and visual effects supervisor Dan Glass (The Matrix franchise). The music is by composer Jae-il Jung.
Parasite fired off like a rocket out of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, taking the Palme d’Or and going on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, one of its four trophies there along with Best Director, Screenplay and International Feature. The pic was a revolution for a Korean title on the festival and awards circuit.
Mickey 7 was published in February by St. Martin, a Macmillan imprint. While the film will be inspired by the novel, sources say that given Bong’s past experiences with adaptations, his version might ultimately may be different from the novel’s. The novel’s story follows Mickey7, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.
Here’s a first look of Pattinson’s character in some sci-fi sedation state:...

A few years before "Parasite" shocked the world, Bong Joon-ho ventured into the streaming world with a big-budget adventure film called "Okja." The film follows a young girl named Mija attempting to save her genetically modified pig Okja from the meat industry with the help of a resistance movement. Of course, like much of his work, there is a lot more at play thematically than the exciting logline. At the core, it's a scathing rejection of capitalism coupled with a heart-filled journey that puts meaningful relationships above monetary value. But also, the big pig = very cute and cuddly. Don't believe me? One of the movie's stars agrees wholeheartedly and then some.
Paul Dano, who plays Jay, the leader of the Animal Liberation Front, briefly put away his villain gloves to play a heroic character for a change in "Okja." The promise of collaborating with the great Bong Joon-ho should be...

There's so much to watch on Netflix that it's tough to know where to start. Curious viewers looking for science fiction genre movies might turn towards established classics like "Blade Runner." They might return to the best superhero movies of all time, "Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 2." Perhaps they might even bust out "End of Evangelion," the shocking movie climax of the "Neon Genesis Evangelion" television series, just to feel something.
But there's more available on Netflix than just that. The following films include anti-capitalist fables, groundbreaking animated movies, and a Korean science fiction film that overcame the odds to find success. They represent only a taste of Netflix's original offerings in the genre. Rather than blindly follow the streamer's algorithm, sci-fi fans may be better served by bravely plunging into the catalog in search of the unexpected -- or letting us curate some selections for you. Whether it’s a modern alien invasion or a meet-and-greet, movie goers have been fascinated and lured into theaters by images of UFO’s and their visitors.
E.T. the Extra-terrestrial, which hit theaters 40 years ago on June 11, 1982 , and the earlier Close Encounters of the Third Kind, gave moviegoers nicer versions and visions of first contact with friendly alien visitors – coincidentally both scores were from Oscar-winning composer John Williams – while A Quiet Place, The Thing and Signs were foreboding and cautionary tales of aliens wiping out all of mankind.
Famed physicist Stephen Hawking warned:
“Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they could reach,” Hawking said in 2010 on an episode of “Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking,” a TV show that aired on the Discovery Channel. “If so, it makes sense for them to exploit each new planet for material to build more...

There are few events movie fans look forward to quite like the Barnes & Noble 50 off Criterion Collection sale. It happens twice a year – once in July and again in November – and it’s a perfect opportunity for physical media enthusiasts to acquire some of the very best Blu-rays, loaded with special features and anchored by exemplary video and sound. Sure, the Christmas holiday might be the wonderful time of the year. But Criterion sale time at Barnes & Noble is a close second for those of us still collecting physical media.
This year, there are plenty of amazing titles to choose from and we thought we’d highlight a handful if you’re having trouble narrowing down what to get. These are all titles that have come out since the last sale (in November 2021) and include some that are coming out towards the end of July, when the sale ends.

Speaking on a panel at film industry conference CinemaCon on Wednesday (27 April), Peele explained why he chose to give the feature this notable name.
“I love a rapt audience saying, ‘Nope!’ or, ‘Get out the house!’” he told the crowd.
“I love to encourage that interaction because that’s what’s giving the audience a unique experience. Rollercoasters aren’t fun alone. Being scared isn’t fun alone. You need that energy.” https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/jordan-peele-nope-film-b2067311.html
“I know a lot of people who say, when it’s a scary movie, they say, ‘Nope!’ Especially Black audiences, right?...

"It’s not what you think." Personally, I've seen all I needed to see in the first trailer to get me excited for Jordan Peele's latest, but if you can't hold out until Nope's release on July 22nd, we have a look at the brand new trailer!
"Oscar® winner Jordan Peele disrupted and redefined modern horror with Get Out and then Us. Now, he reimagines the summer movie with a new pop nightmare: the expansive horror epic, Nope.
The film reunites Peele with Oscar® winner Daniel Kaluuya, who is joined by Keke Palmer and Oscar® nominee Steven Yeun as residents in a lonely gulch of inland California who bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.
Nope, which co-stars Michael Wincott and Brandon Perea, is written and directed by Jordan Peele and is produced by Ian Cooper and Jordan Peele for Monkeypaw Productions. The film will be released by Universal Pictures worldwide.
